T

his charming outdoor festival, set against the scenic palm trees and San Jacinto mountains of the Coachella Valley, brings together artists and attendees who look forward to just strolling the artists’ booths or doing some serious collecting. The event showcases 100 artists presenting original work, including paintings in acrylic, oils and watercolors, photography, etchings, sculpture in clay, glass, metal, stone and wood, fine crafts, blown glass, turned wood, semi-precious jewelry, pottery, stained glass and high-quality crafts. Contemporary artisans present unique styles of individually handcrafted functional and decorative pottery, raku, vessels and gourd art. Guests are invited to visit all of the stations to view the works while interacting di-

rectly with the artists. Many pieces are one of a kind, and all works are available for purchase. Presented by West Coast Artists, this cultural display comes along just in time for holiday shopping. Collectors can browse or buy, and creations cover every taste and price point. The experience is all the more appealing knowing that before or after, there are plenty of nearby restaurants, lounges and coffee cafés in the Palm Springs’ Uptown Design District. The Desert Art Festival is held on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission and parking is free. The art festival is located at Frances Stevens Park at 538 North Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. For more information, call 818-8134478 or visit westcoastartists.com.

An Early Dinner for NYC Subway Riders New York City subway riders were treated to an early Thanksgiving dinner this year courtesy of an anonymous benefactor, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. The catered affair took place on a Brooklynbound-train-turned-diner chockfull of traditional dishes, including turkey, mashed potatoes and yams. The table was set in one car

of the train, but volunteers made up heaping plates of festive food for all of the riders lucky enough to be on board the Sunday night before Thanksgiving. The Association of Mature American Citizens [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.
