Based on the 2001 film, “Legally Blonde - The Musical” is a journey from the sorority house to the halls of justice. Elle Woods appears to have it all, until her boyfriend dumps her to attend Harvard Law. Determined to get him back, Elle uses her ingenuity and charm to get into Harvard too, tackling stereotypes, snobbery and scandal along the way.

Legally Blonde — The Musical is “a high-energy … hymn to the glories of girlishness,” New York Times said.

The musical is a story of transformation, of girl power, of the realization of potential. The musical escorts the audience from the UCLA sorority house to the Harvard halls of justice with the timely coming of age story. A

fter coming to America at the age of 18 and $18 in debt, Wally Dreher worked his way up by learning numerous trades. Eventually, he saved enough money to purchase FLB Entertainment Center in 1979. Wally speaks various languages and is a true inspiration — the vision of the American dream.

For 40 years, FLB Entertainment Center has been in the Dreher family, and now, this entertainment experience has some of the most state-of-the-art equipment in the region making the bowling experience that much better.

Originally opened in 1960, FLB Entertainment Center is a Folsom staple for locals to go to bowl, watch sporting events, play cards and just have a great time with friends and family.

“Over the years, we’ve developed it to what it is today, which is a state-of-theart bowling center – arguably the most state-of-the-art bowling center in the whole region right now,” said co-owner Dan Dreher. “The sports bar has been rated year after year as the best sports bar in the Folsom area, and it’s hands down the best viewing experience. All the games that you could watch, we have them.

We have a lot of other fun stuff to do here as well.”

“We play everything from Texas hold ‘em to blackjack and three-card poker,” Dan said. “It’s all real money. We have tournaments every week.”

Throughout the past year, the Drehers have been busy growing, upgrading and remodeling all aspects of the business. From the menu, to their Friday specials and remodeling, there is much to see if you haven’t been into FLB Entertainment Center recently.

“We completely revamped our kitchen. The food coming out of there is phenomenal,” Dan said.

“We have gone a lot toward prepared in-house items, so we stepped up the quality of our products.”

Now offering traditional American cuisine, the menu is comparable to the Dreher’s Cameron Park restaurant and sports bar, Wally’s Pizza Bar. “We have great breakfast items, amazing burgers and a phenomenal happy hour,” he said. “A lot of the influence came from what we learned by running a full-blown restaurant, so we brought that down here to start improving our quality and consistency in everything we do in the kitchen.”

Some menu items include various salads, burgers, wraps, wings and more.

Dan said one of the biggest changes to the bowling center is now Friday bowling is open to the public from the moment the center opens.

to go bowling, you wouldn’t have been able to on a Friday unless it was late at night,” Dan said. “Now you can bowl all day and all night. We have open bowling unless we have a reserved party. This is huge for us because it’s never happened in the history of our business.”

The second biggest change to FLB Entertainment Center is the complete remodel of the bowling center.

“We have brand new state-of-the-art machines for the first time since this place opened. These machines are much quieter than the ones we originally had,” Dan said. “That was a huge, huge investment. We also have new scoring, so we updated all the scoring boards to a state-of-theart system with touch screens.”

In addition to the new bowling system, Dan said they also remodeled the whole décor from the floor to the couches and lighting.

“All these upgrades make the whole place look better, more up-to-date and modern,” he said.

At FLB Entertainment Center, they focus on ‘fun.’

“People come here to have fun, to enjoy themselves, whether it’s in the bowling center with friends and family or in the sports bar and casino with their buddies,” Dan said. “We have 20 craft beers on tap, a full bar with specialty cocktails, a great wine list and happy hour every Monday through Friday. We also have that fantastic menu to go along with that.”

When asked what his favorite thing about the business is, Dan said it was hard to pinpoint just one.

“My top-two would be that people come here to enjoy themselves and the employees,” he said. “We have a great, great group that works for us.

It’s enjoyable to come into work every day with people who are not only extremely great at what they do, but fun to work with.”

Dan said growing up in the business and now running it with his brother and sister is very special to him.

“It’s been a long time family affair, and we really enjoy being a part of 14 | Folsom Lake Entertainer

this community and running this business for so many decades,” Dan said. “We grew up here, and being a little kid walking through those doors to now running it as an owner; it’s a lifelong journey that this place has evolved over the years in a major way – it’s night and day different. Every year it has improved.”

Dan said he wishes he could go back in time and set up a GoPro. “It would be cool to set up a GoPro on time lapse to see how much the business has changed over the years and all the great people we’ve met and continue to meet,” he said. ✶

Hop on over to The Fat Rabbit

f you’re planning your St. Patrick’s Day destinations, look no further – The Fat Rabbit Public House is the perfect place to celebrate the luck of the Irish.

Opened six years ago by David Boyet and Dylan Maruo, this is not their first successful business venture. The two have been long-time businessmen along with owning Samuel Horne’s Tavern just up the street from The Fat Rabbit.

When the building came on the market, Boyet and Maruo were not looking for another business venture, but it just made sense to them, Boyet said.

“It was a lot of work to change it over to what it is now. If you used to come here before, it doesn’t look anything like it used to,” he said. “The Fat Rabbit is a very British-style pub.

I think it suits the community very well, as it likens itself to a village pub more than a neighborhood pub.”

Boyet said The Fat Rabbit has been his biggest business venture in his career when it comes to the amount size and space they have.

“It was out of my comfort zone, but we tackled it.” He said.

When asked how the pub got its name, Boyet said he used to call his son’s dog the fat rabbit because of the way he laid and had his tail bobbed.

“Sam Horne’s is under the name of Rabbit Hole Enterprises, LLC. The name came when Dylan called my first place a rabbit hole because people would come in and never leave, so the name stuck,” he said. “It’s also a British thing to do.”

British pub serves up European-English faire Rabbit is comfortable, relaxing and family-friendly, Boyet said. The pub is not a sports bar, but they do offer some sporting events upon request.

“We are 50/50 food and beer sales,” he said. “We also have hard alcohol, but we don’t really emphasize it. We try to create a very civilized atmosphere where anyone can come in and feel comfortable that they can have a nice time.”

The Fat Rabbit’s menu is unlike others, as they offer British dished with a few influences of German cuisine.

“We have the Schnitzel and sausages, but mostly do items such as Sheppard’s pie and fish and chips,” Boyet said. Other items include a patty melt, pierogies, burgers and unique salads.

“Our chef is extremely talented and will do a special every two days. He makes just incredible dishes that are always successful.”

One thing that Boyet mentioned was at The Fat Rabbit, they do not pass themselves off as an authentic British pub, but a European-English-style pub.

When asked what his favorite thing about the business was, Boyet said the diversity of people.

“This place is for everyone,” he said. “It’s a community pub and people have embraced that and enjoy it.”

For St. Patrick’s Day, The Fat Rabbit doesn’t do green beer, but they do add a special item to their menu – corn beef and cabbage.

“We’ll also bring in some extra Guinness, but other than that, we just open the doors and brace ourselves. If you’re good at what you do, why change?” he said. “We’re built for the holiday and don’t have to alter what we do for it. It is one of the only days of the year where we have a doorman because it does get understandably crowded.”

Boyet said if you haven’t been to The Fat Rabbit, give it a try.

“If you haven’t tried it, come down and do so,” he said. “We provide a very balanced menu, bar, and atmosphere that everyone can feel comfortable in.” ✶ March 2019 | 17

At the Palladio LUXE, guests receive the first-class experience of theaters, as one would on an airplane, said Margo Powers, food and beverage manager for Cinema West.

“We try to focus on doing a unique boutique experience with all in-theater dining,” she said. “We have comfort foods that are a little more elevated and a full bar with house-made cocktails, craft beer and higher-end wines.”

With menu items such as popcorn chicken, calamari, burgers, flatbreads and your standard candy and popcorn, there is much to choose from.

“Our garlic fries and burgers are top sellers, as well as our warm cookies,” Powers said. “Also on our large menu are some healthy options such as salads and wraps.”

At the Palladio LUXE after 5 p.m., the clientele is 21 years and older.

“The atmosphere is like a dinner and a movie — a date night kind of thing. We do have our regulars, but this is a higher caliber place to go where you know that you’ll have a different experience than what a normal standard theater would give you,” she said. “The personable service that we have is a lot different than some of the turn-and-burn theaters out there.”

The Palladio LUXE is exclusively small with only six and a total of 260 seats in the entire building.

“Our largest theater has 49 seats, so it’s not an overwhelming experience. It’s cozy,” Powers said. “We cycle through movies very quickly because there are only six theaters, so we try to keep everything fresh.

Because it is that special experience, we don’t want to have old-run movies. People expect something new, exciting and better, and that’s what we try to offer.”

Mac Hill, the theater’s general manager, said the customer response has been great.

“I think because we are so small and always on the floor, customers feel comfortable speaking with us. We are a lot more approachable compared to standard theaters where it’s hard to find a manager to give feedback,” Hill said. “With our level of service and level of food quality, the guests have been very happy with us.”

Something unique about the Palladio LUXE is during popular movie releases, they will create specialty cocktails to go with them, and they are always changing.

“We switch up our cocktails very often. You might come for the Captain Marvel drink, but by the Avengers come, we’ll have something new,” Hill said.

Powers said that guests love the specially-themed drinks while they watch their movie.

hether you’re looking for a fresh home décor setting or a cute new outfit, Luxe Living has it all at an affordable price.

Owner Stephanie Houston has been in the interior design and fashion world for more than 20 years and prides herself on offering low prices that beat big store prices and making her customers feel amazing.

Opened in October of 2018, Luxe Living offers a mix of half home décor and half woman’s apparel, specializing in sizes small up to 3x. She opened Luxe for her love of decorating.

“Always, since I was a teenager, I just dream it all night long, and I can’t get enough of decorating. It’s what I really love to do,” Houston said. “Apparel and fashion has kind of the same properties as decorating with layers and styles, based on body type and lifestyle, so the two kind of blend themselves with each other.”

Houston said helping customers decorate their home and pulling together an outfit is what really drives her.

This spring, the Pantone color of 2019 is coral, she said.

On the apparel side, Houston focuses on woman’s clothing, not juniors.

“I do what is cut for a woman and my claim to fame with apparel and home décor is affordability. I can compete with big store prices, and I’m a boutique, so that’s pretty rare for a specialty store,” Houston said. “I just feel that you should be able to look good, or love your home and not have to break the bank.”

One thing that Houston said she’ll never get tired of hearing from her customers is, “Thank you.”

“It’s hard for women to find a plus-size shop that is fashionable and affordable. All of that is really hard to find,” she said. “I get thanked every day for having plus-size clothing for woman. It’s pretty awesome to be thanked every day for what I offer, and that just re-instills what I’m doing and that I’m on the right path.”

With Houston’s long history in the fashion industry, she is able to pull a handful of things and know what looks good on a customer depending on their body type.

“Not everyone likes shopping – I love it and I live for it,” she said. “If you’re someone who doesn’t like to shop or have creativity to pull something together, I can do that for you and pull things quickly. Nine times out of 10, a customer will leave with an outfit.”

When asked what kind of home décor styles she offers, Houston said she has styles that she likes herself, which is a variety.

“I like so many styles, which is why when I did interior decorating, it was easy. I may not have everything here, but I try to offer a range of style for people. Some are into the farmhouse thing, or French old world style to even a urban-rustic look,” she said. “I have all those styles.”

With Houston’s eye for design, she welcomes customers to bring in photos of their home, and she will

pull décor that will fit perfectly.

“I do go out and do in-home decorating as well,” she said. “If someone comes in and they already have the candlesticks or the tray, I always tell them to bring in what they have, and we can play with it and add to it to get them what they are looking for. You don’t always have to start over. Sometimes, you just need to add to what you already have.”

Houston said it is the same with apparel.

“If you have a pair of pants and need a top to go with it, bring in the pants and we’ll complete your outfit. Sometimes, customers have the outfit, and we just need to accessorize,” she said.

When asked what her favorite thing about her boutique is, Houston said being able to be creative every day.

“I get to redecorate all the time. I get new clothing and jewelry three times a week, so it’s ever changing, and I’m always creating. I love to create something beautiful,” she said. “I’m never going to be rich doing this, but I can make a living doing something that gives me my creative outlet, I think that’s a win-win.”

Houston wants her customers to know that she isn’t in business to make a sale; she’s in business to create customer confidence.

“I always like to instill customer confidence. I’m not about a sale,” she said. “If they’re putting something together and I’m not feeling it, I’m always honest, and they thank me for that. You want to feel good in what you’re wearing, and I want you to feel that way leaving my store. I’m always truthful and give my real advice, and that’s always worked for me in the past.”

Houston said she hopes to be the local go-to spot for decorating needs.

“If you need to throw together a table scape, or need a look for going out on the weekend really quick, I want to be your resource, your run-to store because I can help with that,” Houston said. ✶ March 2019 | 23

t’s that time of year again where wine tasters can satisfy their WINEderlust in the beauty of the Sierra Foothills by visiting dozens of wineries with breathtaking vineyards and exclusive winemaker galas. The grandiose Passport Weekend event is has returned and will grace the El Dorado County wineries in full force during the first two weekends of April; both Saturdays and Sundays (April 6 and 7, and April 13 and 14), from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. With over 20 El Dorado County wineries participating in the Passport Weekend, visitors will enjoy sensational bites, live music, fantastic deals on Passport-only wine purchases, as well as a plethora of other fun wine country experiences, all while enjoying the picturesque views of El Dorado Wine Country.

NEW this year are the Passport Winemaker Galas, held on Friday, April 5 and April 12, at Mercedes-Benz of El Dorado Hills from 7 to 9 p.m. Each intimate evening will be a chance to meet and taste with El Dorado County winemakers, as they personally introduce wines rarely tasted by the general public. Winemakers will present their hand-selected special reserve wines, rare bottlings, library wines, and other exclusive offerings.

The evening’s wines will be accompanied by hors d’oeuvres from the region’s top restaurants. Live music and a silent auction of limited handpicked offerings will cap off the evening. Put on your “wine country evening attire” and be prepared to kick off your Passport Weekend in style. Tickets cost $85 per person for either of the two Friday events.

During the weekend activities, all participating wineries are presenting themed wine and food pairings. A few dollars more get participants a full menu of exclusive VIP offerings. The following is a taste of what wine lovers will discover during El Dorado’s Passport Weekend: Chateau Davell offers a Mediterranean-inspired pairing menu featuring local, organic ingredients, including herbs and veggies from its kitchen garden, along with their estate and reserve wines. With a VIP pass, participants will enjoy a vertical tasting paired with lamb stew and a chance to win a one-on-one barrel tasting with the winemaker.

Camellia Cup 53rd annual regatta set to sail on Folsom Lake Story and photos By Bill sullivan

I

t’s a tradition that has weathered more than five decades, survived a number of drought years and continues to be an event of grand stature on the waters of Folsom Lake. It’s the annual Camellia Cup regatta and it is ready to set sail April 27 and 28 and entries are open for this year’s competition.

Celebrating its 53rd year, the Camellia Cup marks the official start of boating season in the Sacramento Valley. 2019 should be a grand year for the event with record snowfall runoff expected to top off Folsom Lake in time for the event.

Hosted by the Folsom Lake Yacht Club, the event is unique in the way of regattas. Not only do sailors compete in various classes of boats, but they go head to head for the coveted Camellia Cup Championship title as well as the honor of being Sacramento Valley’s best sailor.

The two-day affair traditionally consists of five total races, with three events slated for Saturday and two on Sunday. Competitors will set sail from Browns Ravine Marina, which is on the east side of Folsom Lake.

Before the events begin. Sailors check in for the event as early as 5 a.m. on sailing day and there is a routine skippers meeting at 9 a.m. prior to the official start of the event at 10:30 a.m. The start of the race and throughout the day, plenty of viewing and photo opportunities become available as Folsom’s blue waters become decorated with a fleet of vessels that are visible from the shores of Folsom and Granite Bay throughout the afternoon.

Last year, consistent sailing in both light and strong wind was a key to Mark Erdrich, of Sacramento, winning the 52nd Camellia Cup regatta. This was the second Camellia Cup victory for Erdrich, 57, who led the seven-boat Santana 20 class in four races conducted by the Folsom Lake Yacht Club (FLYC).

Representing FLYC on Fusion with midman/tactician Austin Quilty and bowman Dave Kerner, Erdrich finished first three times and second once to win his class, the C&T Sailboats Perpetual Keelboat Trophy and the Camellia Cup. Two years ago, Craig Lee, 63, of El Dorado Hills, won the top honors as the regatta’s best overall sailor. Sailing his 13-foot-long Banshee, In-n-Out, the El Dorado Hills resident finished first place twice and second place twice in four qualifying races to win the 11-boat Banshee fleet and Open Centerboard class. This was Lee’s second Camellia Cup championship and his third Open Centerboard class perpetual trophy win.

Other locals that are known to compete in this event include Kerry Johnson and Jack Tatum, of El Dorado Hills “For sailors in the Sacramento area, this is the start of the sailing season,” said John Poimiroo, vice commodore of the Folsom Lake Yacht Club. “At this event, there are some really experienced competitors. It is a great way to improve your sailing ability and it is great for people who love sailing.”

olsom’s iconic Rainbow Bridge recently turned 100, and now the City of Folsom is inviting everyone in the community to join in the 100day centennial celebration, ending on May 4.

The centennial celebration began on Feb. 10 with a variety of special promotions, events and activities that are taking place over the 100 days leading up to the main day-long celebration on Saturday, May 4, in Historic Folsom.

Four Folsom schools and several local engineering firms will participate in a Rainbow Bridge design contest. Students will build model structures and engineers will test the load capacity to determine the winner. Judging will take place during the special event planned for Saturday, May 4.

Historic walking tours of the bridge will take place in May. The Folsom History Museum will feature a Rainbow Bridge exhibit in April and May and feature commemorative merchandise in the gift store. the History of California Wine

Long before the Napa Valley became a household name when it comes to wine, the most popular wines in the United States came from places like New York, Virginia, Ohio and Missouri. Surprisingly, if you go back far enough in the history of wine making, some of the European varietals were being cultivated in unexpected regions such as Los Angeles and Anaheim in the 1830s.

The origins of the Napa Valley began with the contributions of several brave contributors, two of which are Joseph Osborne and George C. Yount. When George C. Yount cultivated his first vineyards in the 1830s, California had not yet been granted statehood and was still considered part of Mexico.

It was only as a result of a grant by the Mexican government and the cultivating of numerous vineyards in the area by George C. Yount, that the famous town of Yountville ever came about.

Joseph Osborne also took a risk in the 1950s and planted vineyards along a 1,800-acre tract of land he named Oak Knoll. Over time, that same tract has been split and re-split, resulting in the origins of some of the best vineyards in the Napa Valley.

The origins of Calistoga came soon after, in 1859 through the purchase and development of a large tract of land by Samuel Brannan. This area quickly grew in popularity and became known as Agua Caliente Ranch, and later with the development of over 100 acres of vines, as the region we now call Calistoga.

A man by the name of John Patchett was credited however with creating the first official winery in the Napa Valley. Patchett began planting vines in 1854 and just three years later constructed a cellar.

The Napa Valley continued to establish itself on the map with the development of the Charles Krug winery in 1861. Several other wineries quickly followed including the establishment of Schramsberg in 1862 by Jacob Schram, and Mt. Veeder which took its name from the development of vineyards

by Peter Veeder in 1864. Captain Stalham Wing brought prominent vines to the area as well and inspired the eventual naming of the Wing Canyon area.

Thomas Rutherford cultivated the vineyard resulting in the Rutherford appellation in 1874 and the St. Helena Winery, which has since been changed to Merryvale, was cultivated by Joseph Ghisletta.

Although there are two many contributors to the Napa region history to discuss in great detail here, the Napa Valley proudly boasts 16 unique American Viticultural areas knows as AVA’s including the following: Los Carneros 1983; Howell Mountain 1983; Wild Horse Valley 1988; Stags Leap District 1989; Mt. Veeder 1990; Atlas Peak 1992; Spring Mountain 1993; Oakville 1993; St. Helena 1995; Yountville 1999; Diamond Mountain 2001; Oak Knoll 2004; Calistoga 2009; Coombsville 2011.

O

ne of the most beautiful spots in the Shenandoah Valley is down a meandering country road that leads to one of Amador’s most historic and important Amador County wineries and that winery tells a story in itself. The Story vineyards are headpruned, dry farmed, and sustainably raised, and is one of the oldest estate vineyards dated back to 1894. Dry farming allows the vines to search out water in the natural water table of the land eliminating the need for any irrigation. Additionally, head pruning allows the vines to utilize the constant summer breezes to naturally keep mildew away.

Story Winery is known for the most picturesque and ideal picnic spot in Amador County. However, keep in mind that Story Winery not only hosts special events such as weddings, but offers a beautiful venue for a photo shoot. Visit the website regarding the facilities and open house dates to see for yourself.

On any visit customers will find out two things. First, the setting and tasting room staff are a highlight of any visit to Amador wine country (and is always open, rain or shine). Second, the wines at Story are made only in small individual lots, so if you love them, buy as much as you can because they run out quickly. ✶

W

hile Folsom will not be a host city or a destination this year for the Amgen Tour of California, neighboring Rancho Cordova will be a host city and fans south of Highway 50 in Folsom and El Dorado Hills will get a taste when it rolls through the region May 12-18.

The 2019 route was announced by officials last week and will be the longest, most challenging route in the 14-year history of the tour, according to AEG, who owns and presented what is America’s only UCI World Tour Race.

“The Amgen Tour of California is the pinnacle of cycling in America.

more long road days than ever before. With the best of the best in cycling coming to California to contest it, we are in for another memorable race,” said Kristin Klein, president of the Amgen Tour of California.

Throughout seven stages over seven days the world’s best professional cyclists will contest mountain roads, highways and coastlines from Sacramento to Pasadena. The 773-mile course will travel through 13 host cities and feature 14 sprints with more than 68,000 feet of elevation gain and 25 King of the Mountain climbs, the most in race history.

Stage 1 of the 2019 race will take riders through Sacramento and Yolo Counties before trekking to our neck of the woods for the second stage of the event on May 13.

For the first time in tour history, Rancho Cordova will be a stage host for Stage 2. While the start is just a 15-minute drive from the Stage 1 finish, this day of racing will be the polar opposite of Stage 1. The stage will start at sea level. By the end of the day, the racers will have garnered nearly 15,000 feet of climbing over 121 miles of racing.

Heading east from the start, the route will follow departing from Rancho Cordova and traveling up White Rock Road through El Dorado Hills and then connect with the Stage 6 course from 2018. After passing by El Dorado Hills Town Center, the route will take riders up into El Dorado County into Placerville, before heading onto the Mormon Emigrant Trail and Highway 88.

“We are thrilled to have the Amgen Tour in our own backyard again as well as near our El Dorado Hills store,” said Erin Gorrell, co-owner of Folsom Bike. “This amazing event continues to showcase to the world how California embraces cycling and they too can come experience the same routes the pros ride right in our communities.”

During the route that brings the riders locally, they will also encounter a great amount of elevation. Carson pass tops out at 8,620 feet, the highest point the race has ever reached in its 14 years.

A long descent will allow the riders a short rest, but a left turn onto Highway 89 will take them to the top of Luther Pass and into South Lake Tahoe. For those that have raced to South Lake Tahoe in previous years, they know that a brutal finish up the steep roads to the Heavenly ski area finish looms ahead.

The 2019 route will conclude in Santa Clarita, Pasadena this year. Following the awards ceremony, the Rose Bowl will be hosting the inaugural Rose Pedal, an open streets event, where attendees can cycle, run or walk the closed course and participate in fitness activities for the remainder of the day.

“We look forward to shining a spotlight on the beauty of California and the dedication of these athletes for fans,” Klein said, “in person and via the worldwide broadcast, in what will be one of the most exciting sporting events in the country this year.”

The Amgen Tour of California is designed to cover varied terrain, with opportunities for sprinters, climbers and general classification riders to shine throughout the week. With Rancho Cordova hosting the tour for the very first time, it is expected cyclists and fans will being a great amount of commerce to not only the host city but those surrounding it and along the route, inclusive of Folsom and El Dorado Hills, both which are very popular cycling cities.

Luxurious leeks for cozy nights I

n Chicago, which is where I just moved from, this time of year means temperatures that freeze your nose hairs when you walk outside and bulky clothes that make Siberian prison guards look stylish. March is three months past “oh, look at the pretty snowflakes!” and two months before “damn, I forgot to shave my legs.”

In other words, it’s still this time of year, Not Feeling Guilty for Eating Comfort Food.

Northern California isn’t quite Chicago — apparently it’s a two-hour drive to snowfall, or so I’ve been told. But somehow, even though it never really gets that cold here in the winter, I never really feel that warm, either. Chicagoans wage an all-out war against the cold. (They either win or die.) Here, it’s more like a Cold War. No pun intended.

So, in the name of cozying up to comfort food, I’ve brought out two of my favorite dishes: creamy risotto and not-skimping-on-calories quiche.

Both are infinitely flexible and can adapt to whatever you have on hand. In other words: those days when you come home from work, turn on the heat, and stand in front

of the open refrigerator hoping inspiration will hit you like cupid. These are for those kinds of days.

Both of these recipes have a heavy dose of leeks, our vegetable of the month here at the magazine and a definite winter crop.

The leek, a close relative of onions and garlic, is less potent than its counterparts. In fact, it’s downright subtle — even sweet. These recipes try to play up the flavor without losing that subtlety. And, they leave plenty of room for you to riff, as well.

Here’s to the last few days of winter, to coziness, and, of course — to leeks.

Leek and spinach risotto

Serves 4-6

Ingredients: 3 leeks 4 tablespoons olive oil or butter, divided 6 cups vegetable broth ½ cup dry white wine 1 ½ cups Arborio rice 3 cups fresh spinach ¼ cup fresh basil Zest of one lemon ½ cup Parmesan cheese, plus more for garnish parsley for garnish salt and pepper to taste Instructions: Bring the broth to a boil in a pot. Then turn it down to low and keep it that way for the duration of this process. While it’s heating up, prep the leeks by washing and dicing only the white and light green portions of the leeks. (Discard the dark green parts; they’re too rough for most recipes.) To make sure you’ve removed all of the grit in between the layers, put the diced leeks into a bowl of water. Let them sit for a few minutes, then pour them into a colander and rinse. In a different medium-sized pot, heat 2 tablespoons of oil on medium heat. Add the leeks and stir them periodically for a few minutes, until they turn slightly translucent. Now, add the rest of the oil. Let it heat up and then add the rice. Stir the rice so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot, and wait until the grains turn slightly translucent. This will take a few minutes. Now pour in the white wine. Stir until the wine is absorbed.

Now for the broth: Pour in a ladle at a time, stirring periodically and waiting until the broth is absorbed before adding the next ladle. Do this until you’ve finished all of the broth. This will take 20 minutes or so and it’s the key reason risotto is such a decadent dish: the creaminess comes from the release of the starch in the rice, not any milk product. But, that creaminess is only achieved if you add the broth a little at a time and stir all the while. It will not happen if you add the broth all at once. You also want to be sure that the risotto is simmering with light bubbles. It should not be boiling, but it should be hot enough that the liquid is being absorbed. The risotto is finished when the mixture is creamy yet still pourable. It should not be too gummy; there should still be some liquid in the pot. Remove the risotto from the flame.

Now it’s time to accessorize. In other words: add the vegetables or proteins that will make it distinct. Risotto can be almost any flavor and will happily welcome most vegetables and proteins; hence its versatility. I used

vegetable broth, but you can easily change up the flavor by using seafood or chicken broth. (The only key is that the vegetables you add now must either be sautéed or roasted separately, or must cook within seconds — like the spinach in this recipe.)

Add the spinach and basil to the pot and mix. It will wilt instantly.

Now add the Parmesan, salt and pepper to taste, and the lemon zest. Mix, serve, and garnish with chopped parsley and extra parmesan.

Leek and mushroom quiche Makes 1 pie

Ingredients: 1 pie crust 3 leeks 2 tablespoons oil 6 large mushrooms, sliced 1 tablespoon minced garlic Salt and pepper to taste ¾ cup grated nutty cheese, like gruyere or Swiss 3 eggs 1 ½ cup milk Instructions: If you’re making your own pie crust, do that first. I compromise and buy pre-made dough, then roll it and bake it myself. Either way, baking it is the first step, so it can cool while you’re making the filling.

Now, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep the leeks as in the recipe above, but instead of dicing them, slice them. Heat the oil in a sauté pan, add the leeks, and sauté until they’re slightly translucent. Add the mushrooms, let them brown and reduce, and add the garlic, salt and pepper. Let this all sauté for a few minutes, then turn off the flame.

In a bowl, mix together the milk, eggs, and salt and pepper to taste.

If you have other fresh herbs on hand — basil, parsley, thyme — add them now. To assemble the quiche, pour the leek mixture into the pie crust, followed by the milk mixture, followed by the cheese. Bake for 35 minutes, or until crusty brown on top. If you want an even crustier top (I do!), broil it for a minute, keeping close eye on it the entire time. Enjoy!

Spring into fun at Tahoe 2nd annual Season Loaded brings events, competitions and fun

hile last month was a blizzardy winter wonderland, have no doubts that Lake Tahoe will have plenty of spring in its step on an off as a new season brings sunshine and a blooming abundance of things to do in an area known best as nature’s playground. This month and next, Lake Tahoe as a number of activities to partake in, from hitting the slopes, taking a cruise or enjoying some live entertainment at south shore.

Tahoe South, Lake Tahoe’s hub of information and activity for tourism, and its partners will host their second annual Spring Loaded, March 14 – April 7, 2019, offering dining and lodging deals, events and mountain fun. This period brings visitors to the area who can enjoy sunny skies along with plenty of winter activities below.

“We own spring skiing with bluebird powder days and action that continues off the slopes,” said Carol Chaplin, CEO and president of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “South Tahoe is known as one of the country’s most popular spring skiing towns and Spring Loaded adds to the reputation.”

ON THE SLOPES Ride for a good cause and benefit cancer patients in the greater South Lake Tahoe area during the inaugural Barton Foundation’s Pink Heavenly. This slope side fundraising event at Heavenly Mountain Resort is making tracks, March 23. hieli Minucci is the leader of the Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz group, Special EFX which formed in 1982. Minucci and Special EFX have recorded and released a combined 31 CDs, eight of those being solo releases. 2018 marked their 35th anniversary as a recording and concert touring act.

“Deep as the Night” from the band’s 2017 CD with that same title was recently named the No. 1 smooth jazz song for 2018 by Billboard. The music of Special EFX has been described as “accessible yet slightly experimental music that combined … smooth jazz, rock, and various African and Latin rhythms.”

In addition Minucci has recorded and performed with top pop artists such as Celine Dion, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Bolton, Jewel, Mark Anthony, Anastasia, as well as jazz artists Kirk Whalum, Jeff Lorber, Norman Brown, Bernie Williams, Marion Meadows, The Lao Tizer Band, Mindi Abair, Rick Braun, Nick Colionne, Gerald Veasley, Omar Hakim, and many others.

Chieli comes from a musical background. His father, Ulpio Minucci (concert pianist/composer) wrote the American songbook standard, and 1955 hit song, “Domani” (sung by Julius LaRosa), as well as “A Thousand Thoughts of You,” and “Felicia” (both sung by Nat King Cole).

Also known as a composer for television and film, Minucci has won three Emmy Awards, in 1998, 2007, and 2008, and in addition has been nominated for 10 Emmy Awards for his eclectic compositional work on CBS’s “The Guiding Light,” which holds the record as the longest running TV show in American history. He has written music for well-known programs such as

"Dancing With the Stars," "American Idol," "Good Morning America" (theme), "Bloomberg Radio" (theme), "Access Hollywood, " The 700 Club, and others. He also contributed music to the soundtracks of "Bowfinger," "Legally Blonde" and "Panic."

Chieli’s All-Stars include the soulful R and B vocalist Elliott Yamin, who rose to fame on the fifth season of "American Idol," coming in third place. The All-Stars also include Grammy-winning saxophonist Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea, Barbra Streisand), the amazing Karen Briggs (Yanni, Diana Ross) on violin and cutting edge keyboardist Lao Tizer (Down to the Bon, The Lao Tizer Band).

And to kick things off will be our own local jazz royalty: The Folsom High School Jazz Band 1, winners of the Downbeat National Jazz Award for the best High School Jazz Band in the country 13 times since 1994 including the last seven years in a row.

In 1963, American-born Ward Swingle first assembled a group of Parisian session singers to sing Bach’s keyboard music. The resulting album, “Jazz Sebastian Bach,” launched the Swingle Singers to fame. Since then, they have won five Grammy Awards and appeared on numerous film and TV soundtracks. In 2017, they co-wrote and performed a song for the end credits of Alexander Payne’s film Downsizing, starring Matt Damon.

Released in March 2017, The Swingles’ latest project is Folklore, a diverse collection of folk music from around the world, inspired by their international travels and featuring collaborations with traditional artists. With creative arrangements that transport these well-loved songs into the group’s unique and rich sound world, the results are powerful and surprising.

The group’s versatility has led to collaborations with artists as diverse as the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jamie Cullum and Labrinth. Luciano Berio was one of the first composers to explore the sound of the Swingles’ amplified voices in an orchestral setting with his groundbreaking Sinfonia. The group continues to perform the piece to great acclaim around the world, with recent performances at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall and Milan’s La Scala; they look forward to bringing it to new audiences for its 50th anniversary in 2018-19.

In addition to a busy touring schedule that regularly takes them to North and South America, Europe and Asia, The Swingles present their own London A Cappella Festival at Kings Place each January in partnership with Ikon Arts Management. The Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot is lovingly ripped off from the film classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail, with music and lyrics by the Grammy-winning team of Eric Idle and John Du Prez. Spamalot tells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. The Harris Center welcomes the 15th Anniversary World Tour of Spamalot to Stage One! The original Broadway production of Spamalot won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End runs. During its initial run of 1,575 performances, it was seen by more than two million people and

But Spamalot traces its history back to Monty Python’s Flying Circus— a group of Englishmen ( John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Eric Idle) and one American (Terry Gilliam) who “combined the anarchy of the Marx Brothers with a rarefied British spirit of absurdity and a straight-faced irreverence regarding all sacred cows.”

(New York Times). This year marks the 50th anniversary of Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

Spamalot “lovingly ripped off ” the very, very low-budget 1975 movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” The film was written by the Pythons and directed

by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones. In the film, creative measures were often used to save money. The Pythons were originally going to ride horses, but then they realized they didn’t have the money to do so, the actors used techniques with roots in the early radio in Britain: they bashed together empty coconut halves to replicate the clopping sound of horse’s hooves as they pranced through the countryside.

(In 2006, to mark the first anniversary of the official Broadway opening, the “World’s Largest Coconut Orchestra”—1,789 people clapping together half coconut shells--performed in Shubert

Alley, outside the theatre. The claim was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.)

Please note that the Broadway musical Spamalot is only a partial rip-off of the spectacularly low-budget film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” To quote the press materials, “this extravagantly over budget musical, on the other hand, features a chorus of hunky men and sexy dancing girls, eye-popping sets, lavish costumes, plenty of fun songs and several (extremely tasteful) potshots at theatrical institutions like Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Les Miserables.”

As 2019 is in full swing and off to a fast start in real estate, let’s take a moment to review 2018 and what’s happening in 2019.

Go find your favorite local coffee shop or brew pub, grab a sandwich and enjoy a little time to read this column. By the way, I like to go to Sourdough & Co. in El Dorado Hills Town Center.

Those sandwiches are amazing. It’s the bread. I’m partial to the turkey and salami, hold the mayo.

While I sell lots of homes in the El Dorado Hills, Folsom and surrounding areas and talk to lots and lots of people each week, the number of conversations that I have is small when compared to the market as a whole. So I talk with my peers, title company escrow officers, local lenders, brokers, appraisers and read what other industry experts observe and predict.

Most agree that the market has changed in recent months. Homes are still selling, and buyers are still writing strong offers. But I noticed a marked change in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Interest rates bumped up going into the holidays.

Buyers seemed to be more on the edge of their buying power, affecting their ability to get loans to purchase the home. More transactions struggled as buyers seem to fall out of escrow with more frequency.

The opinions of many of my peers emphasize their observations. Debbie Wilhelm, of Coldwell Banker in San Mateo, observed that San Mateo County dropped more than 10 percent in the last quarter of 2018. The common misconception is that homes are never over-priced in that area.

Interestingly, she also commented that the stock market has a greater impact on their market than interest rates. Since our area is impacted by the trends of the Bay Area, is it fair to conclude that our market is probably impacted more by the stock market trends than is regularly discussed.

Other agents also support my other findings.

Open houses on the weekends have been really busy, and at a wide variety of price ranges. People are out there looking at homes, but their observations have differed in that more agents report that it’s taking more buyers seeing the home before they get offers and the offers are not as strong. They conclude that buyers are being more particular.

Do industry experts support that viewpoint?

The California Association of Realtors 2019 Housing Market Forecast predicts that prices will remain steady in 2019 and that interest rates will rise. They observed several trends. Interest rates rose to more than 5 percent, but have since retreated to mid-2018 levels. December 2018 sales were down more than 11 percent compared to previous year. The government shutdown impacted buyers and sellers. They report that 25 percent of buyers decided not to buy, but only 6 percent of sellers decided not to sell. Interestingly, all price segments are experiencing declining sales, including a reduction of more than 11 percent in the $500,000 to $749,000 price range which is such an important part of our market in this area.

Like always, let’s take a brief look at Folsom and El Dorado Hills markets, comparing 2018 to 2017. Forget about those California Association of Realtors statistics as this area rocks in $500,000 to $749,000 range. In Folsom, the average sales price for 2018 was more than $565,000, up from around $520,000 in 2017. Similarly in El Dorado Hills, average price of home that sold in 2018 jumped to more than $744,000. In 2018, both markets saw homes sell faster, with a higher price per square foot and with a higher sales price to listing price when compared to 2017. While Folsom sold 24 less homes in 2018, it appears to be a function of having fewer homes to sell.
