I

f Canada and the United States were living beings, they might just be BFFs or even soulmates. The rapport between the two countries marks a friendship and spirit of cooperation defined by a shared border and close cultural and economic ties.

Many Americans find Canada to be enchanting and mysterious, prompting them to take on the role of explorer. Canada’s scenic beauty draws people in with a hypnotic effect, especially given the contrasts from America in landscape and climate.

Embarrassingly enough, I speak from experience. I’m well-traveled (thank you parents), but for whatever reason, I’ve never set foot in the Great White North, and I’m well aware that I’ve been missing out. That’s why the opportunity to be involved with Canada South has been a sheer delight, as it’s also given me an immersive education in Canada’s people, geography, history and culture that is

fascinating. Needless to say, a visit – soon – to Canada is on my personal bucket list.

This fall, there are some impressive entertainers who hail from Canada who will be performing right here in the Coachella Valley in the coming weeks, including the sultry songstress and jazz artist Diana Krall who is the subject of our cover feature. The chamber music quintet, Canadian Brass, will also be taking the stage just in time for the holidays, and their story is a fun one.

We’ve been sure to include a round-up of desert events and a collection of suggested day trips to take while here in southern California.

We’re fully aware that it’s important to stay abreast of what’s happening “back home”, so you’ll find a listing of some of the most engaging annual festivals and fairs taking place in Canada, from late fall into winter.

There are some uniquely splendid phenomena found in Canada, which is why

we’ve included a story on The Great Trail, the longest trail network in the world (and possibly the most gorgeous). We’re also excited to be adding a “Landmarks in Architecture” feature which, in this issue, focuses on the iconic castle resort known as the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.

hen Diana Krall’s silky smooth voice and coolly confident persona emerged onto the music scene in the early 1990s, the world was captivated.

There was no turning back. Twenty-five years later, the multiple Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist and world-renowned singer has established herself as an international phenom, touring extensively to sold-out audiences and appearing at premier jazz festivals and concert halls throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, just outside of Vancouver, Krall grew up in the western part of the country and began studying the piano when she was four years old, taking exams through The Royal Conservatory of Music and going on to play in her high school jazz band. However, she credits

Staying well connected to her Canadian roots, in 2000 Krall was awarded the Order of British Columbia... much of her musical experience to her father, a stride piano player with an extensive record collection. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1994, she signed with GRP Records and recorded “Only Trust Your Heart,” which marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma, a collaboration that would continue until his untimely passing in 2017.

Having previously visited Europe and South America, the “Turn Up the Quiet World Tour” has been wowing audiences with material from Krall’s stunning latest album as it returns her to the Great American Songbook. The album holds significant importance as it was the last recording Krall made with her long-time mentor and collaborator, the aforementioned producer Tommy LiPuma, before his sudden passing last year and is dedicated to his memory.

After Krall’s breakout in 1994, her success continued with her subsequent releases “All for You” and “Love Scenes.” But her watershed moment came in 1999 with the release of “When I Look in Your Eyes,” her first release for the historic Verve record label. The recording spent an unprecedented 52 weeks in the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Jazz chart, won two Grammy Awards and went platinum in the U.S. and Canada. Krall’s next album, “The Look of Love,” continued her international success and became a top ten seller on Billboard’s Top 200 Album charts.

Since then she has released a string of recordings that have created an impressive body of work, including recordings featured in several film soundtracks. Krall has expanded upon her role as a performer to include songwriting, producing and arranging and has brought her talents to collaborate with many other artists including Paul McCartney, Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett.

Speaking of which, Krall and Tony Bennett pay tribute to their shared love of the music of George and Ira Gershwin on their new collaborative album, “Love is Here to Stay,” released in September 2018. Tony Bennett, who has recently celebrated his 92nd birthday, has been friends with Krall for over 20 years. Get Your Poutine On

he secret is out. Americans have discovered and embraced the joy of poutine, the hearty snack of crispy French fries and cheese curds topped with a brown gravy (sometimes with variations including beef or pork). At one point a symbol of Québécois cultural pride, the French-Canadian fare is now the quintessential Canadian food, its popularity has extended beyond the northeastern United States to the west coast.

Poutine has even penetrated inner culinary circles with its presence as a selected dish on Iron Chef America.

Fortunately, the Coachella Valley is incorporating poutine on some of its menus. After all, what more could we possibly ask for right here in our own backyard, colloquially speaking? However, if you do find a little wanderlust creeping into your everyday sensibility, then you might want to consider some experiences and destinations that are just a drive away. Not only do they all involve great beauty, but also most are likely to put you in touch with nature

and maybe offer up a piece of history that you might not have known about. All in all…worthy pursuits. Here’s our list of eight leading picks, in alphabetical order:

Calico Ghost Town Ten miles from Barstow and Historic Route 66, this old West mining town has been around since California’s largest silver strike in 1881. With its 500 mines, Calico produced over $20 million in silver ore during a 12-year span. When silver lost its value in the late 1890s, Calico lost its population. The miners

loaded their mules, packed up and moved on, relegating Calico to a “ghost town.” In the 1950s Walter Knott purchased the property and restored it to look as it did in the 1880s.

Calico was named a state historical landmark, and in 2005 it was proclaimed to be California’s Silver Rush Ghost Town.

Today, Calico is part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system, featuring Lane House and Museum in one of the original adobe buildings as well as shopping, restaurants, gold panning, campaign and special events with music, shows and games. Brave souls can take a peek into the original Maggie Mine and take tours of the Mystery Shack, Ghost Town and the Calico Odessa Railroad.

This is the site where General George S. Patton, Jr. trained men and machines for desert combat action at Camp Young in preparation for Operation Torch, the North American campaign to invade Casablanca, Morocco and which proved decisive in the Allied victory.

Founders have preserved the legacy of General Patton’s influence on the area, with family members living on site and continuing to galvanize support for the non-profit Museum and the General Patton Memorial established by the Bureau of Land Management after the war. The Museum hosts numerous special events, such as Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day gatherings, as well as daily individual and group tours, remembrance walls, natural science exhibits and fascinating historical memorabilia. is a quaint little town nestled in the Manzanita and ponderosa pines of the San Jacinto Mountains. The unincorporated area overflows with art, music, theater, dining, shopping and recreation, all while immersed in fresh mountain air and easy-going traffic patterns. Favorite restaurants include Café Aroma (live music and local artists’ works on display), Restaurant Gastronome (dining room ambiance and a cozy fireplace) and Ferro (delicious pizza, lasagna and steak). These, along with numerous coffee stores and art galleries are primarily situated in the village along the main streets of North Circle Drive and Village Center Drive.

Joshua Tree National Park Another spectacle of nature, this rarified recreational area is located one hour north of the Coachella Valley in Twentynine Palms and covers 794,000 acres where the desert ecosystems of the Colorado and Mojave Deserts come together. Hiking is a favorite activity here, with short walks, moderate hikes and full-on exploration of nature trails (no pets and lots of water!) If you’re lucky, you may see some of the dozens of species of animals, such as the Desert Tortoise, Southern Mule Deer, Western Yellow Bat, Desert Chipmunk, Mojave Pocket Gopher, Mearns Coyote, Desert Kit Fox, Bobcat and birds like the Barn Owl, Costa’s Hummingbird, Turkey Vulture and over 200 others. You’ll also find yourself in direct view of over 750 species of plants, shrubs, trees and cacti, like the Paloverde and Brittlebush.

Lake Arrowhead Half of the fun of visiting this modern mountain retreat is the drive up the twisting and turning roads with panoramic vistas of the San Bernardino National Forest overlooking the expansive valley below. At 5,100 feet elevation, the central hub is Lake Arrowhead Village which is a revamped, contemporary version of the original Village built in the 1920s. There is plenty of dining and shopping throughout the village, designed like a collection of Swiss chalets, which overlooks the 782-acre Lake and 14 miles of shoreline, with destinations like The Calico Cat Antiques and El Papagayos Mexican Cantina.

The Lake Arrowhead Queen Tour Boat is a narrated one hour boat ride around the Lake, with several departures each day. The area also is home to numerous hiking and backpacking trails. Fishing is also popular at nearby Lake Gregory as Lake Arrowhead fishing is reserved for residents. When the snow starts falling, Snow Valley and Rim Nordic host skiers, but chains may be needed to get up the mountain.

Riley’s Farm Acres of fresh fruit for picking, dinner theater shows, pastries, pies and fresh baked goods, dancing in the barn, 18th-century comfort food with wine and ale and getting up close and personal with farm animals…this is the Riley’s Farm experience. Located only 30 minutes away in Yucaipa, a visit here takes you back to what life was like two centuries ago (but with plumbing and modern-day standards!) Fall events cover role-playing in a Revolutionary War reenactment or Civil War battle. For those not quite so adventurous, there are frequent historical and educational workshops on topics like The Stamp Act, The Blacksmith, A Well-Regulated Militia, The Quartering Act and others. Enjoy lunch or dinner at the Hawk’s Head Restaurant, built to look like a colonial tavern surrounded by the thickets of Oak Glen, with a roaring fire and live acoustic music on weekends. You should plan to take home a 5-pound apple pie or a salted caramel pie – or both. This is an easy way to feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine and is perfect for adults and kids alike. Whitewater Preserve

The Salton Sea came into being in 1905 when flooding on the Colorado River destroyed part of a canal system, forcing millions of gallons of water into the lowland basin, about an hour east of the Coachella Valley. In the 1950s, developers figured they’d create a Riviera-style playground, but rising salinity and agricultural runoff over the decades rendered the area unappealing. Today, there is a renewed interest in the area as a geological anomaly with reinvigorated efforts to save this ecological gem and preserve air quality in the broader region.

As you proceed south on Highway 86, your itinerary may want to stop first at the Visitor Center in Mecca where you’ll get an overview of the history. The Salton Sea is a major draw for hundreds of species of migratory birds, and The Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge as a significant rest-stop on their path, just past Salton City. As you continue around the north shore towards Niland and Highway 111, you’ll see volcanic mud pots bubble and gurgle, springing up from the massive Salton Buttes magma chamber. Keep going and you’ll see “The Slabs”, named from the concrete slabs that remained from abandoned World War II Marine Corps barracks, where around 150 people call home each winter to live “off the grid.” (parks.ca.gov/saltonsea)

The beauty here will take your breath away.

Panoramic crests, large craggy boulders and cream-colored sandstone join together to form a hiking area that takes you up part of the Pacific Crest Trail or lets you just relax next to the crystal clear Whitewater River, part of the Sand to Snow National Monument.

The 2,851-acre Preserve hosts critters like the endangered Southwest willow flycatcher and Bell’s vireo. You may also spot the migrating summer tanagers and vermilion flycatchers as well as bighorn sheep, deer and bear, as this area is an important wildlife corridor between surrounding mountains. The Wildland’s Conservancy purchased and donated an additional 3,200 acres that include sand dunes that are home to the endangered fringe-toed lizard at Windy Point, which lies at the confluence of the Whitewater and San Gorgonio Rivers.

Whitewater Preserve lies at the end of Whitewater Canyon Road, north of Palm Springs off I-10. After leaving the freeway, the preserve is a five-mile drive up Whitewater Canyon. Start at the Whitewater Visitor’s Center. Once a historic lodge, it now serves as the ranger station and visitor’s facility, where you can find trail maps and buy food to feed the trout in one of the sparkling ponds. Paved areas make it easily accessible for handicap and elderly visitors. (wildlandsconservancy.org)

A glorious way to explore Canada’s rugged wilderness, historical attractions, vibrant cities and charming small towns

O

ne certainly doesn’t have to be a hiker or even an outdoors enthusiast to know about the magnificence that is The Great Trail. If you enjoy beautiful scenery and quaint cafés, you’ll gravitate towards what was formerly known as Trans Canada Trail (TCT), a wondrous cross-Canada system of greenways, waterways and roadways that spans from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic oceans.

The Trail extends over 24,000 kilometers (close to 15,000 miles for the Yanks) and is now the longest recreational, multi-use trail network in the world. The idea for the Trail began in 1992, shortly after the Canada 125 celebrations. As of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, the Trail has been fully connected. It is been supported by donations from individu-

als, corporations, foundations and all levels of government. This collaboration may truly be one of Canada’s largest volunteer project.

This Canadian marvel is a fine example of Canada’s connection to the natural environment, made up of more than 400 community trails. People of all ages, fitness levels and nationalities use the Trail for hiking, biking, horse-back riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing, bird watching and many other activities.

Trailheads can be found at St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador; Victoria, British Columbia; and Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories. Each trail section is developed, owned and managed locally by trail groups, conservation authorities and municipal, provincial and federal governments, such as Gatineau Park or along existing trails such as the Cataraqui Trail and Voyageur Hiking Trail.

Considerable parts of the Trail are repurposed defunct rail lines donated to provincial governments by Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railway railbeds rebuilt as walking trails. Much of the Great Trail development emulated the successful Rails-to-Trails initiative in the United States.

Thousands of Canadians, community partner organizations, corporations, local businesses and all levels of government are involved in developing and maintaining these trails. As an example of public-private partnership, The Great Trail may be one of the largest volunteer projects ever undertaken in Canada.

True to its name, The Great Trail embodies the vastness of our terrain and the diversity of our people. Whether exploring for a day or a week or longer, here are some suggestions for your own Trail adventure.

One Day Walk in Vancouver Plan a stroll along Vancouver Island’s stunning coastline, and feel free to bring your dog. For this one-day journey in B.C.’s capital, you should take along snacks, water and a portable bowl for you and your pet.

Begin the walk at Clover Point Dog Park, an off-leash green space along the Trail in Victoria. This popular park was named for the acres of red clover that were found growing nearby when the Hudson’s Bay Company landed here in 1842, on the traditional land of the Lekwungen and Songhees First Nation territory.

Here you will see birds surfing the wind off the bluffs and sea, parasailers dancing above the cliffs and windsurfers coasting near the shore. As you approach Beacon Hill Park, turn left to check out Spiral Beach, or turn right to find the Story Pole, one of the tallest totem poles in the world. You’ll also come across the Mile Zero Monument, which marks the westernmost point of The Great Trail.

Holland Point Park affords spectacular views of the sand dunes and sea views, and you can also explore the Harrison Yacht Pond, designed for free-sailing model sailboats.

When returning to the Trail at Ogden Point, there’s a colorful mural on the nearby breakwater called Na ‘Tsa Maht, or the Unity Wall Mural, and uses cultural motifs of the Coast Salish Nations. Continue along the Dallas Road to Fisherman’s Wharf Park and stop for a quick snack and refreshments for you and your pooch at dog-friendly and delicious Barb’s Fish and Chips.

Keep walking to Laurel Point where you will reach David Foster Way. Named after the music producer who helped fund it, this Trail section offers wonderful views of Victoria’s historic marina. Finish up at the facade of the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

Holland Point Park

Weekend Getaway in Quebec Just north of Montréal, Le P’tit Train du Nord (Little Train of the North) linear park features a 232-km path built over a former railway line.

Running from Saint-Jérôme to Mont-Laurier, this gentle gravel trail takes outdoor enthusiasts along an old settler’s route through picturesque countryside, charming villages and restored train stations.

The trail is mechanically groomed between kilometer 1.3 and kilometer 44 for both classic cross-country skiing and skate skiing.

Other sections along the trail can be used by snowmobilers, and the entire length of the trail is open for snowshoeing.

On Day One, consider heading to Val-David, which is at kilometer 42 on Le P’tit Train du Nord. Many renowned artists and writers have lived in Val-David, notably Québécois poet Gaston Miron, jazz bassist Charlie Biddle and singer-songwriter Alan Gerber.

and an ambiance that reflects local style as in warm woods and gentle lighting.

On Day Two, you may want to hit the trail.

If you need skis (or other outdoor equipment), rentals can be found at Roc & Ride. Head north, following the groomed trail for an hour or two.

Completed in 1909, the P’tit Train du Nord played a key part in the economic development of the Laurentian region. The popularity of the rail line reached a peak between 1920 and 1940, making its final journey in late 1981, after which the route fell into disrepair.

The old rail line was transformed into a leisure trail and opened in 1996.

Located in the center of the village, the Maison du Village houses the Centre d’exposition de Val-David, hosting numerous visual arts exhibitions. For a taste of France, La Table des Gourmets pairs a three-course meal with fine wines.

On Day Three, a great way to spend the morning is by going south along the trail to try snowshoeing if the snow is fresh and deep enough. Grab a hot cocoa at the Magasin Général Val-David, a charming general store. Sit outside on the porch to watch village life roll by or browse the shop for original gifts such as gourmet condiments and home décor.

he McCallum Theatre has a surefire way to get us in the mood for the Christmas season: a performance by Canadian Brass, the group recognized by their black suits and ties, white shirts and white athletic shoes. The prolific quintet, a formidable force in the world of chamber music, will share festive classics with their show, “Christmas Time is Here.”

Originally formed in 1970 in Toronto, Ontario, the performance ensemble has won Juno, Grammy and Echo awards. As a matter

of fact, “Ensemble” was originally part of the group’s name. One listen and it’s clear how they have earned the distinction of being considered “the world’s most famous brass group.”

Today, they tour the globe and have recorded more than 130 CDs and DVDs. Masters of concert presentations, Canadian Brass has developed a uniquely engaging stage presence and rapport with audiences. The varied Canadian Brass repertoire features the works of Renaissance and Baroque masters, march-

have transformed a previously neglected group of instruments with a limited reach into a versatile and vital ensemble that can play everything from Gabrieli to Gershwin.

Education plays a key role in the story of Canadian Brass, and each member is uniquely attuned to training the next generation of players. On their travels around the world, they often pause to teach masterclasses and gladly work with students and young audiences.

Touring legends with an enthusiastic fan base, the Canadian Brass play to packed houses everywhere throughout the USA, Canada, Japan and Europe. They have also toured Australia, the Middle East, the Soviet Union and South America. They were the first brass ensemble from the West to perform in the People’s Republic of China in 1977 as part of a cultural exchange, sent by then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. They are now remembered in China as the first Western musicians allowed into China after the Cultural Revolution. They returned to China for a five-city tour to great acclaim in the spring of 2010 including an appearance on Hunan TV for Chinese New Year and several follow-up visits. They are also the first brass group to take the main stage at the venerable Carnegie Hall.

On numerous occasions, Canadian Brass has been invited by the Canadian Government to play for visiting heads of states, becoming one of Canada’s greatest resources and musical ambassadors.

Canadian Brass currently consists of founding member Chuck Daellenbach (tuba), Christopher Coletti and Caleb Hudson (trumpets), Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone) and Jeff Nelsen (horn). With four decades under their belts, Canadian Brass continues to thrill audiences around the world.

Landmarks in Architecture

O

ne of the more spectacular, man-made landmarks in Canada lies in the heart of Banff National Park, Canada’s oldest national park, established in 1885. The world-famous Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, in the picturesque alpine town of Banff, Alberta, Canada, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The year-round luxury mountain resort offers a championship golf course during the summer, unparalleled skiing in the winter, a European-style Willow Stream Spa and authentically local dining experiences. A couple of miles away, the charming town of Banff features local galleries and museums, upscale shopping and restaurants, yearround Banff Lake Louise events and popular attractions including the Banff Gondola and the mineral-rich Banff Upper Hot Springs.

William Cornelius Van Horne, the appointed general manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has been credited with recognizing the tourism potential of the Canadian west, figuring it would be one way to get people to ride his railway. To enhance traffic on the CPR, Van Horne envisioned a succession of lavish resort hotels along the railway line through the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains.

The Beginning, 1888

William Cornelius Van Horne commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada’s first National Park. Construction began in 1887, and the hotel publicly opened on June 1, 1888.

The structure was a four-story frame building, resembling in shape the letter “H,” the two

wings forming the vertical members of the letter. Van Horne’s pavilion jutted out toward the river from the front wing. The exterior was veneered to suggest cream-colored Winnipeg brick and trimmed with oil-finished cedar shingles from British Columbia. The romantic medieval air of the building was accentuated by steep-hipped roofs with pointed dormers, corner turrets, and large bay windows.

The interior was finished in native pine and fir and was dominated by a huge glasscovered octagonal rotunda that served as the main lobby. The upper floors opened onto the central hall in balconies in successive galleries, making it possible for the guests to leave their bedrooms and peer over. A large reading room, various parlors, dining rooms, smoking rooms, offices and a few guest rooms occupied the rest of the ground floor and most of the upper two stories were devoted to guest rooms.

Those who ventured into the basement would find machinery for the electric lights as well as a bar and billiard room for the gentlemen. A separate building housed boilers for

steam heat and a large bathhouse, supplied with the mineral waters of the sulphur hot springs which were piped down the mountainside.

The Start of the Twentieth Century

By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. To help adapt to the rise of international guests, the hotel underwent two upgrade periods. 1900 to 1910, saw all adjustments to the hotel pertaining to the original structure. From 1910 to 1928 where all changes were aimed at the completion of a ‘new’ hotel.

The Fire of 1926

Banff’s winter tourism began in February of 1917 with the inaugural Banff Winter Carnival. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928. Within the 28- year period, the hotel rarely saw a year without some form of addition or improvement.

Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression

Throughout the 1920s and ’30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of a luxurious hotel living against the backdrop of the Great Depression. The 1930s saw a growth in members of high society, including heads of states and actors visiting the hotel for photo opportunities organized to promote the persona or place needing exposure. The likes of Helen Keller, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited the hotel and Benny Goodman was influential in Banff obtaining a landing strip, as he wanted to stay at the hotel but could only do so if there was an area to land his plane. Stanley Thompson, a world-recognized golf course designer was selected to construct the world’s greatest mountain golf course.

1940’s

By the 1940’s the effect of World War II had reached the hotel. War meant travel restrictions of North American vacationers and Euro-

pean investment was completely lost. By 1942 the hotel had closed its doors and with it the greatest era in the hotel’s rich history. It wasn’t until 1945 that the hotel reopened.

Adapting to a New Way of Life

Through the 1950s and ’60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.

A Year-Round Destination

By the 1970’s the hotel had reached a pivotal point; for the first time the Banff Springs Hotel would remain open for the winter season and the hotel would move away from its seasonal past to becoming a resort destination open all year. Targeted marketing campaigns were thrust into foreign markets, especially Japan. The hotel changed itself in order to increase its volume market, focusing more on tours as opposed to independent guests.

The 1990’s welcomed Ted Kissane, who arrived with a new vision of luxury for the “Castle in the Rockies.” It was in 1991 that saw another expansion to the hotel with the addition of the Banff Springs Conference Centre. It was also in this decade that the Banff Springs Hotel was declared a national historic site by the government of Canada.

Present Day

Today, the hotel continues to deliver the service and excellence originally envisioned while still exhibiting the growth and adaptability that has been so common in its history.

LOOKING GOOD IN LULULEMON The Canadian athletic wear company that embraces sensations and elevates communities

he encouraging thing about flattering athleisure attire is that you don’t actually have to work out to wear it. But it’s probably safe to say that most people who do wear Lululemon clothing lead a lifestyle that incorporates physical activity, yoga and/or spiritual awareness.

Lululemon Athletica Inc. (small case intentional) established itself right out of the gate two decades ago as a wholly unique brand, selling stylish performance shirts, shorts and pants, as well as lifestyle apparel and yoga accessories like water bottles and yoga mats for men, women and girls. Their store clerks are referred to as ambassadors, and many of them double or triple as yoga instructors, personal trainers and/or motivational coaches. Yoga

classes and special fitness sessions are offered at many of the stores. According to the company, 70 percent of managers are hired internally, and they are responsible for their store’s layout, color coordination and community involvement. As they say on one of their dozens of catchy sayings and motivational quotes on their website and promotional materials, “Practice inaction leads to a purposeful life.”

Oh, and did we mention Lululemon was born in Canada, and that’s where its headquarters remain to this day? As a corporate entity, they’ve done an impressive job of expanding by selling its products internationally in both storefronts and online at lululemon.com. They currently have a presence in North America, Asia, Europe and Australia/ New Zealand, boasting $2.6 million in sales with a goal to reach $4 million by 2020. As of

December 2017, there were 397 stores worldwide, with 269 of those in the United States and 57 of those in Canada (statista.com.)

The Canadian influence remains strong on Lululemon’s leadership and ethos, keeping the brand aligned with nature and the outdoors as well as the quest for health and wellness. Founded in 1998 by Chip Wilson in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Lululemon was initially a design studio by day and a yoga studio by night. Eventually, it turned into a standalone store in November 2000. In 2001, the company began selling yoga wear. Since that time, the company has undergone several leadership changes, and Wilson resigned from the Board of Directors in 2015.

It is interesting to note that none of Lululemon’s sizing exceeds size 12. As a matter of fact, statements related to certain women’s bodies being more appropriate for the clothing line than others led to founder Wilson’s distancing and finally resignation from the company.

Nevertheless, Lululemon’s styles, fabrics and caché continue to resonate with millions of shoppers and may indeed encourage fitness. Truth is, if you don’t work out now, you probably will once you start wearing your Lululemon gear. It’s just that inspiring.

In 2017, the rules for Canadians selling U.S. real estate changed critically in how difficult it became for a Canadian seller of U.S. real estate to obtain an ITIN, and not in a good way. In 2018, the rules changed back

n January 2017, the IRS temporarily suspended the right of privately licensed companies (such as my firm-DIRECTS) to certify non-U.S. passports, which slowed down significantly the time it took for a Canadian to receive a refund of the mandatory (up-front at the time of sale of U.S. real estate) IRS withholding tax. By the end of 2017, the suspension had been lifted.

Recall when a non-U.S. person or entity sells U.S. real estate, and when the sales price is over $300,000, the IRS will require the escrow company handling the transaction to withhold 10 percent or 15 percent of the gross sales price. Recall, however, that

this withholding tax is only temporary, and the non-U.S. seller (typically a Canadian in the Coachella Valley) will almost certainly obtain a refund (of either all or most of the tax). The only question is when will the refund come. Take, for example, a Canadian who in 2015 purchases a Palm Desert home for $470,000, and in March 2018, sells it for $500,000. Under the IRS rules, the escrow company handling the transaction would be required to withhold $50,000 (10 percent times multiplied by the $500,000 sales price).

Because the Canadian is selling for a $30,000 profit (and that’s without deducting for their realtor fees), the most tax they might owe the

IRS is maybe $4,500 (15 percent (capital gains rate) x profit of $30,000), so they are entitled to a refund of $45,500. But when will they get their $45,500 back? If they don’t file an IRS 8288-B application, the answer is sometime in 2019 (and it might be late in 2019 the way things are going with the IRS these days... well over a year and a half later). On the other hand, if they file an 8288-B application (with tax professionals such as my company DIRECTS, because 8288-B’s are an impossibility to the non-practitioner), the refund will likely come around July 2018 (a lot better). And then came the big snag…

sellers) must obtain a U.S. taxpayer ID number (an “ITIN”), if they ever wish to receive a refund of their 10 percent or 15 percent withholding tax (much less a quick one via the 8288-B). A required component of the ITIN application is a “certified” copy of the Canadian passport (Canadians won’t want to send their real passport into the IRS). Before January 1, 2017, passports were permitted to be certified by private U.S. tax professional (approved by the IRS for this purpose), such as my firm DIRECTS (Domestic and International Real Estate Closing Tax Services, Inc.), with our office in Palm Desert. Canadians could just pop by our office in Palm Desert while the house they were selling was in escrow, and we could make a certified copy of their passport (easy). But on January 1, 2017, surprisingly, the IRS suspended the right of private U.S. tax professionals (officially termed a “certifying acceptance agent”) to certify non-U.S. passports. Suddenly Canadians selling U.S. houses could only obtain a certified copy of passport by (a) going to their local passport office in Canada and asking for a certified copy of their Canadian passport (which I’m told will take a week or two); (b) going to the U.S. Embassy in Canada; or (c) (and this was happening a lot in 2017) driving to the Canadian Consulate in

Los Angeles, and asking for a certified copy of their Canadian passport. This was really a drag for Canadians selling real estate in the Desertemergency trips to LA to get their passports certified (it had to be done before the closing if the Canadian were to get their tax back quickly via the 8288-B application).

The year 2017 was a mess for Canadians obtaining their ITIN’s in conjunction with selling their U.S. real estate (and it was a mess in terms of receiving refunds of the withholding tax from the IRS). Racing to LA to the Canadian Consulate to get certified copies of passports before the closing (so as to qualify for the quick refund via the 8288-B) was a huge inconvenience. But by the end of 2017, the IRS restored the right of approved private tax professionals (certifying acceptance agents) to certify non-U.S. passports (in conjunction with the Canadian (non-U.S. seller) trying to recover the 10 percent or 15 percent from the sale). The IRS probably realized without the private tax professionals able to help, because of such difficulty otherwise in obtaining the certified copy of the passport, so many foreign sellers might never receive a refund of their withholding tax, and that could lead to a large disincentive in the foreign community in buying U.S. real estate in general (not what

the U.S. real estate community wants).

Bombardier Bombardier is a company that began in 1941

by Joseph-Armand Bombardier. anadians and Americans share much more than a common border and migrating birds. The exchange of culture has had a profound influence on both countries, particularly when looking at the numerous contributions Canadians have made to the American way of life. Here are a few of the most notable:

Food and Beverages Canada Dry Ginger Ale: Created by pharmacist John J. McLaughlin in 1907, ginger ale grew in popularity in the United States during the height of the prohibition years, as the ginger helped mask the smell of liquor.

Poutine: A French-Canadian dish of French fries, cheese curds and gravy that continues to grow in popularity.

Peanut Butter: Patented by Canadian chemist Marcellus Gilmore Edson in 1884, this nutty spread was developed to serve as a dietary supplement for people with poor or no teeth.

Telephone: Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, was a Scottish/Canadian living in the United States when he registered his patent. He later became an American citizen after immigrating.

M1 Garand Rifle: Quebec born John C. Garand invented this semi-automatic rifle when he worked at the Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Called “the greatest battle implement ever devised” by General Patton, the M1 was a revolutionary new weapon for its time and became the standard weapon of the U.S. Army from 1936-1957, serving as the principle weapon for soldiers in World War II as well as the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Insulin: In 1923, the practical extraction of insulin was credited to a Canadian team at the University of Toronto, and the Nobel Prize was awarded to Frederick Banting and J.J.R. Macleod who shared their prize with James Collip. The patent for insulin, as a treatment for diabetes, was sold to the University of Toronto for one-half dollar.

Celine Dion and the Cirque du Soleil, both from Montreal, Quebec, are credited for reviving Las Vegas after tourism dropped following September 11, 2001. Baseball: Variations of the bat and ball games have been played since Medieval times, but the version that most closely resembles modernday baseball was played in Beachville, Ontario in 1838. Soon after, baseball caught on big time and was played throughout the United States.

Basketball: Created by Canadian-born Dr. James Naismith to keep children physically active at the local Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA, basketball was originally played using a peach basket as the net.

There are undoubtedly countless other Canadian contributions, but this is a fine start to acknowledging and appreciating the many ways that the great land of Canada has enriched American life. Thank you, Canada!
