A show of hands, please: How many of us are doing nothing we’d planned to do once we quit working? How many of us are, more accurately, doing nothing at all?

I thought it was just me, jettisoning carefully laid plans for how I’d spend my time and opting to do ... not much. I’m not the only one among my friends.

Those who are ahead of me claim they did the same thing for one year. That length of time seems to be the common theme, spending a year chilling out, avoiding responsibility if it involves making plans and in general hiding from those who want to rope us into doing ... anything. The suspected reason: We did too much during our working years.

At the end of the year, I’m told, it’s like coming up for air, looking around at the world and deciding to join it again.

Experts say this happens frequently, that once we retire we don’t know how to make new friends, and so on. I think they’re wrong. It’s not that we don’t know how to do those things, we just don’t want to. When it comes to volunteering, they say that the “menial” type of volunteer work available doesn’t appeal to us. But then neither does the “mentoring” they say should be the answer to it all because it would use our skills.

Once I identified this “I’m not going to do anything” mentality in myself, I decided to counter all the TV watching with a personal strategy designed to at least get me out of the house. On a big calendar I’ve made entries for things like visiting the library once a week or checking out a class at the senior college.

And when the time comes I don’t actually have to do those things. I can say no. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Health Lecture: How to Survive a Snake Bite With Gael Whetstone and Justin Carmichael Learn important life-saving measures to take. Presented by Gael Whetstone, BSN, RN and Justin Carmichael of The Living Desert.

The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. in The Learning Center (TLC) on Wednesday, March 20. This program is presented in partnership with Eisenhower Health and The Living Desert.

Gael Whetstone is the Coordinator for Trauma Injury Prevention for Desert Regional Medical Center. Gael is a seasoned RN with over 28 years of experience specializing in critical care, trauma, emergency medicine, disaster management and sexual assault.

Gael served as charge nurse of this very busy 10 bed trauma resuscitation unit and helped draft numerous research projects including spiritual support of the trauma patient, permissive hypotension, brief intervention for the impaired driver and recall of events after intubation.

Justin Carmichael is currently the Volunteer Program Manager for The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. His first experience working

at a zoo was as a volunteer for the Cincinnati Zoo 22 years ago. During this time, Justin was inspired by a Reptile Keeper he interned with. His influence led Justin to the Santa Fe Teaching Zoo in Gainesville, Florida to pursue a degree and ultimately a career in zoos. From there he worked in interpretive positions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the Florida Park Service as a Naturalist Ranger.

Desert Institute Presents Flora of Joshua Tree National Park Discover the abundant uses of native desert plants during this one-day field class. Daniel McCarthy, edible plants expert, will teach participants about the plants historically harvested by the native people of Southern California for food, medicine, and utilitarian purposes. The program will start in the classroom with an overview of local Native American tribes and how culture defines plant use or the other way around. Attendees will also learn about plant communities, habitat, and distribution, focusing on the ethno-botany of key species found in the Mojave and Colorado Deserts. In the afternoon, the class will follow the trails for a hike to identify edible plants found in the Preserve area. No

plants will be harvested in the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. Respectful gathering practices will be discussed as well as restrictions collecting on federal lands and in the National Park.

The program is held on Sunday, March 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” (PG-13) -- In a follow-up to 2016’s delightful delve into the Potterverse, the notorious wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johhny Depp) escapes capture to continue building an empire of pure-blood followers, and magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is enlisted by a young professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) to help in his recapture. Scamander’s path leads through major players in his past (Zoe Kravitz as Leticia Lestrange) and present (the American gang from the original). It also journeys through another magical country; this time France. Although the characters are familiar, the storyline is overburdened with side stories.

“Green Book” (PG-13) -- This year’s Oscar-winning best picture arrives on video this week.

Mahershala Ali is Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class classical and jazz pianist who is black. Viggo Mortensen is Tony Lip, a streettough Italian-American bruiser and bouncer from the Bronx.

When Shirley embarks on a concert tour that will take him through the Deep South, he hires Lip as a driver and bodyguard. The two navigate the complex black travel experience with the help of the “Green Book,” while their personal interactions -- each learning from and perhaps influencing the other -- as well as their experiences on the road facing both racism and decency will move you. Recipe of the Week

IRISH POTATO CASSEROLE • 1 1/2 pounds (4 to 5 medium) Irish potatoes, peeled and diced • 2 teaspoons salt • 4 tablespoons butter, plus 1 teaspoon for greasing casserole dish • 1/4 cup dried bread crumbs • 2 tablespoons flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg • 2 cups milk • 2 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and sliced • 1/2 small onion, finely diced 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Place potatoes in a large saucepan and cover them with cold water. Add a teaspoon of salt and bring potatoes to a boil. Reduce heat to low. Cook for 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender when a fork is inserted in the center. Carefully drain off water and set potatoes aside.

2. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Place bread crumbs in a small bowl. Add two tablespoons of the melted butter to the bread crumbs; mix well and set aside.

Reserve the rest of the butter in the saucepan.

3. Stir in flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon pepper and the nutmeg into the butter in the saucepan. Cook until mixture starts to bubble around the edges, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add milk, a little at a time, stirring well after each addition. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 2 to 3 minutes.

4. Use the remaining teaspoon of butter to grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish. Combine potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, onion and remaining salt and pepper in the casserole dish. Add sauce and gently mix the ingredients together until well-combined.

5. Sprinkle buttered bread crumbs over the casserole. Bake for 30 minutes or until bubbly around the edges and the bread crumbs are brown. Serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.

• Lightning isn’t solely a phenomenon of Earth: Astronomers have noted lightning bolts on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Venus.

• Athletes playing baseball on steroids have been in the news in recent years, but drugs are nothing new in America’s national sport.

During the late 1960s and ‘70s, Dock Ellis was a valued pitcher who played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates.

On June 12, 1970, Ellis took LSD, thinking it was an off day for his team. By the time he realized that the Pirates were scheduled to play the San Diego Padres that evening, it was too late. The drug

proved to have no ill effect on Ellis; in fact, he pitched a no-hitter.

When he recounted the event to a reporter 12 years later, he said he remembered only bits and pieces of the game, though he felt euphoric. Many years later, after being treated for addiction, Ellis became a coordinator for an antidrug program in California.

• A newspaper reporter once asked Gen. Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French Forces during World War II and later president of the French Fifth Republic, if he was happy. De Gaulle replied, “What do you take me for, an idiot?”

1962: JFK Makes His First Visit to the Valley On December 9, President John F. Kennedy came to town on the first of several trips. The President’s visit occurred less than two months after the Cuban Missile Crisis, during which the US and the USSR perched for nearly a week on the precipice of nuclear war. The Soviets backed down and removed their missiles from Cuba (and the US privately agreed to remove its own missiles from Turkey), and the world survived.

Kennedy’s leadership in a time of crisis was widely praised, and he was greeted in Palm Springs as a conquering hero.
