17th Annual Dr. George Car Show Features Over 1,000 Cars Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association’s (PSCA) 17th Annual Dr. George Car Show takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Saturday, February 9, 2019. This show is one of the largest one-day car events on the West Coast and the oldest car show in the Coachella Valley. This year the show will feature over 1,000 vehicles displayed on over 20 plus acres.

As the main annual fundraising event held by PSCA, Desert Cancer Foundation receives 100 percent of the net proceeds.

Participants come from several

states to show their exotic sports cars to classic hot rods. The event also showcases antique vehicles, restored and original collectable cars, trucks and motorcycles. Some of the custom cars are worth over $100,000. Spectators can talk to owners, and also hear stories from some of the special guests as they re-live their experiences in racing, car development and engineering. Celebrity guest speakers include John Kraman, Mecum Auction Commentator; Allen Grant, world champion Shelby Race Team Driver; Peter Brock, designer of the 1963 Cor-

vette Stingray and the Shelby Daytona Coupe; and Jim McGee, the winningest Indianapolis 500 and Formula 1 team manager.

An estimated 28 trophies will be given out, including “The Best in Show,” “The Best in Show – Special Interest,” and “The Best in Show – Young Guns.” The event includes a beer garden, live entertainment, and vendors offering food, clothing, and a variety of car related items, plus a silent auction and raffles.

Dr. George Car Show takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Saturday,

February 9, 2019. Two events prior to the actual show take place on El Paseo. On Wednesday, February 6 a special El Paseo Cruise Night Auto Auction at the Gardens on El Paseo takes place; and on Friday afternoon, February 8, there will be a special El Paseo Cruise featuring over 200 of the cars that will be in the show the following day.

Attention all you golf aficionados, don’t let the grass grow under your feet! The Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC] reports that Nike will soon introduce for sale a new

take on golf shoes, golf sneakers featuring what the shoe maker calls, “golf-ready traction.” And, to give them a bit of panache they have fairway-like uppers made from an AstroTurf-like material. The company says when they hit the stores, they’ll cost a mere $140 a pair.

A recent study concluded that seniors over age 65 pass along fake and bogus internet news items seven times more often than young adults (18-29) and twice as often as those slightly younger (45-65). Researchers theorized that seniors don’t have enough digital media literacy to figure out what’s true and what isn’t. They also wondered if age-related memory problems keep us from recognizing a hoax when we see it.

Specifically, this study was done during the last election by researchers at Princeton and NYU and was conducted on Facebook to see what links people passed along.

They say it was done with user consent, but whether that’s true or not, we need to take a step back and reexamine our internet habits.

Here is why: • Media manipulators believe we can be targeted. If there’s a chance we’ll pass along fake news, political or not, they’ll be sure we see it.

• They believe we can be manipulated. If you shop for an item online and suddenly start seeing ads for it everywhere, you’re being tracked.

What you can do: If you use Google or Gmail, go into your settings and block everything you can. If you don’t know how, get help. Convince your senior center to hold classes on Internet safety. Use Mozilla Firefox as your Internet browser and install the uBlock ad blocker.

The big question: Are that many of us really sending out fake news links, when it’s the youngest generations that basically live on their phones and computers?

Per a 2018 Pew study, we use social media at half the rate of the youngest age group.

National Parks have been set aside as examples of wilderness and biodiversity, protecting a natural heritage of global significance, and many or all are threatened by climate change. In particular, at Joshua Tree National Park, which straddles the Colorado and Mojave Deserts in southern California, hotter and drier conditions are chasing species northward and uphill from their habitat into cooler locations.

Previous research has predicted the widespread demise of an iconic keystone species, the Joshua tree, Yucca brevifolia, including within the National Park that bears its name. It remains a question as to whether this droughtadapted species can persist here in the future.

Identifying places in the landscape that provide refuge to plants

and animals is important to help land managers save desert species such as the Joshua tree. Our research to investigate where these “safe areas” or “refugia” are in the landscape is turbo-charged by the power of citizen science (many hands make light work!) and “big data”- detailed output from global climate models and software.

Rather than an ominous prediction of extinction, climate refugia provide land stewards with targets for focusing protective management, giving desert biodiversity places to weather the future.

The Cops Will Pour the Drinks Three citizens of Kutztown, PA will imbibe for free at an event sponsored by the Kutztown Police Department. A call for volunteers “willing to drink hard liquor to the point of inebriation” was posted on the department’s Facebook Page recently and produced instant results. The volunteers will be part of a training exercise designed to demonstrate how to administer standardized field sobriety tests during suspected DUI incidents. There were quite

a few responses when the police announced they had selected the three volunteers, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC].

Most of them lamented that they weren’t picked, and many asked to be considered for future such “drinking exercises.”

“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” (PG-13) At Christmas, a spirited young woman named Clara (Mackenzie Foy) receives an enigmatic gift from her late mother. The key to this gift is presented by her godfather (Morgan Freeman), who sends her on a quest across a fantastic land where she must battle as queen for the Fourth Realm against the Mouse King and the plucky and terrifying Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren). Delightful and fanciful but moderately hard to follow, the whole thing is a little too over-the-top, including Keira Knightly as an aggressively flighty Sugar Plum Fairy. But we loved relative unknown Jayden Fowora-Knight as the steadfast Nutcracker soldier Phillip.

world is rocked by the admission that their seemingly normal son (Lucas Hedges) is gay.

The preacher and his wife send the boy to a Christian conversion camp, where he is to be reprogrammed out of his wayward feelings.

It’s tragically hard to be a loving parent whose values are at odds with your child’s sexuality.

It’s tragically hard to be happy and well-adjusted at the expense of being yourself. This film recognizes those realities while exposing the shameful practices and futility of so-called conversion programs.

Swinton plays three parts in this film and one is an older German male psychotherapist. I still can’t tell if it’s supposed to be obvious that it’s her under all that latex.

That about sums up how I feel about this art-house horror.

Dear Rusty: I recently retired after more than 40 years in the construction industry. I’m 60 and my wife a nd I recently moved south to enjoy retirement in a new and milder environment.

At this point, we do not plan on receiving my SS benefit until I reach my full retirement age of 66 and 8 months. In my 2018 statement, the Estimated Benefits Section, it states “You have enough credits to qualify for benefits at your current earning rate. (If you continue working until your full retirement age of 66 years and 8 months your payment will be ….).” Then it shows an amount for my full retirement age, age 70 & age 62. My question is, if I don’t work from now to my full retirement age will that significantly reduce my SS benefit rate that is quoted on my statement?

But they make a critical assumption which will, indeed, make a difference in the actual amount of your benefit when you finally claim it.

Author Lecture “Below the Line: Anatomy of a Successful Movie” with Meredith Jordan Join the Palm Springs Public Library on Wednesday, February 13 for “Below the Line: Anatomy of a Successful Movie” with author Meredith Jordan. This newly released book takes you behind the scenes of how a movie is made.

The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. in The Learning Center (TLC).

Meredith Jordan will be discussing her just-published book Below the Line: Anatomy of a Successful Movie. The author was embedded on a major motion picture to follow the process from the inside. The film Last Vegas starred Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Mary Steenburgen but in these pages they play supporting roles. Instead readers follow an ensemble cast made up of the production designer, costumer supervisor, propmaster, and even the rock star who wrote the score.

The book opens in an empty studio and follows various departments as they do their jobs

to prep the movie, watches as the famous actors arrive, and then shadows along every day of principal photography. We see everyone at work. It continues through wrap and post-production whereupon the author went to costume and prop houses, Panavision, editing, sound and postproduction facilities. It finishes with marketing and distribution and ultimately box office and after-market receipts, which show a net profit of about $100 million. Below the Line proves movies are a collaborative art form. This is what it really takes to make a movie.

Those estimates assume that you will continue working at your current income level until you reach your full retirement age (FRA). But since you retired from work at age 60 your actual benefit (assuming you continue without working) will be less than the current estimates you have from Social Security.

Whether the reduction will “significantly reduce” your benefit depends on your actual earnings in the 35 years used to compute your benefit when you claim.

Your benefit is determined by adjusting for inflation all your lifetime earnings as reported to the IRS (but only up to the annual payroll tax cap for each year). They then select the highest earning 35 years over your lifetime, total them and divide by 420 (number of months in 35 years) to arrive at your “average indexed monthly earnings,” or AIME. This is a number used to compute your actual benefit amount.

Since the highest earning years are usually the ones later in your career, stopping work before you reach FRA will yield a lower benefit - if the estimated benefit computation used the predicted

earnings between age 60 and your FRA to arrive at your benefit estimate. The key parameter used to determine your actual benefit amount is something called your “primary insurance amount” (PIA), which is computed from your AIME and is your benefit at your full retirement age.

If you claim before FRA, your benefits will be reduced according to the number of months before you claim (reduced by about 6.7% for each of the first 3 years early and then 5% more for any years more than 3 years prior to your FRA). Conversely, if you wait beyond FRA to claim, your benefit will grow at 8% per year until you are 70, when it would be 26.7% more than it would be at your full retirement age.

You don’t have to wait until age 70 to apply, because you’ll earn delayed retirement credits (DRCs) of 2/3rds of 1% per month of delay beyond your full retirement age. But the longer you wait to claim, the more your benefit will be (up to age 70), thus possibly easing the impact of any benefits lost by not working until your FRA.

• 1 bunch broccoli • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 1 medium red-skin potato, diced • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour • 3 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • 1 cup grated extra-sharp Cheddar • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 (12-ounce) can fat-free evaporated milk • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 green onions, roots discarded, white and green parts thinly sliced 1. Separate broccoli stems and the florets. Trim and discard the bottom of the stems and peel the tough outer layers. Finely chop the stems and coarsely chop the florets, and set aside separately.

2. Mist a large pot with nonstick cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Add the broccoli stems, onion and potato, and

cook, stirring, until softened, 7 to 10 minutes. Add the flour and cook, stirring, until lightly toasted, about 2 minutes.

3. Stir in the broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened and vegetables are tender, 12 to 15 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, combine reserved florets and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, cover and continue to steam until the florets are bright green and crisp-tender, about 5 minutes.

Add the entire contents of the pot with the florets to the soup along with the nutmeg. Stir to combine and remove from the heat.

5. Stir in the Cheddar, Worcestershire and milk. Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with the scallions. Makes 6 servings.

Save Wildlife One Brew at a Time at The Living Desert’s Brew at the Zoo

‘Laugh Out Loud’ to Support Jewish Federation of the Desert

Celebrate the 10th year of saving wildlife one brew at a time at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens’ Annual Brew at the Zoo in Palm Desert, presented by MacLean Capital Advisors, on Saturday, February 9 at 6:30 p.m.

Guests will enjoy a wide variety of beverage tastings from more than 30 vendors representing many of the region’s finest specialty breweries, wineries, as well as other libations, including liquor and non-alcoholic beverages. New this year, 10 Southern California based food trucks will be on hand to offer a wide-variety of gourmet street fare for purchase.

Also new this year, guests will not want to miss the opportunity to take a ride on a hot air balloon!

Tethered balloon rides, available for an additional fee, will offer stunning vistas of the Zoo, as well

as plenty of photo ops. The evening also includes four stages of live entertainment set throughout the park. Attendees will have exciting animal encounters and also can explore the African section of the park to see zebras, cheetahs, warthogs, Arabian oryx and many other animals.

Through February 8, general admission tickets are $60 for members and $65 for nonmembers.

VIP tickets are $150 and designated driver tickets are available for $20. Tickets at the door are $70 members and $75 for non-members. This is a 21 and older event, and all guests must bring a valid photo ID for admission.
