t’s a seemingly typical day at New York’s only coffee shop, Central Perk, until an unexpected runaway bride with beautiful hair enters the picture and kicks the whole gang out of second gear! The scene may sound familiar. “Friends! The Musical Parody” is a hilarious new musical that lovingly lampoons tv’s “Friends,” the top-rated show that ran for ten seasons from September 22, 1994, to May 6, 2004, and reached the number-one spot in its eighth season. This musical version celebrates the weekly sitcom with wacky misadventures of our favorite group of 20- and 30-something pals as they navigate the pitfalls of work, life and love in 1990’s Manhattan. The series was lauded as being “the first true ensemble show,” loved almost as much for its story lines as for fans’ appreciation of the behind-the-scenes friendships between its breakout stars, who included Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Jennifer Anniston, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Matt “How you doin’” LeBlanc. The intimate 430-seat, stateof-the-art Annenberg Theater is the ideal venue for the production, making everyone feel a part of the action. Cast members Sami Griffith (Rachel), Maggie Mc-
Means (Monica), Madison Fuller (Phoebe), Aaron C. Rutherford (Chandler), Tyler Fromson (Ross) and Domenic Servidio (Joey) capture the original characters with wit, depth and impeccable timing. Show authors and producers Bob and Tobly McSmith also comprise the creative force behind “The Office! A Musical Parody” (now playing Off-Broadway in New York City), “Bayside! The Saved by the Bell Musical” (NYTimes Critics Pick), “Full! House! The Musical” (Starring Perez Hilton), “Katdashians! The Musical,” “Showgirls! The Musical!” and “JonBenet! Murder Mystery Theater.” A review by Theatrelife.org says the “Friends!” show will “make you laugh so hard, your face will hurt and your eyes will tear.” Organizers have called it a “delightfully naughty confection,” which means it’s sure to bring snickers, laughs, guffaws and a couple of nostalgic tears. The stage version plucks the best moments from the show and recreates favorite moments through an uncensored, fast-paced, music-filled romp. “Friends! The Musical Parody” runs July 12-14 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. at the Annenberg Theater, 101 North Museum Drive in Palm Springs. For tickets, call 760-325-4490 or visit psmuseum.org
