‘The Diary of Anne Frank’: poignant, powerful and timeless By Alison Elsne
F
rances Goodrich and Albert Hackett’s play is based on the true story of a young Jewish girl who kept a diary of her time hiding from the Nazis in an attic of her father’s office during World War II. Frank’s diary documents her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944, during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. It is one of the world’s best-known books and has been the basis for numerous
plays and films. By May 1940, the Franks were trapped in Amsterdam by the German occupation of the Netherlands. As persecutions of the Jewish population increased in July 1942, the Franks went into hiding in some concealed rooms behind a bookcase in the building where Anne’s father, Otto Frank, worked. Many of Frank’s writings share themes and concerns common to teens and families today, making the piece surprisingly timeless and unifying.
The story is one of the most riveting in all literature, putting a human face on the victims of World War II and the Holocaust. The poignant story continues to break hearts while inspiring readers through Frank’s astounding optimism in the face of tragedy. “The Diary of Anne Frank” 2 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. April 25-28. Palm Canyon Theatre, 538 N. Palm Canyon Dr. Palm Springs. 760323-5123, palmcanyontheatre.org
