Let’s play ball

Little League teams ready for spring games

I

t’s an early celebration of spring that captures the heart of the community. On March 9, more than 340 children will put on their team uniforms and excited smiles for the annual Lakeside Little League opening day parade in Granite Bay. Lakeside Public Relations Director Jennifer Longoria describes it as fabulous.

“It’s a community parade and we invite community partners to participate as well …,” she said. “There’s a mounted patrol from the California Highway Patrol, fire trucks and community vendors. We try to make it a big community event.”

The short parade route begins on East Roseville Parkway at 9 a.m. and ends at Ronald L. Feist Park on Twin Schools Road.

“At the park, we have our opening ceremony where we thank sponsors and announce all the teams,” she said. “We also have community vendors — local shops, yogurt, pizza, bounce houses for the kids. Lots of fun things.”

Children — both boys and girls — are eligible to join Little League at

5 years old, learning the basics of the game in T-ball.

“They move up in the ranks according to age,” Longoria said. “As they get older, it becomes more skilled.”

After T-ball, the children move on to Rookie, Farm, AA, AAA and Majors.

There are also Intermediate 50-70 and Junior divisions. Each of Lakeside’s divisions has four to six teams this year.

The upper age limit is 14.

“It’s a wonderful program,” Longoria said. “It’s an all-play sport. It’s not separated by skill set. We also have what is called our Challenger division for kids with physical and development challenges. That’s why I love Little League. It gets more competitive as kids get older but no one gets left out and they all have playing time. Everyone plays. Everyone has a wonderful time.”

The all-volunteer endeavor — managers, coaches and board members — takes a lot of volunteer hours.

“We are blessed to have a large number of parents who give a considerable amount of time to help the league run efficiently,” Longoria said in an email.

“Leading the charge is our President Erika Braccailini, who does a fantastic job of balancing the widely varying expectations of parents and players in our league.

She is packed full of positive energy promoting Lakeside.”

In addition to the games, there are special events during the season — the third annual Home Run Derby is April 6. Lakeside Night at Grizzly Park (Granite Bay High School baseball) is April 12. The trip to CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

a River Cats game is May 5. For the adults, there’s the sixth annual Denim & Diamonds fundraiser on May 10 at the Blue Goose in Loomis. “(In the) Home Run Derby fundraiser, kids get to watch managers and coaches get out there and hit home runs…,” Longoria said. “On Little League Day with the River Cats, kids can go watch some great baseball and get that bigger park experience.”

She has had three sons in the program — one is now 16 but the other two areBY stillGLORIA participating.

YOUNG “I think team sports are excellent for youth,” she said. “It helps them build friendships and have the joy of winning, but also learning to lose gracefully.

It’s wonderful way to meet new friends.”

The Little League experience is built around the kids, but adults get a lot out of it as well. Longoria has been a volunteer for 10 years, including serving two years as board president, as she has watched her sons move through the divisions.

“It has a wonderful spirit around it — so much energy in the stands and in the ball park,” she said.

“It genuinely feels like the hub of Granite Bay when I’m there. It’s always a fun day at the diamond.

From adult perspective, I have met some of my very closest friends through Lakeside Little League. It is a wonderful community of Little League.”

Workshops a plenty to tap into creative side

ooking to create a one-of-kind pendant, rekindle macrame skills or let your inner artist shine? Gather Studio and Marketplace in Granite Bay has a workshop for it.

The business is the fulfillment of a longtime dream for do-it-yourselfer Meleya Walker, who opened the doors of the venture in late 2018.

She designed it as a haven for artists and crafters to share their expertise and sell their work.

The site includes class/workshop areas and the retail store.

Walker makes jewelry, sews, makes bath and body products and has done cake decorating.

“I just decided I’d live my passion,” she said. “I want to make things all day. I enjoy learning new things — learning different art forms and mediums from others. Also, I really wanted to support the artistic community. We should embrace them as a community and allow them to fulfill their passion and pay some bills at the same time.”

There are 50 artists and crafters from Placer and surrounding counties — Yolo, El Dorado, Sacramento and Nevada — who participate. Some of them teach workshops while others display their items for sale. Some do both.

There are onsite and offsite class and workshop options, crafting parties for adults and birthday and crafting parties for children.

“We have 10 options for kids’ parties where they make something,” Walker said.

“Our jewelry-making session is really popular. We also do team-building events at corporate sites.”

In addition, artists and private groups of six or more can rent space for their own classes or workshops.

On walk-in days, doors are open for visitors to try their hand at crafting. Among the project options are wood signs, macrame art and tote bag stenciling.

Walker teaches jewelry design, body scrub soap making and some of wood sign classes.

One of the most popular activities is the acrylic pour.

“It’s a canvas art piece,” she said. “We combine paint colors with a pouring medium that makes the paint flow really well and makes abstract art.”

Another favorite is making a wreath of succulents.

In the retail sales area, there is plenty to browse.

“We call it a marketplace,” Walker said. “We have everything from children’s clothing to candles, soap, jewelry, purses, wood signs, bath and body products, hats, shirts and art work. There’s a pretty good variety. Everything is made locally by hand (or with handmade touches). We look for high-quality products.”

noons a week in return for taking classes and workshops. Walker is looking for other volunteers who would like to do the same.

She grew up in Colfax and has spent her adult life in the Sacramento area. The business is Walker’s own creation and reflects her dedication to craftsmanship.

“I really enjoy meeting the different people from the community and working with vendors and getting to check out all their really cool products,” she said. “ I really enjoy seeing people having a good time while they are taking the workshops and the sense of community. The highlight is the community aspect.”

Spring seeds March into planting season

4 tips to plan for a growing, blooming garden

T

he signs of spring are here: the bright pink galoshes you were so excited about buying in November look crusty and worn, you no longer rush into the house and crank up the heat before you put your purse down, and everything outside looks soft and green, like the Pashmina scarf you got for Christmas.

In other words: it’s planting season.

In northern California, where rain saturates the ground with nutrients all winter long, March is the month to start planning your garden. Whether yours is a 5-acre farm with chicken coops and grapevines, or a 5-meter patio with barely enough room for a compost bin, the possibilities are endless.

“We have a great growing climate here in northern California,” said Kevin Hoyt, nursery manager at Bushnell Gardens in Granite Bay. “It’s just about selecting the right plant for the right location.”

Hoyt would know. Bushnell’s, whose owner Dave was featured on HGTV’s “The Ultimate Crash” show, has 20 acres of plants on site, plus two other growing sites nearby, 85 and 100 acres respectively. And, they grow 90 percent of their plants themselves, in Placer County.

“We know what grows well here,” said Hoyt. “Most nurseries bring in plants from outside the area, but then their roots fry here in the heat. Our plants are native to this soil.”

According to Hoyt, there are a some basic things to consider when planning a garden, regardless of how much space you have available.

1. IRRIGATION “The first thing you need to do is asses, ‘what are my water needs,’” said Hoyt. “Can I keep these plants alive in a drought?”

Setting up an irrigation infrastructure is simpler than it sounds, said Hoyt, and can be achieved through a sprinkler system or DIY tubing. Hoyt recommends a drip system that uses black rubber “funny tubing,” which is novice-friendly and cheap. Tubing can be placed anywhere, attached to multiple emitters that drip water into the plants’ roots, and then covered in mulch or buried underground.

Holes in tubing are easily fixed through splicing the good tubes together.

2. THEME “The first thing I do when someone walks in here with a blank slate is help them come up with a theme,” said Hoyt. “A theme steers you in the right direction, gives you a signature style, sets you apart from your neighbors.”

A Mediterranean-themed garden, for instance — appropriate for a climate like Placer County’s — might include a fan palm, Italian cyprus, weeping cedars, olive trees, lavender or rosemary. It might also include bright blue pots or a water fountain. In contrast, an CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

3. START DREAMING “We encourage people to take pictures of their outdoor space, print those out, and bring them in to the store so we can draw on them,” said Hoyt.

Unlike other nurseries, which are more manicured and carry hundreds of each plant, Bushnell’s feels like visiting someone’s home garden — 20 acres of it, that is. There is a more organic, non-staged feel to this space, and no vignette is the same.

“We don’t tell people what to buy. We let them see ideas we’ve tried and hope they get inspired by the possibilities.

We give them the bones and they fill in the skin, which is the plants they like.”

4. PICK YOUR BIG-HITTERS

BY GLORIA YOUNG “Choose your top specimens,” said Hoyt. “These are your focal plants that will draw a lot of attention.” If your backyard is small or mostly patio, this is even more important.

And, said Hoyt, these may not even be plants, but a bench or statue. Hoys said it’s important to think about vertical space as well, which is why urns and planters are good options for small spaces.

Most gardens will also want some areas of shade, said Hoyt, which means planting trees in fall, so the roots can soak up winter rain and are more established by springtime. Some fast-growing trees that do well in Placer County are the Bradford pear or the Purple Pony plum, which offers bright purple flowers against a white or beige stucco.

If your home has room for a backyard orchard, said Hoyt, take advantage of it, since fruit grows exceptionally well here.

Citrus, especially, but also stone fruits, persimmon, pears, apples and olives.

Other popular items Hoyt recommends are camellia bushes, Japanese maples and weeping cedars.

Finally, said Hoyt, consider sustainability. Bushnell’s is experimenting with drought-resistant plants that need little irrigation. For instance: Kurapia, a ground-cover sod that acts like grass but only needs watering every 20 to 30 days. Hoyt also recommends keeping chickens if you have the space, since they keep weeds out and feed nutrients into the soil by defecating. Bushnell’s has four chicken coops, which is where they put all their fallen leaves at the end of fall. These leaves serve as bedding material for the chickens, and then turn into humus.

“This is some of the most nutritious soil around,” said Hoyt.

But the real secret to planting a garden doesn’t require a visit to an expert. It’s this: Make the garden your own. It should be the kind of place you want to spend time in. Plant what makes you happy; the rest is just details.

Online shop caters to moms

W

hat do you do when you can’t find the product you’re seeking?

For Amy and Alec Atkin, the answer was to open their own business.

The Granite Bay couple’s successful online retail company, TummyStyle Maternity and Baby Clothes, specializes in clothing and accessories for moms-to-be, postpartum and nursing mothers and their infants.

The idea originated in Amy Atkin’s experience shopping for clothes during her first two pregnancies. Her son was born in 2002 and a daughter was born two years later. (A third child — another daughter — arrived in 2008.) The Atkins both worked for Hewlett Packard at that time and she needed maternity clothing that was professional looking but still comfortable.

“There was not a lot available online and I had no time for malls,” she said.

Having an online business was also appealing because it would allow her to be at home with her children.

“I just wanted to spend more time with them at home,” she

said. “I had a full-time nanny and I felt I was missing out on their milestones.”

Both Atkins have an MBA. After getting a business license, Amy visited Los Angeles to do her homework — seeking out brands that exclusively sold maternity and nursing wear online.

It took a year to identify the brands she would carry and set up the website.

“Then I quit my job at Hewlett Packard and just plunged in,” she said. “(My husband and I) are both entrepreneurs at heart.

We always had a desire to do our own thing.”

She is the CEO of the company. He is the CFO while continuing his own career in the corporate world.

With the website up and running, the next hurdle was raising its profile to attract customers. Atkin accomplished that through a blog. She became an author on Ezine, publishing some 200 articles.

“The blog, which I maintained for many years, did not get transferred to the current hosting platform for our website, but it definitely helped with traffic to our site for many years and hopefully gave new and expecting moms useful information on all topics from maternity fashion, breastfeeding tips, fitting a nursing bra, nutrition and recipes, combating morning sickness to what to take to the hospital when you’re having a baby,” she said in an email.

She boosted her knowledge through research and also became certified as a lactation educator consultant.

“This certification allows me to teach a breastfeeding classes in a hospital (or elsewhere) and provide over-the-phone or in-person advice on breastfeeding,” she said.

Her clothing line is a mix of things she looked for during her pregnancy and breast-feeding years — not only professional and dressy items, but casual and functional pieces, too.

“Postpartum clothing that looks nice and has nursing access even though it doesn’t scream that — things that aren’t obvious but still flattering,” she said. “As I regained my shape, I needed transition wear. That was what interested me most.”

These days, the TummyStyle selection offers all that and extends to bathing suits, maternity pajamas, nursing pajamas and robes. The baby wear selection includes coordinating outfits.

“This has been incredibly popular — a baby outfit and something for mom, too,” she said.

Atkin made the leap to brick and mortar three years ago, opening a store in the Country Gables Center in Granite Bay. It gave

her an opportunity to boost her brand locally — on the website she sells nationally and internationally — and it allowed her to communicate face-to-face with her customers.

She closed the store last summer and now focuses solely on the Internet site.

“I did enjoy it,” Atkin said about the store. “But the expense of running it and having a staff and with traffic not being what we had hoped for, I returned to my house. We have built an extension where we run our online business. We keep inventory here, ship it from here — everything is done here.”

For Atkin, returning to a home business is the best balance for a mom of three.

Her advice to expecting moms is to have fun with fashion.

“When you are pregnant and need a new wardrobe anyway, it’s a perfect time to experiment with new looks,” she said. “I found I really enjoyed dresses when I was expecting, although I never was much of a dress person before unless it was a really formal situation. During pregnancy, dresses were my go-to wardrobe choice and so comfortable and easy to wear. Pregnancy is definitely a time to indulge yourself a little and feel good about your changing shape and all the work your body is doing to create a new person!”

Sewing for girls’ future

Area residents craft kits that help youth to go to school

en years ago Celeste Mergens was a health and education volunteer in Kenya. When she asked what the girls were doing for feminine hygiene, the answer was that the girls — 500 of them — would sit on cardboard in their rooms, unable to leave, unable to attend school.

In many regions a stigma exists that forces girls to hide when having periods. This meant they would fall behind in schoolwork, often dropping out completely.

Worse, Mergens said, they were “sexually exploited in exchange for a single disposable pad.”

That’s when Days for Girls was born, a nonprofit now in 120 countries, giving a future back to more than a million girls and women.

Mergens experienced harsh poverty herself as a child, and now leads thousands of volunteers in the effort to help “girls go to school and women go to work by ensuring they have the feminine care products they can count on, month after month.”

Women from Roseville, Granite Bay, Rocklin, and surrounding areas planned to get together March 2 not only to hear Mergens speak, but to assemble 1,000 kits for girls in desperate need. Like clockwork, attendees — which can include children and men — will move through work stations where they will compile donated components for kits going to Africa, Asia, Brazil and around the world.

Volunteers from high schools, the American Association of University Women, 4-H, the American River Women’s Club, Vizient, and local churches such as Bayside, the Church of Je-

sus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the First United Methodist Church of Loomis have been cutting and sewing washable, reusable pads and liners for months, preparing for this charitable event.

Karen Wilkes of Granite Bay said that this is “interfaith, or no faith. Everyone can get involved.” And since all the supplies are already donated, attendees just need to show up and enjoy being part of a great cause.

Cool desserts are typically lower in calories than ice cream

pened in August of 2018, Vampire Penguin of Granite Bay offers delicious treats that will melt in your mouth — literally.

Among many sweet and savory treats, Vampire Penguin specializes in “snow,” which is a cross between shaved ice and ice cream, said Shoaib Zafar, co-owner of the Granite Bay location.

“It’s pre-flavored and creamy like ice cream and shaped like shaved ice, but it’s so fine that when you eat it, it just melts in your mouth, so that’s why we call it snow,” he said.

Zafar’s family licensed the business, giving them the ability to bring in other items they want to offer to their customers, as long as they offer what Vampire Penguin’s corporate sells.

“For this particular location, I brought in different desserts,” he said. “For example, we brought Falooda, which is an Indian dessert; and boba tea; for the Asian community. I want to bring in a diversity of cultures. These items are getting popular. We have different customers ordering things they wouldn’t normally get, but they see other cultures enjoying it, so they want to try it and they love it.”

In addition, the Granite Bay location also offers smoothies, macaroons and poke bowls.

Zafar said their smoothies are made with juice and fresh fruit, and there is an option to add boba as well. “We get our macaroons from New York. If you go anywhere, they are usually small and not creamy enough,” Zafar said. “We originally wanted to get them shipped from Paris since that’s where they originally came from, but the cost was too high, so we offer New York macaroons, and they are delicious.”

Some popular snow flavors include strawberry cheesecake, s’mores and dulce de leche, among many others on their extensive menu.

“These three are super popular especially among the newcomers because there is something familiar about strawberry, chocolate and vanilla,” he said. “All of my employees are trained to give an overview to customers, so they know what they are ordering.”

Something unique about Vampire Penguin is they can turn almost any flavor into snow.

“We took a Mexican candy and turned that into snow. We took a Filipino drink called halo-halo and turned that into snow as well,” Zafar said. “We work with corporate to bring different flavors and much less calorie-dense flavors. Our snow is four times healthier than ice cream. For example, about four ounces of ice

cream is about 120 to 150 calories, whereas our 16 ounces of snow is 120 calories. We’re currently working on a new flavor that is about 60 calories with only five grams of sugar for 16 ounces.”

Zafar said his favorite flavor of snow is the peanut butter.

He said since the business is still fairly new, he hasn’t figured out the atmosphere of the shop, but he hopes that one day it will be a community hangout for friends, families and birthday parties.

“My biggest goal is to bring different cultures together at one place to create more diversity because you don’t see that in many places in this area,” he said. “I want to change that. I also want people to come in here and feel comfortable like they are at their home away from home.”

Do-it-yourself estate planning — is it worth it?

Do-It-Yourself estate planning kits are becoming more and more popular these days. All you have to do is pay a couple hundred dollars, download a program, answer some questions, and a few minutes later, you’ve got some fancy legal papers.

But is it really worth it in the long run to save a few bucks on something that could cost your family thousands of dollars and an emotional nightmare in the end?

In almost every do-it-yourself case I have reviewed in my nearly 20 years of experience, I say no, for several reasons.

First of all, these online programs cannot give legal advice as they are not your personal attorney. Part of the reason you go to an attorney is to have the attorney counsel you and guide you as to which type of estate plan is necessary for your particular estate. For these online programs, consulting with one of their attorneys is typically an additional fee.

Keep in mind there is no “one-size-fits-all” cookie cutter estate plan. If your trust is too complicated for your particular estate or not comprehensive enough to handle the vast array of issues effecting your estate, the results can be devastating and costly to the very heirs you meant to protect.

Many times, when I have reviewed do-it-yourself plans, I have found numerous inconsistencies among the documents. The

other big problem I see, is lots of incomplete plans. I’ll read these beautifully drafted documents with missing signatures or dates, missing sections, and some critical documents missing altogether.

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen unfunded trusts with no deeds, or deeds left unrecorded, and no Exhibit A (property description) included. In many cases I find no proof of anything ever being funded into the trust at all.

In my experience, my clients who have chosen the do-it-yourself route in the beginning, almost always end up spending more money than clients that simply hire me from the start. Why? Because, the clients who decide to do it themselves almost always have unanswered questions which require an attorney to answer. So, they call an attorney, who typically must review the documents in order to answer their questions. Finally, upon reviewing their documents, problems are commonly found, requiring corrections. The attorney is then hired to correct those errors.

Now, add in the notary fees of $100-$200 or more and now the costs are significantly higher than if the client would have hired a lawyer from the get-go.

Most attorneys charge a flat fee to set up an estate plan and notary fees are usually included. Whereas, reviewing trusts done by others and revising such documents are usually done hourly and add up quickly.

Trust me, in the end it’s not a short cut or a money saver to do it yourself. In fact, in most cases, quite the opposite is true.

Radishes: The feminine fire bomb Mindy Schiller

When I was a little girl, I thought radishes were spicy little things that only old people (and Peter Rabbit) ate. With good reason, too: The only time I saw them was in iceberg lettuce salads, and the only people who ate them were my grandparents, who somehow, unfathomably, also liked eating raw onions. They also ate cow tongue and chicken neck and fish jelly and ... well, you can imagine that for a young child, they weren’t the best advertisement for radishes. If they liked them, I reasoned, I wasn’t going to be trying them any time soon. Even if they were pretty.

It’s true, my grandparents did have odd tastes in foods — or, at least, according to my American sensibilities. They had both grown up in Poland and spent years starving in concentration camps, so the flavor of food was perhaps less important than the fact that it existed. Still, my grandmother was the best chef I’ve ever known and her raw onions mixed with hand-grated hardboiled egg, olive oil, salt and pepper is proof that Occam’s razor

is, in fact, sharp: The simpler recipes are most likely to be the good ones. (Well, I admit it sounds different in Latin.)

Simple is best: It’s a realization I have come to as an adult, having rediscovered most of the foods I dismissed as a child (though I will never try fish jelly, Bubby; I’m sorry). Radishes are the best example of this I know. On their own, they are “spicy little things.” Or maybe “sassy” is the right word. They come in flamboyant magenta, lacy light rose, and gradients of pink that slip into white. in short, they could stand in for the lingerie in a Victoria’s Secret catalog. But it’s when they’re paired with a partner that they really come alive, and that partner is the most mundane of all bedfellows: Salt.

Yes, I mean it: The humble saltshaker is this dame’s arm candy.

Slice a few radishes into a bowl and sprinkle them with salt, wait a few minutes for the juices to come out of hiding and suddenly that little pink bell is more like a carillon. You can do more with them, obviously — a few drops of olive oil and a sliced cucumber never hurt anyone — and the recipes below will. But the point here is this: you don’t have to. Radishes with salt are a revelation, like learning that your mother was actually the ambassador of Canada before she had you. So yes, try the recipes below — or don’t.

But do try some radishes with salt.

When-you’re-makingdinner-but-it’s-notready-yet radish salad This is what I make when I’m cooking dinner, it’s taking too long, I don’t want to ruin my appetite, but I’m so hungry I could eat my arm. You can make it in between stirring a pot or checking on the potatoes.

INGREDIENTS:

1 bunch radishes (any kind will work, and don’t forget the daikon. He’s not pretty, but he’ll get the job done) 1 small cucumber (Persian is best) sea salt olive oil lemon juice a soft cheese like feta, goat or queso fresco

sea salt fresh herbs, like tarragon arugula INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut the loaf into three or four chunks, depending on how large you want your pieces to be. This works well as an hors d’oeuvre, too, so you may opt for bite-size.

Then cut the chunks in half lengthwise.

Slice the radishes thinly and sprinkle with salt. Mix the anchovy paste into the butter and slather it on the bread. Sprinkle salt onto the bread and top with radish slices.

Sprinkle chopped herbs and arugula on top and open wide.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Slice the root vegetables. Slices should be about ¼-inch wide or narrower. Place them in the jar, along with the peppercorns, garlic, mustard seed, and any other flavorants. In a saucepan, bring the water, vinegar, salt and sugar to boil. When the sugar and salt are all dissolved, turn off the flame. This is your pickling brine. Pour brine into your jar and seal the lid. When the jar has cooled, place it in the fridge. The pickles will be ready as early as a few hours later, and will be perfect 24 hours later. Note that if you use beets in this, the liquid and radishes will turn pink. If you’re like me and eat with your eyes, then this is a plus.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Thinly slice the radishes and cucumbers into a bowl. Drizzle on some olive oil and lemon juice. Sprinkle with salt and cheese and go turn your potatoes. When you’re finished, the radishes will be ready and you can munch on them while you’re setting the table.

Roasted radishes with sautéed greens Quick-pickled radishes (makes a half-gallon Mason jar’s worth of pickles) This is a great accompaniment to any salad, taco, or sandwich. It’s also easy and fast, requiring none of the technique that scares people away from traditional pickling. I make a large jar of it, because it will keep in the fridge for up to a month.

Radish and butter open-face sandwiches I know, this sounds odd. But when you eat it, you’ll thank me. Actually, you’ll thank Mark Bittman, because it’s his recipe I’m riffing on. The key is the pillowy bread, so buy it fresh.

INGREDIENTS:

1 bunch radishes 1 loaf of French bread, fresh butter (6 tablespoons, give or take), room temperature anchovy paste (1/2 teaspoon)

INGREDIENTS:

1 bunch radishes 1 daikon optional: half of a beet, carrot, or other root vegetable 2 cups water 2 cups white vinegar 4 teaspoons sea salt 4 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon peppercorns 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed 2 cloves peeled garlic optional: bay leaf, anise star, chili pepper, dill 1 half-gallon mason jar, or multiple smaller ones

This recipe makes use of the radish greens, too. Just be sure to wash them well.

INGREDIENTS:

3 bunches radishes 1 clove garlic 1 teaspoon soy sauce salt and pepper, to taste 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided Instructions: Turn oven to 450 degrees. Trim the greens off your radishes. Place the radishes in a bowl and save the greens. If the radishes are large, cut them in half. Sprinkle the radishes with 2 tablespoon olive and salt and mix to coat. Place radishes on sheet pan and roast for about 15 minutes, or until they’re browned. Toss them once about halfway through. Wash the greens thoroughly. They do have grit, so this is essential. Peel and mince the garlic. In a frying pan, add the remaining olive oil and turn it to medium heat. Add the greens and let sauté for a minute, then add the garlic. At the last minute, toss in the soy sauce and let reduce.

Remove from pan and serve immediately, alongside the radishes.

n the 1989 movie, “Field of Dreams,” the character Kevin Costner plays has a vision of building a baseball field in the middle of an Iowan corn field. Costner tells everyone, “If you build it, he will come.”

This is sort of what Roseville resident Dave Aton is planning as well. Aton believes that 1,600 high school students will attend a Christian high school that is planned near West Roseville in Placer County.

“In November of 2015 I had a vision that this is what God wants to do,” Aton said. “I shared with pastor, Gil Stiglitz, it was put on my heart to build a large, co-ed Christian high school in Placer County. He accompanied me on a visit to Valley Christian High School in San Jose, which I discovered was exactly the school I envisioned and hoped would be built in Placer County. I also visited Valor Christian High School in Highland Park, Colorado, which has a similar demographic to Placer County.”

While a name for the school has not yet been selected, the Placer Christian School Association, a nonprofit organization, was formed in 2016. Board members include Dave Aton, Ariana and Keith Coburn, Fermin Gonzales, JR, CPA, D. Michael McGuire, M.A., who was a former principal of Granite Bay High School and Vance Pascua. The mission of this association is to “build and establish a Christian high school providing faith-based excellence in education in our community.”

While he is not a member of the board, Granite Bay resident Dave Cook of Cook Development Consulting Services has also been extremely involved with plans for the high school. Cook, with his extensive experience in Placer County identified and helped determine the site for the school. This land was secured through an option-to-purchase for approximately $12 million and is located on the southwestern edge of Roseville on 52 acres bordered by Walerga and Baseline roads. The option agreement runs through the third quarter of 2020, which Aton said should allow enough time to complete the necessary studies and environmental reports and approvals required for Placer County. The first classes are hoped to begin fall, 2022.

“This is a fascinating project,” Cook said. “It’s an incredible venture and will add so much to the Placer community. Of the six sites I had identified, this one was our first choice. It has adequate acreage to satisfy Dave’s vision, it is centrally located in Western Placer County and has good access to major roads.

This project just makes sense with the amount of growth in Placer County and the demographics of the area.”

“We have such a high quality of life in Western Placer County,” Aton added. “There is strong economic and demographic growth, a healthy business climate and well-developed infrastructure. Yet what has been missing is a place for those families who seek to support and educate their high school children in a Christian setting. This shortcoming has implications not only for today’s families, but for the region’s future leadership as well.”

Aton said plans for the Christian high school include a faith-based element and will feature high caliber professionals and breadth of programs he said is not offered currently in

any public school. Williams + Paddon Architects and Planners have been engaged to design the campus, including an academic building that will house classrooms for English, writing, Bible studies, world languages, history, business and electives.

In addition, the high school’s STEM building, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math, will feature classrooms and chemistry, biology and robotics labs.

For those students interested in the arts, an Arts Conservatory will include space for music, visual arts, theater, theater design and technology, dance arts and media studies. Musical arts facilities include rehearsal halls and a recording studio and theater, among other amenities.

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate several gyms and training rooms, a stadium for track and football, soccer, baseball and softball fields as well as tennis courts and full aquatic sports facilities.

“What we are planning is a regional high school that will attract students from throughout several counties,” Aton said.

“This school is intended to be a magnet for those high school students and their families who are looking for high-quality educational excellence and instructors. We plan to reach these kids in a way that is not possible in public high schools today. This is a legacy project that extends far beyond any one church. It’s a chance to do something for God that is beyond us all today.”

Young Eagles program launches young ones toward aviation careers

mong the more than 50,000 volunteers internationally donating their time and aircraft to the effort of helping youth learn about aviation is Granite Bay resident and pilot Bruce Estes.

The Young Eagles Program was unveiled by the Experimental Aircraft Association in July 1992 and has now flown more than 2 million youth, according to association spokesman Dick Knapinski. Estes flies out of the Lincoln airport.

Experimental Aircraft Association is a worldwide organization with more than 200,000 members who enjoy recreational flight. The program’s goal is to allow youth to experience positive activities and discover what’s possible in aviation, according to Knapinski.

“Young Eagles is where our members volunteer their time to fly kids 8 to 17 and introduce them to aviation,” Knapinski said.

“There are young pilots right now who that had their start in the Young Eagle program themselves.”

“This gives young people an opportunity how airplanes work.

The kids come out and learn about flight safety, how to check a plane preflight and so forth,” Knapinski said. “It really gives them an idea of what it’s like to be in the cockpit.”

“We have more than 900 chapters across the country and we put on regional flight rallies for kids who would like to go flying.

I don’t know what’s more fun: the kids who are flying or us pilot instructors who are flying them,” Knapinski said. “That as a pilot is the most gratifying part of the program. To know that one of those kids will go on to be an airline pilot, may go into the military and fly for the military is great. We fully expect one day that one of our Young Eagles will go on to become an American astronaut.”

It is free for parents to sign their children up to fly.

“Since I was a little kid, I built model airplanes with my dad,” Estes said. “I have been flying since the year 2000, I currently own two airplanes and have just sold another that I built myself.”

“I starting flying Young Eagles somewhere around 2005 or 2006,” Estes said. “We live, breath, eat, drink and sleep aviation.

We have the freedom to fly and live that life, so we have to share that joy too. In my airplane, we load up one to three kids, fly them around for about 20 minutes and then fly back around and pick

up the next set of kids. On some days, we start at about 8 a.m. and don’t finish up around 12 p.m.”

Estes said that right now is the most opportunistic time to be a pilot.

“With baby boomers now retiring, nearly every market for pilots is experiencing a severe shortage in pilots,” Estes said.

It’s not too late for New Year’s resolutions Debra Skelton

Here are 7 you can keep

RESOLUTION 4: SWAP ONE MEAL By swapping out one of your daily meals for a one or two scoop protein shake you’ll save yourself a few hundred calories each day while providing your muscles with much needed protein.

Most of my clients choose to make this swap for breakfast, since it’s so convenience to shake up some protein powder and water to drink on-the-go as you race out the door to start your day. If you only choose to make one resolution this year make it this one — you’ll be astounded at the quick results this simple daily swap will deliver.

Do you feel reluctant to create New Year’s resolutions? After years of failed resolutions past, I don’t blame you. However, if you pick the right resolutions (and it’s not to late), you’ll face the New Year head on, ready to make good on your big plans all the way to Dec. 31.

What kind of resolutions will you actually keep this year? Good question. Here are seven resolutions that you can keep and that will help you achieve big strides toward your fitness goals:

RESOLUTION 5: PUSH YOUR BODY

RESOLUTION 1: GET FISHY

RESOLUTION 6: DOWN MORE H2O

Giving your health a boost doesn’t have to take an incredible amount of time. With this resolution, it doesn’t even take will power. All it takes is modifying your grocery list by buying fish on occasion. Enjoy fish for dinner once a week, and you’ll protect your heart from disease and increase your chances for a longer life. Go with salmon, trout, flounder, or tuna.

Your body is primarily made up of water. Keep it that way by skipping soda and sipping on water all day long. A great way to make strides toward your watery goal is to fill up the biggest water bottle you can find and go at it. Preferably, you can drink from something that holds 2.2 liters (9 cups), as all you’ll need is a single fill up in the morning to stay hydrated all day long.

RESOLUTION 2: LATHER UP

RESOLUTION 7: STRETCH EVERY DAY

You want your skin to look young and healthy, so do something about it. Keep a bottle of sunscreen on your counter. When getting ready for your day, make it part of your routine to spread some sun-shielding lotion on your face, arms, and neck. It’ll save your skin so it’ll look its best in years to come and prevent skin cancer.

One of the best ways to avoid injury, as we age, is to take a few minutes to stretch daily. This is most effectively done after you have warmed up and before you begin the intense portion of your routine. By taking the best care of your muscles, with stretching, you’ll avoid taking time off for injury recovery and will be able to accomplish your goals quicker.

There you have it, seven realistic resolutions to help make 2019 your best year yet.

RESOLUTION 3: SWEAT IN THE A.M. In today’s world, it can be difficult to find the time to exercise.

One way to increase your odds for exercising each day is to knock it out first thing in the morning. This year, resolve to exercise right after waking up. Adjust your wake up time to accommodate your morning sweat session.

Know that half marathon you’ve been considering? Mountain climbing? This is the year you train properly for whatever your challenge you are considering. Be the best you can be. Find someone with the same goal, make a plan to reach the goal, and get started. Once you complete your first goal and see that it wasn’t as impossible as you once thought, you may just find yourself setting even bigger goals for next year.
