Cruise into the New Year at the Living Desert’s Mildly Wild ’50s Sock-Hop Celebration

ruise into 2019 with a ‘50s sock-hop theme at the year’s most mildly wild party at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens on Monday, December 31, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The celebration includes themed food stations, full cash bar, followed by live entertainment and dancing, plus animal encounters.

Guests will experience all of the fun and excitement of New Year’s Eve earlier, as The Living Desert will offer a complimentary champagne toast when the ball drops on the east coast at 9 p.m.

“This event has become an annual tradition and is a wonderful way to celebrate the New Year, while benefiting our educational

and conservation programs,” said Dawn Petrick, Director of Park Services and Guest Relations.

“We invite everyone to dress the part and join us at the sock-hop this New Year’s Eve.” Guests are encouraged to dress in ‘50s sock-hop attire. The event is open to those 18 years and older and is an indoor/outdoor event.

Tickets for the Mildly Wild New Year’s Eve Party are $125 per person and can be purchased online at: Livingdesert.org. For more information call 760-3465694, ext. 2111. Tickets include: champagne toast (21+), one drink ticket, dinner, animal encounters and live entertainment.

Short on Resolutions?

Try These on for Size What are you going to do in 2019?

Do you have a list of resolutions all ready to go?

Making a resolution to go to the gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday is all well and good, and sometimes we keep those types of vows. Mostly we don’t. Resolutions that we’re most likely to keep involve doing things for others.

If you’re more comfortable taking small bites, rather than committing to doing something for a whole year, try making one resolution for every month or season of the year.

Sign up to be a financial assistant to someone who needs help writing checks and managing bills. You’ll need a background check, but knowing another senior needs to get his or her bills paid will keep you on track.

Join a community crew that does free repairs to the homes of other seniors. Can you paint a wall? Put clear plastic on windows

to keep out cold drafts? Organize volunteers? Anything you can do will be appreciated.

Start a vegetable garden in the spring, perhaps in a plot in a community space, and give the bounty to the food bank. Go every few days to water and weed. Knowing that the plants need care will keep you motivated.

Volunteer over the summer to deliver books to people who can’t get out, or shelve books at the library. Be an usher or sell tickets at the theater group. Your whole community will thank you.

Be a relief delivery driver for Meals on Wheels or deliver pharmacy prescriptions. You might be the only person the recipient sees all day.

Do you see the pattern here?

New Year’s Eve Traditions from Around the World Need more luck or good fortune next year? Try these New Year’s Eve traditions from around the world.

Just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, the Japanese eat soba noodles. The Toshikoshi Soba, which means “year crossing buckwheat noodle” has lots of symbolism. The long noodle denotes the crossing from one year to the next and the easy-to-nibble noodles signify a letting go of the past year’s regrets, before the fresh start the new year brings.

In Spain, with 12 seconds remaining until the New Year, people eat

12 green grapes to bring good luck in the coming year. It’s thought to be bad luck if you can’t eat them all by the final midnight chime.

The French ring in the New Year with a huge feast, commonly know as le réveillon de la SaintSylvestre. The meal is full of traditional, decadent eats, including foie gras, oysters, lobster and escargot. And, just like in the U.S., champagne is the drink of choice.

In rural areas of Canada, New Year’s Eve is a time to spend ice fishing with friends. Celebrations on the frozen ponds and rivers

tend to last all night as buddies fish in the open or in purposebuilt fishing shacks and perhaps catch a fish or two to help celebrate the coming year.

On the last night of the year, Colombians place three potatoes—one peeled, one unpeeled, and one half peeled—under their bed. At midnight, they pull out the first potato they grab. Peeled means they’ll have financial problems, unpeeled indicates abundance, and half peeled… well, somewhere in between.

As you wear items and they go through the laundry, put them in the closet facing in as normal. It won’t take long for you to see what you’re NOT wearing, and you can donate or get rid of the excess.

• Do yourself a favor and pick up red and green festive party items, like plates and cups, plain cloth napkins and foil-wrapped candies, at after-holiday discounts.

You can use the red items for Valentine’s Day and the green for St. Patrick’s Day with none the wiser.

• Resolutions are meant to help us focus on improvement, not to be a source of stress. Take some time to think about the times and situations that negatively impacted you in the past year. Instead of making a blanket resolution (lose

weight, travel, watch less TV) come up with a few things that will have a specific positive effect on your life (go to the gym or take a walk three mornings per week, prep cook for the week ahead on Sunday afternoons).

• DIY shower spray: Add one part vodka to two parts water, plus a few drops of essential oil (peppermint or tea tree) to a spray bottle.

Recipe of the Week The Kitchen Diva

SPICY SWEET POTATO AND BLACK BEAN CHILI • 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 medium-large sweet potato, peeled and diced • 1 large onion, diced • 1 medium carrot, diced • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 2 tablespoons chili powder • 4 teaspoons ground cumin • 1 teaspoon ground chipotle chili • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 1/2 teaspoon light brown sugar • 2 1/2 cups water • 2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed • 1 (14-ounce) can diced tomatoes with juice • 4 teaspoons lime juice

• 3/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro • 1/2 cup non-fat Greek yogurt • 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar or Colby Jack cheese 1. Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the sweet potato, onion and carrot; cook, stirring often, until the onion is beginning to soften, about 4 minutes. Add tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Add the garlic, chili powder, cumin, chipotle, salt and brown sugar; cook, stirring constantly, for 30 seconds.

2. Add water and bring to a simmer. Cover, reduce heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer and cook until the sweet potato is tender, 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Add beans, tomatoes and lime juice; increase heat to high and return to a simmer, stirring often.

Reduce heat and simmer until slightly reduced, about 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in half

Holiday Pairing Perfection Festive Flavors and Seasonal Sips

T

he holidays are the perfect time to gather with friends and family to celebrate the season. Take the stress out of hosting by shopping at a store like ALDI for your holiday musthaves, including everything from food and wine to holiday decor and even gifts for nearly anyone on your list, helping you to save time and money.

Blue Cheese and Walnut Mousse

Recipe courtesy of ALDI Test Kitchen Prep time: 5 minutes • Cook time: 15 minutes Yield: 10 servings

• 2 tablespoons Pure Avocado Oil • 3 large yellow onions, sliced • 5 ounces Blue Cheese Crumbles • 8 ounces Cream Cheese • Black Pepper, to taste • 1 cup Heavy Whipping Cream • 8 ounces Chopped Walnuts • 5 cucumbers, thinly sliced In large pan, heat oil and saute onions until brown and caramelized.

In food processor, combine blue cheese crumbles and cream cheese. Process until smooth. Season with pepper, to taste.

In medium bowl, using hand mixer, whisk cream until soft peaks form. Fold in cheese mixture and 4 ounces chopped walnuts.

Top cucumber slices with mousse, caramelized onions and remaining chopped walnuts. Finish by grinding black pepper over top for garnish.

Pair each serving with glass of La Rue Cotes de Provence Rosé.

Tip: Mousse can also be served as a dip with baguette slices.

Party Poppers

Recipe courtesy of ALDI Test Kitchen Prep time: 25 minutes • Cook time: 15 minutes Yield: 36 poppers

• 8 ounces Pitted Dates • 4 ounces Brie Cheese Round • 6 ounces Slivered Almonds • 1 1/2 pounds Hickory Bacon • 2 teaspoons Black Pepper Heat oven to 375 F. Cut dates in half, lengthwise.

Cut brie into bite-size pieces, about the size of peanuts.

Place one piece of Brie and four almond pieces on each open date half. Place other half on top.

Quarter bacon slices, wrap tightly around stuffed dates and secure with toothpicks. Sprinkle with pepper.

Line baking sheet with foil and place wrapped dates on top. Bake 15 minutes, or until bacon is crispy. Serve warm.

Pair each serving with glass of Peaks & Tides Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cranberry Shrimp Ceviche Cups

Recipe courtesy of ALDI Test Kitchen Prep time: 20 minutes + 1 hour chill time Cook time: 3 minutes Yield: 16 ceviche cups

• 1 1/2 teaspoons Iodized Salt, • 16 ounces Black Tiger Shrimp, • 1 cup Dried Cranberries • 1/2 red onion, roughly chopped • 1/2 cup fresh parsley • 1/2 jalapeno, roughly chopped • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice • 1/4 teaspoon Crushed Red Pep per or Ground Black Pepper • 1 teaspoon Oregano

To assemble: Spoon ceviche (about 4-5 shrimp each) into small clear cups or glasses. Garnish with tortilla chips, lime wedges and fresh cranberries, if desired.

Pair each serving with glass of William Wright Chardonnay.

Bring medium pot of water to boil.

Season with 1 teaspoon salt. Add shrimp and cook 3 minutes. Immediately plunge cooked shrimp into ice water bath. Peel shrimp and place in flat dish.

Social Security Matters Ask Rusty — Maximizing Spousal Benefits Dear Rusty: My husband turns 68 next year, and I will be turning 66. He plans on continuing to work and retiring at age 70 to maximize his monthly Social Security benefits. I am retiring next year due to a spinal injury. Since my monthly maximum is based on his, we are trying to figure out when mine should be activated to earn the highest benefit amount.

Do I need to wait until he reaches age 70 to maximize mine, or can I activate it next year at the lesser amount and would Social Security adjust it to the higher rate when he activates his? Signed: Timing is Everything Dear Timing: Your eventual spousal benefit from your husband’s Social Security record will be based upon his full retirement age benefit amount, not on the increased benefit he will get by waiting until he is age 70 to claim. Thus, you don’t gain anything by waiting past your full retirement age and until he claims his at 70 to start your own benefits. If you will be 66 next year, I assume your year of birth is 1953, which means your full retirement age (FRA) is 66. That means at age 66 you will get 100% of the ben-

efit you have earned from a lifetime of working. By starting your benefits at age 66, your husband can then file a “restricted application for spousal benefits only” and collect 50% of the amount you are collecting, while allowing his own Social Security retirement benefit to continue to grow (it’s already growing, but without him getting a spousal benefit from your record).

He can do this because he was born before the January 2, 1954 cutoff date after which that option was eliminated. By filing the restricted application after you start your benefits, your husband can collect a spousal benefit from you while he is still earning delayed retirement credits (DRCs) for himself, which will mean his benefit at age 70 will be 32% more than it would have been at his FRA of 66. Then, when your husband claims his own benefit at age 70, you should apply for your spousal benefit, which will be 50% of his FRA benefit amount (you get that if it is more than you are getting from your own work record). And in the intervening months between when you apply at age 66 and when he claims his own benefits at age 70, your hus-

Sleep disorders The American Sleep Association estimates that as many as 70 million of us suffer from a sleep disorder of one type or another. Some people snore, some talk in their sleep and still others walk in their sleep, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. But, says AMAC we’re in the digital age and so there is new disorder that has been identified -- sleep texting. And, as you might expect, this 21st Century affliction

runs rampant among adolescents and millennials. They fall asleep with their smart phones nearby and during the night they send messages to their friends. And, in most cases they don’t remember doing it when they wake up in the morning.
