After a year of teaching junior high band, Rob relocated to Los Angeles to accept a full time position with the Entertainment Division of the Walt Disney Company. Experts at the Western Australia Museum authenticated the bottle, which contained a message. It seems that the German navy at the time was researching ocean currents and

an armada of sailing vessels jettisoned thousands of similar bottles into the seas around the world.

Each contained a note asking anyone who found the message in a bottle to report the location and date of the find as a means of mapping the currents.

Romance can be lovely ... except when it isn’t. Disaster can be part of the package if the new “perfect match” is a scammer. There are far too many ways for thieves to con seniors.

Online Dating Sites -- You can’t really know who’s on the other end of the ads you view, but there are some warning signs that a potential date might not be honest.

He or she might profess love all too quickly, or send photos that don’t look real. You might be encouraged to delete your profile and instead exchange direct email. Maybe you’ll be told you can’t meet yet because the other person is out of the country, and there are excuses about why you can’t talk on the phone. Eventually there will be an “emergency,” and you’ll be asked to help by sending money ... and then more money.

Drug Mules -- Many seniors have been conned into sneaking drugs

into other countries. A new love will ask a senior to travel overseas, even making the arrangements. Unfortunately, those arrangements include taking along an extra piece of luggage. It could contain anything, but it’s often drugs. If the senior gets caught, claiming innocence doesn’t help when stuck in a foreign jail.

Financial Assets -- Co-mingling of assets or accounts in another red flag. Don’t do it, especially if intend to leave money to your heirs. The more assets you have, the more you’re at-risk of having your money stolen. Be careful how much financial information you give out about yourself.

Setting up a senior to be scammed doesn’t have to happen overnight. Sometimes the scheme can play out for months while trust is built and information disclosed.

The Living Desert to Host Conservation-Focused Speaker Series The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is hosting an enlightening speaker series focusing on its conservation efforts. Night Sky Photography in Twentynine Palms Dennis Mammana will teach participants how to use even the simplest of cameras to create magnificent celestial portraits.

The class will begin with tips for setting up and shooting the night sky including a few tricks of the trade. Students should have a good working knowledge of their equipment prior to taking this class. Students need to provide their own camera, tri-

Sunnylands’ Music in the Gardens Concert Series Gets You in the Groove on Sundays in March Break out the lawn chairs and picnic baskets. Sunnylands’ annual Music in the Gardens concert series returns in March with a different musical act performing on the Great Lawn every Sunday.

There are five Sundays in the month this year, meaning five bands will perform free of charge from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sunnylands. Guests are welcome to stroll the gardens as the music plays. Visitors may also bring lawn chairs, blankets, and food and drink, but large coolers, ice chests, grills, and alcohol are not permitted. Smoking and pets are not allowed.

This year, concert attendees will be sharing the Great Lawn with a Desert X art installation, Surrogates, a film about things to be used, in order of appearance, by self or others, for touching upon larger, insidious, or different thing. The piece by Iman Issa, an Egyptian-born artist, will remain on the Great Lawn until April 21.

Performing this year are: March 3 – The Louie Bluies.

Formed three years ago, the Louie Bluies offer an eclectic mix of ragtime, jazz, country, and blues.

March 10 – Barry Baughn Blues Band. A fixture on the SoCal blues circuit.

March 17 – Celtic Quake. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Celtic instruments and pub sing-alongs.

March 24 – Soul Surrender. Singer Tricia Pilkington fronts this soul and rhythm-and-blues act.

Fasten Your Seat Belts Some people will do just about anything to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records. Take the 103 or more Brits who plan to break the record for the most nudist riders on a roller coaster, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. The event will take place at a theme park in Blackpool, England. It is being sponsored by the

British Naturalism organization, which has put out a call for naked volunteers for the occasion promising a fun-filled afternoon including three hours of skinny dipping at a nearby water park.

Desert Institute Presents Flora of Joshua Tree National Park Students in this informal but purposeful class will have the opportunity to observe many of the flowering plants in Joshua Tree National Park, learn their names and something about their different places in the park’s greater plant community. In addition, students will gain familiarity with the tools necessary to identify plants on their own.

Friday’s class will include a basic botany lecture, with emphasis on desert plants wherever possible and as appropriate. This will be followed by an introduction to basic field guides, and the use of plant keys in identification. A lab

session will give students the opportunity to examine plant. Saturday and Sunday are field days and will be spent in the park. With instructor assistance, students, in pairs or small groups, will practice identifying flowering plants.

Walking distances for this class are minimal. This class earns 1.5 units through U.C. Riverside, Extension.

Desert Institute Presents Wildflower Wanderings Saturate your senses with the beauty of a wildflower bloom in Joshua Tree National Park. Darrell Shade, botanist and naturalist, will lead this all-day field class on a tour through the colorful flowers of a desert spring. Darrell will entertain participants with descriptions of the flora, their botanical characteristics, and show how to identify the unique blossoms of the park. The audience will be delighted by Darrell’s personal accounts of the wonders of nature in this ordinarily dry and dusty environment. Darrell will

identify the flowers of Joshua Tree National Park by scientific and common names, allowing the participants to get to know these amazing plants up close and personal. Students will look at the early flora, mainly annuals coming into bloom.

Couch Theater: Video/DVD Preview

“Creed II” (PG-13) -Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) faces off against the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) with the help of his mentor and boxing legend Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). The “Rocky” blueprint is in full effect here, so you won’t be surprised when, say, the fighter comes into the ring too arrogant and loses, or later when a grizzled, tough trainer (in this case, Rocky) breaks the fighter down and rebuilds him in an unforgiving environment (in this case, the desert). What you also should not be surprised to see is attention to detail, themes of honor and commitment to family, and some wonderful character development. Rather than being playedout, it’s well-played -- a “Rocky IV” for the next generation.

“Ben Is Back” (R) -- The bonds of a mother and son are tested on Christmas Eve, as Ben (Lucas Hedges) unexpectedly returns from rehab and is given an iron-clad rule for remaining: He must stay within the sight of his mother (Julia Roberts) at all times. As the lure of Ben’s old life tests him time and again,

the proximity reveals how addiction and drug use have distorted, marred and even taken lives in a small town. It is an understandably emotional journey for both, and Roberts and Hedges have done a lovely job of giving insight into the small tensions and big dramatic moments alike. Desert Institute Presents Intaglios Along the Colorado River Intaglios or large figures laid out on the ground are one of the unsolved mysteries of modern Archaeology. Officially classified as a form of rock art, there are over 300 intaglios in the American Southwest and Mexico. Daniel McCarthy will lead this all-day field class to three sites to explore these larger than life images preserved on the desert floor.

The best known of these are the Blythe Intaglios along the Colorado River that are famous for multiple human-like figures. The largest human figure is 240 feet in length! Participants will learn about these “gravel pictographs”

By Angela Shelf Medearis JAMAICAN-STYLE STEAMED FISH You also can prepare this recipe using sheets of aluminum foil or in small, lunch-sized paper bags.

Twist or fold the ends to seal the foil or the paper bag closed.

• 4 (8-ounce) fillets, use red snapper, tilapia, salmon, catfish, orange roughy, perch, whiting or whitefish • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 small yellow onion, peeled and sliced into rings • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, divided • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper, divided • 1 teaspoon ground allspice, divided • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and coarsely chopped • 1/4 teaspoon fresh, peeled, minced ginger • 12 cherry tomatoes, sliced • 12 mushrooms, sliced • 2 cups broccoli florets • 1 small red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded and diced • Leaves from 4 sprigs fresh thyme • Grated zest & juice of 1 lemon • 1/2 cup water • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 4 (12 by 14-inch) sheets parchment paper 1. Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add onions to the pan and season with a teaspoon each of salt and pepper, 1/2 teaspoon allspice and the cayenne pepper. Add garlic and ginger and continue cooking until the onions are slightly wilted. Set pan aside.

2. Pre-heat oven to 350 F. Fold the four pieces of parchment paper in half. Cut each folded sheet into half of a heart shape, staying close to the outside edges of the paper when cutting out the shape. Place opened, heart-shaped pieces of parchment on a rimmed baking

sheet. Place each fish filet to one side of the fold line of the heartshaped parchment, at least 2-inches from the paper’s edge. Place equal amounts of the onion mixture with any remaining liquid on top of the fish fillets. Place equal amounts of the cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and broccoli florets on the fish. Sprinkle vegetables with an equal amount of bell pepper, thyme and lemon zest.

3. Fold the top half of the parchment paper over the fish and vegetables to enclose. Starting at the top of the heart-shape, fold about 1/2 inch of the edge toward the center. Seal the paper closed by rolling, pinching and flattening the edges of the paper to form a “hem.” When the hem reaches the bottom tip of the heart, leave a small opening so you can add the steaming liquid.

4. Mix together lemon juice, water and soy sauce. Pour equal amounts of the liquid into each packet. Twist the bottom inch or two of the parchment to seal it, then fold it underneath to complete the seal.

5. Bake 11 to 12 minutes, or until the packets have puffed up.

Remove the pan of fish from the oven and let the fish rest for 2 minutes before opening the packets. The fish should be opaque and flake easily in the center. If the fish is not fully cooked, bake an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Serve immediately. Serves 4..
