Birds are the Star Attraction of a New Family Day at Sunnylands Center & Gardens Sunnylands Center & Gardens invites the public to a day of free activities, games, and displays that focus on the amazing array of birds that can be found on the former Annenberg estate.

The event, Family Day: Celebrating the Birds of Sunnylands, takes place Sunday, January 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is inspired by the exhibition now on display at the Center, Flight Plan: The Birds of Sunnylands, which revealed the devotion of Walter and Leonore Annenberg, Sunny-

lands’ founders, to the study of birds. The exhibition is a collection of 52 vibrant images of birdlife at Sunnylands by National Geographic photographer Tim Laman.

On Family Day, guests will be entertained by musicians and the bird puppetry of One Grain of Sand Puppet Theater, a collective of artists, performers, and educators who draw on the traditions of puppetry and mask art to convey stories.

Other events and activities include: • Guided bird walks on the hour from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• A curator-led walk through the Flight Plan exhibition at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

• Exploration stations featuring the fascinating qualities of birds, from feathers to talons, beaks and bones.

• Toys & games on the great lawn.

Still a Swinger at 86 Octogenarian Betty Goedhart of La Jolla, CA became a swinger when she was 78 and, by the time she turned 84 years of age, she made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest female performing flying trapeze artist. Here’s yet another study that says we can increase our mental sharpness by walking or riding a stationary bike three times a week for six months and going on the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. This Duke University study has an interesting result, however: It concluded that we can shave nine years off our brain age.

The study looked at seniors who had mild cognitive impairment and assigned them one of four combinations of activities: the walking/bike exercise, a DASH diet or both. A fourth choice was health education alone. The first three months were spent doing exercise under the supervision of the research facility. Later the participants were released to exercise on their own.

Specifically, the seniors were asked to ride a stationary bike or walk for 35 minutes three times a week following a 10-minute warm up. The DASH diet, for those who

were assigned, promotes healthy grains, low sodium, reduced dairy and meat — the standard healthy diet for those with high blood pressure. (See MayoClinic.org for more information.) There was no push to intensify the rate of exercise (participants were told to aim for 70 percent maximum heart rate), but the exercise intensified over time as participants became more fit.

The results: Those with the best improvements had been assigned the walking/bike exercise as well as the DASH diet. They benefited by being more organized, achieving goals and regulating behavior.

Even those who only exercised saw significant improvement. Researchers believe this was because of increased oxygen to the brain.

If you want to go on the same program, talk to your doctor and get advice, especially about the intensity rate of exercise. If you’re concerned about your balance on a stationary bike, ask about the benefits of a rowing machine instead. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Unless your town has a subway transportation system, you probably missed out on this year’s No Pants Subway Ride, a global event ongoing for 17 years. The Association of Mature American Citizens reports that commuters in two dozen cities with subways, some braving frigid temperatures, shamelessly participated in the event. A group calling itself Improv Everywhere established the annual

“happening” in New York City in 2002– where, this year, temperatures hovered around 32 degrees.

The comedians who created Improv Everywhere and the No Pants event say they had no purpose in mind other than to get onlookers smiling and maybe even laughing.

Honorable Mayor Gregory Pettis of Cathedral City Passed Away on Tuesday January 15, 2019 It is with devastating sadness that we learn of the passing of the Honorable Mayor Gregory Pettis, age 63. Elected in 1994, Mayor Pettis was the longest serving member of the City Council and the first openly gay public servant in the City’s history.

Mayor Pettis will be remembered for his progressive legislative ideas, supporting civil rights and social justice for all people, and at the same time, working hard to bring economic development to the city he loved to call home since 1979.

A fierce advocate for his constituents, Mayor Pettis has a long record of legislative accomplishments including creating a first-time homebuyer program, building Safe Routes to Schools, collaborating with the police department and social services for helping those addicted to drugs, and fostering some of the best jewels found throughout the city including the public library, City Hall, Fountain of Life, Senior Center, CV Link, Dennis Keat Soccer Fields, and Big League Dreams Sports Park.

Mayor Pettis celebrated and honored our diverse city by founding the Healing Field Pro-

gram at Patriot Park that honors our fallen soldiers, advocated for the LGBT Veterans Memorial at Desert Memorial Park, raised the first Rainbow Flag at City Hall during Cathedral City LGBT Days, and promoted and voted for Cathedral City’s “sanctuary city” status. Mayor Pettis also founded Cathedral City’s Sister City Program with the Mexican city of Tequila, Jalisco and helped launched the annual Taste of Jalisco Festival. He also worked to establish the Cathedral City Gay Business Association to foster and support gay-owned and gayfriendly companies.

When it came to economic development, Mayor Pettis played a major role in turning the City’s downtown corridor into an Arts and Entertainment District, helping to secure more than $100 million in public improvement projects for roads and bridges, advocating for passenger rail transportation in the Coachella Valley, and generating revenue through the development of the emerging cannabis industry, which has allowed Cathedral City to increase its public safety by hiring more police officers and firefighter/ paramedics.

Professionally, Mayor Pettis was a dedicated commercial realtor.

Within the community he has served as the executive director of the Palm Springs Youth Center, President of Cathedral City’s Evening Rotary Club and Desert Business Association, as well as served as a board member for United Cerebral Palsy of the Desert and the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy.

Greg received a Bachelor’s degree from Azusa Pacific University, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from University of Phoenix, and certification in the Senior Executive Program in State and Local Government from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Sheriff Augments Police Force with Cardboard Cops The cops in Brushy Creek, TX, population just under 22,000, have developed a practical way to beef up the police presence in town without going over budget, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. The authorities there are using cardboard cutouts of officers with speed detector radar guns to scare drivers into slowing down,

particularly in school zones. Robert Chody, the Sheriff of Williamson County Texas, says the cutouts work. Speeders see the cutout on the side of the road and immediately slow down.

By Angela Shelf Medearis SLOW-COOKED BURRITO FILLING You can put this filling into a bowl instead of a tortilla, if desired, and finish it with your favorite toppings.

• 1 to 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, chicken thighs or a mix, cut into 2-inch pieces • 2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil • 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder • 1 tablespoon cumin • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1 (14.5-ounce) can hot or medium diced tomatoes with jalapeño peppers, plus juice • 1 cup chicken stock, divided, plus more if needed • 1 cup instant brown rice • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed • 1 cup frozen corn • 8 large burrito-style tortillas Optional toppings: shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, sour cream, diced avocado, salsa, hot sauce, diced green onions, shredded lettuce 1. Combine the chicken pieces and the oil together in the bowl of a 2 1/2- to 3 1/2-quart slow cooker. Mix the chicken with the chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper and the can of diced tomatoes with peppers and juice. Mix until all the pieces are coated with the spices.

2. Add 1/2 cup of the chicken stock or more as needed to make sure the chicken is covered. Cover with the lid and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours.

3. Remove the lid and add the instant brown rice, black beans, frozen corn and the remaining chicken broth. Replace the lid and continue cooking on low for another 30 to 40 minutes. Check the rice periodically, stirring once or twice to make sure the rice cooks evenly and adding more chicken broth if the mixture seems dry.

4. Cooking is done when the rice is tender. If the rice is done while there is still liquid left in the slow cooker, remove the lid and cook on high to let the liquid evaporate.

Roll the chicken filling and your choice of optional ingredients into a warm tortilla and form a burrito, or put the filling into a bowl, or into some warm, pre-made hardshell tacos and add your choice of toppings. Serves 6 to 8.

Desert Theatreworks presents ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ at Indio Performing Arts Center The legendary musical theater duo Rodgers and Hammerstein provide the inspiration for this intimate night of beautiful songs. You’ll hear more than 30 tunes created by the 20th century Broadway icons, including numbers from “Carousel,” “The King and I,” “Oklahoma,” “South Pacific,” “The Sound of Music,” “Cinderella” and more. More so than any composer and lyricist who have written for the stage, the songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein have become an integral part of our everyday lives. “Some Enchanted Evening” showcases many of these favorites such as “It might as well be spring,” “I have dreamed”, “There is nothing like a dame,” and “Out of my dreams.”

This musical revue is an opportunity to examine familiar songs more closely and out of context. It can be like listening to the music and lyrics for the first time. Trust the songs. Let the lyrics tell you what the songs are about. Remember that the lyrics were written first, and the music followed. But above all, let the songs be “stars”.

They don’t need gimmicks and glitter, just five winning performers who will fall in love with each

other and with the songs and then share all of this love with our audience. If we can achieve this, the audience will have an enchanting evening indeed.

After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammertein II joined forces in 1943 to create the most consistently fruitful and successful partnership in the American musical theatre. “Some Enchanted Evening,” one of South Pacific’s bestknown songs, exemplifies Rodgers and Hammerstein’s approach to musical drama. On the surface, “Some Enchanted Evening” looks like a simple love song. It describes the moment of “love at first sight,” when you see the face of a lovely stranger across a crowded room.” Rodgers treats this simple sentiment, however, with devout seriousness, and writes a powerful melody to accompany it.
