harles M. Schultz’ popular comic strip characters jump off the page in this musical comedy featuring the Peanuts gang, based on the original 1967 musical comedy with music and lyrics by Clark Gesner. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, Sally and Schroeder experience the joys and perils of childhood in a fun, musical romp that allows every audience member to relive a bit of his or her youth while reinforcing the most important aspects of friendship. As the beloved comic comes to life, the whole gang is here: bossy Lucy is hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder who doesn’t give her the time of day, perfectionist Sally is still mocking blanket-toting Linus, Snoopy is in the doghouse
and “blockhead,” himself, Charlie Brown, is a loveable loser who ultimately overcomes bullying and the harsher elements of day-to-day life. Brief vignettes span the months from Valentine’s Day to Beethoven Day, from wild optimism to utter despair. The sweet, joyful innocence of the Peanuts gang encompasses a sense of playfulness and reassurance. On March 7, 1967, the musical premiered off-Broadway at Theatre 80 in the East Village. In a 1999 Broadway revival, the character of Patty was replaced with Sally Brown, inspired by the same change Schulz made in his animated TV adaptation. The cast featured Anthony Rapp as Charlie Brown, B.D. Wong as Linus, Ilana Levine as Lucy and Stanley Wayne Mathis as Schro-
eder. Also featured were Kristin Chenoweth and Roger Bart as Sally and Snoopy, with each winning the Tony award in the respective category. The original Broadway revival recording was released by RCA Victor/ BMG on March 9, 1999. A favorite stage production because of its simplicity in staging and cast, the show will treat viewers to tunes like, “My Blanket and Me” (Linus and Company), “The Kite” (Charlie Brown), “The Doctor Is In” (Lucy and Charlie Brown), “Beethoven Day” (Schroeder and Company), “The Red Baron” (Snoopy) and others. This heartwarming performance and familiar tale will prove once again that it’s a crowd- pleasing classic for all ages.

T
he desert’s favorite Thursday night street fair has reopened, featuring arts, crafts, food and entertainment galore. The street is closed to vehicular traffic and transformed into a festive, pedestrian adventure with a wide variety of vendor booths where visitors can browse as well as buy against a backdrop of live music. Finds include Southwestern art, fresh produce, bakery treats, fresh flowers and plants, candles, soaps, lotions and unique musical CDs, showcasing vendors such as Angel Breads, Bobo Jewelry, Copper Gulch Design, Disabled American Veter-
ans, Hawaiian Lei Bath & Body, Mattey’s Mutts, Palm Springs Animal Shelter, Old School Lou Candles, Robertson Roasted Almonds, Wic’s Photography and dozens of others. One of the most inviting parts of the fair is that many downtown Palm Springs businesses and restaurants stay open late, giving shoppers the chance to stop in for cold beverages, appetizers or dinner before, during or after a stroll up and down the display of colorful and creative booths. Visitors are able to stop and chat with proprietors at the booths, learning more about their products and developing contacts for future shopping.

t’s over 60 years later and the Beatles seem to be more popular than ever, having paved the way for modern rock and roll music and the phenomenon of adoring fans. The alliance of John, Paul, George and Ringo formed, arguably, the most influential band of all time, and they were integral to the development of 1960’s counterculture and popular music’s recognition as an art form. The Emmy Award Winning Fab Four is regularly hailed as one of the best tribute shows out there due to the performers’ precise attention to detail. With uncanny, note-for-note live renditions of Beatles’ classics
such as “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Yesterday,” “A Day In The Life,” “Twist And Shout,” “Here Comes The Sun” and “Hey Jude”, the Fab Four practically make audiences think they are watching the real thing. Their incredible stage performances include three costume changes representing every era of the Beatles evolutionary career, and this loving homage has amazed audiences in countries around the world, including Japan, Australia, France, Hong Kong, The United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico and Brazil, replicating the global influence of the original band.

ountry Night at Lit transforms into an exciting outdoor tribute show at the Rock Yard with this Keith Urban inspired performance featuring John Brodersen as Keith Urban. Few artists have captured the world’s heart and fan base like the New Zealandborn Australian-American singer, songwriter and record producer Keith Urban, and now fans are able to channel his high energy sound and on-stage electricity. Audience members find themselves doing a double-take when they see and hear Brodersen, a Wyoming native who spent several years working in studios with
recording artists. In the early 1990s he fronted and toured with his own band, 21 Windows, which won Los Angeles’ Finest competition two years in a row. He opened his Longshadow Ranch Winery in Temecula where he hosts concerts every weekend, often sitting in with the musical acts. Covering all the famous hits and ballads, the musicians perform the songs fans love. From Urban’s first Grammy-winning song, “You’ll Think of Me,” to the tender ballad, “Tonight I Wanna Cry,” Urban Skies takes you on a journey through the tunes of Billboard’s biggest country star of the 2000-2010 decade.

CURTAIN TIME
Discover where the curtains will rise this month C urtain up! Light the Lights! Everything’s coming up roses. That joyous line from “Gypsy” easily refers to the comeback of local, live theatre from now on. During the pandemic, several companies worked assiduously to keep their organizations viable and visible, if not vibrant, through creative and digital output. Now, Ron Celona of Coachella Valley Rep (CVRep) said how excited he is to have live (if limited to 50-60% of the house) audiences for a change. “We still have rent to pay.” And one of the ways he has expanded content is to join with The Palm Springs Opera Guild for CVRep’s Summer Classical Music, Sunday afternoon, July 25, featuring worldrenowned opera singer Jacquelynne Fontaine. The young, multi-award-winning singer has over 1,000 national and international performances. She also was Miss California 2006 and was a finalist and talent winner in the Miss America contest. You can see and hear clips of some of her roles (“The Student Prince” and “The Girl in 14G” plus a TV interview) on her website, jacquelynnefontaine.com.
Opera singer Jacquelynne Fontaine.
Curtain Time: Coachella Valley Repertory Company (CVRep) Summer Classical Music, featuring opera singer Jacquelynne Fontaine, 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25. Coachella Valley Repertory, 68510 East Palm Canyon Drive, Cathedral City. Tickets: $30. Advance reservations may be made by calling 760-296-2966. For more information and to take a look at their new season, visit cvrep.org.
New Theatre Alliance (AODT)
Because of concerns about the pandemic, last year six local, producing theatre companies formed the Alliance of Desert Theatres (AODT) for the purpose of reaching out to share ideas, information and general and specific support. The original six were Coachella Valley Repertory (CVRep), Desert Ensemble Theatre Company, Desert Theatreworks, Dezart Performs, Green Room Theatre and Palm Canyon Theatre. The membership has since added Children’s Playtime Productions, Nickerson-Rossi Dance, North Star Theatre, Palm Springs Concerts, Palm Springs Dance Project and Theatre 29. The group, which consists mainly of artistic directors, senior management and business representatives shared information and ideas about bulk purchasing power, co-op advertising, health regulations and other important updates, since the COVID-19 information has been a “moving target.” Alliance contact information: 760-8611006 Tracy Essex or 760-668-2424 Kara Van Dijk, or visit their website at aodt.org.

Over the years, Coyote StageWorks produced many acclaimed productions. Highlights include “Boeing, Boeing,” “The Andrews Brothers,” “Suds,” “Dirty Blonde,” “The Women” (the theatre company’s annual benefit gala), “Tru,” “Art,” “Buyer & Cellar, “Agnes of God,” ”Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” “The Lady with All the Answers,” “The Understudy,” “Greater Tuna,” and “A Doll’s House Part II,” among others.” Many of these productions received local and regional awards and all received critical acclaim, with three productions transferring to theatres outside of the desert. Coyote recently received three significant honors from BroadwayWorld which asked the theatregoing public to submit nominees and vote for their favorite shows and theatre companies.. ‘The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe’ auditions
Theatre 29 will hold auditions for open roles in the drama “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” Auditions will be held on Monday, July 5th at 6 p.m. on the Theatre 29 Main Stage. A complete breakdown of the characters can be found on the Theatre 29 website at theatre29.org/auditions. Those auditioning should dress ready to move and be prepared to read for any role. If you are unable to attend the auditions on July 5th but would still like to be considered for the show, contact the director. For more information, contact Director Char Childs at 760-401-5106 or by e-mail at childsme@msn.com.
