Step inside the depot for a look around and pick up a Walking Tour Guide. This helpful little pamphlet includes a map of historic downtown Wickenburg and points of interest, all within easy walking distance of the depot. can be found all along the way as you enjoy your walking tour. Some other friendly faces are those of the painted bronzes along the sidewalks. These folks represent actual people in early Wickenburg.

Start out with the school teacher near the depot. Having just stepped off the train in Wickenburg, she is looking down the street hoping to ÀQG KHU ZD\ WR WKH VFKRRO DQG WKH family she will be staying with as she takes on her new job. This is one of nine bronzes listed on the walking tour. Henry Wickenburg’s home beautifully preserved A wonderful piece of Wickenburg history beckons visitors just a few steps from downtown. The former home of the town’s founder stands intact, and lovingly restored by the Wickenburg Historical Preservation Society.

Located at 225 S. Washington St., the home was built by Henry Wickenburg in 1903. A single man, he lived there, near the railroad tracks, until his death in 1905. As the story goes, some neighborhood children discovered him dead from a gunshot wound to the head, under a mesquite tree west of the house. He was buried nearby. Folklore still argues whether it was murder or suicide.

John and Mary Boetto bought the three-room house in 1913, enclosed the front porch, and added a kitchen and bathroom.

The house remained in the Boetto family for 86 years.

Having fallen into disrepair, the home was purchased in 2000 by the Town of Wickenburg. Around that time, former

mayor Larry “Roach� Roberts and Cindy Thrasher became the original incorporators of the Wickenburg Historical Preservation Society, which took an interest in preserving this piece of Wickenburg’s history. In 2006, the Society purchased the Boetto house, as well as the nearby historic cemetery.

Since then, the Society has restored the home, creating a beautiful showcase of yesteryear, along with many artifacts from the period when the house was a home. The Henry Wickenburg Historic Home and cemetery are each listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The project itself, and Thrasher as an individual, each earned the Arizona Governor’s Heritage Honor Award and the restoration was named Project of the Year.

A walk through the old home carries on the memories of the Boetto family and Henry Wickenburg, and reminds visitors of a simpler time. Located on the edge of a mesquite thicket, the

property is now landscaped with native cactus, wildÁRZHUV DQG D PDQLFXUHG \DUG As the years pass, Thrasher has been diligent in continuing to build the historical value of the property.

The most recent addition is a (circa 1900) John Deere farm wagon donated by John Augustine. In order to preserve the wagon, a protective “livery” roof was constructed courtesy of (Sam) Crissman Construction and Jim Swift. Interestingly, the lumber used to build the livery was repurposed from an old building at Baxter Lumber Company – known to have been in business as early as 1909, just a couple blocks from the Henry Wickenburg house on S. Washington Street.

In addition to the recent work, many local individuals and organizations have lent a hand in preserving the Henry Wickenburg Historic Home through the years, including the Questers who have been instrumental in securing grant monies to purchase amenities for the home as well as help fund the livery, Thrasher said.

Celebrating Henry Wickenburg’s 200th birthday Henry Wickenburg was born Nov. 21, 1819. To celebrate two centuries since the birth of the town’s founder, the WHPS is planning activities for Nov. 21-24, 2019. Martina Wickenburg Hubrig, a living relative of Henry Wickenburg, will visit from Essen, Germany, and bring a gift from her city’s mayor to be presented to Wickenburg Mayor Rui Pereira. The birthday party will kick off on Thursday, Nov. 21 with a celebration at the Henry Wickenburg Historic House, including music, cake, guided tours and more. On Friday, the celebration will continue at Vulture City – the nearby town site which sprung up after Henry Wickenburg discovered the lucrative Vulture Mine, which spurred the town of Wickenburg into existence. (Vulture City has recently been meticulously restored and is a ghost town destination to rival any other.) Festivities will continue on Saturday in downtown Wickenburg with music, guest speakers, a “Treasures to Trashe” yard sale, and a cowboy dance and barbeque. Wickenburg and surrounding areas embrace a rich history of treasure seekers who came in the mid-1800s in pursuit of the dream of striking it rich by finding gold. With Wickenburg straddling two counties – Maricopa, which boasts one of the largest gold producing mines in Arizona, and Yavapai, which is ranked first in overall gold production in Arizona – it is no wonder recreational gold mining in Arizona is flourishing today and is one of the favorite past

-times for prospectors in this area.

Wickenburg itself is named after miner Henry Wickenburg who is credited for discovering gold in 1863 and establishing the Vulture Mine in 1866. It is estimated that between 1863 and 1942, the mine produced over 340,000 ounces of gold and 260,000 ounces of silver. Unfortunately, this mine was classified as non-essential during World War II, and was closed.

awaits discovery. This, in addition to the deposits found in desert washes, mild winter climate and public land make the Wickenburg area a mecca for prospectors to search for placer gold with metal detectors and drywashers.

Because searching for this precious metal has become so popular, gold panning clubs, like the one sponsored by Gold Fever Adventures and Resort, offer multiple services to help teach the art of gold prospecting. “We’ve been around for over 19 years, gold panning and helping educate people” stated Jack Tucker, co-proprietor of the Club, and even though he has had his share of luck finding gold, he reminds everyone that “ You’re probably not going to just go out and pick up a gold nugget and become rich right away. You need to know what you’re looking for and how to use the equipment.” Jack adds that “people also need to understand many areas that one might think is public property and open to searching for gold is actually patented or unpatented mining claims that are private property.”

To help enable their members to have access to claims, 19 active unpatented claims have been staked in the club’s name. The Resort also provides approximately 25 acres of property that is dedicated as a Gold Mining Camp. Classes on using pans, and metal detectors, a panning area, an area to run mining equipment and learning safety tips are only a few of the resources that are provided to members.

The Club also provides camping spaces and is expanding, with the RV sites to be available towards the end of the year and a Grand opening in December. Jack Tucker also hosts Gold Fever Radio on the internet and You-Tube segments where his topics range from searching for gold, information on Relics, Ghost Towns and Treasurer hunting. Gold Fever Adventures and Resorts is located about 60 miles west of Wickenburg.

hand in gold panning before you take the plunge, Gold Fever Radio partners with Hanson’s Aggregates of Arizona and the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce during Gold Rush Days in February to provide the weekend favorite Gold Panning Booth.

Hanson’s provides between one to one and a half tons of metal rich sand usually from the San Domingo Wash that has been enriched with additional metals from the Chamber. Volunteers from Gold Fever Radio are on hand to help learn the art of gold panning, answer questions and help everyone have a fun time.

Spirit of the Past is Present at Vulture City ghost town

By Anie Wayman-Trujillo Vulture City is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;ghost town,â&#x20AC;? but unlike many meccas from bygone eras, visitors have no trouble imagining what life was like 150 years ago â&#x20AC;&#x201C; because the town is standing and restored.

All but abandoned after World War II, the legends and buildings were left to the ravages of time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Hanging Treeâ&#x20AC;?, where it is said that at least 18 men met their fate at the end of a rope, towered silently next to Henry Wickenburgâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s battered rock and adobe house. The assay building and bullion room, said to have had millions of dollars of gold ore pass through its doors, was left in shambles, half of the roof collapsed on the abandoned contents. An adobe that was probably the bunkhouse for the miners had walls left to decay. The brothel and boarding house,

perhaps where ladies of night such as Lilly LaFontain, Carmen Camelita and Mexican Rita entertained their gentlemen friends, was hardly recognizable as a building. This was the fate of one RI WKH PRVW DIĂ XHQW WRZQV LQ $UL]RQD XQWLO ZKHQ RZQHUV Rod Prat and Robin Moriarty imagined a new beginning for this city lost to time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we took over the ownership of the city, most of the buildings were a ramshackle mess,â&#x20AC;? Moriarty mentioned, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but we had a vision. We wanted to open up the city to tours and events and restore as many of the buildings as we could, creating a setting that resembled what it was like to live here in the 19th and 20th Centuryâ&#x20AC;?.

during a hay day when an estimated $200 million worth of gold and other riches were excavated before the mine was shuttered in 1942. During its peak, Vulture City housed stores, a school, VDORRQ PHVV KDOO D SRVW RIĂ&#x20AC;FH DQG PDQ\ RWKHU EXLOGLQJV Slowly Prat and Moriarty and their crew began to clean up yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; worth of trash and junk. Building crews began reviving the skeletal remains of the structures, securing the frames of the many dilapidated buildings, repairing adobe and re-setting rock walls. Artifacts that had been strewn about were carefully set aside for display.

As a ghost town, there also are many stories of spirts that still linger. Stories such as the ghost of a young man named Jimmy, who met an untimely death while working with a piece of machinery at the power house, or the ghosts of those hung at the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hanging Treeâ&#x20AC;?, are a large part of this cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lore. Ensuring that the supernatural vibe was respected was such an important part of reviving the town that paranormal events such as Ghost Hunts with Celebrity Ghost Hunters Jay and Marie Yates and segments of TV and internet shows like American Ghost Story have become favorite events. This season, Vulture City will host LWV Ă&#x20AC;UVW 3DUD&RQ HYHQW 6HSWHPEHU ZLWK JXHVW VSHDNHUV workshops and a Celebrity Ghost Hunt. With most of the restoration of the buildings complete, new terraced and grass area have been added to enhance events and palm trees were replanted to replace those long perished, Prat and Moriarty are enthusiastic about the 2019-20 season.

Vulture City will also be showcasing a unique addition this year. In July of 2019, what is believed to be the only remaining home from the mine era, was moved back to Vulture City after occupying property located in Wickenburg, where it had been relocated in 1935.

Every year, musicians from all over gather for the Wickenburg Bluegrass Festival and Fiddle Championship. This year, the fun will take place Nov. 8-10, 2019. he Town of Wi c k e n b u rg Trails Commission is planning an off-road mountain bike race on Nov. 16 at the historic Flying E Ranch. Nestled on the Western outskirts of Wickenburg, the Flying E Ranch boasts unique desert trails and unparalleled views.

The nine-mile course stretches through rugged terrain, sand and hills. By Elizabeth Wagner One thing that makes a town unique is the natural open space that surrounds and winds through it. Wickenburg has no shortage of that. Visitors are drawn to the brilliance of the daytime desert and the majestic and tranquil atmosphere at night.

The Sonoran Desert boasts a delightful array of plants and animals; in fact, it is considered to have the highest plant biodiversity of deserts worldwide. If nature supports the foundational character of a place, then this desert town is certainly a colorful one. From scrub terrain to riparian corridors to parks graced by towering pine and Mulberry trees, Wickenburg offers the best of the desert, including nearly year-round recreation-worthy weather. ,W LV HDV\ WR Ă&#x20AC;QG D SDWFK RI QDWLYH 3DOR YHUGH WUHHV DQG 3ULFNO\ SHDU FDFWXV DURXQG here; however, more elusive is the lush VWUHDPVLGH RI WKH +DVVD\DPSD 5LYHU 3UHserve. Wickenburg is lucky to have an above-ground river and thriving riparian corridor, with a visitor center, just four miles southeast of town on Highway 60.

The visitor center, the building that was the stagecoach stop and later Brill Ranch, showcases a museum-like presentation of history and ecology of the area, including multiple artifacts and relics of nature, that people can hold and interact with. It also provides a running list of recent bird/wildlife sightings. The garden outside the visitor center is a haven for native ZLOGĂ RZHUV 6HYHQ WUDLOV RI YDU\LQJ GLIĂ&#x20AC;FXOW\ allow access to different parts of the preserve, LQFOXGLQJ WKH /\NHV /RRNRXW WUDLO ZKLFK DIfords a stunning hilltop view. There are benchHV DORQJ WKH WUDLOV DQG DURXQG 3DOP /DNH D manmade lake that hosts waterfowl and other aquatic wildlife. The crystal-clear waters of the river, the shade of tall trees, and the presence throughout the year of nearly 300 bird species are refreshing surprises. Classes and activities are offered regularly, and include topics such as the Guided Nature Walk, Build Your Birding Skills, and Creatures of the Night. The Nature Rangers program offers classes and activities for children ages pre-school to 12 with various plant, animal, and conservation themes; schools frequently visit for the excellent nature education available. It is certainly a family-friendly excursion.

The Little Red Schoolhouse Nestled in the center of Wickenburg is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;one-roomâ&#x20AC;? schoolKRXVH WKDW ZDV EXLOW LQ RQ ODQG WKDW ZDV GRQDWHG E\ WKH Garcia family. The facility was a key element of education for RYHU \HDUV XQWLO ZKHQ LW ZDV VROG WR D ORFDO EDQN 7KH bank used it as a branch. When they moved to a new location, WKH\ GHFLGHG WR WXUQ WKH IDFLOLW\ RYHU WR D QRQ SURĂ&#x20AC;W WKH :LFNenburg Cultural Organization (WCO).

Today, the WCO is working to take the schoolhouse back to its roots of education and learning by making the building available to all of the residents of our community. The WCO is planning to upgrade the interior with new audio/visual and sound equipment. Seminars and other types of events could now be staged at the schoolhouse. New comfortable seating and a select number of tables that could be folded and stored will be part of the inside project. In order to meet the curUHQW $'$ UHTXLUHPHQWV DQ $'$ EDWKURRP DQG D UDPS LQWR WKH building have to be added. The WCO has met with an architect and has drawn up plans for an outside bathroom plus a ramp on the side of the building that can access the front door of the schoolhouse.

Upgrades are planned for the sports court (the only outdoor basketball court in our downtown area) and the parking area E\ WKH *D]HER WR DJDLQ PHHW $'$ UHTXLUHPHQWV DQG WR DGG lighting and picnic tables in the park area. The WCO sees these

improvements as the best way to make the park and schoolhouse both useful and accessible to the entire community.

Desert Caballeros Ride is known as the greatest trail ride in the American West.

Western traditions are strong in Wickenburg. One of the longest standing is the Desert Caballeros Ride. Every April, more than 100 men leave town on horseback to camp in the desert for a week. By all accounts, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an experience like no other.

By Anie Wayman-Trujillo Roping cattle has been a part of the western way of life since the 18th Century when the Spanish Cabaerllos and Cowboys started â&#x20AC;&#x153;teamâ&#x20AC;? roping larger cattle and livestock in order to better handle the animals while they were working. When organized Wild West Shows and Rodeos were established, roping cattle was no longer just used as a way of handling livestock; it became a popular event to watch.

Eventually this event grew into organized events and contests between cowboys. Today, Team Roping is one of the several Rodeo events that directly evolved from working cattle and has become one of the biggest sports events for equestrian enthusiasts.

No one knows exactly when team roping became an organized sport but the Professional Rodeo Cowboys AssoFLDWLRQ DZDUGHG WKH ÂżUVW :RUOG &KDPSLRQVKLS 7HDP 5RSing buckle in 1929.

In Arizona, cowboys have always taken roping seriously.

The PRCA website shows that from 1929 to 1969, with the exception of a couple of years, Cowboys from either California or Arizona took home the Championship for roping.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is no wonder in the late 1950â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when Art and Patricia Rodgers of Wickenburg fame started a roping club in Wickenburg, it was an instant success.

The Everett Bowman Rodeo Arena and Grounds was not

yet built back in those days, so the Roping Club originally KHOG LWÂśV URSLQJ DQG JDWKHULQJV LQ D ODUJH ÂżHOG RZQHG E\ the Woods family located off of Palm St. Later the ropings were held at the arena next to the old Bowmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Barn and in the late 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the Club moved to the newly established Everett Bowman Arena where the Club actually helped put in the water lines to get the arena up and going. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Back in its inception, the club was more than just about ropingâ&#x20AC;? says Bruce Meier, proprietor of Benâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Saddlery and a past member of the Club. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I remember they practiced on Wednesday nights all year round. In the winter they roped every Sunday and in the summer they roped every Saturday night. They were always having pot lucks or BBQâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and once a month they held fun daysâ&#x20AC;? All of the outings were very family orientated, Bruce adds, â&#x20AC;&#x153;one of the signature roping series the club hosted, the Pro/AM was particularly special to those just learning how to rope. No number sysWHP WKHQ WKRVH ZKR ZHUH FODVVLÂżHG DV DPDWHXUV FRXOG HQter this roping with ropers who were better skilled or roped professionally.â&#x20AC;? Usually 3 steers for 20 or 25 dollars, Bruce remembers that there were payouts at the end of each roping and at the end of the season the amateur who had won the most money in that series would win the buckle.

Teaching the art of roping to kids and to just anyone who wanted to learn was also a priority. Bruce remembers Art

and members like Jim Custer would spend time helping anyone who wanted to improve their roping. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a special time in Wickenburgâ&#x20AC;? Bruce recalls, â&#x20AC;&#x153; One of the buckles I won I wear all of the time and I think we owe a lot to Art and Patsy for creating the beginning of this roping legacyâ&#x20AC;?.

The Roping Club disbanded in the late 1990â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s but by then team roping in Wickenburg was a way of life. In 1992 Leo â&#x20AC;&#x153;Beaverâ&#x20AC;? Bird, Wrangler for the Wickenburg Inn Dude Ranch and fellow wrangler Terry Ellenberger had started hosting ropingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at the Dude Ranch. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mainly these ropings attracted the local ropers and ranchersâ&#x20AC;? said Dee Dee (Bird) Smith, â&#x20AC;&#x153;in 2001 when the Dude Ranch closed Beaver wanted to keep putting on ropingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when Horse World was built off Rincon Road. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You could go practice on Wednesday nights or just about any time someone asked to practice for $10.00 a manâ&#x20AC;?, Dee Dee remembers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There were ropingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s every Saturday in the winter, but the one event that really drew the ropers was the Tuesday,â&#x20AC;?Over 40 #10 drawpotâ&#x20AC;?. Indeed that roping was instrumental in putting Wickenburg on the map with an average of 500-600 teams, and some ropiings hosting up to 900 teams. When Horse World sold, Beaver moved his ropings to the Everett Bowman Arena and Rodeo Grounds where he put on events until 2012 when he retired.

By 2012, team roping had become more than just a weekend sport in Wickenburg. The 2012 Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce website lists 7 arenas in the Wickenburg, Morristown and Agulia areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that hosted ropingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

from November to April. For the fall of 2019 and winter of 2020, ropers can expect an event every day of the week, IURP SUDFWLFH URSLQJV GUDZ SRWV 4XDOLÂżHUV DQG WKH (YHQW Finals that Wickenburg is now famous for.

Looking back at the history of team roping in Wickenburg, every milestone, from the Roping Club, to Beaverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Horse World, to events like the NTR National Finals has helped bring Wickenburg the title of Team Roping Capital of the World. This October at least six arenas are set to open up in the Wickenburg area alone making the 20192020 one of the most anticipated yet. Itsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sure to be wild and fun so residents and ropers, grab a rope, saddle up and enjoy the ride.

The excitement in Wickenburg builds each year approaching the second full weekend in February as local residents join in the planning for the annual heritage event known as Gold Rush Days. *ROG 5XVK 'D\V EHJDQ LQ under the direction of the RoundUp Club (now the chamber of comPHUFH /RFDO RUJDQL]DWLRQV FDPH together to promote this event, including many of the dude ranches in Wickenburg and surrounding areas.

Gold panning was incorporated into the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities, and a location was chosen north of town on WKH +DVVD\DPSD 5LYHU 7KDW Ă&#x20AC;UVW celebration occurred on a rainy day in January when nearly 100 people found gold and enjoyed the rodeo, making a successful event.

Two years later the date was moved to the second full weekend in February where it remains to this GD\ $ SDUDGH DQG JROG PLQLQJ FRQtests were added, along with the Saddle Club barbeque, and the location was moved to downtown WickenEXUJ %\ WKH PLG V WKH FDUQLYDO melodrama and arts and crafts show were added to the festivities, and the event grew to become a full threeday weekend of activities.

Gold Rush Days organizers estimate that between 50-60,000 people

come to enjoy Wickenburg during those days. Wickenburgâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gold Rush Days parade has become a favorite event around the state, with many participants submitting their entries a year in advance to secure their spot. $WWHQGHHV DUH VXUH WR EH GHOLJKWed by school bands, classic cars and of course lots of horses and unique Ă RDWV 7KH SDUDGH EHJLQV DW D P Saturday. The weekend event kicks off with opening ceremonies on Frontier Street Friday at 8 a.m. The carnival opens Thursday night at 5 p.m. The rodeo runs all weekend, along with the old-tyme mellodrama each evening at the historic Saguaro Theatre.
