I

t’s a seemingly typical day at New York’s only coffee shop, Central Perk, until an unexpected runaway bride with beautiful hair enters the picture and kicks the whole gang out of second gear!

The scene may sound familiar.

“Friends! The Musical Parody” is a hilarious new musical that lovingly lampoons tv’s “Friends,” the top-rated show that ran for ten seasons from September 22, 1994, to May 6, 2004, and reached the number-one spot in its eighth season. This musical version celebrates the weekly sitcom with wacky misadventures of our favorite group of 20- and 30-something pals as they navigate the pitfalls of work, life and love in 1990’s Manhattan.

The series was lauded as being “the first true ensemble show,” loved almost as much for its story lines as for fans’ appreciation of the behind-the-scenes friendships between its breakout stars, who included Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Jennifer Anniston, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Matt “How you doin’” LeBlanc.

According to an AARP study, onethird of seniors are lonely. Another study revealed that loneliness and social isolation can cause increased mortality. Yet another study talks about cognitive decline and depression.

It can be a vicious cycle: If we’re depressed, we don’t want to go out, which makes us more socially isolated, which worsens our depression. We might not feel valued, especially if we’ve recently retired, or we’ve lost a spouse and therefore our previous social group, or we don’t know if we’d be welcome in new places.

There are a number of ways to fight loneliness, but we have to take the steps to break the cycle.

It’s up to us. The biggest (and sometimes hardest) step is to get out of the house. Just go.

Talk to people while you’re out.

You never know what doors might open just saying hello to someone.

Start a new hobby, ideally one that involves others.

Get off the computer. Many of us turn to technology and social media, but it’s really not a cure for loneliness, which makes us more vulnerable to scams.

Join a group, whether at the senior center or library, ideally a group where people have to talk anyway, such as a reading group.

Take a class. Have you tried tai chi?

If you knit or crochet, investigate those “coffee and caps” groups that meet once a week to socialize and make hats and mittens for kids.

Do you dance or sing? Square dancing is energizing, and choirs are uplifting. Volunteering to walk dogs at the humane society accomplishes two things: you interact with others and you train a dog to become a better pet for a potential adopter.

Start by teaching your cat a simple command, like “sit.” Work with him in 5- to 10-minute sessions a couple of times each day.

Place your cat on a perch, like a table, and give him a friendly scratch. When he stands up, call his name while holding a favorite treat at eye level. Raise the treat directly over his head, where he can still see it. Your cat will need to sit down to maintain balance while looking at the treat -- when he sits, you say, “Sit! Good, sit!” Give him the treat. Repeat this training session until your cat sits when you simply hold your empty hand over his head and say “Sit.” Trainers have routinely taught cats to do more complex things -- even using a regular toilet bowl instead of a litter box! Jet-lagged, a friend and I recently bumped into each other at the gym -- she just back from France, and me from two weeks in Morocco. I asked her what her trip highlight was and without skipping a beat, she said, “The best was going to Normandy beaches where my dad landed with Allied forces almost 75 years ago on D-Day,

June 6, 1944. It was so meaningful for me to be where he was and to photograph the landscape.”

Then she added, “There was a non-highlight, too.” Eager to see Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” at the Louvre Museum in Paris, she walked into the spacious room only to observe throngs of people with their backs to the masterpiece taking selfies.

“A casual regard for the painting and its history, it was as though these tourists were simply checking off a bucket list of photo highlights, rather than being in the moment,” she said.

Unlike previous generations, when tourists would sling a camera around their neck and replace expensive film after only 20 photos were taken, today we pull a phone camera from our pockets and make an easy and free click

As I scroll through and edit my travel photos, my friend’s contrasting experiences in Normandy and at the Louvre got me thinking.

What were my intentions when I took photos in the exotic land of Morocco, filled with bright colors, spices, dramatic landscapes and an interesting mix of cultures?

Q: I always enjoyed watching the show “The Chew” on ABC. I found it to be informative and entertaining. I was wondering what the cast has been up to lately? I know Mario Batali had some issues, but what about the others? -- M.P.

Summer Slaw This easy coleslaw -- featuring cabbage, carrots, peppers and apples -- makes a crunch-tastic summer side dish.

Heartland Corn and Beans July, Corn, Iowa ... all wonderful four-letter words, especially when mixed together. But Midwesterners aren’t stingy. We’ll gladly share a few ears of our sweet corn, so you, too, can enjoy this wonderful summer dish.

• 3 cups cut green beans • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion • 1 full cup diced extra-lean ham • 1 cup diced raw potatoes • 2 cups water • 1 1/2 cups whole-kernel corn • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1. In a large skillet, combine green beans, onion, ham, potatoes and water. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

2. Stir in corn and black pepper.

Continue cooking for 10 minutes, uncovered, or until corn is tender and most of the liquid is evaporated, stirring occasionally.

Serves 4 (1 cup each).

Surfer Girl Surfing is a popular worldwide sport today, but when did it start and what is collected? People have been swimming and bodysurfing by riding the waves since ancient times. But it was the Polynesians who started riding the waves on a board long before the Europeans discovered the sport during the first voyage of James Cook to Tahiti in 1769. Their chief was the best at the sport with the best board and beaches. The surfing skill gave him added prestige.

Ancient Hawaiians, Samoans, Tongans and other islanders also used boards to surf partially as an art and religious activity.

Modern-day surfing started with the American tourist who wanted to learn the Hawaiian natives sport in the mid-1860s. Some were successful, and in 1908, a club was formed. In 1885, three Hawaiian princes visited Santa Cruz, California, and surfed. And

• 1/3 cup cider vinegar • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1 tablespoon sugar • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1 small (1 1/2-pound) head green cabbage, thinly sliced, tough ribs discarded • 1/2 small (4-ounce) head red cabbage, thinly sliced, tough ribs discarded • 4 medium carrots, shredded • 1 small red onion, minced • 1 yellow pepper, thinly sliced • 1 large Granny Smith apple 1. In large bowl, with wire whisk, mix vinegar, oil, Dijon, sugar, salt and pepper until blended. Add green and red cabbage, carrots, onion and yellow pepper; toss well.

Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour to blend flavors or up to 6 hours.

2. Just before serving, core apple and cut into matchstick-thin strips.

Add to coleslaw and toss to coat.

Surfboards were the first important collectible. Collectors can now find the ever-changing surfboards, clothing, professional contest prizes (after about 1975), surf music, recordings and sheet music, movies and even toys.

Hubley Manufacturing Company (1894-c.1975) made a painted metal toy with a girl riding a surfboard on waves. It had wheels that let it roll on an eccentric path. The girl’s one-piece yellow bathing suit suggests a date in the late 1950s or ‘60s, early for a surfer toy. It sold for $5,700.

Persistent Underarm Odor Can be Minimized Dear Dr. Roach: I have underarm odor. I wash daily, use deodorant and change my shirts daily. I use mostly cotton shirts and undershirts. I launder my shirts with soap mixed with bicarbonate sodium (baking soda) to eliminate odor. In spite of all this, deodorants seem to work for few hours and then fade away.

Keeping them dry and minimizing bacteria are then the ways to minimize body odor.

Antiperspirant, rather than deodorant, is effective at keeping the axillae dryer. Applying at nighttime after shower or bath may be more effective. Occasional use of a topical antibiotic to the axillae can keep bacteria growth down as well.

Diet can have a role, too. Sulfur-containing foods like garlic, along with onions and many curries, can cause a strong odor.

Shaggy Dog Story Petaluma, CA may be known as the Wrist Wrestling Capital of the World, but now has a relatively new boast, the home of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest.

Freeport Flag Ladies Retiring 9/11 Tradition The Freeport Flag Ladies -- Carmen Footer, Elaine Greene and JoAnn Miller -- haven’t missed a single Tuesday morning in 18 years, standing with U.S. flags on a corner in Freeport, Maine. Rain, snow storms, icy wind, heat and humidity, it didn’t matter. The Ladies were always there, waving at the hundreds of honking cars that passed. They were often joined by others who came to stand and wave flags.

And now they’re retiring from their Tuesday mornings.

It all started when the plane hit the second tower on Sept. 11, 2001. Not knowing what else to do to honor the lives lost, they grabbed a flag and went to a corner on the main street in town, waving the flag. Cars honked in response, and they promised to be there every week for one year

to help with our nation’s healing.

They stayed on to support the service members who were then placed in harm’s way. That was 18 years ago.

They’ve been busy, despite their advancing years. (Elaine Greene, age 74, is the youngest of the three.) They’ve made appearances at Honor flights, candlelight vigils, parades, deployments from National Guard centers, homecomings, flag retirements and much more, always in support of service members, veterans and first responders.

There were all the airport greetings with servicemembers coming and going, with thousands of photos being snapped and loaded on their website (www.freeportflagladies. com). Those last-minute airport photos are most treasured by the families who couldn’t be there.

And then there are the lucky pennies, each placed in a tiny envelope with a card designed by the Flag Ladies and handed out at airports to departing service members.

• On July 17, 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio fails to get a hit against the Cleveland Indians, bringing his historic 56-game hitting streak to an end. DiMaggio also lost the $10,000 promised to him by Heinz ketchup for matching the number “57” featured on its labels.

• On July 21, 1959, Elijah Jerry “Pumpsie” Green makes his Boston Red Sox debut, becoming the first African American ever to play for the Red Sox, the last team in the major leagues to integrate.

• On July 15, 1965, the unmanned spacecraft Mariner 4 passes over Mars at an altitude of 6,000 feet and transmits the first close-up images of the red planet. The 22 pictures revealed a barren wasteland of craters, dismissing 19th-century speculations that an advanced civilization might exist there.

• On July 20, 1972, a two-year study by the U.S. Department of Transportation concludes that 1960-63 Chevrolet Corvairs are at least as safe as comparable models of other cars. In his book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” Ralph Nader had targeted the rear-engined Corvair due to its tendency to roll over.

• On July 18, 1986, new close-up videos of the sunken ocean liner Titanic are released. The wreck was found in 1985 off Newfoundland, 13,000 feet down on the ocean floor. The Titanic sank in 1912.

• On July 16, 1999, John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife and her sister are killed when the single-engine plane he was piloting crashes into the Atlantic Ocean off Massachusetts.
