Frank DiSalvo with his Italian background and upbringing. His musical abilities date back to his childhood and he has spent his life performing for thousands.

ates a warm and happy feeling.

His time in the music industry has been primarily spent performing in Southern California.

John Stanley King, having been born and raised in the valley has his musical foundation dating back several generations. His grandparents, parents, brothers, and sisters have all been playing and singing over the years.

He has always amazed with his depth of musical knowledge.

He started at the age of eighteen with the Fred Waring orchestra.

Michael Holmes is one of a kind. His ability to sing, dance and imitate is by far and away the best anywhere in the valley. His philanthropic pursuits should also be mentioned, as he gives so much to the valley in so many ways.

For the first time these performers will be appearing on the same stage at the same time. Come en-

Filing Your Taxes on a Cellphone

A recent newspaper story told of two senior women who were coaxed into an experiment e-filing their taxes on their cellphone and tablet.

E-filing apparently is becoming more and more popular, as 126 million people e-filed for the past tax year, and 85 million of those received faster direct deposit refunds because of it.

Would I do this, e-file on a handheld electronic device? No, I would not.

In all honesty, I did e-file once years ago, sending my information directly to the Internal Revenue Service with the push of a computer keyboard button. It was the only time in all these years that something went wrong, and the IRS didn’t receive all the numbers. Some months later I received mail from them saying I owed additional taxes.

Once I ran the numbers again and called them on the phone, it was clear that one entry never

made it across the wires. After I sent the paper version of the tax return, all was well, but it caused grief and took time to sort out.

Now I only send paper versions done on a computer where I’m more certain of the security software, hardwired to the wall.

The specific reasons I won’t use a handheld electronic device to file my taxes are these: 1) Handheld devices usually don’t have adequate security software installed on them, and if installed, it’s not familiar to the user. 2) If the device is hooked up via a home WiFi, the router connection might not be encrypted. If you don’t know the difference between WEP and WPA/WPA2, ask someone for help with your router to make sure you’re not on WEP, which can be cracked by someone walking by outside.

Thrift Store Purchase Came with a Warning The donations manager at a North Carolina thrift store was warned by the donor that the furniture in question was haunted, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC].

According to the store’ Operations Director, Elizabeth Brady, “he was told ‘you don’t want those, they’re haunted.’ And he said ‘well, now I definitely want them’.” The buyer, Ricky Scott, gladly paid $1,000 for the hand carved haunted bedroom suite saying, “maybe it will be a nice ghost.”

The Marble Mountains are a rather small mountain range located in one of the harshest, driest parts of the Mojave Desert, in southeastern California near the tiny towns of Chambless and Cadiz.

What makes the Marble Mountains especially attractive to paleontologists is the comparatively rich Cambrian fossil biota which can be found in a particular rock layer, the Latham Shale that is well-exposed in the southern part of the range, as well as in some nearby ranges such as the Bristol Mountains. The Latham Shale and the rock layers below and above it comprise a well-studied section of Lower and Middle

Cambrian strata, which extends, with some variation, over a large part of the southern Mojave Desert. The dominant fossils in the Latham Shale are trilobites.

Trilobites form one of the earliest known groups of arthropods.

Wait three minutes, and then add the rest of the hot water.

Desert Theatreworks Presents ‘Love, Sex and the I.R.S’ Back by audience demand! The hilarious comedy returns to DTW! In the 1970s, love seemed easier, sex more daring, and tax fraud less common and less troubling.

Love, Sex, and the IRS centers on Jon and Leslie, two heterosexual men who have been roommates for years. In an attempt to save money, Jon has filed income tax returns listing the pair as married.

But the plan quickly goes awry when the IRS comes to investigate. Now, Leslie must pretend to be Jon’s wife, Jon’s mother comes to meet her son’s fiancée and the landlord doesn’t approve of unwed couples under the same roof. Don’t miss this blast from the past set to the music and situation comedy style of the 1970’s.

Love, Sex and the I.R.S. opened at the Dam Site Dinner-Theater, Tinton Falls, NJ, on June 1, 1979 under the direction of Billy Van Zandt along with co-author, Jane Milmore. Billy Van Zandt has starred in a series of his own plays (If you’ve never seen this clown at work, you should be ashamed of yourself), and has made his feature film debut in Jaws 2. The

success of his comedies (written with partner Jane Milmore) brought him to the attention of Bob Newhart, who hired him as a writer for the acclaimed Newhart television series. His biggest career thrill was acting alongside his idol Lucille Ball on her final television series.

His creative partner, Jane Milmore, began her career as an actress on shows such as Anything But Love, Sydney, and guest starring on Martin, the Hughley’s, and the Wayans Bros. Jane began her writing collaboration with Billy with Love, Sex, and the I.R.S. and then created and developed television series for great actors such as Brooke Shields, Martin Lawrence, Don Rickles, Richard Lewis, Jamie Lee Curtis, and many more.

Billy and Jane were nominated for an Emmy for writing and producing a television special where they unveiled the original pilot episode of I Love Lucy. They won both People’s Choice and NAACP Image Awards for their work on the Martin Lawrence comedy Martin and a Prism Multi-Cultural Award for TV’s The Hughleys.

Rated PG-13 - for mild language and sexual humor.

Social Security Matters No Special “extra dollars” for Veteran’s Monthly Benefit Dear Rusty: I am within a few weeks of applying for SS. My 70th Birthday is in April and I have stayed in my job for the maximum benefit from SS. I am also a veteran and so am taking my DD-214 with me to apply for the $300.00 or so extra dollars that is offered per month.

Are there any other extra items I need to apply for? I keep hearing about a $16,000 benefit that I should apply for from SS but of course they never actually give you the specifics. Signed: Veteran Applying for SS Dear Veteran: Please accept my gratitude for your service to our country, and congratulations for choosing a great strategy by waiting until you are 70 to get the maximum Social Security benefit available to you. However, I’m afraid I must clarify something regarding that “$300 or so extra dollars that is offered per month.” What you’re referring to is called “special extra earnings” for military service, but that provision doesn’t provide you with $300 in additional monthly SS benefits because of your military service. Rather it is a provision, which adds dollars to your recorded military earnings, with the amount added dependent upon the years during which you served.

Those who served between 1957 and 1977 get $300 added to their military earnings record for each quarter of active duty service. For example, if their actual military earnings for a given year of active duty were $2,700, their military earnings for that year for Social Security purposes will be shown as $3,900 ($300 per quarter times 4 quarters = $1200 additional earnings for that service year). Those who served between 1978 and 2001 would also receive an addition to their military earnings record, but it would be computed somewhat differently – they receive an additional $100 in earnings for every $300 in active duty military pay, up to a maximum of $1,200 additional for each service year.

But these credits are not added to your monthly Social Security benefit payment; they are additions to your military earnings record, which may influence the amount of your Social Security benefit if your military service years are among the 35 years used to compute your SS benefit amount. Put simply, your earnings records for each year of active military service are increased by up to $1200 per year for each year of active duty so that when your SS benefit is computed the higher earnings may increase

your benefit amount. You can read all about this at the following link to Social Security’s rules on this topic: ssa.gov/planners/ retire/military.html. As you will see in this document, if you served between 1968 and 2001 you do not need to do anything to receive these additions to your military pay record; the special extra earnings have already been credited to your military pay records. And no “special extra earnings” are credited for military service after 2001.

As for your question about “any other extra items” you need to apply for, there really aren’t any for you. By claiming your SS benefit to start in the month you attain 70 years of age you will be getting a benefit which is 32% more than you would have received at your full retirement age of 66, and that is the maximum you can receive.

Regarding what you hear about “a $16,000 benefit” you should apply for; those advertisements are marketing hype designed to get you to buy something or enroll in some program. If you keep digging (as I have) you will find that they’ll finally suggest that you may be able get that much more if you delay claiming benefits until you are 70 years old, which, of course, you have already done. Please keep this adage in mind – “if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.”

And once more, thank you for your military service and congratulations for choosing a Social Security strategy that yields you the highest possible Social Security benefit available.

Walk of the Stars Palm Springs to Honor Carole Cook Walk of the Stars Palm Springs will honor singer and actress Carole Cook with the 430th star on the Walk of the Stars Palm Springs. The star will be unveiled on Monday, April 1, at 2 p.m. in front of the historic Palm Springs Plaza Theatre located at 128 S. Palm Canyon Drive. The star dedication ceremony is open to the public.

“I first visited Palm Springs in the late 50’s with Lucille Ball. Several years later I did my second film with Warner Bros, “Palm Springs Weekend,” and my love affair with the city continued.

Countless charity performances and several engagements at The Purple Room, Palm Springs has become a home away from home.

I’m thrilled and honored to have a star. I welcome everyone to walk all over me!” said Carole Cook.

Starring as Dolly Levi in the musical, “Hello Dolly!” in 1965-66, Carole Cook was the second actress to play the lead role after the late Carol Channing. Cook’s career on stage includes a list of hit performances including “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Follies,” “Mame” and “42nd Street.” Carole will be

gracing the stage at The Purple Room, March 29-30.

Carole Cook’s television and film career is equally impressive. Cook began appearing on television in the ‘50s.

Her guest starring credits including “The Bob Newhart Show,” “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy,” “Maude,” “Starsky & Hutch,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “Laverne & Shirley,” “Magnum P.I.,” “Dynasty,” “Murder She Wrote,” and in 2005 she played Sophie Larson in the ABC series “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Cook’s prolific career as an entertainer reaches the silver screen as well. Film classics such as “Palm Springs Weekend,” “The Incredible Mr. Limpet,” “American Gigolo,” “Sixteen Candles,” the Disney animated film “Home on the Range,” and the recent “A Very Sordid Wedding,” written and directed by Del Shores.

Shores will speak during the Walk of the Stars dedication along with Cook’s star sponsors Andy Smith and Paul von Wupperfeld, actor Mason McCulley, Palm Springs Chamber CEO Nona Watson, and Mayor Robert Moon.

“Aquaman” (PG-13) -- Jason Momoa helms the fourth highest-grossing solo superhero film to date, the origin story of Arthur Curry, the half-breed son of the queen of Atlantis and a lighthouse keeper. Raised as a warrior by an Atlantean mentor (Willem Dafoe) but rejecting his tidal roots, Arthur comes to terms with his legacy by battling alongside warrior and fellow underwater royal Mera (Amber Heard) for the soul of the ocean while fending off a sworn enemy -- and, of course, getting the girl. It follows in the less-serious, more spirited fun of, say, “Wonder Woman” or “Thor” with a killer cast and CGI segments that keep underwater scenes exciting and alive. Plus, Jason Momoa.

“If Beale Street Could Talk” (R) -- Based on James Baldwin’s 1974 novel, a young couple -- Tish (Kiki Layne) and Fonny (Stephan James) -- face racism and adversity while maintaining faith in their unshakeable love. Fonny is wrongly jailed for a terrible crime, just as Tish finds out she is pregnant with their child. Regina King’s performance as Tish’s mother is outstanding -- indeed Oscar-worthy, as she took home the statue for best supporting actress -- with loving direction from Barry Jenkins and a beautiful score.

“Stan and Ollie” (PG) -- Recounting the sunset days of one of the greatest duo acts to grace a stage, Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly play Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. A string of Hollywood Golden Age hits in the rearview, the pair embark on a tour of Britain in 1953 to revive interest in a new film. Hardy’s health is failing, while Laurel is wistfully grasping at a last chance for success. But the show must go on, and it does. I wasn’t sure at first about slapstick comedy routines by a dolled-up Coogan and a fat-suited-up Reilly, but it’s so good. They really give it everything they have, and on behalf of a whole generation that might have missed out on this brand of comedy, I thank the cast and crew for delivering.

HONEY-GINGER GLAZED TURNIPS Turnips can be peeled before cooking, eaten raw, sliced, made into a relish or a slaw, diced or julienned, or shredded to make croquettes. Turnips also can be used as a substitute for potatoes in many of your favorite recipes.

In today’s recipe, I’ve given turnips an Asian flair by glazing them with soy sauce, honey and ginger. When you’re looking for an exciting new side dish, try turnips.

Turnips are delicate, so cook them until they are still firm, but tender when pierced in the center with a knife. Overcooking will cause the sweetness of the turnip to diminish.

• 2 pounds turnips • 2 tablespoons butter • 1/4 cup honey • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger • 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce

1. Wash and peel turnips and cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices, then halve or quarter the slices.

In a pot of boiling, salted water, cook the turnips for 8 minutes or just until tender. Drain the turnips and stir in butter. Cook over high heat, shaking pan often, for 1 minute or until the turnips are coated with the butter.

2. Stir in honey, ginger, soy sauce and pepper to taste; cook, stirring often, for 1 minute or until glazed. Serve immediately.

Serves 4.
