Today, Two Bunch Palms is a 100-acre getaway for the rich and famous, an oasis of quiet and relaxation in the unlikely town of Desert Hot Springs. Two Bunch Palms is a rock-walled 24-hour security fortress surrounding 44 bungalows, most with private backyards and patios. Each bungalow rents from $200 to $800 a day. The amenities offered include romantic dinners, herbal steam baths, salt herbal treatments, deep massages, facials and mud baths.

Faux Chic A “pricey” Santa Monica, California shoe store attracted quite a crowd of local fashionistas recently when it opened. According to the Association of Mature American Citizens, the chic crowd ate up shoes undeterred by price tags as high as $600. Some of the chic shoppers even boasted that they were getting bargains considering the quality and trendy styles of the footwear on display. What else would you expect in a shoe store with the name Palessi? In fact, the name

should have given the stunt away as it is a bit too close to the name of that bargain chain of shoe stores that goers by the name of Payless. The company came clean and launched a promotional campaign noting that the shoes the in-crowd was willing to pay hundreds of dollars for sale for $20 to $40 a pair at its stores. New Scam Has You Pay With Gift Card If you get calls from people claiming to be from the utility company or an alleged family member, or even the Internal Revenue Service, and they try to scare you into making immediate payment, it’s surely a scam. One way to tell it’s a scam is if they insist you pay with gift cards, likely a Google Play or iTunes card. This is a theft problem that has increased 270 percent since 2015. It can be tempting ... especially if you’re told you’ve won something and only need to send a gift

card to cover postage. You might be told that you missed jury duty and can post your bail with a gift card instead of being arrested. Or you might be told that you can get certain medical supplies that Medicare won’t pay for, or that you have a computer bug and they can fix it for you. There’s no end to the scenarios these thieves can think up. Even if you fall for the scam, once might not be enough. Once they know how to manipulate you, they’ll come back again and again. A note of warning: If you’re in a store buying a gift card and the clerk tells you it might be a scam,

listen. They see this all the time and they’re trying to help you. There are at least seven different gift card scams out there right now. To learn more, go online to the Federal Trade Commission and see ftc.gov/giftcards. If you’ve paid for something with a gift card, let the FTC know. The FTC website has the phone numbers of many companies that issue gift cards, including Amazon, MoneyPak and Steam. Also go online to giftcards.com and read up on gift card scams. CHRISTMAS CHICKEN • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 2 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 3/4 cup flour • 8 ounces pasta, like spaghetti, linguine or bucatini • 1/4 cup butter • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1 large yellow onion, chopped • 1 (28-ounce) can Cento or San Marzano crushed tomatoes • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1/8 teaspoon cloves or nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon sugar • 1 (15-ounce) can Italian or whole green beans • 1 cup fresh basil, cut into ribbons • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan or Romano cheese 1. Cover the chicken breasts with plastic wrap and pound each piece to an even thickness, about 1 inch in the thickest parts. Remove the plastic and sprinkle each piece of chicken on both sides with 1 tablespoon of the poultry season, 1/2 teaspoon each of the salt and freshly ground pepper, and 1/8 teaspoon of the cayenne pepper. 2. Add 1/2 tablespoon of the poultry seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper to the flour and mix well. Press the chicken into the flour on both sides, shake off excess and set aside.

3. Make the pasta according to package directions. Meanwhile, heat the butter and olive oil in a large heavy skillet over medium heat until sizzling, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the seasoned chicken and pan-fry for 4 to 5 minutes on each side until golden brown. Place the chicken on a plate and set aside. 4. Add the onions to the oil and cook for 2 minutes. Add in the tomatoes, garlic, the remaining poultry seasoning, salt, pepper and cayenne, and the cloves or nutmeg and sugar. 5. Turn heat to simmer, and cook to a sauce-like mixture, about 5-7 minutes. Cut the chicken into strips and add to the sauce. Stir in the drained green beans and half of the basil. 6. Top the drained pasta with the sauce and stir to combine over medium heat, about 1 to 2 minutes. To serve, sprinkle the pasta with the remaining basil and the grated cheese. Serves 4-6.
