M
usic lovers and likers can prepare for a rousing show featuring a rotating collective of virtuosic vocalists with sizzling stage presence. Postmodern Jukebox performs pop music in a time machine, reimagining Top 40 hits by artists such as Beyoncé, Celine Dion, Radiohead and more with vintage, Gatsby-esque glam and a contagious energy that will have audiences’ toes tapping. The group’s Welcome to the Twenties 2.0 Tour is intended to prepare the world for a new decade, one that creator Scott Bradlee hopes will see a return to the style and craftsmanship that typified the music of past generations. Bradlee records new arrange-
ments every week for PMJ’s legion of fans. The multi-talented collective reimagines contemporary pop, rock and R&B hits in the style of various yesteryears, from swing to doo-wop and ragtime to Motown. Imagine blending the 21st-century party vibe of Miley Cyrus or the minimalist angst of Radiohead with the crackly warmth of a vintage 78 or the plunger-muted barrelhouse howl of a forgotten Kansas City jazzman. Bradlee’s choice of material ranges from the ‘80s hard rock of Guns N’ Roses to hits as recent as 2015’s Justin Bieber plea “Sorry.” They’re rendered by a rotating cast of musicians and singers in fashions that date back to a time when Axl, Slash and Bieber’s parents had yet
to be born, a time of street corner harmonies and torch singers, blues belters and golden-voiced crooners. Started by Bradlee in 2009, Postmodern Jukebox (PMJ) has gone on to amass over one billion YouTube views with 3.5 million subscribers and have chalked up more than 1.7 million fans on Facebook. For the past half-decade, PMJ has toured the world, playing hundreds of shows to sold-out houses on six continents. They’ve also performed on shows like “Good Morning America,” topped iTunes and Billboard charts, and caught the attention of NPR Music, NBC News and a wide array of celebrity fans. They have sold out their shows in more than 60 countries around the world.

on’t for one minute fall for the ditzy routine (but you are supposed to chuckle at it). As they say, one must be very smart to act dumb. Rita Rudner, the nine-time Las Vegas Comedian of the Year, has the longest-running solo comedy show in the history of Las Vegas with over 14 years on the strip. Known for her thought-provoking one-liners and observations on everyday life, Rudner keeps it real talking about the things that amuse her – and us. She developed her trademark epigrammatic style and took a full-time leap from chorus lines to punch lines
in the early eighties. She and her husband, Martin Bergman, have collaborated on several scripts, including “Peter’s Friends,” “A Weekend in the Country” and “Unfunny Girl.” After headlining at residency shows in Las Vegas at MGM Grand, New York, New York, Harrah’s and the Venetian, she is now officially the longest-running solo comedy show in the history of Vegas. Whether as a writer, TV performer or stand-up comedian, Rudner has cemented her place among showbiz legends with her endearingly daffy and oh-so-brilliant delivery.

ou may recognize them as the guys with the black ties and white tennies, but they are best known as the world’s most popular brass quintet, pioneering an entertaining format that has influenced numerous other chamber groups. Masters of concert presentations, Canadian Brass has developed a uniquely engaging stage presence and rapport with audiences. Each concert showcases styles like Baroque, Dixieland and new compositions, all served up with lively dialogue, heartwarming humor and theatrical effects. Whatever the delivery, the music is central and performed with utmost dedication, skill and excellence.
The varied repertoire features brass standards as well as a wide-ranging library of original arrangements, including Renaissance, festive holiday tunes, classical works, marches, ragtime, soft rock, Latin, jazz, big band, Broadway and Christian music as well as popular songs and standards. This game-changing group has performed in virtually every major concert hall in the world. They have transformed a previously neglected group of instruments with a limited repertoire into a versatile and vital ensemble. These talented artists can play everything from Gabrieli to Gershwin, bringing the excitement of brass music to new audiences.

I
must admit, adventurous eaters, they had me at Taco Tuesdays, and I didn’t want to leave after Happy Hour, where $5 cabs, well cocktails, and a buck off your beer, just makes you want to call friends and invite them over. (The microbrews here are big winners in my book.) But what really had me coming back for repeat visits was something that came to me naturally. These folks truly care about what they’re creating and offering their guests. That said, prepare to feel loved. The exciting and packed menu includes everything from the freshest salads and unique appetizers to traditional American favorites, along with plenty of seafood, steak, pasta and specialty sandwiches and burgers. Lunches deliver a bountiful array of culinary diversity. Where else
can you order a bronzed swordfish sandwich or an albacore tuna melt on a fresh roll or sourdough and have it become a bona fide Instagram star? Something rare: the gluten-free penne chicken pasta, where banza chickpea pasta, artichokes, locally-sourced spinach, roasted peppers and cherry tomatoes, are enhanced with a lemon pepper cream. There’s so much on this menu, all of which are a cornucopia of pleasure to the palate. Take note: brunch is till 2 p.m. Dinners are a dream come true and it’s a testament to the chef and staff for making these meals actual events to savor. The appetizer menu entices—from scallop carpaccio to oysters Rockefeller—as much as the main offerings. Other sharables include prime rib nachos—a meal unto itself—and cast iron baked Pennsylvania brie. Top choices this
month: the slow-cooked prime rib, pan-seared pork chop, bourbonbraised short ribs and the caprese and garlicked prawns. Add an accompaniment like truffle tater tots or a loaded baked potato to make the meal stand out even more. There’s more. Bar bites are served all day, but during happy hour, prices are reduced. Among the top draws are whitefish tacos (two plump wonders)—definitely worth bragging about thanks, in part, to its jalepeño ranch kick. Just as dreamy are the short ribs tacos, where—get this!—smoked gouda and an avocado salsa are perfect couplings in a flour tortilla that also includes a peppy horseradish cream. Other notables: roasted brussels sprouts, California cauliflower, and the baked meatballs. Heaven … and then some.

DINING Adventurous Mexican fare awaits at Loco Charlie’s By Charlie Price Loco Charlie’s Mexican Grill 1751 N. Sunrise Way Palm Springs Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday-Sunday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 760-832-6474 lococharlies.com
T
here’s so much to appreciate at Loco Charlie’s—the authentic Mexican cuisine and the attention given to its preparation— but allow your eyes to wander down its lengthy list of combination plates and you’re destined to find something filling and memorable for lunch. At the top of our list: two fish tacos. For under $11, two fresh corn tortillas arrived filled with breaded fish topped Mexican cole slaw, and one of the finest sauces— chipotle Baja and pico de gallo. The flavors truly pop. Similarly, the grilled salmon fish tacos are particularly well crafted. There’s a nice
array of chile relleno offerings here and even a hard-shelled taco that’s a kick. We also appreciate Loco Charlie’s seasonal specials, where turkey tacos and enchiladas and sweet corn, pork and tomato tamales suddenly become hard choices to choose from. A major standout: the venue’s sopa loca. This smokey chipotle broth filled with shrimp, white fish and veggies is sublime. And the Mexican meatball soup gets a major thumbs up. But hey—don’t wait for lunch. The great things about Loco Charlie’s is also how much it offers on its menu. Breakfasts are divine here and not to be missed, either.
Diversity and farm-fresh wonders pepper the Cheeky’s menu By Charlie Price Cheeky’s 622 N. Palm Canyon Dr. Palm Springs Wednesday-Monday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. 760-327-7595 cheekysps.com
T
he menu changes weekly here, which is part of the allure, but whether you’re a frequent Cheeky’s customer or coming back to explore the meals more deeply, you’re bound to be impressed with how much is offered— and how fresh it is. This could be perhaps one of the Valley’s most robust menus and Cheeky’s serves all of its food with aplomb. The eggs are organic and the sausages homemade, making breakfasts here quite the standout. Meat lovers will appreciate the finer nuances that can be found in such things as maple sage sausages or a marvelous cheddar thyme
hashbrowns, which accompanied a recent meal with a lovely scramble. There’s a bit of artistry to be had in these early-morning creations. For instance, fresh corn pancakes and bacon works well with an added zing of blueberries, and any place that offers a bona fide bacon bar (bacon flight for $7, anyone?) is fine by us. Lunches keep things organic and über fresh, too. You can choose from soups, made fresh daily, and grass-fed beef burgers to the freshest salads this side of Cathedral City and something as inventive as a yam sandwich. Bravo Cheeky’s.
Fish, pizzas, pastas — L’Olivo enchants By Charlie Price L’Olivo 333 N. Palm Canyon Dr. Palm Springs Monday-Friday 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. 760-327-0382 lolivopalmsprings.com
DECEMBER 2018
O
wners Sal Zavala and Michael Iglesias have created a culinary haven on North Palm Canyon Drive, a portal where the freshest Italian meals are as filling as they are inventive. You may have heard about the now-famous ahi tuna tartare here—there’s a bit of magic happening between its avocado, cucumber, tomato and basil and it’s definitely a menu item that must be experienced. Still, appetizers such as L’Olivo’s marvelous caprese tower should not be passed up either—it’s a bountiful plate filled with fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, angelically blessed with an aged balsamic glaze. Major yum. Soups are prepared daily
and so fresh—the broth in the minestrone is particularly enchanting. All salads are noteworthy. However pizzas, pastas, fish and meats all compete for attention. The pizza menu is applauded—a prominent meat-lover offering is just as filling as the vegetariana, with its mix of roasted seasonal vegetables. From the pasta menu, consider the robust L’Olivo meatballs—made with a magic tomato sauce we think. (Although the vodka rose delivers a punch with its cream sauce.) Order risottos with scampi and share with somebody who nabbed a stellar New England rack of lamb. Expertly prepared chicken and fish dishes? Of course. Dig in.

P
resented by West Coast Artists, this weekend of beauty and culture will keep your soul satisfied, and just in time for holiday shopping. The event showcases 100 artists presenting original work, including paintings in acrylic, oils and watercolors, photography, etchings, sculpture in clay, glass, metal, stone and wood, fine crafts, blown glass, turned wood, semi-precious jewelry, pottery, stained glass and an array of high-quality crafts. Artisans present unique styles of individually handcrafted functional and decorative pottery, raku, vessels and gourd art. Guests are invited to stroll between artists’ booths to view the works while interacting directly with the artists. Many pieces are one of a kind, and all works are available for purchase.
Collectors of all levels are welcome to browse and buy at this exceptional exhibition of visual and sensory art, encompassing contemporary, traditional, modern and southwest art styles. The experience is like a visit to a promenade in a European country with dozens of unique galleries, each with a different style or specialty, located in one convenient and scenic destination. The deal is sweetened by the proximity to the downtown Palm Springs boutiques, eateries, new hotels and the numerous galleries and studios in the Uptown Design District. The Festival’s founder, Ronda Mills, has produced many of the finest art festivals throughout Southern California, Arizona and Nevada for over 35 years. The artists provide
their patrons a finer appreciation that comes from sharing time and space with a piece of art, watching the sun color and shade a work over the course of an afternoon. This charming outdoor festival, set against the scenic palm trees and San Jacinto mountains of the Coachella Valley, brings together the artists and members of the public while emphasizing quality in the arts. Creations cover the spectrum for every taste and budget, and proceeds benefit a local arts-related, non-profit organization. For anyone who is a student of art or looking to decorate home or office, this is the ultimate go-to for the discriminating individual or the corporate collector. Parking and admission are free.

T
his production of the Moscow Ballet’s “Great Russian Nutcracker” features over-the-top production and world-class Russian artists. Larger than life puppets, nesting dolls and hand-crafted costumes bring the holiday spirit to life. Tchaikovsky’s classic score for this Christmas story opens with a “Miniature Overture,” during which magical Uncle Drosselmeyer prepares his life-sized Christmas gifts for niece Masha and nephew Fritz at Mayor Stahlbaum’s family home later that evening. The music sets the fanciful holiday mood by using upper registers of the orchestra exclusively as the curtain soon opens to reveal the iconic Moscow city skyline and guests ar-
riving for the Christmas Eve Party. Masha and her brother, mother and father celebrate the holiday together when beloved godfather Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives with his magical gifts. The story continues to enthrall the entire way through, centering around the beloved Nutcracker Doll, family bonds and a theme of peace and harmony. The show is distinguished by award-winning backdrops with three-dimensional effects. Between the sets, costumes, international influences, imagination, athleticism and grace, attendees will be thoroughly enchanted. Tickets to this performance make the perfect Christmas gift.

O
ne of the all-time stage classics is here just in time for the holidays. The story is based on the actual life of Maria von Trapp, who leaves an Austrian convent to serve as governess to the children of a widowed naval officer. Her growing rapport with the youngsters gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry—only to learn the news that the Captain must go off to war. The final collaboration between the famous Rodgers & Hammerstein, this musical won 10 Tony Awards in its original Broadway run and inspired the five-time Academy Award-win-
ning film starring Julie Andrews, remaining the most popular movie musical of all time. Audiences will recognize classic songs like “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “Do-Re-Mi.” Now in its sixth season, Desert Theatreworks (DTW) is an important part of the community cultural scene. This 2018-19 Season, DWT will again produce nine plays and musicals throughout the year. An added bonus is being able to visit the many cafés and restaurants in Old Town Indio for a pre-show supper or après-theater cocktail!

T
oucans Tiki Lounge is a magical place replete with tiki-themed décor, brightly painted exotic birds on the walls, tropical beverages and thumping music. Makes sense, as it was originally inspired by the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. It’s been consistently voted Palm Springs’ “Best Gay Bar,” “Best Dive Bar” and “Best Dance Club” thanks to its nightly events, dancing, DJs, gogo boys and creative cocktails. The tiki classics cocktail menu is extensive, with selections like mai tai, rum runner and Bahama mama ($12 each). The Toucans’ favorites menu pours up house margarita, Austin City cosmo and Palm Springs water ($9$11 each). Even more motivating is
the choice of 18 vodkas, eight rums, seven tequilas, eight scotches and 13 whiskeys for each concoction. Tuesdays and Thursdays, a fun list of drink specials like jolly rancher or Washington apple features half off pricing for only $4 or $5 each until midnight. Draft beer, bottled beer and wine are $4-$5 each, and there’s even champagne, mimosa or hibiscus for $3 per glass. Nearly every night spotlights different themed entertainment. On Latin Fever Mondays, there’s a latin drag show followed by latin dancing to DJ Judas. On Tuesdays, DJ Georgie, DJ Aaron C and DJ Ax command the dance floor starting at 10 p.m. Thursdays heat up even more at “The Playhouse with Jazmyn
Simone,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and dancing to DJ Aaron C starting at 11 p.m. Fridays are a mix of guys and gals, presenting Mischief with rotating DJs, gogo boys and a drag hostess. There are more DJs and dancing on “amped” Saturday nights, along with jello shots. On Sunday nights, the desert’s longest running drag show starring Tommi Rose and the Playgirls performs sets at 8 and 10 p.m., followed by a gogo midnight dance party. New owner Tara Lazar, force behind F-10 Creative, plans to add even more drink specials and continue the party vibe that has been so successful over the years. The beloved nightclub and bar may just be the second happiest place on earth.

DESERT ENTERTAINER
T
his opulent-looking, southwest inspired venue might make you think you’ve stepped onto the set of a high-budget movie, with 21,000 square feet and several patios with views of luscious landscaping and twin waterfalls. Happy hour at this fantasyland takes place every day of the week, with ample food, drink and fun, which is no surprise since it’s part of the Kaiser Family of Restaurants. The first thing you’ll likely notice are the three kitchens and a centrally located Southern Pride smoker wafting the sweet fragrance of apple, cherry and hickory woods. Happy hour drinks at the indoor saloon and outdoor palapa start with $2 off all draft beer, house wine and well drinks. The grande 17-ounce house
margarita is $9, blended with 100% blue agave platino tequila, also served in tasty variations of raspberry, peach, mango or strawberry. A long list of hand-crafted cocktails includes blood orange old fashioned ($14), stagecoach cooler or desert flower ($12 each). Specialty martinis offer grapefruit mint, blueberry lemon drop, the dirty classic, caramel apple, antioxidant and others ($10$12 each). JLR margaritas feature concoctions like pink cadillac, the spicy cucumber, mango Jack, skinny rita and fiery pineapple ($10-$14 each). Wines by the glass include canella prosecco ($9), whitehaven sauvignon blanc ($9.50), MacMurray ranch pinot noir ($12) and Louis martini cabernet sauvignon ($11), among many more.
Happy hour appetizers include items like prime beef sliders or loaded baked potato skins ($8.99), baja fish tacos or calamari fries ($9.99), bbq spare ribs ($18.99) and many more. Every afternoon, Jackalope also offers a Sunset Menu from 4 to 6 p.m. and on weekends there’s a prime rib special with 10 ounces for $29.95 and 14 ounces for $39.95, served during regular dinner hours. On Sundays, bottomless baskets of spare ribs are $19.79, on Tuesdays the menu offers $15 tacos + tequila, Wednesdays serve $13 burgers + beer and Thursdays are the day for $15 bbq + beer. Wine’d down Wednesdays feature half price bottles of wine (excluding happy hour wines). Roll cameras, eat, drink and action!

PALM SPRINGS: A HIKING DESTINATION Easy hikes for ‘non-hikers’ By Gary Willhide | Photos by Ken Larson
T
he desert, with its sandy soil, its treeless fields and its summer heat, may not seem like a good place to hike. The secrets to hiking in the Coachella Valley are the
majestic mountains in all directions and the canyons and foothills that surround them. Palm Springs has become a hiking destination for visitors from all over the world, and for good reason. From the top of the Tram to the Mecca hills, there are scores of scenic and
rewarding trails that are well maintained and well used. For this month, we’ll share three of the shorter hikes that are do-able by most visitors. Some other time, we’ll talk about the tough ones. Here are three easy to do walks:
Tahquitz Canyon 500 West Mesquite Ave. Palm Springs Admission Adults: $12.50, Children (6-12) $6, Military Free (With ID) 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Last hiker at 3:30 p.m.) 760-416-7044 tahquitzcanyon.com
T
ahquitz Canyon is one of the most beautiful and culturally sensitive areas of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Reservation. Its main attraction, a spectacular seasonal 60-foot waterfall, is accessible via a two-mile round trip hike from the Visitor Center. Hikers can go it alone or join ranger-led hikes throughout the day. Also seen on the trail are rock art, ancient irrigation systems,
native wildlife and plants. Located at the mountain end of Mesquite Avenue in Palm Springs, the Visitor Center offers exhibits, a display of artifacts, an observation deck and a theater for viewing “The Legend of Tahquitz Canyon.” There is an admission charge at Tahquitz Canyon. Call the Visitor Center at 760-4167044 for current charges and hours or visit tahquitzcanyon.com.

o visit to the Coachella Valley is complete without a trip to Joshua Tree National Park. It’s about an hour drive up Route 62 to the park entrance in the town of Joshua Tree. One hike that’s doable for non-hikers is the one-mile Barker Dam Loop. The trailhead is about 12 miles from the park entrance in the Wonderland of
Rocks area (get a park map). The interpretive trail leads into the Wonderland to the Barker Dam area, where it meanders along the lake. View the unique rock formations and high-mountain desert plants before returning to the parking area. There is an admission fee to the park. Visit nps.gov/jotr/index.htm.

ASTROLOGY
IN THE STARS
Astrology as news for the month of December By Charlie Price
T
he year races to a close. Are you ready, star child? To be sure, most of us can agree that 2018 will leave an imprint. Just what kind of imprint remains to be seen. Still, we survived more than five planets retrograde at one time this year—nice job working your way through all of that—and we’re moving out of the last retrograde of the year—Mercury Retrograde bows Dec. 6—so chin up, you delicious piece of cosmic stardust confined in human flesh, the road gets better. Well, a little less bumpy. This month, take stock of what you’ve learned this year. As in … with so many opportunities to review and renew, what conclusions have you come to about life? Where do you want to go from here? Are you willing to place even deeper trust within yourself now, more than ever before? Take note: The full moon (dubbed the Cold Moon) is Dec. 22, a day after winter solstice. Now, let’s see what you need to focus on this month.
to reflect. Realize and give thanks for all that you have. Something about romance makes you question yourself.
Aries: Take stock of your health dearest Aries. And then take stock of everything else in your life. Take some time to review the year and what you’ve accomplished, even the seemingly littlest things. And then look ahead. By the full moon a clearer picture of how you want to interact in the world will come into view.
Leo: You’d like to roar loudly about something right about now. If there’s an issue that has not been revolved this year, are you game? Can you resolve it before Dec. 31? Use the full moon as a time of making amends, or forgiving? Ask yourself if you’ve come on too strong? Or, in some cases, not strongly enough. This is your time to find some balance.
Taurus: Venus is a good position now to boost your career possibilities but first … assess all that you’ve done thus far on that front and ask yourself: Where have I consistently been leaking energy and how can I move beyond that in this next round. For the full moon, meditate on feeling as if you already have what you’re seeking.
Virgo: This Mercury Retro may have you tossing your hands up in the air and waving a white flag. Cheer up. You’re nearly through it. This would be a good time to begin exploring something new. Nobody can balance both the childlike innocence of new experiences and the Cathy-Chattiness of it all quite like you do. You’re ready for something new.
Gemini: Rest. We mean it—actually get some rest. If it feels as if you’ve been moving at lightspeed this year, juggling more balls than you would like, that’s because it’s true. Take some time around the full moon and the holidays to pamper yourself and consider implementing a different type of wellness regime in 2019. What would that be?
Libra: This year, you have been there quite a bit for other people. But what about you? Can you use this full moon and solstice as a time to ask yourself what you really need or would want from others? And … are you brave enough to ask for it? We say: Yes.
Cancer: You’re emotions may not have been as stable as you would have liked this year, best rest assured that sense of rootedness and connection are right here for the taking. Use the full moon and solstice as more than just a time

Scorpio: You’re so deep you can get lost in all that emotional depth, begging for somebody to alleviate your turmoil. This isn’t News at 11, but take note: YOU have to save yourself. I know, it’s not so glamorous, is it? The good news: You do Transformation like nobody’s business. Ask: “What do I really want in 2019?”
Sagittarius: Good news Sag. Jupiter is in your sign for an entire year and this is, well, downright delicious. Look for things to expand—not your waistline, but elsewhere, honey. Expect good fortune unlike any other you’ve ever experienced in your life and guess what? You’ll attract that in 2019. Do a money ritual around the full moon. Capricorn: Sometimes you need to chuck practicality. Stay with me here. We love that you’re so orderly but ask yourself: “Is there somebody else knocking on another door I have been resisting opening?” If this feels right, well, dear one: Open the new door. Keep family close by this month for support. Aquarius: A new year awaits and while your birthday is a few months away, it’s time to assess what you want to manifest for your new year. The middle of the month marks some kind of turning point for you. The full moon brings more clarity. Solstice allows you to go within. New Year’s gives you the ideas and a plan to move forward. Pisces: Don’t fret about Mercury Retro. It’s all an illusion at this point. At least, consider it as such. This month, ask yourself which fish you want to be in 2019: the cold one or the fun one? And then give yourself the go-ahead to love yourself more now. A family member makes you think. Don’t overthink it, though.
