Enjoy the latest highly acclaimed releases, and any special offerings, in an exclusive and relaxing environment.
For Chocolate Lovers As you enter the tasting room you’ll see a large LED screen advertising the current wine flights available. One of the special flights being offered at Andrew Murray includes a truffle and wine pairing. Truffles from Jessica Foster Confections are paired with wines from the Rhone Zone Flight. The chocolates have tantalizing flavors like curry and cinnamon apple. Don’t worry, however, if you’ve tried one truffle and wine pairing, there will always be a new one to try. Every time the wines in the tasting room change, a new set of truffles are chosen to go with them.

In 2010, after living in Paso Robles for 20 years, with the earth and vines seeping into his mind and soul, John Gleason decided it was time to create his own wine. John described this beautiful area as “the sweet side of the planet,” and with a vision of crafting expressive wines, a new chapter in John’s life was about to unfold. Following a successful career with Microsoft, the planets re-aligned for John. Seeking out his longtime friend Neil Roberts, well known viticulturist of Robert’s Vineyard Services and Clavo Cellars, John discussed collaborating in a winemaking venture. John’s vision was to create wines that would reflect, describe and compliment the human spirit in multiple ways. The name chosen mirrored that vision, when one evening John witnessed the reflection of the moon setting over the Pacific Ocean. Suddenly, a name was born: Two Moons, and the story began. Balance in Wine and Life The wines John wanted to produce were to be well balanced and in sync with a healthy lifestyle. Having played football back in his youth, including playing on the Dartmouth football team, John’s body had taken beatings and punishment for years. Pain and discomfort were constant companions, until John was introduced to Yoga in 2016. Talking about yoga, John will tell, “Yoga changed my life.” It was this life changing event, and the balance he found between mind, body and soul that John focused on to bring out in his wines.

John plan was to produce a line of primarily Rhone wines, food friendly, with a low alcohol content allowing them to show off characteristics of the fruit and terroir. With Neil’s connections, fruit was sourced from esteemed Westside Paso Robles vineyards, 1322 Park Street, Paso Robles, CA 93446 and in 2012. We Will Sell No Wine Before Its Time There is a well know saying from a late 1970’s wine commercial, where Orson Wells states: “We will sell no wine before its time.” This is especially true with Two Moons’ wines. There are currently four wines on the tasting menu, representing the 2012 and 2013 vintages. However, also available are library wines dating back to the original 2010 release. John and winemaker Natalie Darr Brown are committed to release wines when they are properly aged, balanced, and ready to compliment the palate, soul and mind. Experience the Difference-Come for Wine, AND Yoga! Two Moons Cellars is located just north of the entrance to Tin City, so make this your first stop of the day. You will be greeted with smiles and energy, and be able to glide into your wine tasting mood as you sip the selections in the tasting area. But, that’s not all! Later this spring, Two Moons plans to offer “wine and yoga,” using a portion of the winery as a yoga studio! Visit the Two Moons Cellars tasting room to experience the blending of wine, yoga, the balance of life plus the pleasure of wine as they combine to feed the human spirit. CHAMISAL VINEYARDS and MALENE WINES In San Luis Obispo County’s Edna Valley, two neighboring wineries are a must-try within the coolest winegrowing region in California. Chamisal Vineyards After 46 years, Chamisal Vineyards has learned a thing or two about crafting fabulous wines. In 1973, Chamisal was the first vineyard to pioneer and plant winegrapes in the Edna Valley AVA, well before the wine region gained its official designation in 1982. Among Chamisal’s very first blocks were Chardonnay grapes. In addition to Chardonnay, Chamisal grows Pinot Noir and
12
Rhône-style grapes in a terrain of sedimentary and volcanic soil cooled by reliable ocean breezes, keeping everything mild. Sourced from coastal vineyards ranging from Monterey County to San Luis Obispo, Chamisal’s Stainless Chardonnay is a distinctively minimalist wine. Crafted without oak or malolactic fermentation, it allows for aroma and fruit to take centerstage. Chamisal Vineyards’ Monterey Chardonnay is a more full-bodied, fruit-driven wine. Nuances of lemon cream, toasted oak, pineapple Fuji apple and pear give way to mid-palate creaminess, ample texture, and a clean finish. Chamisal’s nine estate wines are sourced from unique locations. Among them is Edna Valley Rosé, made from estate Pinot Noir grapes. Califa Chardonnay, sourced from sparsely yielding vines grown from two blocks at higher elevations, reveals concentrated flavors of delicious peach, pear and honeysuckle and citrus notes laced with vanilla that end in a pleasing balance of acidity and creamy texture. Chemise Chardonnay is sourced from two well-defined blocks on the estate with Tierra sandy loam, a free-draining soil that helps to produce very aromatic wine. Think Granny Smith apples, a touch of citrus and crème brûlee supported by toasted oak, pronounced acidity, a hint of butterscotch and an extended finish. Newcomers to Chamisal will enjoy the Chamisal Flight, a sampling of five current releases of Chamisal Chardonnay and Pinot Noir ($20 per person). Reserved for wine club members only, the Estate Patio Experience, weekdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., features current-release wines overlooking vast vineyard surroundings. The Private Tasting & Tour ($45 per person) begins

in the tasting room, then into the all-terrain limousine golf cart for an informative cruise through the vineyard and sweeping views of the Santa Lucia Mountains. The tour concludes with a cheese platter to complement current-release wines.
Everything’s coming up rosés! A refreshing complement to a wide array of entrees, Malene Wines can be paired with just about anything from olive tapenades, prosciutto, and artichokes, to oysters, grilled fish, pizza. Japanese, Korean, Indian and Baja California cuisine. Be sure not to judge taste by the color. Grape varieties, the regions from which they come and how they’re pressed help determine flavor profiles of each wine. According to wine data consultant, The Nielsen Company, rosé wine sales increased 59 percent from 2017 to 2018, and rosé is the fastest growing wine category in the United States. To get the most out of your Provençal rosé, allow a refrigerated bottle to temper for a few minutes to around 45-50F for maximum enjoyment.
Malene Wines

Not far from Chamisal Vineyards is Malene Wines. Here, Fintan du Fresne creates rosé wines in the Provençal style – brightly fruity, crisp, aromatic and dry with a pleasing mineral texture and acidity. Whole-cluster pressing, long, cool fermentations and sur lies aging for six months with a light hand let the fruit develop largely undisturbed. Malene wines are made from three distinct rosé cuvées, each made from a different blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Vermentino grapes. The wines express their own character and taste, just as the custom-built Airstream trailer serves as Malene’s unique tasting room. It’s just one more way to enjoy a picnic while sipping quality rosés on tap. A trio from which to taste includes the flagship, Malene Rosé. Reminiscent of rosés from the southern France, this is a crisp, dry, complex wine that is crafted in the Provençal-style with Central Coast fruit. Grenache provides honeydew and strawberry aromatics from the glass, aided by Vermentino. Cinsault adds Continued next page
Meet the Winemaker A native of New Zealand, General Manager Fintan du Fresne serves as winemaker at both Chamisal and Malene Wines. Fin’s early adventures include work as a viticulturalist with one of the pioneers of Pinot Noir at Martinborough Vineyards. His avid interest in soil issue and a desire to learn more about winemaking led him to California and Calera Wine Company before heading to Europe. Where he learned about wine between oil rigging in Denmark and Scotland. While working at Adelaida Cellars in Paso Robles, he met his wife-to-be and began setting stakes in California. Fin added consulting projects at various Central Coast wineries before joining Chamisal Vineyards in 2006 and, more recently, Malene Wines, just a half-mile down the road.

Sourced from Santa Barbara County’s Camp 4 Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley, Malene’s Bandol-style Rosé of Mourvèdre is savory, versatile and well-structured. This wine can be aged for up to two years. Created from a single block of 44-year-old vines from Santa Ynez Valley, Malene’s Old Vine Rosé of Grenache wine presents a tropical array of kiwi, papaya and gooseberry with good texture. MICHAEL GILL CELLARS It would be a sin to rush through Adelaida, one of the most picturesque of the 11 subregions in the Paso Robles appellation. Here, the Santa Lucia Mountain Range foothills unfold to reveal a meandering scenic drive where sunlight peeks through natural canopies of lichen-laced oaks along Peachy Canyon Road. “I grew up in Taft, where it was all oil fields, beer and bourbon,” said Michael Gill, owner of Michael Gill Cellars. “But I enjoyed science; it came easy to me.” Michael forsook the idea of working in the oilfield to focus on a pre-dental curriculum at Fresno State University. On a semester break from USC dental school, boredom found the 22-yearold perusing the L.A. Times Food section, where Michael was shocked to discover his dental lab partner, Geoff de Gennaro, featured in an article exploring his hobby of wine and food. Soon after, “we didn’t just have dinner, we dined!” said Michael of annual rotating suppers at friends’ houses. “Back then, Sonoma had seven wineries and Napa only had eight,” he grinned. “That’s where we’d choose our wines for the next meal.”
ART AND SCIENCE CONVERGE Michael graduated and established a successful dental practice in Bakersfield. But his interest in wine also took off. Finally, in 1998, just as Paso Robles winegrape commodities began dominating the area’s crop reports, Michael planted Syrah grapes on his 15-acre parcel nestled among the most sought-after subregions in California. “My neighbor, Robert Nadeau, helped me lay out the field. It was everything I wanted,” said Michael. Nadeau is considered among Paso Robles’ esteemed winemakers. “I sold grapes for seven years before I decided to make wine. I never took an enology class,” Michael admitted, but his approach was anything but haphazard. Michael largely credits Geoff and the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area (IGGPRA), which provides collaborative resources between members throughout the region, but his own instincts are unquestionable. “Small towns are doing a lot of new wines in North America and bringing in new varietals,” Michael said, “which makes it a whole lot of fun.” Michael nurtures ten different grape varieties to create one hundred percent single-varietal estate wines. They include:
16
Viognier, Vermentino, Counoise, Alicante Bouschet, Négrette, Tempranillo, Tannat, Syrah, Zinfandel and Primitivo. His array of Rhône-style whites and reds exude the care and attention of someone who truly enjoys making wine. Similarly, Michael’s numerous gold medals and best of class awards display the spoils of a work ethic well rewarded.
DRY-FARMED FRUIT IS KEY Michael’s grapes are dry-farmed, which eliminates the need for supplemental irrigation in the dry season. Dry-farming requires vineyard tending that will support the health of the vine, depending upon the site. However, Paso’s summer and fall temperatures require that all grapevines struggle deeper into the soil to absorb water. As roots descend, they absorb aspects of minerality that complement dry-farmed yields of relatively smaller berries. Because the majority of a grape’s flavor lies within the skin, the ratio of skin to pulp results in more intensely flavored wine. It’s not all science and seriousness in his Westside tasting room. He loves meeting new visitors and enjoying reunions with his wine club members, and it’s here where he literally savors the fruits of his labors. “Those who come and taste these wines will have a very good experience,” said Michael. “We always have a laugh with one another. You never know where the conversation will take you, but it’s always fun.”

2016 ‘Black Tie’ Viognier is a balanced wine of satisfying peach, dried apricot and pear flavors. Lively, fruity, yet pleasingly dry. 2016 Vermentino delights the mouth with an intriguing journey of aromas and flavors, from lemon and praline, to apple, vanilla cream, spice and restrained oak on the finish. 2016 Counoise could be called “summer in a glass.” Aromas of raspberry, fig and a bit of nectarine greet the nose with a bright welcome of cherry and refreshing acidity. Equally perfect for Thanksgiving dinners. (Only 95 cases were produced, so hurry!) 2016 ‘Black Tie’ Alicante Bouschet “is kind of a wild horse,” says Michael Gill. “It’s phenomenal.” This hybridized Grenache and Petit Bouschet grape is lively and layered with wild berries, warm toast, and hints of chocolate-covered raisins.

2013 ‘Black Tie’ Syrah is Michael Gill’s flagship. An International Wine Competition Gold Medal showstopper, this unfiltered wine was made from a vineyard that yielded two bottles for every three vines. Boysenberry, RC cola, tastes of black pepper, cardamom and vanilla enchant the tongue and envelope the palate. (The 2015 ‘Black Tie’ Syrah is equally amazing.)

Hearst Castle® Announces Spring 2019 Evening Tours Hearst Castle’s evening tours have just begun a new season. Visitors to the Castle can now experience the magnificent site illuminated at night. The evening tours feature the Living History Program, which evokes the heyday of this great estate. Docents in elegant attire from the 1930s recreate a sense of the social life of William Randolph Hearst’s guests, as they socialize in the Assembly Room or other areas of the Castle. Other docents portray household staff attending to the needs of Mr. Hearst’s guests. The evening tour progresses from Casa del Mar (one of the guest houses) to the main rooms and kitchen of Casa Grande, the main house. The tour continues upstairs through the Main Library and Mr. Hearst’s private Gothic Suite. Completing this magical 100-minute tour with a visit to the breathtaking indoor Roman Pool with its blue and gold mosaics, visitors to Hearst Castle will leave with long-lasting memories of bygone nights at “The Enchanted Hill.” Spring evening tours are conducted on most Friday and Saturday nights, through May 18 and mid-week nights during spring break from April 15 through April 25, 2019. Visitors should arrive 15 minutes before their tour time and allow two hours and ten minutes for this tour. Evening Tour prices are $36 for adults and $18 for youth aged 5 through 12. Advance reservations can be made online through reservecalifornia.com or by calling 1-800-444-4445. Photos ©Hearst Castle/California State Parks

here, on the banks of San Luis Creek, and named it Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today, many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions.
t’s no wonder the people here call it SLO. No one is in any hurry in the cafes or on the sidewalks, and certainly no one is in any rush to leave. Strangers are genuinely friendly, always ready to talk about their favorite hiking trail or barbecue joint, or to point the way to the winery with the best Pinot Noir. It’s all part of the SLO life, that combination of good stuff that makes visiting here so nourishing to the soul.

New California Art Destination Launches With World-Famed Light Installation Sensorio, an immersive new destination located in Paso Robles, California, announces the opening of its first phase in May 2019 with an illuminated art installation by internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro. The British-based artist will create his largest site-specific project to date, with the enormous multiacre walk-through artwork, Bruce Munro: Field of Light at Sensorio. Field of Light is a sculptural composition that covers Sensorio’s rolling hills with an array of over 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber-optics, gently illuminating the landscape in subtle blooms of morphing color. Powered by solar, the stunning exhibition is expected to captivate visitors, inviting them to engage with the countryside through an ethereal light-based, sculptural experience. Smithsonian Magazine has called Munro’s work “stunning,” while The Guardian noted, “This is art you feel, rather than art you view.” Theoretical physicist/Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek noted, “I had the uncanny sense that I was walking through my own mind, or at least a good model of it. I’ll never again think about brains, or myself, in quite the same way.” Munro created an international sensation with a stunning Field of Light installation in Uluru, Northern Territories, Australia in 2016 that was met with instant acclaim. Involving 326 miles of optic fiber, Field of Light in Uluru has been seen by over 200,000 guests in one of the world’s most remote locations, and will remain on display through December 2020. The journey to that exhibition started in 1992, when Munro and his fiancée (now wife) took a camping tour of Australia’s red desert center. Struck by the thought that deserts seem infertile, until it rained and the flowers bloomed, Munro dreamt of a field of lights that, like dormant seeds in a dry desert, would quietly wait until darkness to bloom with gentle rhythms of light. The first iteration of Field of Light was not created until 12 years later, in 2004, in Munro’s own home field in Wiltshire, UK. Since then, he has been invited to temporarily recreate Field of Light in many forms: along water and through forests, in urban squares, on building roofs, and over rocky buttes. Sensorio’s breathtaking exhibit will be larger in size than any other Munro exhibition internationally, and will be Munro’s first US exhibit entirely powered by solar. For Sensorio, Munro
Wine Country This Month: Central Coast
will create an even larger field, offering visitors an unparalleled experience of immersing themselves in a breathtaking otherworld. Other amenities include refreshments and a special terrace option offering viewing while dining. Munro’s oeuvre aims to transcend time and space by inspiring moments of awareness, inviting viewers to contemplate a world larger and more mysterious than their own existence. Munro’s recent West Coast premiere at Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California, was described as “Spectacular” by the San Francisco Chronicle, and “Wondrous,” by San Francisco Magazine. KQED (PBS) declared the exhibit “Magical. His dream becomes your dream,” and The Mercury News added it “lives up to the hype. We never left Saratoga, yet entered into another dimension, exploring brilliant realms.” London-born Bruce Munro is best known for large-scale lightbased artworks inspired largely by his continuous study of natural light and his curiosity for shared human experiences. With a fine arts degree, early career training in the lighting design industry and an inventive urge for reuse, his art captures his responses to literature, music, science, and the world around him. His work has been commissioned by and displayed in special exhibitions in galleries, parks, grand estates, cathedrals, botanical gardens, and museums across the globe. Sensorio, the intersection of art, technology, and nature, has been designed as a destination for entertainment, exploration, meditation, adventure, and delight. Sensorio will honor the natural topography of the landscape and offer a wide range of amusing, mystical, and kinetic experiences. The Central California destination launches with the interactive light installation by Bruce Munro, as other exhibits and buildings are put into place for an expected opening in 2021. Future developments at Sensorio will include a hotel and conference center. Bruce Munro: Field of Light at Sensorio will open to the public May 19 through January 5, 2020 at Sensorio, 4380 Highway 46 East, Paso Robles. For more information and for tickets, visit SensorioPaso.com or call (805) 226-4287.

Reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting, Los Olivos is a step back in time, with its flagpole in the city center, to the vintage store fronts that beckon you to have a seat and enjoy the scenery. Dating back to 1860, when it was a stop on the western stagecoach route, the town is full of history from its Victorian homes to the many locals with pioneer ancestors. Now a hub for visitors to the county, Los Olivos has a variety of local restaurants, which complement the wine country experience, with their acclaimed wine lists paired with seasonal menus. Encompassing just five blocks, the downtown is very pedestrian friendly, filled with wine tasting rooms intermingled with craft brew tasting, art galleries and boutiques filled with home décor, gifts and apparel. Pack a picnic and head out for the day to the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail! Start your journey at Zaca Station Road, just off of Highway 101 as you head toward Los Alamos on Highway 154. With close to a dozen wineries on the trail, you can leisurely meander throughout the country roads as they wind through an idyllic setting of vineyards, pastures and farm animals. You’ve definitely come to the right place to indulge in the perfect afternoon of PASS wine tasting! SAN MAR COS RD 154 NOJOQ UI AVE

Dragonette Cellars – Exclusive, Distinctive, Small-Lot Wines It has been said that a strand of three cords is not easily broken, and so it is with brothers John and Steve Dragonette and good friend Brandon Sparks-Gillis. In 2005, the trio left a successful Los Angeles wine shop to set their sights for Santa Barbara County’s little community of Los Olivos, where Dragonette Cellars was born. Here, the trio offers regular and reserve tastings of exclusive, distinctive, and small-lot Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah wines. “We’re family-owned and operated, and we do everything ourselves. Our goal is to produce the highest quality wines, and we accomplish this through meticulous winemaking and vineyard work,” said John. “Our visitors will always be met by a friendly and very knowledgeable staff,” John continued. “We pride ourselves on holding weekly staff trainings to educate them, and that’s important to us. In this way, our guests can discover how soil and climate influence the characteristics of wine.” In fact, 90 percent of their wines are sold directly to consumers and their wine club is 2,300-strong, and Dragonette’s wines age well, from 15 to 20 years.
Great Wines from Great Vineyards Over the years, Dragonette has refined its vineyard sources from among the best in Santa Barbara County, where sustainability and organic and biodynamic practices are rooted in their vernacular as deeply as the vines. “There have been a lot of trends in the wine business, but we’re not trend-driven,” said John. “We like super clean fruit and classic winemaking. Our focus is really on the vineyard, gently shepherding it to make elegant wines with fruit, acidity, and structure all in balance. “The Sta. Rita Hills vineyards are the coolest vineyards in county, where low-yielding, tiny clusters of concentrated flavors grow,” John explained. “Naturally-occurring diatomaceous soil, or fossilized remains of singled-celled aquatic algae, is a welcome feature in the Sta. Rita Hills subregion. It not only helps soil retain moisture and nutrients and helps produce heartier grapevines but lends structure and minerality to the wine.” Bordered to the north by the communities of Lompoc and Buellton, the chalky and volcanic slopes of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA are positioned east-west between the northern Purisima Hills and more southern Santa Rosa Hills. This corridor relies on afternoon breezes that makes it for a prime spot for growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other varieties that thrive in cooler weather. >> MELISSA CHAVEZ

and varietals from the region’s wineries — more than 100 in all — and a freshening of the region’s cuisine that is steeped in a farm-to-table movement that has long fueled the region’s creative culinary scene. Also known as the wine country of Santa Barbara County, the Santa Ynez Valley in many ways makes for an ideal spring getaway. The mild coastal climate that nourishes the Santa Ynez Valley’s world-class vineyards and wines typically brings blue skies and temperatures that push into the 70s. The weather is perfect for those emerging from from winter’s chill … ideal for a morning hike through blooming wildflowers and peaking with soaring views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s a time to take in the lush greenery surrounding Cachuma Lake, a horseback ride through rolling terrain, a cycling adventure along idyllic country roads or a quiet picnic in a vineyard while savoring the latest vintage. “Spring has always been one of the best times of the year to visit the Santa Ynez Valley,” said Shelby Sim, CEO of Visit the Santa Ynez Valley. “The area is so beautiful as the hills turn emerald green, but more than that, it is a time when everything is possible. The weather is incredible, the wineries are putting forth their newest creations, the food is fresh, and the weather is so inviting for those who yearn to get outdoors.”

A vacation in the Santa Barbara wine country often involves a stay at a luxurious hotel or bed and breakfast with gourmet food and wine, but ForFriends Inn offers clients this type of experience and much more. Not only do visitors have a chance to stay in one of the bed and breakfast’s sumptuous rooms, decorated in wine country and western motifs, an opportunity to sample some of the finest wines the area has to offer, and enjoy a threecourse breakfast, the owners do everything they can to make sure you feel at home. Dave and Katie Pollock named their establishment, ForFriends Inn, with the idea that people would visit their bed and breakfast as guests, but leave as friends. Wine meets west at ForFriends Inn with four rooms staged in western decor and four others in more traditional styling. Rooms also feature balconies, fireplaces, hearth stoves, jacuzzi tubs or walk-in showers. One of the ways ForFriends Inn makes their guests feel special is the owners’ attention to detail. They have thought of all the ways to make a visit to wine country memorable. Each stay includes homemade three-course breakfasts and a chance to taste first run wines at the daily wine and hors d’oeuvres hour along with cookies and cordials before bed. While wine and cookies might be enough of an inducement for many people, a look at the breakfast food available might make you book reservations immediately. A picture and recipe for the inn’s homemade rosemary popovers recently posted on the inn’s blog look delectable. ForFriends Inn is located at 1121 Edison Street in Santa Ynez. For information or to book a room, go to www.forfriendsinn.com, or call (805) 693-0303. You can also find ForFriends Inn on Instagram and Facebook. 101

Ventura County Sun, Sand, History and Wine Fun! Magnavino Cellars, is a mile down the road from Herzog. Entering, you will feel transported into a delightful Italian wine country getaway. Robert and Barbara Wagner have created a haven to come, sit, sip and relax with old and new friends alike, while sampling their assortment of hand crafted award winning wines. On Friday evenings (between 5:00-8:00pm) you can accompany your tasting with a gourmet cheese platter or small bites as you “time travel” to this Italian retreat, even if just for a few hours. Less than 10 minutes from Magnavino, you’ll arrive at Four Brix Winery in Ventura. Step into this fun, funky tasting roomwinery to savor wines made from grapes that are an homage to four great grape regions: Italy, France, Spain and California. Offering a “tapas menu” to accompany your wine tasting, Four Brix is a special “community.” Live concerts and special events are a constant at Four Brix---the fun never stops here. A few blocks from Four Brix is Panaro Brothers Winery. Being fifth generation Italian-American winemakers, the four Panaro Brothers offer a wide selection of mostly single-varietal wines, grapes sourced from vineyards stretching from Monterey
“Ventura Highway in the sunshine, where the days are longer, the nights are stronger than the moonshine, you’re gonna go I know.”* What better reason to go than to spend a rambling day (or two) along the Ventura 101 Freeway (or King’s Highway), from Camarillo to the seaside town of Ventura, (named after Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782), sipping wines, enjoying the sunshine and drive as you meet winemakers in their welcoming, friendly tasting rooms.
So Many Tasting Rooms—Not Enough Time (nut plenty of wine) With more than 20 tasting rooms to choose from, the Camarillo-Ventura corridor is less than a two-hour drive from central Orange County, and an hour or less from greater Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Enjoy the fruitful bounty of what Ventura County has to offer – you won’t be disappointed.
Five on Your Drive Travelling north on the 101 toward Ventura, you may want to make your first stop at Herzog Wine Cellars, in Oxnard. Though a well-known larger winery, Herzog (producing Kosher wines), has a fascinating history, and includes in their line-up smaller lot, limited edition and premium wines. Take the selfguided tour which is educational and fascinating.
