s a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of veterans and active duty military personnel are on lockdown, many suffering from traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or substance abuse. With the additional challenge of social isolation, finding ways to combat depression, anxiety and loneliness is critical. That is why Help Heal Veterans (Heal Vets), a nonprofit founded during the Vietnam War, has gone into overdrive, shipping more than 90,000 free craft kits since the beginning of the pandemic and creating a newly designed kit to help veterans make the masks they need to stay healthy and safe. Operating on the principle that not all medicine comes in a bottle, Heal Vets distributes kits in craft categories like masks, leatherwork, models, woodwork, jewelry, paint-by-numbers, needlecrafts, poster art, scrapbooks and more. Crafting can provide therapeutic and rehabilitative benefits, including improving fine motor skills, cognitive functioning, memory and dexterity, and can help alleviate feelings of anger and the severity of negative behaviors triggered by PTSD and TBIs. With demands flooding in due to the COVID-19 pandemic, kits have been distributed to more than 90 Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers around the country

With many of the nation’s veterans labeled high-risk now in lockdown with little contact from others, (no visitors, no family allowed, no volunteers and limited staff interaction), it is particularly important to address suicide prevention, according to McClain.
“We’re working closely with the VA Suicide Program to start including VA-produced suicide prevention awareness and education material with our kits,” he says. “Our concern is that during this time of increased stress from isolation and financial uncertainty, some veterans may be at higher risk of taking their own life. Anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges can be exacerbated during this quarantine period. Luckily, there are tangible ways to support isolated and sick veterans in their most significant time of need.

Americans spent almost $96 billion on their pets in 2019, over $5 billion more than they did in 2018. But almost none of that can be deducted from federal taxes. Here’s what you can’t deduct: medical expenses, training or maintenance (like grooming and

vice, and unfortunately, around here those have been canceled. One way to get around this is to have your own shredder. They can be ordered online, typically for less than $40. Learn the difference between strip cut, cross cut and confetti cut. Pictures can be deceptive, so read the specs for the machine. Some will only shred small receipts. Plays and dinners: Once you hear that an event you’d paid for is being canceled, start right away to get your money back. The group might ask that you let them keep your money for their expenses, saying you can claim it as a donation on your taxes. You might consider it, but don’t assume you can get a credit for the same event next year. Better to get your money in hand now. There are so many other events -- senior games and fitness clinics, summer banquet and dance, the legal help event, monthly tech help -- all likely canceled for the foreseeable future. But be prepared to explain how the pet is essential to your business. • If you donate money or goods to a registered nonprofit animal shelter or animal advocacy group, this counts as a charitable deduction. Make sure to get a receipt. • Finally, you can set up a trust fund to care for your pets should they outlive you. Talk to an estate attorney about this option and any potential tax benefits. Stuffed New Potatoes: A Spanish Tapas Snack Spanish tapas are hearty snacking heaven. They’re a specialty of Spain, enjoyed between meals, and sometimes people combine many different tapas to make a full meal. Typically, tapas may include a simple bowl of cold marinated olives, mushrooms, artichoke hearts or kid-friendly and popular stuffed potatoes. These hand-held potatoes are a unique and fun after-school snack. Just pop them in the microwave, start reciting the rhyme “one potato, two,” and in minutes they’ll be baked. You also might want to put them on your dinnertime menu once in a while. As a satisfying side, you can vary the chopped fixings with the meal and individual tastes.
Spanish Tapas Stuffed New Potatoes • 6 red new potatoes, each about 2 inches across • 1/2 cup sour cream • Chopped toppings such as hard-boiled eggs, bacon, tomatoes, radishes, cucumber, salad onions, chives and dill 1. Take a few small bowls from the kitchen cabinet, and fill them with the individual toppings. The results are always colorful and appetizing.
2. Scrub and clean the potatoes with a little vegetable brush. It takes only a minute or two. 3. Cut each potato in half, and then trim a flat piece off each bottom so that the potato halves sit upright. 4. Place them upright on a microwave-safe plate and cover with microwave-safe wax paper, parchment paper or a microwave-safe lid. Wrap or cover to allow steam to escape. Cook on high for about four minutes, or until tender. 5. Arrange the warm halves on a flat platter. Use a melon-ball scoop or a teaspoon to dig out a little pocket from the center of each half. (Save and refrigerate the scooped-out portion for a scrumptious Spanish omelet the next morning -- just add a little onion and salsa!) 6. Now it’s fill-’er-up time for your hungry grazers. Spoon a dollop of sour cream in each potato’s cavity. Go to the bowls of delectable toppings, and spoon or sprinkle choices over the top. Grab a napkin or small plate, and it’s ready to enjoy! While the message is a beautiful one, I’m with you -- I don’t like vague endings. And if you missed the finale, all 22 episodes of “God Friended Me” can be streamed on CBS All Access.
Q: Did I hear correctly that the show “God Friended Me” just had its series finale? I really like the show, but if that was the end of it, we still didn’t get any answers as to who was behind the God Account. They left us hanging. This is a great, positive show that we need right now. -- K.L. A: Yes, unfortunately, “God Friended Me” aired its two-hour series -- not just season -- finale in late April. The creators of the show didn’t get much notice of its cancellation by CBS, but feel they did the ending justice. If you saw the scene on the mountaintop, that was actually filmed for the very first episode, but the footage wasn’t used until the finale. The producers also stitched together an ending with more recent takes. In an article on Deadline.com, co-creator Bryan Wynbrandt explained why fans didn’t learn who was behind the God Account: “In the spirit of the show, searching for one’s own place in the world, for Miles [Brandon Micheal Hall], his journey was less about him getting the answer and more about him being ready to receive it. Whether it’s God or not God, it was about getting him to a place where he’s open-minded and unencumbered by the tragedies of the past and he was fully open to the answer. That was ultimately the journey, and that’s what the mountaintop represents. Who it was is less important.”
Q: I heard that they are bringing back the family-friendly reality show “Wipeout.” How are they going to do this with the pandemic? Do you know when episodes will air? -- T.K. A: Yes, “Wipeout” will be back -- someday. The hit show aired on ABC from 2008 to 2014 and was recently acquired by the TBS cable channel for a planned 20-episode run, but it hasn’t been filmed yet. The obstacle courses should be similar to the slippery ones that fans are familiar with, but TBS is adding some new challenges. Brett Weitz, general manager of TBS, said that casting the competitors will only be done “virtually” for now due to the pandemic. Applicants can check out wipeoutcasting.com for more information. Q: Is “Westworld” going to be back on HBO? I really hope it continues, but it doesn’t seem like many people talk about it anymore, so I wonder if it’s lost viewers. -- P.B. A: The ratings must be good enough because the sciencefiction Western has been given the green light for a fourth season. Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton and Ed Harris star in the series, which had only eight episodes for its critically acclaimed third season but drew an impressive 9 million viewers. He Can’t Find Relief for Itchy Ear Canal Dear Dr. Roach I just turned 68. For the past couple of months, my ear canals have been very itchy. Also, my wife was constantly cleaning earwax out of my ears. Now for some reason I no longer produce earwax, but my ears itch a lot. Do you have any idea what may be causing this? How do I stop the itching? I have tried olive oil. It seems to work but not really that well. A doctor looked in my ear and said the ear canals look fine. -- R.K.

Answer Itching in the ear canals is common, but usually an exam is able to lead the examiner to at least suspect a diagnosis. An incipient ear infection is one common reason, but your issue has been going on for months. Skin conditions that itch, such as eczema, is another common one. The doctor might have seen this, but sometimes the findings are subtle. Just having dry skin is a common cause, especially in winter, and olive oil is one treatment, but if it isn’t working it’s time to stop. I often see people make their problem worse by using inappropriate therapies, especially peroxide, and also by putting objects in the ear to scratch it. This can lead to abrasions, lacerations and worse that I won’t horrify you with. I would get the ear looked at again, and if there still is nothing to see, one treatment is a mild prescription steroid drop for a period of time. Make Memorial Day More Than a Holiday The Memorial Day holiday originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers. Today, the holiday commemorates all of those who sacrificed their lives for our country while serving in the U.S military. It is observed every year on the last Monday of May. Originally, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day because the graves of dead soldiers were cleaned and beautified with flowers and flags. Moina Michael is credited with the idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died. In 1915, she was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to raise money for charities serving soldiers in need. In 1922, the VFW began to sell poppies and expanded the program to selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. The “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed in December 2000, and asks that at 3 p.m. local time, all Americans “voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of Remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.’” This year, I would like to expand the Moment of Remembrance to include all the lives we’ve lost to COVID-19, especially those who were hospital staff and essential workers. On behalf of myself, my family and a grateful nation, thank you to all those in the military who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to those who lost their lives fighting in the war against COVID-19. This Memorial Day holiday is dedicated to all of you. In times past, Memorial Day was the unofficial start of the summer vacation season. As the country slowly re-opens, we may be able to have family gatherings again if we adhere to the health guidelines under our “new normal.”
• 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend) • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 2 teaspoons steak sauce • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon freshly pepper • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 1 1/2 ounces Meunster cheese, thinly sliced, cut into 1 1/2-inch squares • 3 red tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick • 8 three-inch mini brioche buns, split in half
Sriracha Mayo Sauce
• 1 cup mayonnaise • 1/2 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt • 1 1/2 tablespoons Sriracha • 1 teaspoon honey or agave syrup • 1 teaspoon lemon juice • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
To make the burgers:
Gently combine the beef, parsley, 2 teaspoons of the Worcestershire sauce, the steak sauce, salt and pepper in a bowl. Set aside. Heat the oil and butter in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and the remaining teaspoon of the Worcestershire sauce and cook, stirring occasionally, until translucent, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
To make the Sriracha Mayo Sauce:
In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream or Greek yogurt, Sriracha, honey or agave, lemon juice, salt and pepper until well-combined. Set aside. 1. Heat grill to medium-high. Gently form meat mixture into 8 one-inch-thick patties. Grill 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare. Top with a square of cheese after flipping the burger. Close the grill for 30 to 60 seconds to melt the cheese. Warm the buns on the grill. 2. VA OIG Finds Pattern of Deficiencies The Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Veterans Affairs has been busy following up on allegations and conducting inspections and investigations. The OIG was asked to investigate deficient staffing and competencies in sterile processing at one of the VA’s health care facilities. The end result: For six years the facility hadn’t followed manufacturer instructions for sterilization. Specifically, medical staff reas-

sembled gadgets before sterilizing. No patients were harmed, the OIG determined. But that same facility failed to follow guidelines for having a certain level of staff in the assistant chief position. At another facility, the OIG’s inspection determined that the cardiac care of five patients was deficient. Specifically, a cardiologist didn’t follow up with a patient and didn’t tell the patient’s doctor about the results. The patient died. In another assessment a cardiologist failed to provide follow-up care and did not correctly read electrocardiograms for four patients. Another facility was found deficient in mental health care. A homeless veteran received 90 days of in-house mental health care, at which time he was released. The psychiatrist requested an extension of care beyond that 90 days. The request was denied because the patient had Medicaid and the VA

could transfer his care elsewhere. The VISN Chief Medical Officer was not notified (as is required). The physical and IT infrastructure upgrades at one VA facility were found to be deficient. The telecommunications rooms were not going to be completed until four months after the scheduled start date. Some 31% of end user devices hadn’t been upgraded. And authorization from the DOD to connect to the new health record system hadn’t been received. The OIG’s opinion: The VA committed to the start date without asking the facility about the status of the center. A year before that, the VA had announced a start date without assessing facility infrastructures. Did you notice the pattern in the cases above? The word for the day: deficient.
