T

he story of King Arthur pulling the sword from the stone is a familiar tale that both children and adults, alike, have heard time and time again. But not quite as many are familiar with Arthur’s journey as King and the conflicts he faces as his rule is challenged. The Palm Canyon Theatre will present this Arthurian legend brought to life through the exciting musical Camelot, by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. Camelot is a musical adaptation of the novel The Once and Future King by T.H. White. It premiered on Broadway in 1960, with Julie Andrews starring as Guenevere and Richard Burton as King Arthur. The first show ran over four hours and required several edits to bring the show down to a more reasonable performance time. The original Broadway production won four Tony Awards and even had its own film adaptation of the same name in 1967. Camelot features several familiar characters such as the Knights of the Round Table (including Sir Lancelot), Mordred, and the popular wizard, Merlyn. Palm Canyon Theatre’s production of Camelot features a strong cast lead by Paul Grant (King Arthur) and Se Layne (Guenevere). The musical is directed and choreographed by Derik Shopinski. Show times are 7 p.m. on Thursdays; 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $32-$36. Student tickets are available for $15 with a valid ID and purchased through the Box Office.
