‘Great Russian Nutcracker’ presented by the Moscow Ballet at McCallum Theatre

T

his production of the Moscow Ballet’s “Great Russian Nutcracker” features overthe-top production and worldclass Russian artists. Larger than life puppets, nesting dolls and hand-crafted costumes bring the holiday spirit to life.

Tchaikovsky’s classic score for this Christmas story opens with a “Miniature Overture,” dur-

ing which magical Uncle Drosselmeyer prepares his life-sized Christmas gifts for niece Masha and nephew Fritz at Mayor Stahlbaum’s family home later that evening. The music sets the fanciful holiday mood by using upper registers of the orchestra exclusively as the curtain soon opens to reveal the iconic Moscow city skyline and guests arriving for the Christmas Eve Party.

Seniors Raising Grandchildren A show of hands, please -- how many of us are suddenly raising our grandchildren just when we were about to retire? Or maybe after we’ve already retired and have fewer resources and income? There are 2 1/2 million of us doing just that.

It wasn’t that long ago that we were on our own if a family situation fell apart and it became necessary for us to take in our grandchildren and raise them. Now we might be able to get some help.

A new law was enacted this summer -- The Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act -- after being supported by 40 different advocacy organizations.

The new law will create an advisory council working under the Department of Health and Human Services to figure out what’s needed to help the children when it comes to health, nutrition and education, as well as help with our own mental

and physical health. The council is supposed to research how to raise children, locate resources and so on, with an emphasis on children affected by drug addiction. The council was given six months to get their ducks in a row. That six months is now up.

If you’re hooked up with Social Services, give them a call and ask what help you can now get from this new law. We’re supposed to get a one-stop source for contacts and information.

Meanwhile, there are other places to seek help. Start with Grandfamilies.org [grandfamilies.org], which has information and support for those who are raising their grandchildren. Look for the state fact sheets to see what is available in your state.

OVEN-BAKED OMELETS The pre-cooked toppings for these oven-baked omelets can be set up buffet style and quickly re-heated in the microwave, using an electric skillet or on the stovetop in a sauté pan.

• Cooking oil spray, butter or vegetable oil for sauté and baking pans • 6 large eggs, separated • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon pepper • 1 tablespoon grated onion • 3 tablespoons flour • 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning • 1/2 cup each, pre-cooked meat and vegetable toppings* • Cheese for sprinkling or topping: Parmesan, Cheddar, American, Gouda, Goat cheese, etc. *sausage, Canadian bacon, ham, pork or turkey bacon, black beans, mushrooms, baby spinach leaves, chopped green onions, zucchini, squash, chopped onions or bell peppers, sliced black olives, etc.

1. Heat oven to 350 F. Grease two 8-inch round cake pans with cooking oil spray, butter or vegetable oil. Place the pans in the oven to heat. In a large bowl, beat together egg whites and 3/4 teaspoons of the salt with an electric hand mixer until soft peaks form. Do not overbeat.

2. In another bowl, mix the egg yolks, remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, pepper, grated onion, flour and Italian seasoning. Beat until the mixture is thick and thoroughly blended. Gently fold in the egg whites. Spread mixture in the hot cake pans. Bake for 15 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

3. Use a knife to loosen the omelets from the sides of the pans. In-

vert the layers, bottom-side down, onto serving plates. Cut the omelets into wedges. Cover the pieces with foil to keep them warm.

4. Have your guests select the pre-cooked meats and vegetables of their choice. Add 1/2 teaspoon oil to medium sauté pan and heat over medium-high heat.

Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of the pre-made tomato topping per serving to the pan, and heat for 2 minutes over low heat. Add your guest’s topping selections to the hot tomato topping and mix until warm, about 2 minutes.

Spoon the topping mixture over the omelet slice. Sprinkle with cheese, if desired. Serve immediately with sliced fruit and hot biscuits or rolls. Serves 12.

NOTE: If using a microwave, mix 2 to 3 tablespoons of the tomato topping and your guest’s pre-cooked topping choices together in a bowl.

Micro-cook on high for 1 minute.

Tomato Topping: • 2 tablespoons of olive oil • 8 ounces cherry tomatoes, diced • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning • 1 clove garlic, finely minced • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon pepper Using a medium pan over medium-high heat, heat the oil. Add cherry tomatoes, Italian seasoning. garlic, salt and pepper. Sauté for 5 to 8 minutes, until the tomatoes begin to soften.

Santa was overwhelmed when 23 sets of twins, and then some, showed up recently to have their Christmas picture taken at the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL. Some of the 23 moms brought along a non-twin sibling or two and, as one of them put it, things got a little chaotic, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. 1. Use recycled materials as giftwrap. Wrap your gifts in recycled household items such as old newspapers and magazines, discarded maps, left over wallpaper and even gently worn clothes.
