We can’t turn on the news now without hearing about the new virus that’s sweeping the world. Coronavirus, now called COVID-19, is a serious virus that came out of China. At this point the virus has spread to more than 30 countries and there have been over 2,800 deaths.

Protecting ourselves from COVID-19 is much like how we avoid the seasonal winter flu that’s now in high numbers in every state.

Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is mostly common sense, but every step is important: • Wash your hands frequently.

Dear Paw’s Corner: Why do Americans spend so much money on their pets? Couldn’t they save more money if they didn’t indulge their dog or cat with designer sweaters, booties, premium dog food and trendy grooming? — Caryn B., via email Dear Caryn: It’s true that Americans spend more on their pets than anyone else in the world.

According to the American Pet Products Association, spending in 2019 reached $95.7 billion.

Owners spend most of their money on pet food and treats, totaling $36.9 billion last year.

Another expensive item is veterinary care and related product sales (like medications), with $29.3 billion spent.

Why do we spend so much money? Ask any owner, and

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and then throw away the tissue.

• Disinfect surfaces in your environment frequently, such as countertops and doorknobs.

• Never share cups or plates or anything else with those who are sick.

• If you have to be out in public, keep your distance. Stay at least 6 feet away from others. For now, avoid shaking hands.

• If you feel sick, don’t rush to the doctor. Call first and explain your symptoms. If they want you to come in, there might be a special entrance for you to use to keep from spreading germs to others.

Stay healthy. Get enough sleep, eat well and keep your stress down. All of those affect your immune system. And if you haven’t had a flu shot, get one now. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

We don’t want to see them suffer, and like any beloved family member, we are willing to spend far more money on their health and comfort than we would on ourselves.

Designer doggie sweaters aren’t just stylish, they protect our dogs from the elements, and the higher-priced sweaters tend to be more comfortable and better fitting. Booties prevent cuts to the pads on their paws when walking in the city or on icy pavement, minimizing pain and possible infections. High-quality dog food costs more, but the payoff is in better overall health and a longer life. And grooming, for the most part, plays a key part in keeping pets healthier and more comfortable. (With the exception of scrotum glitter. I’m not quite sure about that one.)

Desert Theatreworks presents ‘The Producers’ At the Indio Performing Arts Center

Based on the 1968 film, Mel Brooks’ “The Producers” is a laugh-out-loud, outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical-comedy that has been a smash hit since its 2001 debut. Fading Broadway producer Max Bialystock is desperate to get to the top of his profession again, and finds an unlikely ally in mousy accountant Leo Bloom, who predicts that one could make far more money with a flop of a show than with a hit. Together, the two set out to produce the worst musical ever to hit Broadway. Unfortunately for them, their show is a huge hit! With no shortage of show-stopping musical numbers, and Brooks’ signature humor keeping audiences in stitches, “The Producers” is definitely far from a flop. Experience all the madcap fun from this tony award winner for best musical.

The Café at Shields Date Garden will awaken your tastebuds

his charming café is situated on an open-air patio with the Santa Rosa Mountains towering in the background and surrounded by colorful umbrellas, linen-covered tables and fairy lighting. The pet friendly environment offers vantage points of a scenic lake and palm tree garden. Offering live music during certain afternoons, the menu here opens up a whole new world to diners, combining flavorful California cuisine, gluten free and vegetarian dishes and numerous recipes with dates, dates and more dates.

In addition to fresh juices like orange, cranberry, apple and grapefruit, breakfast serves up options like Belgium waffle, smoked salmon breakfast sandwich, French toast and pancakes prepared with blueberries or dates ($12-$18). Lunch features starters like chipotle crab cake, three cheese chicken or carne asada quesadilla, spinach dip ($8 and up) and stuffed dates ($3.75 each). Social Security Matters

Will taking my benefit early affect my widow benefit?

By AMAC Certified Social Security Advisor Russell Gloor Dear Rusty: My husband is 70 and has been taking Social Security for several years. His benefit is $2,100 per month. I am 60 and will turn 61 in March. I have very little built up and my expected SS benefit at my full retirement age is $1163 and $829 if I choose to take it at age 62. We are comfortable with our current income, but the benefit at 62 is enticing. I want to know how taking it at 62 would affect my situation if my husband predeceases me. Would I then be able to exchange my benefits for his? Please advise. Signed: Planning Ahead.

Dear Planning: Taking your own SS benefit early (before your full retirement age) won’t affect the amount of your survivor benefit should your husband predecease you. The only thing that would affect your survivor benefit is the age at which you claim it.

So yes, you could claim your own benefit first and then switch to your survivor benefit later without hurting your eventual survivor benefit. If you have reached your full retirement age (FRA) when your husband passes, your survivor benefit will be 100% of the amount your husband is receiving at his death, instead of your own smaller benefit. But if you take the survivor benefit before your FRA, it will be actuarially reduced according to the number of months prior to FRA it is claimed. To be clear, if your husband were to pass before you reached FRA, you have the option to wait until your FRA to claim the survivor benefit (so you can get 100% of his benefit). In other words, you could continue to collect your own benefit until your survivor benefit reached 100% at your FRA (a survivor benefit reaches maximum at FRA).

Be aware, though, that there is another consideration if you claim your own SS benefit before you reach your full retirement age. If you are still working and claim your benefit before your FRA, you’ll be subject to Social Security’s “earnings limit” which, if exceeded, will cause SS to take back future benefits equal to 50% of the amount you exceeded the limit by (the 2020 limit is $18,240, but it changes annually). If you have substantial earnings from working, that could mean you will go some number of months without benefits (depending upon your earnings level). In the year you reach your FRA (but prior to your FRA) the earnings limit goes up by 2.6 times and the penalty is less, and once you reach your FRA there is no longer an earnings limit. But, I want to make sure you’re aware that collecting early and exceeding the earnings limit will affect your benefits. If you go months without benefits because you exceeded the earnings limit, SS will give you time credit for those months when you reach your FRA, which will result in a small increase in your own SS benefit at that time.

But the bottom line is that collecting your own Social Security benefit early will not affect your eventual survivor benefit. Only the age at which you claim it, if earlier than your FRA, will affect the amount of your survivor benefit. And, by the way, your FRA as a widow is 4 months less than your normal FRA because SS takes 2 years off of your birth year to determine your “widow’s FRA.” This article is intended for information purposes only and does not represent legal or financial guidance. Irish Soda Bread • 4 cup all-purpose flour, plus more for surface • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 6 tablespoon cold butter • 1 cup dried currants • 2 teaspoon caraway seeds • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Grease large cookie sheet.

2. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda. With pastry blender or 2 knives used scissor-fashion, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in currants and caraway seeds, then buttermilk until flour is evenly moistened.

3. On a well-floured surface, knead dough 8 to 10 times just until combined. Shape into flattened ball; place on cookie sheet.

Cut 1/4-inch-deep “X” into top.

New Option to Treat Enlarged Prostate Dear Dr. Roach: I am a 66-year old male, who is healthy with a very active life, both physical and sexual. Like many men my age, I have an enlarged prostate that my doctor monitors during annual visits. It doesn’t impair my life, with the small exception of being annoying (waking up nightly to a weak or slow urinating stream), and it doesn’t bother me too much during the day, except once in a while when I have to urinate a little more than usual. Every now and then I’ll try an over-the-counter prostate supplement, but they never work. I will NOT go for a surgery because it’s not really necessary.

I just read about a new revolutionary treatment option called a prostatic lift device, which is supposed to “lift and remove the prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra (the passageway that the urine flows through).” It says, “Tiny implants are placed to hold the tissue in place, like tiebacks on a window curtain, leaving an unobstructed pathway for urine to flow normally again.” They go on to say that treatment typically takes under an hour, preserves sexual function, doesn’t require cutting, heating or removal of tissue.

Compared with other BPH surgeries, this system is supposed to have a strong safety profile with minimal side effects. Have you ever heard of this? Do you think

it’s safe? It sounds great. However, the thought of tiny implants being placed inside of me and staying there scares me. — V.A. Answer: The prostatic urethral lift procedure is yet another option for men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The procedure does involve the placement of small implants. The procedure is said to be easy to perform (easy for a urologist, that is), and improves quality of life and measures of urinary flow.

In a study of 206 men, none developed sexual troubles after the procedure. It has significant benefits over traditional surgery: Recovery is faster and has less risk of sexual side effects, but traditional surgery improved urinary flow and complete bladder drainage more than the urethral lift procedure. Also, 14% of men who had the lift procedure needed the traditional surgery within five years.

The implants seem to be safe and do not affect the ability to do surgery if necessary.

I wouldn’t recommend this procedure nor a surgical procedure — or even an alternative procedure like laser, microwave, plasma vaporization or water vapor ablation -- without a trial of prescription medication first. They had a craving To what lengths would college students go for a savory fast-food treat? Members of the track team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY had a craving recently for Chick-Fil-A but the chain’s nearest eatery was an hour and a half away, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. It turns out, however, that there is a Chick-Fil-A outlet inside the Albany International Airport located less than 20 minutes from campus. So, the track team ponied up enough cash to buy a $98 ticket, the cheapest ticket available, allowing teammate Vincent Putrino to clear security and purchase a $227.28 team lunch.

Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians and The Living Desert to host free Desert Wildlife Celebration The Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians and The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens are partnering to present the Desert Wildlife Celebration, a familyfriendly complimentary event open to everyone on Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at Tortoise Rock Casino Live at the Rock Outdoor Venue, 73829 Baseline Rd, Twentynine Palms.

The day’s events, open to all ages, include meeting and learning about the desert wildlife, interactive educational experiences, enlightening chats, fun crafts, unique games, amazing face painting, and a fun photo booth. In addition, there will be live music broadcast by Z107.7FM and a free, boxed lunch while supplies last.

“One aspect of The Living Desert’s mission is to educate the public about desert wildlife and this free event is a great opportunity to do just that,” said Dr. James Danoff-Burg, Director of Conservation at The Living Desert. “One of our desert tortoise ambassadors will be there and we encourage everyone to come out and learn how to help protect our

desert animals.”

“This is our third year of hosting this desert wildlife, interactive, educational event,” said Darrell Mike, Chairman of the TwentyNine Palms Band of Mission Indians. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with The Living Desert and other high desert community organizations to celebrate our precious desert wildlife.”

2. In a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, saute cabbage, celery, onion and carrots for 10 minutes or until tender. Stir in corned beef, noodles and Swiss cheese. Add mushroom soup, mayonnaise, mustard and black pepper. Spread mixture into prepared baking dish.

3. Bake for 30 minutes. Place baking dish on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Divide into 4 servings.

Stand Downs Offer Help for Homeless Veterans Do you need Stand Down services? Or are you willing to help create successful events for homeless veterans? Even though parts of the country aren’t quite out of winter weather, annual Stand Downs are gearing up. As spring and summer fully arrive, the number of events will increase.

Stand Downs, which last from one to three days, provide a long list of services, all in one location.

Legal assistance, haircuts, personal care supplies, counseling on Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, clothing, information about housing, dental screenings ... they offer all this, usually right at one of the VA facilities across the country. Counseling is available as well for mental health concerns, plus substance abuse, health care information and referrals, and much more.

Perhaps you don’t need the services but can offer your help instead, especially if you’re a member of a veterans’ group. Great.

Contact organizers in your area and volunteer. They’ll need drivers, set up, donations of personal care items, you name it. Ask what you can do.

If you plan to go to a Stand Down to access services, bring your DD-214 or its equivalent,
