he BNP Paribas Open, to be held March 4-17 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, has released its entry lists today, which are highlighted by all of the top 75 ranked singles players on the WTA and ATP Tour.

Ten former singles champions will descend on the desert in 2019: Juan Martín Del Potro (2018); Naomi Osaka (2018); Simona Halep (2015); Novak Djokovic (2008, 2011, 2014-2016); Roger Federer (2004-2006, 2012, 2017); Rafael Nadal (2007, 2009, 2013); Serena Williams (1999; 2001); Maria Sharapova (2006, 2013); Victoria Azarenka (2012, 2016); and Caroline Wozniacki (2011).

Defending champion Del Potro returns to the desert where last year the current World No. 5 overcame Federer in an epic three-set

final to claim his first Masters 1000 title. Osaka, the defending women’s champion, lost just one set en route to the title last year.

The current World No. 4 claimed the US Open title in August and is currently in the running for the World No. 1 spot as she competes at the Australian Open.

The current WTA World No. 1 Halep, who won her first major title at the 2018 French Open, will seek her second title in the desert, while ATP Tour World No. 1 Djokovic, who won Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018 to bring his major total up to 14, eyes a record-setting sixth title.

Federer, the 20-time major winner, World No. 3 and 2018 Australian Open champion, also returns to Indian Wells with a sixth title in sight along with the potential

to add to his 62 career match wins in the desert, the most in BNP Paribas Open history. Nadal, the 17-time major winner, World No. 2 and 2018 French Open champion, makes his much-anticipated return after missing the 2018 tournament and will be seeking his fourth crown in Indian Wells.

They will be joined by 23-time major singles champion and twotime BNP Paribas Open champion Serena Williams, who reached the finals at both Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018.

Two other two-time champions, Sharapova and Azarenka, and 2011 champion and World No. 3 Wozniacki will also be part of the exceptional fields in Indian Wells. With all the top ranked players from both the ATP Tour and WTA entered into the event,

there will also be a strong contingent of contenders looking to raise the trophy for the first time including two players still in the running for the WTA No. 1 ranking at the Australian Open – World No. 6 Petra Kvitova and World No. 8 Karolina Pliskova.

In addition, major singles champions (not mentioned above) including Venus Williams; World No. 2 Angelique Kerber; Stan Wawrinka; Garbine Muguruza; World No. 5 Sloane Stephens; World No. 7 Marin Cilic; Jelena Ostapenko; and Sam Stosur will all vie for their first BNP Paribas Open title.

Four Americans to watch for in the desert are Danielle Collins, who is into her first Grand Slam semifinal; Frances Tiafoe, who reached the quarterfinals in Melbourne; ATP Tour World No. 10 John Isner; and top 20 ranked Madison Keys. The will be joined by top 10 ranked stars on the ATP Tour – World No. 4 Alexander Zverev, World No. 6 Kevin Anderson, World No. 8 Dominic Thiem, World No. 9 Kei Nishikori; and WTA – World No. 7 Elina Svitolina, World No. 9 Kiki Bertens and World No. 10 Daria Kasatkina.

The remaining spots in the draws will be filled by the winners of the Qualifying Tournament (March 4-6), the top two American women and men with the most points in the Oracle Challenger Series, as well as wild cards, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Some things just break your heart ... I was sitting at a traffic light when I saw one of my neighbors go into a pawn shop carrying a bag. This was worrisome, and I pulled into the parking lot across the street to watch. Sure enough, she came out empty-handed ... and sure enough, she pulled out into traffic and headed for the grocery store. When I spotted her later as she headed for the checkout line, there wasn’t much in her basket.

I pulled into the pawn shop on my way home. The owner was hesitant to disclose any information, but yes, my neighbor had brought in three items to pawn, and yes, he knew why. She was out of money and her Social Security wasn’t due for two weeks.

When he told me what she’d pawned, my heart broke.

From there I went to the food bank where they loaded up two bags of food once I told them what I was doing. With a little subterfuge, the groceries were delivered anonymously to my neighbor.

If you’re ever in a position where you don’t have enough food, there are ways to get help.

Church pantries (even if you’re not a member), a food bank and your local senior center are good places to start.

14th Annual Desert Garden Tour in Palm Springs The 14th annual Desert Garden Tour presented by the Desert Horticultural Society of the Coachella Valley will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17.

“The goal of the tour is to introduce Society and community members to the myriad lowwater and habitat-friendly garden ideas available to our desert gardeners,” says Tracy Merrigan, Society president. “You can take ideas from these gardens that will add color and beauty and conserve water.”

The self-guided walks through Palm Springs gardens showcase a variety of landscapes and gardens, large and small. Created by homeowners and design professionals, these gardens include hillside terraces, courtyards, estate planting islands, personal patios and gorgeous views.

Pioneertown Mountains Preserve Quiet and wild, the Pioneertown Mountains Preserve covers 25,500 acres owned by The Wildlands Conservancy. It is open to the public from sunrise to sunset for hiking. There is a shade structure for picnic lunches, and restrooms, but most of the preserve is wildlands. Visitors are cautioned to be aware that they are alone in the desert. • When someone mentions the band ZZ Top, you probably think of a group of musicians with long beards. They don’t all have beards, though; the drummer is clean-shaven as a matter of safety (imagine being in the middle of a drum solo and getting a stick caught in a long beard -- ouch!).

Interestingly, the unbearded drummer’s name is Frank Beard.

• If you’re like most people, you’ve probably never encountered a tziganologist. That is, unless you consort with those who study Hungarian gypsies.

• Those who study such things say that the immortal bard, William Shakespeare, used a grand total of 17,677 words in his works. (That must have been a tedious calculation.) They also say that fully one-tenth of those words had never been used in writing before.

• Unless you were around on April 17, 1964, you may not be aware of the hullabaloo caused by the introduction of the Ford Mustang. In Seattle, a truck driver was so distracted by a display of new Mustangs that he crashed his cement truck through the window of the dealership. In Chicago, so many people were trying to crowd into the cars in a showroom that the dealer had to lock all the vehicle doors. A dealer in New Jersey had only one Mustang, so he auctioned it off. The winner of the auction insisted on sleeping in his new car that night, just to make sure nobody else got it before his check cleared.

Script2Stage2Screen Presents “Breakable”

Grief over a serious loss is a part of life—a painful, unfortunate part of life. That stirring subject is what Script2Stage2Screen (S2S2S) will present in its March 2019 staged readings of “Breakable,” by Kansas City playwright Vicki Vodrey.

“So much of life is breakable— relationships, trust, people and hearts. How we mend those breaks is the challenge,” said Artistic Director Gina Bikales. “Vodrey masterfully explores this strong subject with grace and sensitivity.”

The theatrical group – celebrating its tenth anniversary -- showcases new plays. Performances of “Breakable” are Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. All S2S2S staged readings take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Desert, 72425 Via Vail, Rancho Mirage.

S2S2S has staged other Vodrey plays, including “Hanky Panky,” a dark comedy about the death of a family’s patriarch; and “The Frowning Vajayjays of Shady Pines,” a comedy about how female friends in a nursing home cope when a new roommate arrives.

About the playwright: In August 2017, Desert Theatre League (DTL) nominated Vodrey’s play, The Exit Strategy Club, for outstanding new script after being produced as a staged reading by S2S2S. In January 2017, Thank You Notes: Headed To Heaven W/ Flat Jimmy Fallon, was produced by Black Coffee Productions in New York City’s inaugural Fresh Grind Festival and the Kansas City (KC) Fringe Festival.

Her one-act play, Platter Tudes, was part of the inaugural William Inge Play Lab, celebrating the 35th year of the William Inge Theatre Festival. Just Between Friends was performed during S2S2S’s 2017 season. In 2015, Vodrey’s dark comedy, Hard Day’s Night, was selected for the New York International Fringe Festival, where it played to full and sold out houses. 18th Annual Native FilmFest: Showcasing exceptional Native cinema and respect for tradition Celebrating its 18th year, Native FilmFest is one of the nation’s most highly regarded festivals of its kind. The two-day festival features the best in films by, about and starring Native Americans and other Indigenous peoples, showcasing features, shorts and documentaries. Many of the film screenings are followed by receptions with special guests and interactive panel discussions with the most prestigious and innovative Native cinematic artists.

Opening night is celebrated with a meet-and-greet and redcarpet arrivals. The short film “Ka Piko” (9 minutes) will be screened, followed by the feature film “Words From a Bear” (85 minutes) which examines the enigmatic life and mind of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Navarro Scott Momaday, one of Native America’s most celebrated authors of poetry and prose. APPLE PEANUT BUTTER ON CINNAMON RAISIN BREAD When sliced apples are exposed to air they start to turn brown from oxidation. Dip the apples in a mixture of water and a fresh lemon juice to keep them beautifully crisp.

• 1/2 cup organic peanut butter • 2 tablespoons organic honey • 8 slices whole-grain cinnamon raisin bread • 1 small organic apple unpeeled or peeled, cored and sliced or shredded In a small bowl, mix together the peanut butter and honey. Spread about 2 tablespoons of the mixture onto one side of each slice of 4 pieces of the bread. Place an equal amount of the sliced or shredded apple on top of the peanut butter. Place the remaining slice of bread on top of the apple to make a sandwich. Serve immediately or wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

Makes 4 sandwiches.

GRILLED PB&J • 3 teaspoons butter, softened • 4 slices whole-wheat white bread • 2 teaspoons organic peanut butter • 4 teaspoons, any flavor, fruit jelly

1. If using a toaster oven, heat the oven to 450 F. Spread a teaspoon of the butter on one side of two slices of the bread. Spread the peanut butter and then the jelly on the remaining two slices of the bread. Top with the buttered slice of bread, so that peanut butter and jelly are in the middle.

2. If using a skillet, melt the remaining teaspoon of butter on high heat. Place the unbuttered slice of the bread down in the skillet. Cook for 4 minutes, and then turn and cook the bread on the buttered side until golden brown and heated through.

3. If using a toaster oven, butter one slice of bread and spread the peanut butter and jelly on the other. Toast the slices and then place one slice on top of the other to make a sandwich. Makes 2 sandwiches.
