For newcomers to Wickenburg or seasoned visitors, the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center can answer nearly anything a traveler wants to know about the town and surrounding area. Located at 216 N. Frontier Street, in the heart of historic downtown, the Visitor Center is housed in the restored Santa Fe Railroad Depot. Built in 1895, the depot’s red roof and SUR[LPLW\ WR WKH WUDFNV PDNH LW HDV\ WR ÀQG Step inside through the old screen door, and the smiling faces behind the counter will answer all questions. Maps, shopping guides, lists of restaurants, local business directories and brochures for numerous things to do in the area are free for the taking. Whether in town for the afternoon or for the winter, the information and options will be sure to KHOS ÀOO \RXU WLPH The Visitor Center is open seven days a week, October through May. On week-

days Chamber of Commerce activities are in full swing with volunteers and staff to greet visitors and answer questions. The YROXQWHHU GHVN LV ÀOOHG HYHU\ GD\ H[FHSW holidays) by a collective force of about 15 regular helpers, which means visitors are welcomed seven days a week for most of the year. Many of the volunteers have spent much or all of their lives in Wickenburg and can share a wealth of information with newcomers. Just a few steps from the Visitor Center sits the restored 1900 Series Southern PaFLÀF 'URYHU &DERRVH KRRNHG WR WKH $ 7 and Santa Fe Railroad Engine No. 761, built in 1890. The train is open for tours on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through the winter season. In addition to housing interesting, historical artifacts, the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center is also RQ WKH LQIRUPDWLRQ VXSHUKLJKZD\ $OPRVW everything housed inside the depot can be

Since its original restoration 30 years ago, the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce has maintained the depot. Recently, the chamber board of directors launched a major fundraising campaign to further repair, renovate and remodel the depot, making more room for the bustling visitor FHQWHU DQG PRYLQJ DGPLQLVWUDWLYH RIÀFHV into an area previously used for storage. Historic Kay El Bar reopens as guest ranch By Kevin Cloe Sun Correspondent
W
ith a strong national economy back, so is the Kay El Bar Guest Ranch in Wickenburg. Owner Joe Beattie and his wife Teri, who purchased the 100-acre ranch in 2007, have decided to revive the historic guest ranch after using it as a private ranch for the past six years. Located on Rincon Road on the northwest side of Wickenburg, the Kay El Bar was created as a working cattle ranch in the late 1800s and served as a guest ranch from 1926 to 2008 (83 years) before the national economy took a dive. That convinced the latest of many different owners (including award-winning actor Val Kilmer’s parents) to shut down the public use of the facility and maintain it as a private ranch until the economy recovered. “We bought it just before the economy went down,� Joe Beattie explained. “We ran it as a guest ranch for four years and then closed it.�

During that time, the Beatties made numerous improvements to the facilities without sacrificing the western authenticity that made it so popular with its guests. “It’s really exciting,� Beattie said in announcing the reopening of the ranch in November 2018. “People really care about this place. We were getting emails every year from former guests who were asking when we were going to reopen.� Kay El Bar is already taking reservations for the coming winter season, and Beattie reported that at least a half dozen people have already booked time at the ranch, which will accommodate as many as 28 guests at a time from Nov. 11 through May. He said his staff continued to maintain a long list of former guests and stayed in contact with them my email. Beattie, who owns and operates a steel distribution company while residing in Brea, Calif., brought his family to the Kay El Bar as guests on his birthday every year for five years before he and his wife decided to purchase the ranch from John and Nancy Loftis. “I love western history,� he said, recall-

ing how his father would take his family to various western venues while they lived in California. That led to his decision to find a guest ranch to visit for his birthday celebrations. California didn’t provide the kind of ranch he wanted to visit, and he preferred a location that was driving distance from his home. “Wickenburg was the closest,� he explained, emphasizing that Kay El Bar offered the western authenticity while being small enough that guests helped create a family atmosphere. “We fell in love with it. When we left every year, our young kids cried all the way home.� His children are now grown and married, and the Beatties are now grandparents. Kay El Bar offers morning, afternoon and all-day horseback rides, dining in the hacienda-style dining room and cowboy cookouts under the clear desert night sky, entertainment in songs and cowboy poetry, and a swimming pool and Jacuzzi. The Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts in Wickenburg schedules a wide variety of live performances in the intimate, 600-seat venue. An adjoining bar and lounge opens to a deck overlooking the original swimming pool, fed by the spring. Granite Mountain Hotshot State Park On June 30, 2013, the lightningcaused Yarnell Hill Fire raged out of control, burned into the town of Yarnell, and destroyed 129 structures. Tragically, 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots were killed west of town durLQJ WKH PXOWL DJHQF\ ÀJKW 7KRVH men from the Prescott area have been honored and commemorated in many ways by their communities and the town of Yarnell. The state of Arizona joined in that remembrance with the 2017 opening of the Granite Mountain Hotshots State Park.
The park includes a trail leading from Highway 89 up and over the granite boulders of Yarnell Hill to an observation deck where the actual fatality site can be seen. The hike from the parking area to the observation deck is 2.85 miles. Every 600 feet, a polished granite memorial plaque shares a story and photo of one of the 19 hotshots. The climb is steep and rocky and gains 1,200 feet in elevation with 5% to 8% grades and more than 200 stairs carved in the boulGHU ÀHOGV ,QWHUSUHWLYH VLJQV DQG EHQFKHV are found along the way. At the 2.85-mile mark, hikers stop and
read the story of the Yarnell Hill Fire and study the timeline to learn how the wildÀUH ZKLFK KDG EHHQ EXUQLQJ QRUWKZDUG in the direction of Peeples Valley, suddenly changed direction and overtook part of Yarnell as well as the Granite Mountain Hotshots. Jeff Pinardi, the veteran of the three superintendents, has worked on golf courses for the past 42 years and uses his experience to oversee the work of a small crew at Wickenburg Country Club for the past six years. With the help of two full-time and three parttime employees, Pinardi is reluctant to admit he has been able to produce impressive fairways and greens with a staff a fraction of the size of other 18-hole courses. ´, WHOO WKHP ZH QHHG WR PDNH WKH FRXUVH ORRN like we have a crew of 12 working on it,� he said. Big Wick was designed and maintained seven years before the Wickenburg Ranch residential development on the northwest end of town began. That development, with an eventual planned spread of 3,000 homes, began in 2015 and currently has about 300 homes constructed and occupied there. Golf Advisor, well-known for its course ratings and reviews, named Wickenburg Ranch and Golf Club (managed by Troon out of Scottsdale) as one of the best golf courses in the United States. General meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m., September - May. Guests are welcome to attend. The art center, located at 188 S. Tegner St., is home to two galleries, open studio, classes and workshops in many areas of art, clay and writing. Tour the Hassayampa River Preserve The Hassayampa River, loosely translated as “upside-down river�, is a jewel of the Sonoran Desert that disappears and reappears many times throughout its 100-mile length. About a 5-mile stretch of the river’s perennial surface flow and its surrounding riparian ecosystem are protected at the Hassayampa River Preserve a few miles south of Wickenburg. The Preserve was created in 1987 by The Nature Conservancy to protect one of the rarest ecosystems in Arizona, the cottonwood-willow riparian forest type. In April 2017, the Conservancy donated the Preserve to the Maricopa County Parks & Recreation Department under a conservation easement as part of the larger plans for the proposed Vulture Mountains Recreation Area. The County Parks have since been implementing renovations and site improvements to the Preserve to enhance the visitor experience, while conserving the special natural and historic resources on the property. The Preserve offers 3 miles of hiking trails that meander through this lush desert oasis, allowing visitors to experience the tranquility of the rambling river and the vibrant natural life that it supports. The Preserve also features the spring-fed Palm Lake and spectacular views from a desert hill overlooking the river corridor and surrounding mountains. The Preserve’s diverse wildlife includes gray fox, ringtail, javelina, lowland leopard frog, and a plethora of colorful dragonflies and butterflies. It is one of the state’s birding hotspots with over 290 bird species recorded, including gray and red-shouldered hawks, yellow-billed

The Visitor Center occupies a historic building dating to 1865 and features museum displays highlighting the Preserve’s historical and natural features. A native plant garden outside the visitor center provides a beautiful array of wildflowers throughout the seasons. Ranger-led nature walks and monthly programs are offered at no additional charge, with guest presenters giving talks and guided walks covering a variety of topics. The Nature Rangers youth program (ages 7-12) meets once a month to give kids an opportunity to learn about their local environment through fun and educational activities. Schools and private groups can also request guided programs. Several volunteer opportunities are available, as well! To register for a program or inquire about booking a private tour, call the Visitor Center at 928-684-2772. The Preserve is open from Wednesday-Sundays (closed Monday-Tuesdays), with summer hours of 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. from mid-May - mid-October, and winter hours from 8 a.m. -5 p.m. from midOctober - mid-May. Trails close 30 minutes prior to closing time. Entry is $5 per adult (ages 13 and up), children 12 and under are free. Maricopa County Parks annual passes are honored. Pets, swimming, fishing and hunting are not allowed at the Preserve. Two picnic areas are available, the Visitor Center’s gift shop has snacks and drinks for sale, and a water bottle filling station is available at the restroom building. The half-mile long Palm Lake Trail is a barrier-free gravel loop and the restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Sophie’s Flat offers approximately 7 miles of loop and connector trails fit for hikers and horses. Bureau of Land Management has marked and mapped the trails. Local groups help maintain the trails through fundraisers and grant writing. The trailhead offers ample parking for horse trailers, interpretive signage, maps and a restroom. It does not offer water for horses or hikers. The trails meander through classic Sonoran Desert landscape with dramatic desert and mountain vistas stretching in every direction. The elevation is approximately 2,500 feet, and the estimated loop hike time is three hours. The Sophie’s Flat trail head is only about five miles northeast of Wickenburg – about a 10-minute drive. To get there from US 60 in Wickenburg, turn north on El Recreo Drive (the road between Subway and La Siesta Plaza, just east of the Hassayampa River). Continue past the rodeo grounds and beyond the end of the pavement. The dirt road winds through a wash and soon comes to a fork with Blue Tank Road to the left. Take Blue Tank Road for 1.4 miles. Look for the parking area on the right hand side of the road. A portion of the trail system has been improved for mountain biking. Consult the map at the trail head for more information.
