pumpkin patch Farm has been in the family since 1863 BY GLORIA YOUNG
T
he morning air is brisk, the afternoons are golden and the leaves are turning yellow and red. It’s a time when thoughts turn to pumpkins and Halloween. And Rickey Ranch in Granite Bay celebrates it all. The 90-acre working farm has been in the family since 1863. Current owner Aaron Rickey is the sixth generation. “The family came out here during the Gold Rush,” he said. “Hiram Allen came out here and got the ranch and then sent for his wife, Elizabeth. She came out by herself. If he had gone back, he would have been caught up in the Civil War. He moved out here as a gold miner and ended up being a rancher and farmer.” Allen purchased 420 acres fronting what is now Cavitt Stallman Road at 50 cents an acre. In eons past, the land had a large river flowing through it. Evidence of that remains in a formation of huge boulders on the west side of the property. The early generations of the family planted fruit orchards — peaches and plums. When Aaron’s dad, Allen Rickey, took the helm, his focus became wine grapes. These days, the orchards are long gone but grape vineyard is thriving. “We have about 15 acres of grapes,” Aaron Rickey said. “We grow Zinfandel, Cabernet and Barbera. He also raises cattle, sheep and goats. He planted the first pumpkins nine years ago.

“My kids wanted to do it and it was an experiment that has gone well,” he said. “At first it was just a small pumpkin patch. Then it just grew.” The pumpkin patch opens on Oct. 1 and runs until the end of the month. “There are days when we have more than 100 cars in the parking lot,” Rickey said. “We get hundreds of people and lots of visiting schools.” The centerpiece is an acre of pumpkins and a large hay bale platform. Rickey grows some of the pumpkins and buys more from other growers. “We get new pumpkins all the time so there are always fresh ones,” he said. A hay ride takes visitors on a 10-minute ride to view the farm animals in the pasture. Along the route, there are old farm vehicles and even a “pirate ship” that Rickey decks out with skeletons in the spirit of Halloween. house, which is run by Rickey’s son and daughter, Savannah and Hayden, and is in operation on weekends and at times after school. “It’s all animated stuff,” Rickey said. “It’s not teenager scary but little kid scary. We get mostly smaller children. It’s fun but it doesn’t traumatize them. We try to do it a little different every year. There are black lights, a smoke machine and characters that move around.” There’s also a pony ride and children can feed the animals. They’re also likely to see Pumpkin, a pet pig, who is quite a socializer. When she is out of her pen, she often walks about a quarter of a mile to visit a neighboring group of pigs and then returns home, Rickey said. Entrance and parking are free. There’s a fee for the hay ride. Entry to the haunted house is $3 per person. The pony ride is $5. Pumpkins are sold by the size. There’s also a snack bar with snack food and beverages for sale. There’s a small charge for the grain to feed the animals.

Daughters of the American Revolution

he National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. Members are all lineal descendants of those who supported the cause of independence in the Revolutionary War. The DAR was founded in 1890 has 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters worldwide. DAR is one of the largest and most active service organizations. The Gold Trail Chapter, based in Roseville has 177 members from all over the region including Granite Bay and is still growing. “The Sacramento Chapter founded in 1921 is one of the oldest chapters in the area,” current Regent Laurie Smotherman said. “Gold Trail Chapter was founded in 1977 and celebrated its 40th anniversary last year to honor Honorary President General and Organizing Chapter Regent Dorla Dean Eaton Kemper.” Kemper of Granite Bay didn’t join the organization until her mother-in-law put her paperwork and genealogy content together and gave it to her as a Christmas gift. Her mother-in-law was a national executive officer in the organization and had wanted Kemper to go to join the organization. Once she joined the organization, she had filled many roles, including president general. Kemper served as the president general for the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C. from 1995 to 1998. “When I was president general, we started the digitizing of records and since then we have opened up the entire excitement of genealogy and it is so much easier now to find your ancestors.” Kemper said. Kemper explained that the DAR Headquarters complex occupies an entire city block near the White House that includes three adjoining buildings including Memorial Continental Hall, Constitution Hall and the Administration Building.

“We have always focused on volunteerism, education, historic preservation and patriotism,” Kemper said. During her time as president general, the organization completed major restoration and renovation of Constitution Hall, established the Heritage Fund to strengthen the financial future of NSDAR and much more. Kemper added that the organization contributed over $460,000 for the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Locally, when it comes to focusing on the mission of the organization, the women volunteer throughout the community to help and support all ages. In addition to the activities and projects listed on their website, DAR members volunteer as reading tutors at Crestmont elementary school for grades third and fourth and assist at book fairs and in the school library. “We provide essential supplies and books for disadvantaged children in all grades through our Community Classroom Committee,” Smotherman said. “We actively work with many local schools and classrooms to provide education during Constitution Week (Sept 17-23).” Smotherman explained that in patriotism, they have adopted

“J House” at the Veteran’s Administration complex in Yountville and the 50 men who occupy the house. The DAR members visit these veterans regularly throughout the year providing them a home cooked meal and companionship. They also provide them needed supplies and furnishings. It’s a typical summer Sunday at the Foothill Farmers Market in Granite Bay as a steady stream of customers browses the produce-filled booths. In late August, the market was a blaze of color with tomatoes in shades of red, orange, yellow and purple; bright red strawberries, sunny yellow peaches, deep purple plums and a palate of leafy greens. With fall on the horizon, the first apples and pears of the season were on view, with persimmons and cool season squash parities not far behind. In the past six years, market manager Mary Pierce has seen the Quarry Ponds Town Center site grow from only three vendors to the current 20. And she is hoping to add more.

Her own booth is filled with tomatoes of all sizes and colors grown on the Pierce Family Farm in Loomis. “Tomatoes are my big crop,” she said. “We grow 30 types and 14 colors.” Pierce planted a late season summer squash in early August. “Mainly black beauties (zucchini) and crookneck varieties,” she said. “They will be ready by October.” She also put in a “ton” of green beans, which she estimated would arrive in the market about the same time. Pierce has been selling at the Foothill Farmers Market for more than two decades and at Granite Bay since it opened 12 years ago. “Part of it was so I could be a stay-at-home mom,” she said. “I love people and everyone should be able to afford good food that’s healthy.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

Officially, the market is scheduled to close at the end of October. But Pierce hopes to keep it open until at least Thanksgiving. Her goal is that it eventually will be open year-round. “Every year we try to push it out a little further,” she said. Across the way, Pierce’s son, Russ Pierce, is in charge of the Calolea booth, with three kinds of extra virgin olive oil and four balsamic vinegars on display. Producers Michael and Monica Keller grow and press the olives on their Loma Rica acreage. “The garlic and Meyer lemon varieties are the most popular,” Pierce said. At the nearby Rice River Ranch booth, stone fruits are the stars. “Anything with a pit — we grow it,” Jeanette Rice said. As peach and nectarine season wanes, the persimmons from the Olivehurst farm will replace them in the market booth. Customer Colleen Buck has been a regular at the market for 11 years, since her family moved to the area. “I come to the (Rice River) booth for the peaches,” she said. It is the selection of fruits and vegetables that keeps her coming back. “There’s no comparison to the grocery store produce,” she said. “Everything (here) is so fresh.” Resident Bobbie Christensen is another Granite Bay farmers’ market weekly customer. “Obviously it’s for the food and it is interesting learning what’s in season,” she said. At Tong’s Sunshine Flower Farms’ booth, customer Saori Choulos was picking out a colorful bouquet. “I was just having breakfast and saw (the market) and saw the flowers,” she said. “I said I had to have them.” Pa Yang creates the bouquets from the bloom-filled containers that fill one whole side of the booth. “Dahlias and sunflowers are the most popular,” she said. “I learned (the business) from my parents. My mom taught us how

to do floral arrangements and she learned from her cousin.” Manuel Rodriguez from Rodriguez Brothers Ranch in Watsonville sells leafy greens, onions, beets, leeks and carrots. There’s also a table filled with strawberries and raspberries. “Strawberries are the most popular,” he said. “They grow almost year round (in the Watsonville climate) — from late February to November and December.” Among the other booths are a cheese vendor from Placerville, locally prepared bread and baked goods and pasture-raised beef. As shoppers surveyed the market selection and made their choices, musician Hans Anderson provided the music, strumming his guitar and keeping time with the half a dozen or so pedals at his feet. “I’m a singer and guitar player,” he said. “All the effects pedals allow me to sound like I’m being accompanied by other people.” Anderson, whose business is called Organic Vibez Entertainment, got his start as a street musician and performer at the farmers’ market. “I actually showed up riding my bike with my acoustic guitar,” he said. “I asked if they minded if I played music.” He’s been a regular ever since, with his guitar case open for tips. ine months after delivering her second daughter, Katrina Wheeler of Granite Bay, discovered running as a way to work things out in her head. Running would eventually connect her to her daughters in a way that would ultimately benefit her community. “As a mother, running was a way for me to spend quality time recharging and resetting,” she said. “I soon found a mom’s running group and the friends I’ve made through that group changed my life completely.” Now a marathon runner, Wheeler aggressively trains while her two young daughters (ages 5 and 7) are inspired by her competitive drive and determination. “I’d like to believe that because running and being active in general (my husband is a cyclist) is a normal part of our lives, our kids have acquired a love for being just as active,” she said. To combine her love for her daughters and for running, she wanted to find a program where she could enjoy running with her daughters. “I was looking for a kids’ run for my girls,” she said. “I am an avid runner and my kids always want to run races, but I was not a fan of how the kids’ races are incorporated into the adult races. It is logistically difficult to plan. Then I discovered the Healthy Kids Running Series.” Healthy Kids Running Series is a community-based nonprofit organization that helps boys and girls pre-k through middle school get active, feel accomplished and lay the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. Each Healthy Kids Running Series offers age-appropriate race distances. Kids competed weekly for a chance to earn points, and the top boy and girl with the most points in their respective age division will earn a trophy. All participants receive a finishers medal for their achievements. The series teaches its participants to live an active lifestyle through goal setting and dedication. Over 44,000-plus kids participate in more than 200 nationwide. As a first-time coordinator for the Roseville/Rocklin series this past spring, Wheeler knows firsthand what the benefits of running can do for her health and mental stability, and she hopes her daughters will be able to experience it with her.

“The participants build confidence each week and learn lessons that drive them to live a healthier lifestyle beyond their childhood years,” she said. As a project manager at the University of California Davis School of Medicine in the Clinical Trials Office, Wheeler sees the impact exercising at a young age can have on a child and what it can lead to in the future. A native of the Philippines, Wheeler finds giving back to her community as a Healthy Kids coordinator inspiring and rewarding. “I usually feel like a consumer in my town, but bringing the series to my town has allowed me to give back,” she said. “I love all the happy kids I see at every race. The smiles on their faces are the most rewarding experience.” “By participating in Healthy Kids Running Series we teach our boys and girls that you can do anything you want,” she said. “I really wanted to do this for my own kids and we all enjoy it so much as a family.” Wheeler noted that her participants’ confidence levels grew tremendously through the series. “I heard from parents about how the confidence their child gained from the race affected other areas in their lives,” she said. I also loved hearing from parents about how much the races meant to their kids — how they would look forward to them each
week and how bummed they were if they had to miss it.” Wheeler says her time as a coordinator is very rewarding. “The smiles on the kids’ faces weekly make all of the work I put in worthwhile,” she said. The Healthy Kids Running Series was founded in 2009 to combat increasing rates of childhood obesity through the introduction of running. Children, a swimming pool and pumpkins. Seemingly, one of these does not fit except in Roseville near Halloween. That’s when the city of Roseville hosts the sixth annual Floating Pumpkin Patch. Started in 2013 as an alternative to traditional Halloween events, the Floating Pumpkin Patch is an opportunity for children to swim around and pick their pumpkin from the pool. “The original idea came from other Parks and Recreation agencies holding similar events,” said Will Neville, pool manager for the city of Roseville Parks, Recreation and Library Department. “The two main sources of inspiration were from an agency in the Bay Area and one on the East Coast. They had events where you could pick a pumpkin from the pool but the difference was that you couldn’t get in the water with the pumpkins and had to fish them out with a ring or a rope.” Neville, who oversaw the event last year and has lifeguarded the Floating Pumpkin Patch, said children should bring a swimsuit and expect to get in the pool to pick out their pumpkin. Parents might want to have a swimsuit ready as well. “If the parents are there and the child is not a good swimmer, they should expect to get in the pool when picking out the pumpkin,” Neville said. “The smaller
pool will be filled with pumpkins and the kids can swim around and pick out the pumpkin they want.” “It’s a lot of fun for a few hours,” Neville added. “People are really excited to swim with the pumpkins. It’s not too often we do a special event in the indoor pool. It’s worth it to see the kids smiling.” Neville said it is important to register early. As of Sept. 7, 150 area residents had already registered for the Floating Pumpkin Patch event. There will also be a pumpkin decorating station, games and two bounce houses. Neville said the pumpkins come from Vierra Farms in West Sacramento.

There’s nothing like the smell of pumpkin pie to give you that “fall feeling.” Cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg all swirled into a sweet, pumpkin-filled pastry is enough to make any sensible person long for all the familiar comforts of Autumn. Although the easiest way to make this classic dessert is to open a can of pumpkin pie filling — or just purchase a pie at any grocery store — the most satisfying way to make it is straight from the pumpkin.
THE CRUST To be perfectly honest, I seriously considered buying the pie crust from a store for this recipe and just giving the ingredients for a homemade crust in case YOU wanted to make your own. Well. I made the pie crust for this recipe and while I was still not completely happy with the results, it worked better than most. I have had issues with pie crust since I began baking, and even the simplest of recipes has me pulling out my hair. One thing I like about this pastry crust recipe is that the oil and flour stick together well and pre-baked it is much less crumbly than butter recipes. In the recipe given, I decreased the amount of water and increased the sugar by two teaspoons which helped in both texture and taste. After it has been baked, the crust is flaky and smooth. It can be used with fillings other than pumpkin, too. A sweet potato or berry pie would be delicious compliments to this crisp, sweet crust.

THE MEMORIES What memories do you have that were shared over a slice of pumpkin pie? The first pumpkin pie memory I can think of is, of course, at Thanksgiving. I remember going to Nana and Papa’s home in the Bay Area — the only time during the year that I saw my cousins from my dad’s side of the family. Upon arrival, we were always shy for the first hour or so as aunts and uncles planted sloppy kisses on our cheeks. But soon and inevitably, hide-n-seek or tag would ensue and continue through the house and around the backyard until it was time for dinner. I recall popping large black olives onto my fingertips and cheerfully biting them off one by one, my feet dangling over the edge of a folding chair. My siblings, cousins and I piled our plates high with all of Nana’s scrumptious dishes: buttered mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, turkey, rolls and candied yams. But the best part of the meal came after we had cleared our plates: The pumpkin pie. Nana’s cooking is amazing, but her baking is simply miraculous. I have a vivid memory of standing beside the kitchen counter, paper plate held high, as Nana placed a thick sliver of pie in the middle. “Do you want whipped cream?” She asked, knowing the answer. I nodded ferociously and watched as a large spoon dipped into the Cool Whip container and hovered over my pie. With a satisfying splat, it swirled atop the pie and dripped down the sides onto the plate. Although the pie was, indeed, sweet and delicious, the memory is so much more than the pie.
2 cups flour Pinch of salt 3 teaspoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cup oil 3 tablespoons cold water Pumpkin pie filling: 2 small pumpkins 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 2 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 cup packed brown sugar WHIPPED CREAM:
1 cup heavy whipping cream 2 tablespoons sugar PIE CRUST DIRECTIONS:
Whisk together the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder. Add oil and water and stir with a fork (or your hands) until the dough is evenly moistened. Pat the dough across the bottom of muffin tin (or pie pan) and up the sides. PUMPKIN PIE DIRECTIONS:
Cut pumpkins into quarters and remove the seeds (save them for roasting!). Place on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350 oven for 40 minutes. Remove from oven, but keep oven on at 350 degrees. Let pumpkins cool, and then peel skin off. Place pumpkin in food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Measure two cups of pumpkin puree and place in a large bowl. Pour in sweetened condensed milk, eggs, vanilla, spices and brown sugar. Whisk until the mixture is smooth, then pour it into the prepared pie crusts. Bake mini pies for 25 minutes. WHIPPED CREAM:
While the pies are cooling, pour heavy whipping cream and sugar into a mason jar. Shake the jar until the cream becomes whipped cream - about 5 minutes. Be careful not to under-shake, or it will be runny, or over-shake, or it will turn to sweet butter. Pile whipped cream on cooled or refrigerated pie and enjoy.

We want what millions of other people do — to be lean and fit. Whether you want to trim off extra pounds so you’ll feel better, look better, or be better prepared to tackle whatever demands come your way, you probably want to find the most efficient way to do it. Well the question that I am most frequently asked is: Should I put more emphasis on diet or exercise to get the results I want? I present the contenders for your weight-loss attention:
IN THE LEFT CORNER: DIET While fad diets have tried their darndest to malign the fine name of dieting, proper diet continues to be a vital way to lose weight. In fact, research has shown that if you’re only going to do one thing in your journey to weight loss, it should be dieting. What does dieting mean exactly? It means taking very careful note of every bite you put in your mouth. But you can’t stop there. Because paying attention to what you eat isn’t going to make you lose an ounce of weight. You’ve got to take note of it and then reduce the number of calories you consume. If you want to lose even more faster, you’ll even want to make sure your calories are good calories. ... In other words you can’t just eat Twinkies and Big Macs every day. You’ll want to go with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources, and lots of water.

Like diet, there have been all sorts of fad exercise programs that have spanned from dangerous to ridiculously funny. But exercise hasn’t lost its place in the race for weight loss. Why? Because savvy people realize you’ve got to hit the gym if you’re going to maximize your weight loss. The best technique for weight loss is to burn more calories than you take in, and exercise is your golden ticket for shredding calories and building muscle. There are other reasons exercise rocks in the world of weight loss. It is the best way to ensure that the weight you drop is fat and not muscle. Also, when you exercise, your muscles tone up and grow stronger. With more muscle, your body’s ability to shave off calories increases, making it easier to burn calories even when you’re doing nothing at all. Diet can’t do that!
WHO WINS THE BATTLE? More than likely, you read this hoping that exercise alone would help you lose weight because you hate the idea of watching what you eat. Or maybe you’re just the opposite, and you prefer to watch your diet but absolutely loathe exercise. Well, there’s bad news for you either way. This battle that has been waging on for decades (OK, make that centuries) is ultimately a draw. If you’re not willing to eat right and exercise, the success you see today will be gone tomorrow. Try as you might, one of these ingredients alone is not enough to help you lose weight, keep it off, and have an overall healthy lifestyle. In fact, you will find that once you become serious about losing weight, you will be careful about what you eat because you don’t want to put all that exercise to waste. At the same time, you’ll push yourself harder in the gym because you realize you could burn even more calories and get closer to your weight goal today.
