nce you’ve tasted Crack’d Toffee Company’s treats, the way it got its name is self-explanatory. Cherlene and Alex Wright had been making toffee for more than 15 years to give away at Christmas time, but when Cherlene was forced into retirement after getting hurt at work, the idea to make it a small business ignited. “We got the original recipe from a friend of ours – it was her family’s recipe. We changed the ratios and how we treated some of the ingredients, and eventually her family started making it the way we did because they liked it better,” she said. “I worked as probation officer for 18 years, and San Mateo County for 22 years total. I was medically retired out and was not happy with that decision. I was not leaving the house much and not doing well about it.” One day, Alex came home and told Cherlene, “I don’t care what you do; I don’t care if you volunteer somewhere, get a job or start a business, but you have to leave the house. Clean pajamas is not the same as getting dressed and the dog is tired of you interfering with nap time. You have to leave the house.” “He kept nudging me. Eventually I decided to start a business with the toffee,” Cherlene said. “We called our friend and asked what they thought. She said, ‘Do I get some?’ I said, ‘Sure.’ She talked with her family and they

When asked what their favorite thing about their business was, Cherlene said there are three different things. “On a personal level, I had always been someone who empathized with people who experienced major depression, and I was lucky enough to be someone who never experienced that. For me, personally, it pulled me out of a really deep hole,” she said. “On a social level, moving to a brand new area, where you don’t know anyone, having a small business gives you an immediate topic of conversation to talk to people who aren’t your neighbor.” Alex said his favorite thing is the look on people’s face when they taste it. “From my perspective, there’s something about when we go out to do events, and you hand someone a bite of toffee and they taste it for the first time. They get that smile — that’s fantastic,” he said. “That’s why, for me at least. Usually CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9
were good with it.” In March of 2016, the Wrights went straight to work on their toffee company. The couple, who resided in San Mateo until December of 2017, found a shared kitchen space that helped small food businesses get started. “We were there trying to make a product; figure out a process, go through all the state regulations and establish our business,” Alex said. “The number of mistakes we didn’t make because we learned from them was amazing. We weren’t sorry to move, but we’re sorry we lost that environment because it was really amazing.” The couple moved to El Dorado Hills for the community-feel they missed growing up in the Bay Area. Crack’d Toffee Company has a variety of delicious flavors, including white chocolate, dark chocolate, original English, premium dark roast, as well as vegan dark toffee. “We do some less traditional flavors. A new one we’re working on is a dark chocolate with dark Hawaiian roasted coffee. I’ve experimented with white chocolate toffee with peppermint on top,” she said. “I’ve been thinking of adding a cinnamon/vanilla component in. We both like tiki stuff, and I’d like to add a tiki spice flavor to the toffee.” Crack’s Toffee Company can be found in various retailers around the region, including the Amador Vintage Market in Plymouth, Draeger’s Market in San Mateo, Dry Diggings Distillery in El Dorado Hills, Key Market in Redwood City, and more. “We don’t ever want to be one of those items that can be found everywhere you go, so you won’t see us everywhere,” Alex said. “We want it to be special when you find it. The beauty of being a small business is we can be very selective about where we want to be.”
when someone tastes it they want to buy some, but it’s more about that look when they taste it.” Something unique about Crack’d Toffee Coffee is the Wrights donate 10 percent of their profits every quarter to a different nonprofit. “The second quarter of each year will always go to a different autism nonprofit. Our friend who the recipe came from has a young son who is autistic and it’s sort of an honor of the history of the recipe,” Cherlene said. She mentioned the community service aspect is another reason she loves her company. “Starting a business enables us to continue doing something that we’ve always done, which is donating to local charities and supporting things we believe in,” she said. “It didn’t make sense to start a business and not build a philanthropy component from the beginning.” This ma-and-pa company is unique in many ways, all starting with the first bite. “It’s a taste you haven’t had before,” Alex said. “Everyone can make cupcakes, but not everyone makes them the same.” ✶

BAR & BISTRO
Bacchus House Wine Bar & Bistro
Named after the mythological god of wine, harvest, partying and fun, Bacchus House Wine Bar & Bistro is unlike any restaurant in the area. If you’re looking for an intimate setting in WHERE: 1004 E. BIDWELL ST., B200 CONTACT: 916-984-7500, a local restaurant, this place is perfect. Bacchushousebistro.com After being an event caterer for nearly 30 years, Eric Adams decided it was time to open a restaurant where his guests could experience fine dining and a fun experience. With co-owner and five-star Chef Victor Octavio in the kitchen, the two opened Bacchus House only five years ago, and since has been a local favorite. Decorated to the nines, Adams wanted to incorporate partying and fun into the restaurant décor. “We’re a little avant-garde, a little over the top, and a little whimsical, all while encompassing fine dining, wrapped up in a fun bow no matter what season it is,” Adams said. At Bacchus House, you don’t just get a feast for the eyes, but a feast as well. “We’re a new American restaurant,” Adams said. “We’re a fine dining restaurant, but there’s no stuffiness when you come into Bacchus House. We’re a fun restaurant; we love to have a good time. Come on down and have some fun with us while enjoying a great meal.”
2. BACK BISTRO Back Bistro

Backbistro.com As far as romantic dining on Valentine’s Day, this place is sure to please. Back Bistro is new and improved, with new menu items, a cocktail program, large happy hour and a 30-person bar top are just a few new things to look forward to when dining at Back Bistro. “We wanted to create more of a nice vibe, but not a stuffy vibe,” Jeff said. “We wanted it to be casual enough that you can come in here after a movie in shorts and a T-shirt for some good food. Our prices aren’t outrageous; there is no pretension — just a comfortable place.” Jeff said they call Back Bistro causal-fine dining because you can come in a suit for a business dinner and have a three-course dinner with a $200 bottle of wine or come with friends for happy hour and have a $5 glass of wine, a pizza and you’re done. “We want to encompass everything,” Jeff said. “My favorite thing so far has been the vibe we created. I love walking in here and seeing exactly what my wife and I envisioned. We are still in a ‘Wow, this is our place?’ state-of-mind.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

3. BRISAS DO SUL BRAZILIAN STEAKHOUSE The long-awaited Brisas Do Sul Brazilian Steakhouse opened their doors in October after many years of planning. This endless experience restaurant is WHERE: 380 Palladio Parkway, Suite 305 perfect for Valentine’s Day, as there is CONTACT: 916-883-2747, brisasdosul.com quite the assortment of options. It all began nearly eight years ago when Emanuel Peres noticed the Sacramento region didn’t have anything like an authentic Brazilian steakhouse. “I used to drive a semi truck in California, and I would drive just about everywhere in the north valley,” Peres said. “There was no such thing as a Brazilian steakhouse, so I decided to bring some of Porto Alegre, Brazil, to the area where you could have an endless experience and enjoy many different cuts of meat.” Peres began working on creating Brisas Do Sul Brazilian Steakhouse in Folsom, meaning “breeze from the south.” Along the way, long-time friend Luciano Lima joined him. Lima and Peres jumped on the opportunity of having their creation in Folsom’s Palladio, as they saw it as a beautiful area in Sacramento. “We wanted to create the most authentic experience possible,” Lima said. After getting a table at the steakhouse, head to the Farmer’s Table where you’ll find all authentic Brazilian cuisines, such as a variety of exotic salads, rice, beans, mashed potatoes and greens. Once you return to your seat, you can snack on what’s on your plate, or you can flip over the black card next to you that states you are ready for meat. Once the card is flipped over, the experience continues. Seasoned and cooked to perfection, seven different cuts of meat are available during lunch, and 15 different cuts of meat during dinner — all cut tableside, Peres said.

Cattlemans Steakhouse
If you are in the mood for a delicious steak for a great value, Cattlemens Steakhouse might be your next spot to check out for Valentine’s Day. Recently celebrating 50 years in business compaWHERE: 12409 Folsom Blvd., ny-wide, Cattlemens is a staple in the Rancho Cordova Rancho Cordova area and it’s no surprise why. CONTACT: 916-985-3030, Assistant General Manager Sunni Campbell said cattlemens.com Cattlemens is very family-oriented. “We are very family-oriented, not just with the staff, but with the guests as well. Guests come in and we treat them like family. We have our regulars who come in,” she said. “One of the perks of my nightly routine is getting caught up with the regulars, and finding out about how their week was and what’s new. It’s nice to be able to come to work where everyone enjoys coming in and most people have been here for years.” Cattlemens is all about the art of aging beef and surely does not disappoint. No one should leave hungry after feasting on a steak. “We are a steakhouse. We pride ourselves on the art of aging beef and hand cutting,” Campbell said. “We do age all of our beef on the premises that we get from Harris Ranch. The meat is hand cut every day by our meat cutter Paco.” Cattlemens has an extensive menu of not only steaks, but seafood, appetizers, desserts and more. Cattlemens also offers a full bar. 16 | FOLSOM LAKE ENTERTAINER

6. MIMOSA HOUSE
5. MIKUNI JAPANESE
RESTAURANT AND SUSHI BAR Mikuni Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar has become a staple in the Folsom community in the short time it has been in town. You can never go wrong with sushi on a date, especially on Valentine’s Day. Mikuni came into existence about 30 years ago, and Owner Taro Arai couldn’t be more grateful for the love and support he has received since. “Mikuni means kingdom from God,” Arai said. “My dad always dreamed about making people feel like they are in heaven and having heavenly food.” Making and serving heavenly food is exactly what they do. When you walk into any Mikuni restaurant, you will be instantly welcomed by every employee in the building. “I want my customers to feel welcome,” Arai said. “I want them to enjoy and have a good experience, not just eating food.” Arai never thought his business would grow to be as large and popular as it currently is. At first Arai and his family were struggling. “In the beginning, my dad asked me to quit school,” he said. “He just kept dreaming. One day we were having 30 customers and he told me, ‘I have a dream of having 1,000 customers a day.’ I told him he was losing his mind. But now, we serve 1.8 million customers each year between our restaurants.”
If you like mimosas with a side of brunch, the Mimosa House might be your next visit; even on Valentine’s Day. Originally opened as Early Toast in Folsom, breakfast was a meal the whole Dedier family enjoyed, but once the world of mimosas was discovered, a partnership was split and the Dedier family ventured onto their own hotspot — the Mimosa House. First seen in the El Dorado Hills Town Center in 2012, CEO Lou Dedier knew he hit a gold mine. As someone who always enjoyed providing customer service and being a part of celebrations, the Mimosa House was the start of a beautiful adventure. “When you walk in, the experience is a leave-it-behind-at-the-door experience. We want you to come in and enjoy yourself,” he said. “If you want a couple of mimosas, great. You want to bring the kids, no problem.” The Dedier family started with a basic menu and a weekly special. The family took it one step further, and if the special did well, it made it to the menu. “Specials don’t mean it’s cheap or discounted. It means that it’s special,” he said. “Our menu is customer-driven. Our customers keep making our menu bigger.” The mimosa menu is no different from the food. From classic to exotic and funky, the Mimosa house has almost an unlimited number of mimosa flavors to choose from. There is something for everyone.

Sienna Restaurant
Sienna Restaurant, located in El Dorado Hills, screams warm and WHERE: 3909 Park Drive, El Dorado Hills inviting, as well as romantic for CONTACT: 916-941-9694, Valentine’s Day. Siennarestaurants.com After spending his life working in the restaurant industry, Mark Platt decided to open his own restaurant with his wife, Karoline. Nine years later, their brand is wildly successful with four locations. When you walk into Sienna, you immediately feel comfortable, like you are in your own home. With neutral tones on the walls, chairs, flooring, all the way down to the candle holders, the Platts said they want their guests to experience a warm and relaxing feeling. Karoline said it wasn’t easy brainstorming a name for the restaurant. “I was looking through a box of Crayola crayons and saw Sienna with two Ns on a brown crayon. When I looked it up it meant warm and inviting. I thought it was perfect. This is why our restaurants are brown and neutral tones,” she said. With more than 100 varieties of wine in a temperature-controlled wine cellar, Sienna is sure to please any wine lover. “The crowd really enjoys wine,” Mark said. “At Sienna, we do monthly wine dinners, which are paired with a four-course meal that our chefs create. We are big winos, so we are constantly tasting wine and creating a list that is unique and interesting.”
8. SUTTER STREET STEAKHOUSE
Sutter Street Steakhouse
The Sutter Street Steakhouse has been a staple in the Folsom community since 2010, and all these years later, it’s still bringing fresh ideas and offerings to the table. WHERE: 604 Sutter St., Folsom CONTACT: 916-351-9100 This option is a great one for Valentine’s Day, as Sutterstreetsteakhouse.com they take fine dining to a new level. Partner and Executive Chef Rich Veale said they are steak-centric, but there are options for everyone no matter what your taste buds are craving. “Rich does an amazing job with our menu and specials,” General Manager Jason Brown said. “We are a fine-dining fun steakhouse. We want our guests to come in and enjoy themselves and have the experience we try to offer — fine-dining, but not over the top.” Veale said at the steakhouse, their mantra is to get the best possible ingredients they can and treat them simply. “We don’t want to over complicate things and church them up,” Veale said. “We let the quality of the product speak for itself. While what we do here are 80 percent steaks, we also take great pride in our fish specials, locally sourced and organic chickens, as well as our vegetables.” Veale said they differ from any other steakhouse in the region as they are completely autonomous. “We have complete control over what we offer. Other steakhouses in this region are controlled by corporate offices in the Midwest, but we’re controlled by people here,” Veale said. “We don’t have anyone to answer to, and we can change the menu on the fly based on seasonality. In the Sacramento region, that’s paramount and our customers deserve that.” 18 | FOLSOM LAKE ENTERTAINER

9. THAI PARADISE Thai Paradise
Experience an authentic Thai cuisine at Thai Paradise, WHERE: 2770 E. BIDWELL ST., and for Valentine’s Day, it’s a #100, FOLSOM perfect match of flavors. CONTACT: 916-984-8988 Opened in May of 2008, Thaiparadisefolsom.com owners Alex and Jarunee Fleming started their dream. Among many delicious items on the menu, the most popular is the Pad Thai, Fleming said. Padi Thai is also his favorite item. “Pad Thai is the national dish in Thailand,” he said. “It is the hardest item on our menu to cook because you have to get the right taste, mixture and have the right timing. We use Jarunee’s secret sauce.” Fleming said his favorite thing about his restaurant is his customers. “I want customers to come in and be comfortable,” he said. “I want them to experience a Thai experience through our food and employees.”
When thinking of romantic restaurants, Visconti’s Ristorante always comes to mind. Visconti has been a well-known name within the Folsom community for almost 25 years. In 1992, Visconti’s Ristorante opened in the small location at 322 East Bidwell Street. Visconti said he started small because he had no idea how well it would do. Little did he know everyone would love it. After 18 years, the Viscontis decided to relocate to their current location where there is a larger space, as well as a banquet room, full bar and patio. When you come in, the Viscontis makes you feel like family, down to what you put in your stomach. “A lot of the recipes are family recipes, my mother’s recipes and recipes that we have created on our own,” Visconti said. Some of the more popular dishes include the linguini alla Italiana, spaghetti, chicken Parmesan and linguini shrimp asparagus, he said. “My favorite dish is the eggplant alla mamma, which is eggplant rolled in ground beef and spinach,” Visconti said. “It has spaghetti sauce on the bottom and a white cream sauce on top, and then it is baked in the oven.” Visconti said what sets Visconti’s a part from others in the industry is that they are family-owned and operated. Another thing is they make everything fresh daily with no preservatives, they are no microwaves and the only thing in their small freezer is gelato. ✶

PEDALING YOUR WAY TO THAT PERFECT DATE STORY AND PHOTO BY BILL SULLIVAN February, it’s the month in which romance is thrust before us in so many ways. From fancy candy boxes, red roses, romantic dinners and even heart-shaped pizzas, there are many options to choose from to plan that special date around. If you are one that looks for something different when it comes to a unique date on Valentine’s Day or anytime and you live in our region, a bicycle ride may be just the ticket to make a memorable day for you and another. In addition to being unique and affordable, hitting the bike trail for a special date is healthy at the same time. Each month the Folsom Lake Entertainer brings you a look into local cycling options and events in our area. This month, we’ve put together a few of our favorite ideas the plan your perfect cycling date.
1. TAKE A RIDE DOWN MEMORY LANE
Valentine’s Day is perfect for reminiscing about the good ol’ times. Flipping through photos, watching home videos. How about planning a trip to revisit those special places and share your past with the person that may very be in your future? Make a list of the important spots you and your beloved hold dear and do a cycling tour: That corner where you first met? First coffee shop visited together? First bike ride destination — romantically ruined by pouring rain? Double-check! Taking a bike trip to your favorite places will breathe life into sweet memories. Bear in mind — don’t overdo it, if you want to appreciate your surroundings, plan your route in good balance.
2. LET YOUR DATE RIDE SHOTGUN
We’ve all seen it in movies. We’ve all secretly wished to try it. If not now, when? It’s the perfect fit for two — tandem biking. The key to riding a tandem bicycle is a bit like dancing. You have to find the rhythm, trust your partner, and learn to let go. All very romantic, isn’t it? From a more practical side though, tandem biking is also safe and fast you both share the labor of pedaling. So if you don’t mind turning a few heads — let’s be honest, tandem bikes will put a happy smile on anyone’s face — why not just go for it?
3. MAKE IT EIGHT WHEELS FOR DATE
Whoever said that double-dating is only meant for restaurants or movies? Sharing is caring — so take your best couple of buds out for a romantic, yet active day and spend Valentine’s together two-on-two. Here are some tips to plan a cycling tour for a group: Choose your destination. Where do you want to ride? Will it be a city trip or a day in nature? Be considerate of everyone’s interests. Prepare the bike. And this means making sure your riding partners do the same. It will not be an easy ride if you have to fix slipped bicycle chains every couple of minutes. Research. Are your friends as enthusiastic about cycling as you are? Make sure everyone’s on the same page, or else it might mean cutting the trip short or parting ways and that never makes for a fun date. 4. MAPS CAN BE FUN
For those who want to bring creativity to the date, we recommend a little bit of artistic creativity. No, this does not necessarily mean being the next Da Vinci. How about drawing a cycling route in a funny or romantic shape? It can also be the initials of you and your other half. A portrait even, if you’re daring. It might not look like Mona Lisa, but it will be fun to see how streets twist and turn to make a pretty picture. A couple of apps that might come in handy for route-drawing are All Trails, Map My Ride, Strava among others. These will not only tell you which road to take, but also count calories, measure distance, and calculate average speed.
5. ADD STYLE TO YOUR RIDE
Have you ever noticed a group of biking enthusiasts mounting their rides proudly, wearing tweed and funky breeches? Tweed rides are now being embraced all over the world. How about organizing your own tweed Valentine’s ride for just the two of you? Decorate the bicycle and put on some awesome throwback attire. It might just be your most memorable AND stylish date yet. If theme dressing isn’t your style, dress in your normal cycling attire. After all, sporting your Spandex on a date makes it unique as well.
6. HAVE A ROMANTIC PICNIC
What could possibly be more romantic than a candlelit picnic in the park as the summer sun fades into sunset. Bring a bottle of wine, a blanket to cozy up on, and your favorite shareable snacks. With the wide range of cargo and basket options now available, going for a bike picnic has never been easier.
7. GO ON A BICYCLE BREWERY TOUR
Once the dominion of European sidewalk cafés and toasting glasses of Pinot Noir, romance itself has taken on new meaning in the modern world. These days, romance occasionally wears a flannel shirt and drinks flights of craft beer at a local microbrewery. So if your date night idea of “bubbly” is more like an IPA than Champagne, map out a few great breweries along your local bike routes and pedal away. Checking out your local craft beer scene is easiest by bicycle since you can hop between breweries without worrying about taxis or transit. In Folsom, Folsom Bike offers beer and wine at their café next door, Folsom Grind, as well as several dining options. They also have cycling maps to plan your route, perhaps start or end your ride at this location.

8. BIKE TO THE FARMERS’ MARKET
Grocery shopping doesn’t exactly scream “romance.” But by visiting your local farmers’ market, you can turn a regular old chore into a fun morning or daytime date. Peruse the stalls for fresh, local fruit and veggies and come up with a meal to cook together later.
9. GO ON A SCENIC BICYCLE ADVENTURE
Share the Passion!
There’s something to be said about good old fashioned sightseeing. No fuss, no complications, and no cost! Head out to your favorite viewpoint, or even better, map out a few viewpoints you’d like to check out along scenic bike routes. Enjoy the simplicity of just spending time together in the great outdoors.
10.THREE-COURSE MEAL, THREE DESTINATIONS
Without having to worry about parking, transit, or taxis, you can turn date night into a city-wide culinary tour. Head out for appetizers in town before cruising on for a main course at another restaurant you’ve heard so much about. Work up an appetite for dessert by biking across town to that romantic café you’ve been wanting to try.
Time to linger...
(before/after dinner or movie)
When it comes to the perfect date, adding a little adventure into the mix is always wise. Cycling in our region provides plenty of that. Happy Valentines Day and ride safe! ✶

riendly service, casual dining and delicious home cooked meals are a few of the many compliments and characterizations that describe Susie’s Country Oaks Café. Located in Granite Bay and Roseville, Susie’s has been a longtime staple in the community since 1984. Originally opened by Kurt and Susie Harms, brothers Andy and Vince Morin purchased the small business in October of 2001. Vince said the two stumbled into the business by accident. Vince started in the restaurant business in college when he needed to find a job. He bounced around the west coast from Arizona to California before landing in Sacramento. “At 26, I brought a local restaurant called the Balcony Bistro on Sutter Street in 1989,” Vince said. “I worked that for some time until Andy and I decided to purchase Susie’s in Roseville.” After having much success at their Roseville location, the two brothers expanded to Granite Bay in 2004. At Susie’s, guests know to bring a large appetite because there is a full menu of sumptuous breakfast and lunch options. “Some popular items include our omelets; country fried steak, which is a signature item; our 49er gold pans, which are unique; and our whole wheat, made-

from-scratch pancakes. We don’t use the traditional buttermilk batter,” Vince said. When dining at Susie’s, guests can expect a relaxing, casual atmosphere, where everyone is treated like family, Vince said. In the very near future, Susie’s location in Roseville will be moving to a significantly larger space, just in the next shopping center — 1000 Melody Lane. Because of the overwhelming success of this location, the Morin brothers decided to make it possible to accommodate more regulars. “Eventually, we’re bringing over all of the old murals. We have the original painter duplicating the old ones into the new location along with some new artwork,” Vince said. “We’re looking forward to the continued success of serving home cooked meals to all of our loyal guests. Thank you to all of our loyal guests we’ve had over the years.” ✶

WINE AND CHOCOLATE PAIRINGS THIS VALENTINE’S DAY W
BY CYNTHIA RENEE BROWN
NER
ith Valentine’s Day, it’s time to bring on the chocolate decadence! It’s no secret that chocolate, in so many forms is a common staple of this day designed to celebrate love. So let’s embrace it along with some of our most sumptuous wine varietals. After all, wine and chocolate are both considered aphrodisiacs, so why not double the potency by pairing the two. Because milk chocolate contains half chocolate and half cream, the added fat actually makes milk chocolate one of the easiest “true” chocolates to pair with wine. Late Harvest Red Wines like a late harvest Syrah, a Petite Sirah or even a Pinot Noir tend to contain similar qualities to ports and thus are excellent when it comes to pairing the sweetness of such reds with the fatty components found in milk chocolate. When it comes to dark chocolate, the bitterness (which is also the part brings you the health benefits), is what you will want to balance out with your wine pairing. Some single varietals that have the necessary intensity to balance dark chocolate’s bitter qualities are Zinfandels and Malbecs. And if you want to add a third aphrodisiac like coffee to the mix, try pairing coffee infused chocolate with a Petite Sirah. Of course, the original port from Portugal is always a great choice because it brings hints of cinnamon to the palette, which blends perfectly with dark chocolates containing especially high cacao percentages. We cannot forget the white chocolate lovers
either, even though technically, white chocolate isn’t a “true” chocolate because it doesn’t contain cacao. But we won’t discriminate here because white chocolate actually ends up being a great match up with dryer reds. Because white chocolate delivers hints of sweetness similar to the sugars found in raspberries, cherries and strawberries, Pinot Noir makes an excellent pairing. Even Riesling is a great option to pair with white chocolate because it often contains notes of pineapple and lemon meringue which brings out the wonderful creaminess in the white chocolate. And chocolate certainly isn’t always a solo item either, so some great matchups are chocolate covered strawberries and sweet sparkling reds which provide a smooth balance of the acidity of the strawberry with the smoothness of the chocolate. There is really no “wrong” way to pair when it comes to matching wine and chocolate. The ultimate goal when it comes to pairing is simply to balance the flavors like salty, sweet and sour between the food and wine so that the flavors can gracefully and ever so subtly emerge. Really, It all comes down to what particular pairing is pleasing to your personal palate ... wow that’s a lot of “Ps.” The point is, experiment a bit, then pick your favorite chocolate and your favorite beverage and bon appetite. Just make sure to sip n savor your way through Valentine’s Day. ✶ Cynthia Renee Brown is a monthly columnist four Folsom Lake Entertainer.

Feeling the healthy vibe BY RACHEL ZIRIN | PHOTOS BY BILL SULLIVAN
O
ne of Folsom’s newest additions, Vibe Health Bar, is the perfect fit for the health-conscious and active community, and so far, it’s been a hit. Opened in early December of 2018, Vibe Health Bar prides themselves in providing healthy food and beverages to those who are interested in living a healthy lifestyle, said Co-Owner Jeff Greco. “It’s really more of a way of life for us — it’s an experience. It’s a lifestyle. It’s how we feel; it’s Vibe Health Bar,” Greco said. “It’s about putting good fuel into your body, and we believe that’s the first step to living a happy, healthy life. It’s our goal to share that because we all believe in it and practice it ourselves.” At Vibe, there are healthy items to eat and snack on, as well as a juice line called Liquidology. Initially, the two entities were separate and looking for what the other offered.

Liquidology, which is a line of organic pressed juices and shots, opened in East Sacramento in January of 2015 by Greco and Jules Braun. Vibe Health Bar, which offered food items and smoothies, opened in Oak Park in March of 2016 by Brandon and Rachel Brodzky. “Both of us were in search for what the other company was doing, but we didn’t want to do it ourselves, so it was a good fit for us to join together,” Greco said. “We merged in October of 2016.” Both locations turned into Vibe Health Bars, selling both businesses’ products. Vibe also has three well known investors — Urijah Faber, UFC Hall of Fame; Matt Barnes, former NBA player with the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors; and Aaron Reeves, a successful local entrepreneur and investor. When looking for their next location venture, the owners were looking in Folsom, Roseville and Granite Bay, and stumbled upon the Folsom space they are in now. Greco said in the future they plan to expand to Granite Bay, as well. “Folsom is a very active and healthy community and we felt it was a perfect match. Also, Rachel grew up here, so it was special,” Greco said. “Our atmosphere is laid back, warm and welcoming, like being at home. We
want to foster a community of like-minded people who are really looking to share and learn from each other; a place where you feel comfortable and trust what you’re eating is truly healthy for you and not just advertised as healthy.” The nutritional information for the food and juices are available, Greco said. Some popular items include the avocado toast, barbecue chicken and green wrap, the vegan pesto grilled cheese and acai bowels. “Our most popular item is our avocado toast. Our pesto is a nut-based pesto, so that combined with the avocado is super yummy and filling,” he said. “We have a lot of options for vegans, as well as a substitution menu. We cater to all different dietary restrictions and plans.” The Purple Butter and Coffee Buzz smoothies are top sellers, Greco said. Something unique about the Folsom location is the espresso bar. Greco said they don’t have one in the other two locations, and it has been nice connecting with the morning crowd before work. As far as Liquidology, popular juices include the Birthday Suit, Vitality and Greenie in a Bottle. “About Last Night is also very popular, especially on the weekend when people are vibing a little too much,” he said. When asked what his favorite part about Vibe is, Greco said the people. “One of the surprise things is that we end up connecting a lot of people that are in different disease states, which is something I never would have considered. You get to give them comfort and give them fuel to help them work their way through that state, and that’s super rewarding,” Greco said. ✶ FEBRUARY 2019 | 31

HISTORIC HAPPENINGS
AVOID PARKING PROBLEMS AND TAKE THE LIGHT RAIL
BY JUDY COLLINSWORTH
I’m always a bit surprised to see what happens in the course of any given day in the Historic District. It’s an ever-changing place. After 70 days of ice skating and holiday cheer in the plaza, we’ve said goodbye for another season. The ice has melted, and the rink is now packed for safekeeping until next year. Because of our wonderful sponsors, this community favorite will be back next November. To all our ice skaters, both young and young at heart, we thank you for bringing the holiday spirit with you to the ice rink. We enjoyed seeing your funny Christmas sweaters, your blinking necklaces and your Santa hats. We loved watching dads and moms teaching their kids how to ice skate. It’s a special time. The ice rink season comes and goes far too quickly. As an association, we work hard to produce events here in the District that are primarily free and family friendly. Oh, and always FUN! When we have events, it can be quite difficult to find parking in the district. This year, the Folsom Historic District Association will be encouraging everyone to arrive here by light rail. Especially on event days, this one simple act of taking light rail into the district can make a huge impact on your day, and ours. It can lower blood pressure, remove frown lines and basically make the world around you a lovelier place. There will be a total of six events hosted by the Folsom Historic District Association that will offer free rides on the light rail. Yes, that’s right. Jump on light rail at any station and get off at Historic Folsom for FREE. Plus, now light rail picks up every half-hour. No more long waits, no more stressful hunting for parking, no more cranky start to a fun day in the district. Yes, we do have parking lots and garages, but on event days, they fill quickly. We encourage you to try the light rail. Make it part of your adventure. Big thanks to SacRT for their incredible partnership. Another fun way to avoid the parking issues is to park near a trail outside the district and bicycle or walk the trail into the district. What a fun way to get your exercise for the day. Here is a list of our upcoming events in Historic Folsom. We look forward to seeing you here! April 6: Sip and Stroll - Wine and food tastings in various fun locations in the district, 2-5 p.m., ticketed event. April 29: 52nd annual Spring Arts & Crafts Fair 9 a.m.-4 p.m., free to attend, free light rail rides. May 4: Rainbow Bridge Centennial - Tasting on the Bridge 4:30-7:30 p.m. Tasting is a ticketed event. May 4: Folsom Lake Symphony - Amphitheater 8 p.m. Free to attend, free light rail rides To learn more about these events, to purchase tickets and to learn more about free rides on the light rail, go to historicfolsom.org or email info@historicfolsom.org.

Fall in love this February at Iron Hub Winery

Iron Hub Winery
hile most people want to gravitate to their favorite restaurant during Valentine’s Day weekend, Amador County should be on anyone’s list HOURS: 11 A.M. – 5 P.M.,FRIDAYof daytime activities and Iron Hub is celebrating the weekend with MONDAY chocolate fondue and wine. The price is minimal for non-wine club members at $5 WHERE: 12500 STEINER ROAD, a pop and is an event not-to-be-missed. If visitors cannot pop up the weekend of PLYMOUTH Feb. 16 and 17 there are several reasons to visit this spectacular venue. CONTACT: 209-245-6307, Iron Hub Winery is located in the heart of Shenandoah Wine Country, known IRONHUBWINES.COM for its small-batch white wines and quality reds. Their current offerings include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Grenache, Barbera, Zinfandel, and much more. Iron Hub Winery prides itself on unparalled customer service and visitors will feel like they are simply at home while sipping wine and enjoying fantastic views. The winery hosts multiple events including the Valentine’s Day event mentioned above, so be sure to check the calendar frequently for the latest happenings. The story behind the vineyard is nothing less than amazing as well. Tom Jones founding member of Lava Cap Winery in Placerville, started his own winery with his wife Beth and their children in Amador County. Who does not love a family-owned business? After purchasing his 33-acre property in 2014, he believed that there is no substitution for controlling the growing conditions in the vineyard and, most importantly, tasting the ripening grapes to determine harvest. His new estate afforded him creative control from the vine to the bottle. And, the quality of wines clearly speak for themselves. The winery offers tastings from six to seven wines that are complimentary with a bottle purchase or free for the “Inner Circle” Club members. Iron Hub Winery is also a dog-friendly destination and dogs are allowed on leash on their beautiful patio area. Please note however, limousines and bus groups must make reservations in advance. Why be a part of the Inner Circle Wine Club? Yes, all wineries have wine memberships, but Iron Hub Winery has stepped it up just a notch. While the members newsletter is fantastic, the key point here is to visit, sip and enjoy this locale. ✶ 38 | FOLSOM LAKE ENTERTAINER

Scott Harvey Wines
Let’s face it. It is cold and if your favorite NFL team did not make it to the play offs you want to A: Get out of the house and B: Find a fun activity to do. Guess what? Amador County wineries are just a hop, skip and a jump away HOURS: 11 A.M. – 5 P.M.,DAILY and Scott Harvey should be a destination for your weekend trip. Why? Keep PLYMOUTH: 10861 SHENANDOAH reading, you may find that little known spot, before it is wildly mainstream. ROAD First and foremost, the Scott Harvey has one tasting room in Sutter Creek. SUTTER CREEK: 9 MAIN STREET CONTACT:209-245-3670 For visitors, this means that in addition to tasting Scott Harvey wines, there are SCOTTHARVEYWINES.COM shopping and restaurant fun as well. The point is here to just make a fun weekend of visiting, as the opportunities are endless. One thing you must love (and, especially for the foodie in all of us), is the abundance of food pairing recipes on Scott Harvey’s website which range from Zinfandel to Syrah to Cabernet Sauvignon and more. Some of the recipes are from the top chefs in the industry plus there are favorite pairings. Let’s get back to the other tasting room located in Plymouth — yes, two spots where you can enjoy the same wine. A last thing that wine aficionados must note, the Scott Harvey blog is fantastic from local happenings to food pairings. Scott Harvey wines are nothing short of remarkable. Many people rave about the dessert wines including the Jana Winery EIS, ice-style wine and the Scott Harvey port-style wine. The winery also has an abundance to taste and purchase, including whites, reds and a choice selection of Zinfandels. There is clearly something for any wine visitor here. Scott Harvey Wines was also awarded the 2016 California State Fair Vineyard of the Year. The bottom line is to take a trip up to Amador County this February and experience this fabulous locale on your own terms. ✶

RECIPE
For once, the limelight
HOLD THE FRIDGE DOOR OPEN — CABBAGE HAS SOMETHING TO SAY
PHOTOS AND RECIPE BY MINDY SCHILLER
The cabbage is a humble food if I ever saw one. It’s one of those vegetables that lays low, at the bottom of the crisper, abandoned because you bought it in a fit of ambition and then forgot about it, covering it with sexier counterparts: eggplant, asparagus, or Brussels sprouts (cabbage’s more glamorous cousin, only granted such status because of its place on the Thanksgiving Table and its natural sidekick, the ever-trumping bacon). But it turns out that unassuming cabbage has the last word, because even when you leave it for weeks in the fridge, it’s still pretty much usable. Peel off the top few layers and you’re good to go. Sure, says the cabbage, walk all over me. Forget me, leave me to dry out at the bottom of your food chain. I will still be there for you. Like your kids, whom you forgot to pick up from school. Yup, that’s cabbage. The doormat of the vegetable world.
But we overlook it to our detriment. Cabbage is not only one of the more flavorful ingredients out there, it’s downright cheap. As in, when you walk past the artichokes and sigh because you just can’t stomach spending $2.89 per globe (especially when you’re going to throw away everything but the heart anyway — whoever thought this was a good idea?), you can always rely on your stalwart friend, the cabbage. In American cuisine, cabbage is mostly hidden behind mayonnaise and sugar in coleslaw-type dishes. The recipes below — Eastern European and Middle Eastern, respectively — make cabbage the star, using complimentary ingredients to make the cabbage taste more like, well, cabbage. These are humble, peasant dishes. But you know what? They put the artichoke to shame. And you’ll learn your lesson: Never overlook the cabbage again.

HALUSKI: CABBAGE, ONIONS AND EGG NOODLES
Serves 6 Haluski is a Slavic dish with counterparts in Hungary, Poland and Romania. When I was growing up, we called it Lukshn mit kroet, Yiddish for “noodles with cabbage.” And yes, it really is as simple as that title suggests. There are three basic ingredients: cabbage, onions and egg noodles. Everything else is just a variable to tweak according to your preference. The secret here is the caramelization of the onions, so low and slow is your friend. Don’t rush it. Throw the onions in the frying pan and go watch an episode of “House of Cards.” When you come back, they’ll be perfect. Ingredients: About half of a 12-ounce bag of extra wide egg noodles (wide is key; don’t use the skinny ones) 1 small head of green cabbage 2 onions 1/2 tablespoon salt, plus more to taste pepper, to taste 6 tablespoons oil, divided Instructions: Slice the onion thinly. The more surface area, the more caramelized goodness. Throw it into the frying pan at medium low and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Slice the cabbage, but not as thinly; you don’t want mush. When the onions are caramelized, add the cabbage. You might have to add it in stages, depending on the size of the pan. Add the salt, and turn the heat up to medium. The salt makes the cabbage wilt. In a separate pot, boil the noodles using the directions on the package. When the noodles are al dente, drain them and add them to the cabbage mixture. Taste for seasoning and add more salt and pepper according to your taste. Voila — you’re done. Simple and delicious. Note: if you want a heartier meal, start with sliced sausage or other meat instead of the oil. The grease will work even better for sautéing. Alternately, use butter instead. You really can’t mess this up.
CABBAGE SALAD
Serves 6 In the Middle East, meals are often prefaced by a large spread of colorful salads: Hummus, tomato-and-cucumber, babaghanoush (eggplant), carrot, and cabbage — to name a few. This salad is intensely simple and can be the garnish to an entree (falafel, lamb, fish tacos), or be served as a side dish. Make sure to let the salad marinate for a while before serving. In fact, it gets better with time. You’ll wonder how so few ingredients can make such music together. Ingredients: 1 head purple cabbage juice of 2 lemons 1 teaspoon salt dash of pepper 1/2 teaspoon sugar 2 tablespoons mayonnaise Instructions: First, cut the head into a few manageable chunks to work with. Then, slice the cabbage thinly. Add all of the ingredients together and store in the fridge for at least an hour so the cabbage marinades. When you’re ready to serve the salad, mix it, add a dash of salt, and enjoy. FEBRUARY 2019 | 41

FAMED M.S. DIXIE OFFERS VALENTINE’S EVENT,YEAR-ROUND CRUISES BY BILL SULLIVAN | PHOTOS ARE SPECIAL TO THE ENTERTAINER

hen one thinks of Lake Tahoe, they tend to associate snow and skiing with winter visits and enjoying the water during the spring and summer months. However, the winter months provide for spectacular scenery from the famed blue waters and M.S. Dixie, the paddle wheeler, providing breathtaking cruises year round, even on Valentine’s Day. The 400-passenger, award-winning M.S. Dixie is the largest cruising vessel on Lake Tahoe, and a local favorite. It is often branded as one of Tahoe’s most entertaining and affordable water activities. The sightseeing and photo opportunities from the M.S. Dixie are amazing, a must for anyone who wants to enjoy the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe aboard a 42 | FOLSOM LAKE ENTERTAINER

vessel with great history behind it. Surrounded by majestic mountains topped with snow, crystal blue water and fresh crisp mountain air, aboard the M.S. Dixie you’ll learn about the geological and cultural history of Lake Tahoe, including tales of Mark Twain who spent a good deal of time at Lake Tahoe and Nevada. Twain was a well-known riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west where he landed in the silver mining town of Virgin-
ia City, Nevada. Twain loved paddle wheelers, his pen name was even founded from nautical references. The 151-foot M.S. Dixie paddle wheeler departs from historic Zephyr Cove and treks to Emerald Bay nearly daily throughout the year. Emerald Bay is one of the most beautiful and iconic spots on Lake Tahoe year round, but during the winter months, sailing into this area is nothing short of spectacular. The highlight of the tour, of course, is Emerald Bay. Heading into the wind and sun as you sit some 30 feet off the water gives a perspective of the bay that you can’t get anywhere else. It makes this trip worth the price of admission. M.S. Dixie offers three cruises a day yearround; a Daytime Scenic Cruise and the enchanting Sunset Dinner Dance Cruise, which includes live entertainment and delicious dinners. All cruises depart directly from historic Zephyr Cove Resort, located about four miles north of Stateline, and sails to Emerald Bay and back. If you are used to being on the North or South shores, you see the terrain from a different angle, and the long trek directly across the lake allows you to truly appreciate the immense size of Lake Tahoe. The cruise lasts approximately 2 and a half hours and features commentary and narration for about half of the trek. Not only is the Ms. Dixie the largest boat on Lake Tahoe, it is said to be the largest craft ever to ply the waters of the lake. The two outdoor decks and indoor seating provide enough room for everyone, while you will need to bundle up a bit this time of year, it is well worth the extra layers. There are also two bars that provide drinks and lunches on the scenic day cruises and a full-dinner service on the sunset dinner cruise. The “MS Dixie II” routinely departs during days of operation at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for Emerald Bay cruises. At 6 p.m. there is a sunset dinner cruise. On Feb. 14 you can take your sweetheart on a unique Valentine’s Dinner Cruise that is being offered for $120 per person, $50 for adults, which includes the cruise, dinner and a glass of champagne along with live music. The cruise is also offering specials for Easter Brunch and Mother’s Day in 2019. For complete details visit zephyrcove.com or call 800-238-2463. ✶ FEBRUARY 2019 | 43

HEAVENLY WARMTH TOP 5 POPULAR SPOTS FOR FIRE PIT FUN IN SOUTH LAKE BY BILL SULLIVAN | PHOTOS ARE COURTESY TAHOE SOUTH When it comes to South Lake Tahoe this time of year, skiing, snowmobiling and sledding all take the headlines. However, when the sun sets each day, South Lake Tahoe offers abundant options for visitors to enjoy their favorite dish or drink beneath the stars. After all, just because it’s dark doesn’t mean you can’t continue to enjoy the fresh mountain air and starry skies and still be toasty warm. 44 | FOLSOM LAKE ENTERTAINER

After dark, Heavenly Village is a hub of activity in South Lake. Amidst the many tap houses, eateries and shops in the surrounding area is the glow of various fire pits, usually surrounded by small groups of visitors, enjoying one another’s company as well as food beverage and scenery. With a little help from our friends at Tahoe South, the Folsom Lake Entertainer has put together a collection of five “hot spots” when it comes to fire pit fun in the area. Granted, there are many more options than just these, but here are few favorites you can count on surrounding Heavenly Village after stepping off the slopes for the day.
1.TAP INTO HEAT AND BREW
AT MCP’S
Located across the street from the Heavenly Gondola, McP’s Taphouse is a popular pub featuring traditional Irish fare and libations. Enjoying a refreshing pint of Guinness at the bar or sipping on an Irish coffee next to the fire is a great way to warm up and relax after a day of skiing.
2. CAMPFIRE FUN AT
BASECAMP
The beer garden at Basecamp Hotel offers guests a cozy atmosphere around fire pits along with seasonal beer options and food selection. The boutique hotel courtyard welcomes both hotel guests and outside visitors to gather around the fire with family and friends. FIRE POWER: When the sun sets in South Lake Tahoe the fun is just beginning as the area surrounding Heavenly Village is known for some of the most popular fire pit dining, drinking and socializing along the south shore.

“
Everyone should expect to experience brilliant vocals and choreography, brightly colored creatures, and a lot of magic.” Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable features popular songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.” Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab. Artistic Director Debbie Wilson said this production will be giant; though that’s not a surprise given EDMT’s record. “This show will be technologically significant. There is flying, special effects, moments going from under the water to top of the water — it’s a big darn deal,” Wilson said. “For example, there will be a scene of guys on the ship on top of the water. Then the ship has to fly up so we can go under the water. It’s pretty crazy.” Wilson again takes her shows above and beyond the last. With this production, numerous cast members will have wheels on their shoes to give off the effect of swimming. “They have had to learn to move around on them, and do choreography without running into one another,” she said. “It’s a very tough show, but it’s also very exciting and we’re working hard on all of it.” Nittany Biggs will play one of the production’s Ariels in the Kelp Cast. “Ariel is the protagonist of The Little Mermaid. This musical was adapted from Disney’s movie, but at her core, Ariel remains the same relatable teenager in both versions. She is genuine and sweet, yet still adventurous and headstrong,” Biggs said. “Ariel was the first Disney princess allowed to pursue her passion and make her own mistakes. She learns and grows from her decisions and refuses to quit fighting for what she wants. Biggs said she is more familiar with the original cartoon of “The Little Mermaid,” and she is looking forward to bringing her character alive on stage. “I think I’m most excited to bring her to life onstage and know that there is a whole crowd of kids and adults that relate to this sincere girl who is finding her way in the world,” she said. “For me, every part of putting on a show is incredible. This show, I’ve really anticipated seeing the completed technical part of things — the finished costumes, sets, props, special effects — all of which I know will be astounding.”
Jocelyn Haney will play one of the production’s Ursulas, and she is looking forward to seeing all of the costumes. “Ursula has so many amazing songs in this show. I’m most excited to sing my heart out through her manipulative personality,” Haney said. “I’m looking forward to seeing all the incredible costumes. It’s an addition that makes each individual character in the cast come to life.” Wilson said this production might be her most elaborate yet. “I don’t think I have seen this show done with this amount of people this elaborately. I think there’s about 272 costumes; not pieces, but costumes,” she said. “On any given afternoon, you could walk into the costume shop, and it’s like Santa’s workshop. It’s thrilling.”

Biggs said guests can expect to have non-stop entertainment. “Something is sure to captivate your attention between the acting, singing, dances, costumes, scenery and special effects. There isn’t a dull moment,” Biggs said. “I love the way this show explores the depths of belonging, home, and true love. There is something relatable and something to love in every single character. It’s all brought to light in a very fun and engaging way.” Haney said guests can expect great vocals and choreography. “Everyone should expect to experience brilliant vocals and choreography, brightly colored creatures, and a lot of magic,” she said. “I hope everyone has so much fun while experiencing this show. The cast has put so much hard work and dedication. I know I can speak for everyone in the cast when I say that we can’t wait to share the magic of ‘The Little Mermaid.’” Wilson said she is looking forward to seeing the whole show come together. “Even though we have only done it in the rehearsal hall so far, our cast is truly amazing vocally. The stage will be full of all different beautiful fish, people flying. It should just be a gigantic spectacle,” Wilson said. “It’s a very heartfelt show, about a father and daughter doing what they need to do.”✶ FEBRUARY 2019 | 53

1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Feb. 2-24 This is the endearing classic about a mouse named Stuart Little who is born into an ordinary New York family. All the charm, wisdom and joy of the E.B. White original are captured in this adaptation by Joseph Robinette, who also dramatized the highly acclaimed stage version of “Charlotte’s Web.” The many adventures — both big and small — of Stuart Little are brought vividly to life. The acting ensemble plays many human and animal roles in a series of delightful scenes that make up the marvelous maneuverings of a mild-mannered mouse trying to survive in a “real people’s world.” FEBRUARY 2019 | 55

REAL ESTATE

FLE February 2019.indd 58
I left my heart in ... Folsom? I love Folsom for a lot of reasons. In February, I especially love Folsom because it makes my life easier to celebrate Valentine’s Day and my anniversary. February is too close to Christmas. I just paid the bills and now Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. But since I have Folsom — specifically the Palladio — life is just easier. It’s a one-stop get-it-all-done place for all of my valentine (and anniversary) needs. Let’s get started. First stop: Bank of America. I can pay my bills and take out more money for that day at the Palladio. What should I do to treat my wife to a wonderful Valentine’s Day and anniversary? After all, she’s very supportive of the hectic and constant work lifestyle of a successful Realtor. So after I visit the bank, I’m ready to focus on the big day. Need clothes for me? Or for her? A visit to Jos A. Bank, Apricot Lane and Forever 21 should get us dressed and ready. My favorite stop is See’s Candies — a beautiful heart-shaped box of chocolates for her and a little bag of my favorites for me. District Sales Manager Melissa Cuellar reminds me, “Valentine’s Day is one of our busiest times of year. We provide many tasty treats for every Valentine, but come early as our shops get very busy closer to the holiday.” Next stop, fresh flowers at Whole Foods. Roses, but white or red? What Valentine’s Day is complete without a visit to Grebitus Jewelers? No more needing to go far for a fun night out. Folsom offers so many great choices for dinner. Chicago Fire’s deep-dish pizza, Blue Nami’s sushi, Buckhorn BBQ — the new kid on the block; their tri-tip is fantastic. “We’ve been working a long time to become a part of this community and are so happy to be
here,” said Buckhorn BBQ owner John Pickerel. After a tasty and relaxing dinner, it’s off to the movies. With 16 screens and luxury reclining seats, there’s plenty of choices. The seats are so comfortable, I don’t care what we go see. Two hours, shut off my phone, reclining seat — sign me up. But wait! We can go snorkel with the stingrays at SeaQuest Folsom, or go to Painted Studios and let out my best Rembrandt while sipping a favorite Chardonnay. Better yet, for complete relaxation, check out the Rosewater massage with a hot stone infusion at Serenity Spa. Excuse me for leaving out other great businesses at the Palladio, but I find it amazing that we can do ALL that in just one location in Folsom. And if those choices don’t fit our fancy, just nearby, there will be an amazing live performance at the Harris Center for the Arts at Folsom Lake College. I am so lovestruck that I almost forgot that this is a real estate column. The end of year numbers for Folsom and El Dorado Hills continue to amaze. In Folsom, average sales price for 2018 was up to almost $566,000. Homes sold quickly at an average of 26 days on market and at $271 per square foot. Just under 1,000 homes sold in Folsom in 2018. In El Dorado Hills, the numbers are equally as impressive as 2018 sales prices rose to an average of almost $744,000, average of 41 days on market, $252 per square foot and well over 900 homes sold in 2018. What’s the forecast for 2019? Time will tell. While external factors like interest rate hikes, the election and fires at end of 2018 may have been responsible for a slowing 2018, the market is still moving. Homes are still selling. ✶ To contact Pat Quan, call 916-812-4341, email pquan@ cbnorcal.com or go to PatQuan.com. BRE #01918240.
