Shopping local sends dollars toward little league, football games and other philanthropic efforts
BY MINDY SCHILLER of the Auburn Journal
W
the recent fires,” she said, “it’s that sense of community we need most of all. “When things get rough, you rely on others in your community. You don’t go into a big-box store and say, ‘Oh, I feel supported.’ But we actually do try to build community.”
e’ve all been there before: Christmas is a week away, holiday commitments are piling up, and we still have four people on our list whose gifts we haven’t bought. With carpools to drive and lunches to pack, Amazon.com is looking pretty tempting right about now. A few clicks of the mouse and we can check one more item off our rapidlyexpanding to-do list.
In fact, said Seitzinger, that’s one of the things she’s proudest of at Roper’s. “We happen to sell jewelry, which is nice, but that’s not who we are. It’s really about the role we play in the community. That’s our identity,” she said.
But shopping on Amazon comes with a price that may not hit your credit card statement. It means you’re not shopping locally, and the money you spend is leaving your community. Which, according to Auburn Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Keith Nesbitt, means your local businesses are not bringing in the much-needed funds that allow them to support philanthropic efforts in the community. Think little league, football games or the high school band. “It’s our duty as a village to support the people who support the causes we love,” said Nesbitt. “Every dollar spent locally circulates about six to seven times.” Peggy Seitzinger, general manager at local business Roper’s Jewelers, echoed Nesbitt’s statement. “It’s absolutely a circle everyone benefits from,” Seitzinger said. “My kids’ little league was sponsored by

local business, and that holds true for every kind of activity in a small town like Auburn.” But there are other reasons to shop locally, as well. “The experience of shopping in downtown or Old Town Auburn can’t be matched by going to a mall or a big box store,” Nesbitt said. “You have all these historic
buildings, quaint places to eat, unique stores that have personality — it brings back days of yore, when things weren’t as crowded and frantic, and felt more like the holidays. There’s something sentimental about it.” Seitzinger says it goes even deeper than that. “When you think about
Lynn Carpenter, owner of Serendipity here in Auburn, opened her business with her husband in 1984. Then it was Carpenters Corners. For a store like hers, which specializes in gifts, cards, and other sentimental items, small business-shopping is a nobrainer. “We’re small, which means we deal with smaller suppliers, and so our merchandise is more unique than the big boys who work with the large suppliers.” For example, she said, her popular fair-trade Christmas ornaments, which sell all yearround, are hand made by a village in Thailand. Carpenter says she hand-picks everything
in the store, from the floral table runners to every greeting card. Not exactly something you’ll find at Wal-Mart. “When you think about it,” said Chamber of Commerce’s Nesbitt, “by the time you figure in the gas mileage, wear and tear on the car, and aggravation from all the crowds,” the value of going to a large mall really isn’t there.” Carpenter agrees. “We still seem to need to go to Target now and then — venturing further afield on some occasions,” Carpenter said. “But for the most part I think Auburn’s pretty complete.” After all, said Seitzinger, what are the holidays really about? “It’s not about the gifts under the tree, you know? It’s about showing our loved ones how much we love them.” And, she added, “This year especially, it’s about being grateful you’re in a community.” Which, according to Carpenter, we are. “I think everyone likes Auburn and I’m one of those people,” Carpenter said. “We have everything we need here.” Benefits of shopping locally — Aside from the financial benefits of keeping dollars in a community, shopping local is what helps create a community. Small businesses create relationships with their customers and really add to the sense of community.

2. Porch rockers “They’re a little different from what most people would expect,” said Potter, “but they last a lifetime.” A porch rocker is a perfect way to transform a house into a home. Sierra Timberline distributes a variety of high-end furniture manufacturers, including
Ebel, Jensen Leisure, Lloyd Flanders and Mallin, to name a few. They also carry indoor furniture as well. 3. Wind chimes “It’s the kind of thing most people would never buy for themselves, but they enjoy them so much.” Wind chimes enhance an outdoor space by adding ambiance, and Sierra Timberline has a wide selection. 4. Barbecue Sierra Timberline sells a variety of hearths, fire pits, gas stoves, and pizza ovens. But Potter says the most common Christmas gift in this department is a barbecue grill. True, it’s more of a gift for the family than for a sole recipient. But if your spouse happens to be an outdoor chef, this is the gift they’ll remember.

Festively decorated Christmas trees are grouped by ornament theme: candyland, forest, snowflake, to name a few. It’s here that Potter most enjoys watching customers do their holiday shopping. “We have more and more families who bring their children to choose the one ornament they’ll bring to an ornament exchange or give as a gift. ... They come back every year, and it’s such a small thing, but it’s so important to them.” Sierra Timberline is located at 324 Idaho Maryland Road, Grass Valley.
