FOLDED HILLS WINERY NEW TASTING ROOM IN MONTECITO AND SOON IN GAVIOTA Nestled in the Santa Ynez Valley, right off Highway 101, is Folded Hills Winery and Tasting Room. This 600-acre climatic sweet spot of undulating hillsides just ten minutes from Gaviota Beach is a fresh breath of air. About 19 years ago, Kim Busch and her husband, Andy, were looking for the perfect spot in California to call home and raise their children. “It’s a beautiful place. There are artesian wells on the property, and you can drink water straight out of them. But winemaking isn’t as glamorous as it looks,” said Kim. When the couple discovered a property called Folded Hills in the Santa Ynez wine appellation, they hadn’t seriously considered planting grapevines. But when they did, Kim and Andy were pleasantly surprised to learn which grape varietal grew best. “When we told friends that we were planting grapes they all said, you must plant what you love to drink. I loved Pinot Noir; Andy loves beer. The land wasn’t having either. So, we tested for months, asking what varietals this spot wanted. The land said Rhône. So that is what we planted and haven’t looked back. And guess what? I much prefer Grenache to Pinot! Andy still loves his beer!” Andy, who hails from the Anheuser-Busch brewing family, had previously managed Grant’s Farm in St. Louis, Missouri. On this
8
ancestral property is a 281-acre wildlife animal preserve of 100 species of animals, a beer garden and Anheuser-Busch’s iconic Clydesdale horses. It was here that Kim and Andy’s children also grew accustomed to a working farm.
An Organic Focus on Purity “We wanted to keep our children’s hands in the dirt and to teach them to be good stewards of the land,” Kim said. “The vineyard idea came when we bought the property contiguous to Folded Hills. We also discovered that there had been a preProhibition vineyard on the property and that the original farmsteaders made wine in the basement of the farmhouse. “Because we wanted to keep the land agricultural and organic, we decided to add grapes to the crops that are currently being farmed by local legend, organic farmer, Tom Shepard. This is important to us,” Kim explained, “because we came to the wine business from a land perspective, we needed to honor the terroir that is there – the soil, the climate, the organic valley. All of it needed to be honored.”
A Cohesive Team “Folded Hills wines are truly handmade, all the while maintaining thoughtful, attentive craftsmanship,” Kim said. “The

result is a collection of fresh, pure, expressive Rhône wines from the Santa Ynez Valley. Our varietals include Grenache and Syrah, and our white Rhône grapes, Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche and Marsanne, are grown onsite. “Ruben Solorzano, the grower, is well thought of in the industry,” Kim said. Known as the “grape whisperer,” Ruben’s intuitive viticultural know-how has produced some of the best grapes in the state for over 30 years. Winemaker Angela Osborne, who hails from New Zealand, was already making fabulous Grenache wine for herself before she began making wine for Folded Hills. She often includes small portions of whole clusters in her red wine fermentation for structure and depth of flavor. Angela works with Ruben to select the optimum picking times to capture both freshness and flavor, while taking into consideration the vines’ natural response to the lunar cycle. “Angela’s way of winemaking is very hands-off, a very French style. She likes to let the fruit do its thing,” Kim said.“She takes a minimalist approach to winemaking and allows the fruit to show the terroir and character of the grape. You can have harvests from two different years and make the same blends but have different expressions of the wine from one year to another.” >> BY MELISSA CHAVEZ

Kim and Andy Busch now have two new tasting room locations. Located in Montecito’s Lower Village at 1294 Coast Village Road, the Folded Hills Montecito Tasting Room is an intimate spot for hotel guests and tourists. Inside the airy, yet intimate 760-square-foot space, a 16-foot mural of the ranch landscape (and a glimpse of owner Andy and son on horseback) lends an urban country feel. The Montecito location is open Monday through Thursday from 12-6pm, and Friday through Sunday from 12-8pm. Call (805) 694-8086. In Gaviota, finishing touches are being applied to the Folded Hills Estate Tasting Room, which opens around July 10. The original farmhouse will serve as the space for the estate tasting room. Kim and Andy love welcoming their guests to the ranch to unplug and feel a connection to nature, and to the land that is important to them. Heritage Wines: Lilly Rosé, August White, Grant Grenache, August Red, Cluster Grenache Reserves: Estate White, Ballard Canyon Roussanne, Estate Grenache, Ballard Canyon Syrah “Wherever you decide to visit Folded Hills, you can be sure it will be casual and relaxed. We are most comfortable in dirty jeans and boots. The ranch house and the tasting rooms are made for that. Come in and put your feet up,” urged Kim. www.FoldedHills.com (805) 694-8086 9
Whale Rock Music & Arts Festival 2019 Lineup Announced Headliners: Toots & The Maytals | Beats Antique | Xavier Rudd | The California Honeydrops The Udsen family of Castoro Cellars has announced the lineup for their 2019 Whale Rock Music & Arts Festival. Grammy Award-winning and legendary reggae artist Toots & the Maytals along with Australian singer-wongwriter Xavier Rudd, will close Saturday September 14th, and the experimental world-fusion group Beats Antique along with the California Honeydrops will close Sunday September 15th. Toots & the Maytals is one of the true architects of reggae – so much so that “Do the Reggae,” a 1968 single by Toots and his group, the Maytals, is credited with giving the genre its name. Classic songs written and recorded by Toots and the Maytals have been covered by the likes of the Clash and the Specials, and the group was featured in reggae’s greatest breakthrough event – “The Harder They Come,” the 1972 film that became an international sensation. More recently, the group’s album, True Love, won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. At the heart of it all is that voice – drenched in soul, rooted in gospel, and still breathtakingly powerful after almost

Toots & the Maytals four decades in the spotlight. Oakland, California’s Beats Antique is an experimental world-fusion and electronic music group. Formed in 2007 in conjunction with producer Miles Copeland, the group has become noted for their mix of different genres as well as their live shows, which mix samples and heavy percussives with Tribal Fusion and performance art. The styles combined to create Beats Antique's sound are a union of old and new inspirations. There are infusions of Middle Eastern belly dance music, down tempo, hip-hop, old school jazz, afrobeat, and many styles of electronic music. The musicians have been influenced by their diverse musical backgrounds. They

In this seventh year, Whale Rock Music & Arts Festival (formerly known as Beaverstock) will again deliver two stellar days of wine-loving, peace, and jammin’ in the vines, all benefiting Templeton Music Education. In addition to the headliners, the always eclectic lineup will include Xavier Rudd (roots/ folk), The California Honeydrops (street corner soul), The Lil Smokies (bluegrass/ Americana), Lawrence (soul/pop), Ben Morrison of the Brothers Comatose (Americana rock ’n’ roll), T Sisters (folk), Próxima Parada (soul), Swatkins & The

Once “Eager Beavers” sell out, two-day passes are $120 per person until September 1, along with $75 single-day passes. Starting September 1 prices go up to $85 for a single-day and $130 for a two-day pass. Whale Rock Music and Arts Festival features back-to-back band performances on two stages, a gallery of local artists, all-ages yoga, kid crafts and games, Castoro wines, craft beers, hard ciders, food trucks and more. The Udsen family has gifted event proceeds to local, education-based non-profit organizations each year. Total donated over the first six years exceeds $90,000. The 2019 benefactor is again the Templeton Instrumental Music Boosters Association (TIMBA), a parent volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the experiences of Templeton High School musicians. The 2019 Whale Rock Music & Arts Festival will be held September 14-15, amidst Castoro Cellars’ Whale Rock Vineyard in Templeton, California. SLO Coast Wine Collective Unveils New Name, Look The San Luis Obispo (SLO) Coast Wine Collective – formerly SLO Wine Country – announced its new name and look in tandem with the launch of a new website at www.SLOcoastwine.com. “Our new name and look better represent our uniqueness as an intimate ultra-coastal wine region on California’s Central Coast,” said Anne Steinhauer, executive director of SLO Coast Wine Collective.“We are amplifying what makes our wines different and our region so distinctive.” The new SLO Coast Wine website features a new logo mark and content that captures the essence of the SLO Coast experience, particularly the region’s seamless bonds between vine and ocean. The site was created by Makers & Allies of San Luis Obispo, and the new branding initiative is being underwritten by a generous grant provided by the California Department of Food & Agriculture. SLO Coast encompasses two small adjoining AVAs – Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley – as well as neighboring vineyards in the Pismo, Avila and Cambria corridors. An umbrella AVA under the SLO Coast banner is in the works to capture the region’s unified growing conditions. “We have considerable diversity within our region,” Steinhauer said.“Nevertheless, all of our wineries are united by clear commonalities: cool-climate wines, seafront soils, artisanal winemaking, and a distinctive coastal visitor experience.” She added,“With our new name and refreshed look, we are now doing full justice to the singular qualities of the SLO Coast wine experience.”

TACKITT FAMILY VINEYARDS Tackitt Family Vineyards in San Miguel is a boutique, family-owned winery that takes pride in crafting premium wines. Visitors can relax in the 800-square-foot tasting room to chat with winemaker Leon Tackitt or throw a ball outside for the winery dogs to chase if they like. A small stage, pizza oven and bonfire facilities for winery events is all part of the casual charm. Armed with 29 Gewürztraminer grapevines that Leon’s grandfather had planted, he and wife, Cindy Tackitt, began their winery in 2008. With grapes sourced from neighboring vineyards within a five- to ten-mile radius, the couple began making more wines. They include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Sauvignon Blanc, and two rosé wines.
EOD Cellars Fundraising Part of Tackitt Family Vineyards’ community involvement is commitment to veterans who are recovering from post-battle trauma. In recent years, public support for Tackitt Family Vineyards’ EOD Cellars label wines has grown considerably. Tackitt has raised more than

$150,000 at their last three Warriors Helping Warriors events, and an additional $12,000 that was directed to support a service animal for a wounded veteran. “It’s been a fun year. We have raised well over $75,000 in just 12 months,” Leon said. Proceeds from Tackitt fundraising events assist the EOD Warrior Foundation, which helps U.S. military veterans to receive essential health services, educational scholarships, financial sustenance, retreats for Gold Star families, and support for vets coming home from deployment.
Featured Tackitt Wines Perfect for summertime sipping, Tackitt has released the 2018 Risque Rosé for summertime sipping ($27, $20.25 wine club). Risque Rosé is a delicious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. “With the color of pink salmon shimmering in the glass, this wine is truly a wonder,” Leon said. “Swirl it around to release aromas of strawberries, earthy hibiscus and red licorice.” A perennial Tackitt favorite is the 2016 Petite Sirah ($40, $30 wine club). “Anything but small, this Petite is mighty! A structured, bold and masculine wine, it has earthy and meaty flavors that anyone would appreciate,” said Leon. “Smoke lingers on the palette like a good cigar and juniper jumps in at the finish and adds balance. Open up a bottle and pair it with BBQ or lay it down to savor in the future. We experimented a little by allowing only four days on the skins, then we pressed into new American oak to finish fermentation,” Leon explained. “The full body of Petite Sirah was maintained while allowing for the fruit to stand out.” >> BY MELISSA CHAVEZ
Summer Events at Tackitt Red, Wine and Blue on July 6-7 offers Tackitt Family wines paired with tasty treats. HUNT CELLARS
CLASS, COMFORT AND AWARD-WINNING WINES Hunt Cellars sits on the corner of Highway 46 and Oakdale Road, surrounded by vineyards on this well-traveled wine road. Subtly beckoning the visitor to stop and taste their wines, a memorable experience await those who do. Walking into the tasting room you will see a glistening white baby grand piano, artwork adorning the walls, the tasting bar ahead, and surrounding vista. Entering Hunt Cellars’ Tasting room is like walking into your favorite aunt’s living room. The only thing missing is the smell of freshly baked cookies, and David Hunt sitting at the piano (or, if you are lucky, he will be sitting at the piano)!
David Hunt David Hunt is an exceptional man, a visionary and a man who has always followed his dreams. A musician, singer, songwriter, businessman, and winemaker, Hunt began pursuing his lifelong musical passion as a teenager. Speaking about his music, he tells you, “I was very privileged to work with some of the top musicians in the country, from Grammy award winners to artists who recorded 32 or more #1 hits. They helped me in recording my album Rhapsody in Red and my new album, Everything is Possible. Later this year, Everything is Possible is planned to be released as a motivational book, packaged together with the CD.” The title defines Hunt’s personal mantra. Being diagnosed with a genetic eye disease in his teens, which would cause him to eventually lose his sight, Hunt knew he had to make a career elsewhere. the booming economy, Hunt the entrepreneur, built successful companies in both fields, eventually selling them in the mid 1990s, to begin a new venture: Winemaking. As inspirational as Hunt’s personal story is, his wines, and the stories they tell are just as captivating – reflecting his passion.
Striving Toward Perfection Hunt’s 550 acres in Creston abound with micro-climates that are perfect for growing multiple varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, and others. Wine is grown in the vineyard, but it takes a talented winemaker to bring out the best that the land offers up. This, David Hunt does brilliantly. Hunt’s estate-grown, small-lot wines are “aged to perfection.” This is no small boast. All of Hunt’s reds are aged at least three years in barrel and another two in bottle before release. However, red, white or Port – Hunt wines are drinkable upon release, and have years of age ability. On the day I tasted, the first wine poured was an enticing “Guess the vintage,” Sauvignon Blanc. Our party guessed, we were so far off. What we were tasting was the 2008 “Starlight Concerto.” Over the next hour or so, our tasting host, Stan, walked us through the lineup. With wit, humor and knowledge, Stan talked about Hunt’s music, the vineyards, how the wines all had musical themes, pointing out the interconnection between art, music and wine. Hunt’s wine list is like a fine symphony. It slowly builds with a crescendo at the end. The crescendo that we experienced at the end of our tasting, was the Petite Sirah/Syrah Blend “Que Sirah

Syrah.” What made this one of the most exciting experiences for me, was that this was a vertical tasting comparing the 2007, 2008 and 2009 vintages. I don’t think I can remember ever going into a tasting room, and as part of the general tasting menu, being able to enjoy a three-wine vertical, the oldest being a dozen years old. But then, tasting wines at Hunt Cellars goes beyond the expected.
Twenty+ Years Seeking Perfection The wines of Hunt Cellars are constantly a work in progress, seeking perfection. Earning a reputation over the last few decades of producing highly rated wines (awarded scores of up to 98), your tasting will paint a picture of what can be done when you have a winemaker who describes his philosophy as: “I work the wine until I can’t make it any better.” Your tasting at Hunt Cellars will be a 100-point experience. >> BY DON SONDERLING

ANDREW MURRAY VINEYARDS DEFINING ELEGANCE
At the age of 16, Andrew Murray fell in love with Rhône varietals. While travelling in France with his family, he developed what would become a lifelong passion for Rhône wines, especially Syrahs. After studying winemaking abroad, and at UC Davis, Andrew purchased property in the Santa Ynez Valley, determined to make elegant Rhône wines. Over the last 20+ years Andrew Murray Vineyards has become recognized as a premier producer of Rhône varietals. Taste and experience this passion in a bottle, as you explore elegant wines in a surrounding that is simply captivating.
Excite your Senses Driving up the short road past vineyards, seeing the spacious lawn and picnic area, a modern, inviting tasting room awaits you. Choose to taste inside – in a seated area or around one of the tasting bars – or outside – under the oaks or on the grassy lawn. As your attendant pours and explains each wine, your senses will be aroused for a memorable (and yummy) wine tasting experience. In fact, don’t be surprised if Andrew himself is there to pour, chat and have a sip or two with you.
Expect the Unexpected Andrew loves making wines that show off different characteristics of the terroir where grapes are grown. Each micro-climate and soil type reflects the wine individually. Your tasting will include wines from estate-grown grapes, plus wines made from grapes sourced from select vineyards throughout the Central Coast. Andrew also enjoys experimenting with a new vineyard annually, to produce a

wine that truly is unique. He describes this annual adventure in sourcing as something that will “end up as a single-vineyard wine only once, or never at all.” Tastings change depending on availability, so expect to be surprised, educated and enticed by the unexpected. After experiencing the differences that terroir makes, you will understand the love and fascination that Andrew has for Rhône wines. Come sip, sit, and stay awhile. Bring a picnic, your kids and dog. Hang out enjoying the friendliness, hospitality and awardwinning wines of Andrew Murray Vineyards. This is a “must stop” on the Foxen Wine trail, you will be glad you came. >> BY DON SONDERLING

award-winning wine that is recognized for its exceptional value and quality.” Since the early 1980s when Founder Justin Baldwin planted his first Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Paso Robles along California’s acclaimed Central Coast, Cabernet Sauvignon has become one of the region’s premier grape varieties, known for its exceptionally bold and outspoken character. The region’s rich terroir played a key role in JUSTIN’s ability to produce luxury red and Bordeaux-style red blends, which helped the winery become universally known as a top producer of this style in Paso Robles. Following the success of its first 100-percent Cabernet Sauvignon release in 1988, the winery expanded its Cabernet plantings to keep up with the overwhelming consumer demand. Over the next 20 years, these same vines have consistently produced premium quality grapes, earning widespread acclaim for JUSTIN and its Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the most recognized and respected wines to come out of JUSTIN’s worldclass luxury portfolio. The 30th Anniversary of JUSTIN Cabernet Sauvignon will be supported by an integrated marketing campaign including new instore point-of-sale (POS), digital advertising, social media, and print ads in top wine, food, and lifestyle publications throughout the year. With attractive aromas of black fruit and spice, this smooth, readyto-drink JUSTIN Cabernet Sauvignon spends more than a year in small oak barrels that impart depth and complexity and highlight the exceptional balance of flavors and textures that the unique climate and soils of Paso Robles add to this exceptional wine. The palate is dry, nearly full-bodied, with ripe black cherry, cassis and red fruit, baking spice and oak accents. The 2017 JUSTIN Cabernet Sauvignon is an extremely versatile everyday food-pairing wine whether it’s paired with a picnic of artisanal cheese and charcuterie, or a classic steak with pommes frites. The 2017 JUSTIN Cabernet Sauvignon (MSRP $28), is now available at specialty wine retailers, grocery stores, restaurants, hotels and online at www.justinwine.com. Located in Paso Robles, JUSTIN® Vineyards & Winery was founded in 1981 and is known for crafting world- class wines using Bordeaux grape varieties. Widely recognized for their iconic ISOSCELES® Bordeaux-style blend, JUSTIN is also known for their Cabernet Sauvignon. The Vineyard estate, located at 11680 Chimney Rock Road, features a Tasting Room, luxury five-star accommodations at the JUST Inn,® and a Restaurant – making it one of the only wineries on the Central Coast to offer all three options. In September 2018, a new second location, the JUSTIN Downtown Tasting Room opened introducing an expansive wine-tasting bar, lounge, and a full dining room that’s situated prominently on the square along Downtown City Park in the heart of Paso Robles. In addition to its stellar hospitality, JUSTIN consistently receives top honors around the world, establishing itself as a leader in Bordeaux-style winemaking. More than 200 wineries produce critically acclaimed vintages in Paso Robles, Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley. Visitors can head out along the gorgeous country roads to sip their way through the vineyards.
San Luis Obispo’s unusual natural beauty, along with its gentle climate, first attracted the Spanish padres to the area in the 1700s. In 1772, they built the fifth of California’s 21 missions

here, on the banks of San Luis Creek, and named it Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today, many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions.
t’s no wonder the people here call it SLO. No one is in any hurry in the cafes or on the sidewalks, and certainly no one is in any rush to leave. Strangers are genuinely friendly, always ready to talk about their favorite hiking trail or barbecue joint, or to point the way to the winery with the best Pinot Noir. It’s all part of the SLO life, that combination of good stuff that makes visiting here so nourishing to the soul.

BRECON ESTATE WINERY A HIDDEN GEM JUST UP THE ROAD
People visit wine country for wine, blended “just so” to create a lasting, memorable experience. Wine country lets you escape from the outside world, noise, congestion and stress, leaving the “real” world behind, to relax, and slowly sip in your surroundings. As our group exited our car, walking across the bridge toward the tasting room, we could hear the babbling brook, and wind rustling through the trees. Sighting the majestic rows of what are thought to be the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Paso Robles, then viewing the tasting room in front of us, we couldn’t help but decompress, relax and smile. Sitting outside in the comfortable lounge area, a canopy of old oaks above, we watched and listened to the hawks circling above, even being treated to the rare sight of a bald eagle that nested nearby. This was our welcome to Brecon Estate winery where we relaxed while enjoying a selection of unique, enticing, highly rated wines, and learned the stories behind them.
From Wales to Australia to the Central Coast Damian (a Welshman) and Amanda Grindley (an Aussie) are avid cavers, in fact, they actually met in a cave! Having “caved” worldwide made them intricately familiar with different rock and soil formations and terroir in general. When Damian and Amanda decided to purchase a vineyard to pursue their vision of growing grapes and having their own label, Paso Robles beckoned. Damian had spent years traveling the world and making wine in many premier wine districts, after receiving his formal wine education in Australia. The Paso Robles terroir seemed
34
perfect, and an impeccable area for growing grapes to produce exceptional, expressive wine. Purchasing property in 2012 in the Adelaida district was totally coincidental to the fact that Amanda grew up among the historic vines of a beach side suburb in Adelaide, South Australia.
A Conviction The Grindleys got to work planting, growing, harvesting and making wine. It wasn’t long until Brecon Estate wines began receiving awards and accolades. Enticing blends such as “42,” “Conviction,” The “Last Sandwich,” (an elegant blend of Albariño and Viognier), plus others, were quickly sought after. Seven years after purchasing the property, Brecon Estate is recognized as producing exceptional quality wine. Damian believes blends have a life of their own and, year after year, they change, reflecting the land, weather and grapes in different ways. With a Welshman’s sense of humor, most of the wines have been named to tell a story, such as Conviction. Not named after a belief or viewpoint, “Conviction” actually is named after the history of Australia, as “all Aussies came from convicts. Right!” However, to find out the stories behind the other names (such as “42,” Feral Underclass and Haggis Basher), you will have to make a visit to Brecon! Whatever grapes aren’t grown on the estate, are mostly sourced from premier vineyards that are “five minutes by tractor” away, another story you’ll have to find out about when during your visit.

Constantly Exploring Exploration is in Damian and Amanda’s blood, and they love exploring flavors and nuances that are produced by different blends. Always trying new combinations, their wines are refined, exciting and changing. Just as you never know exactly what you will find in a cave while exploring twists and turns, Brecon’s wines and blends display unique characteristics vintage after vintage. Discover your inner explorer as you enjoy a Street,Estate Paso Robles, glass 1322 or twoPark of Brecon wine. Photo courtesy of Zaca Mesa Vineyard & Winery Reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting, Los Olivos is a step back in time, with its flagpole in the city center, to the vintage store fronts that beckon you to have a seat and enjoy the scenery. Dating back to 1860, when it was a stop on the western stagecoach route, the town is full of history from its Victorian homes to the many locals with pioneer ancestors. Now a hub for visitors to the county, Los Olivos has a variety of local restaurants, which complement the wine country experience, with their acclaimed wine lists paired with seasonal menus. Encompassing just five blocks, the downtown is very pedestrian friendly, filled with wine tasting rooms intermingled with craft brew tasting, art galleries and boutiques filled with home décor, gifts and apparel. Pack a picnic and head out for the day to the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail! Start your journey at Zaca Station Road, just off of Highway 101 as you head toward Los Alamos on Highway 154. With close to a dozen wineries on the trail, you can leisurely meander throughout the country roads as they wind through an idyllic setting of vineyards, pastures and farm animals. You’ve definitely come to the right place to indulge in the perfect afternoon of wine tasting!
Come see why Robert Parker, Jr. said... “Production is small, but these wines are well worth seeking out!” Open Daily 10:30-5:30 5249 Foxen Canyon Rd, Los Olivos 805-686-9604 www.AndrewMurrayVineyards.com

Ventura County Sun, Sand, History and Wine Fun! haven to come, sit, sip and relax with old and new friends alike, while sampling their assortment of hand crafted award winning wines. On Friday evenings (between 5:00-8:00pm) you can accompany your tasting with a gourmet cheese platter or small bites as you “time travel” to this Italian retreat, even if just for a few hours. Less than 10 minutes from Magnavino, you’ll arrive at Four Brix Winery in Ventura. Step into this fun, funky tasting roomwinery to savor wines made from grapes that are an homage to four great grape regions: Italy, France, Spain and California. Offering a “tapas menu” to accompany your wine tasting, Four Brix is a special “community.” Live concerts and special events are a constant at Four Brix---the fun never stops here. A few blocks from Four Brix is Panaro Brothers Winery. Being fifth generation Italian-American winemakers, the four Panaro Brothers offer a wide selection of mostly single-varietal wines, grapes sourced from vineyards stretching from Monterey through the Central Coast. You will be warmly welcomed into “la famiglia,” so come sit, sip and enjoy a selection of Italian style wines – once you do you will return often. As we cruise into spring and summer, plan some daytrips to the many unique tasting rooms throughout Ventura County. Please check individual websites for hours of operation, (most being open 3-4 days a week). >> DON SONDERLING *Lyrics from Ventura Highway, by America.
“Ventura Highway in the sunshine, where the days are longer, the nights are stronger than the moonshine, you’re gonna go I know.”* What better reason to go than to spend a rambling day (or two) along the Ventura 101 Freeway (or King’s Highway), from Camarillo to the seaside town of Ventura, (named after Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782), sipping wines, enjoying the sunshine and drive as you meet winemakers in their welcoming, friendly tasting rooms.
So Many Tasting Rooms—Not Enough Time (nut plenty of wine) With more than 20 tasting rooms to choose from, the Camarillo-Ventura corridor is less than a two-hour drive from central Orange County, and an hour or less from greater Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Enjoy the fruitful bounty of what Ventura County has to offer – you won’t be disappointed.
Four Not to Miss Travelling north on the 101 toward Ventura, you may want to make your first stop at Herzog Wine Cellars, in Oxnard. Though a well-known larger winery, Herzog (producing Kosher wines), has a fascinating history, and includes in their line-up smaller lot, limited edition and premium wines. Take the selfguided tour which is educational and fascinating. Magnavino Cellars, is a mile down the road from Herzog. Entering, you will feel transported into a delightful Italian wine country getaway. Robert and Barbara Wagner have created a
