hen beer lovers think of October, they spell it with a “K.” It’s that time of year again where Oktoberfest fanatics are frollicing for the next foamy destination. Whether it’s for great beer, great food or a great atmosphere, they’re looking for “the spot” to celebrate the fall beer festival. Two of the most prolific and reputable destinations in Placer County for beer is the Loomis Basin Brewery Co. at 3277 Swetzer Road and the Loomis Basin Gastropub at 3640 Taylor Road, Suite C, both in Loomis. Since 2010, the Loomis Basin Brewery Co. produces nearly 4,000 barrels a year. The beer mogul is now bottling and distributing its product all over Northern California and caters to dozens of local restaurants. Fan favorite Alohawk is on tap at every Beach Hut Deli in the greater Sacramento area. Loomis Councilman Tim Onderko praised the local grub spot as his hands-down favorite in the area. “The town of Loomis has been endowed with award-winning craft beers from LBB. Our steins ... runneth over during Oktoberfest,” Onderko said. This year, Oktoberfest in Placer County was heavily centered around Loomis as Loomis Basin Brewery aimed for another fall and foamy Oktoberfest full of handcrafted brews and American bistro type food. The Oktoberfest event was at the Historic Loomis Train Depot at 5775 Taylor Road from on Sept. 22 in the center of downtown. “The main thing is for this year is reducing the wait lines,” said Loomis Basin Brewing Company co-owner Kenny Gowan. “We are bringing in tow beer trailers, which includes a

continued from page 11

refrigerated eight to 10 tap beer draft trailer.” Gowan stressed that last year’s Oktoberfest event in Loomis was missing one item: shorter wait lines for good beer. “We got hammered last year on wait times. We were not spreading the pour stations out enough,” Gowan said, “in terms of getting people their beers quickly. The wait was too long.” The Gowans illustrated their dedication to Oktoberfest by improving more elements to the most highly-anticipated beer festival in Placer County. Kenny Gowan detailed the specific beer choices on tap during the Oktoberfest: “We will have four variety choices on tap this year: the bitter Nemesis Imperial IPA, the smooth malty and sweet ‘Alohawk’ ale, the juicy and citrus All Good New England Style Ale hazy IPA and the hoppy and floral Vindicator West Coast-style IPA. We will also have a nice wine and cider can station for those with a different pallet.” The event featured the band, Alpenband, who provided interactive live music. “Live music

for everyone in attendance was a priority and we had to book these bands over a year in advance,” Kenny said. The Gowans brewery and gastropub are a result of hard work and the Loomis community. “The town makes us what we are. I have always believed that,” Kenny Gowan said. “We’ve been very fortunate here, seeing the opportunity when it comes. It’s a tough experience for my wife and I to take this on ourselves. We don’t have investors and we don’t have financial partners. This is familyowned and operated.” Since taking over the Loomis Basin Brewery in 2010, they have supplied their award-winning brews for projects and events from midtown Sacramento to North Lake Tahoe. “We love to give back to our community. I’ve started and managed two restaurants before taking on the gastropub and LBB Brewery,” Kenny Gowan said. “That’s why I got into the food business. I enjoyed the creativity of it. Loomis is a special place and we thank the community for their continued support for our local business.”

FLOWER POWER

The Flower Farm in Loomis offers a variety of favorites, like a pumpkin patch, cafe, and bed-and-breakfast

S

eptember’s bright orange orbs peeking through dense green foliage have been transformed into a pumpkin patch with the arrival of fall at Flower Farm Nursery in Loomis. “We put in the pumpkins in early summer,” Flower Farm owner Ann Bowler said. “We grow the more unusual ones. Then we bring in the standard ones. The unusual pumpkins are the ones people really enjoy. They like the regular ones for carving.” The Bowlers began the pumpkin tradition when they bought the property 14 years ago. It’s a patch with personality — in the form of “pumpkin people.” The whimsical life-size creations are a group effort, spearheaded by Bowler. Her son, Jake, an art major at college, makes the bodies. A friend, Davis resident Linda Lacey, does the faces. Bowler scours local thrift shops for clothing for her gourd art pieces and over the years has amassed quite a collection. Each

year features a new theme. “… this year (they) are well loved characters that are ‘on location’ making films at the farm,” Bowler said in a press release. In the early days of the pumpkin people exhibit, there was a wagon ride. Now visitors take a walking tour to view all the characters. “There are 10 or 12 (pumpkin characters) on the tour,” she said. “It takes a half hour to 45 minutes to go through.” Bowler, an author of children’s books and former elementary school teacher, adds a writer’s touch. “I write these little riddles so kids can walk around on the tour and answer a bunch of questions,” she said. “It is educational but also fun.” Children can also play games along the riddle path. There’s spider stick — throwing things that stick to a wall; bean bag toss and a game called putting the ring on the witch’s hat. Frequently visitors come back from the tour and then turn around and do it again, Bowler said. “The families very much enjoy it. I love to get families out having fun together.” On weekends in October there’s face painting and Halloween crafts for kids. And they can meet a variety of animal guests shared by local 4H and FFA members, and see newly hatched

chicks, the release said. The Flower Farm Cafe, which highlights locally grown seasonal produce, is a popular stop for lunch or a snack during the visit. “We always have food from our garden,” Bowler said. “Right now there are grapes as our side dish. When we have oranges, we will serve those. We’ll have butternut soup and we put together things we grow here on the farm and make them into some kind of delicious meal. We do that year round.” For the adults, there’s beer from Loomis Basin Brewery on tap and other bottled varieties. The cafe also serves selections from Casque Wine, which has a tasting room on site. The nursery gift shop has unique items designed by local artists and lots of Halloween and fall decor. Flower Farm includes a bed-and-breadfast inn and it is a popular venue for weddings and special events.

hildren, a swimming pool and pumpkins. Seemingly, one of these does not fit except in Roseville near Halloween. That’s when the city of Roseville hosts the sixth annual Floating Pumpkin Patch. Started in 2013 as an alternative to traditional Halloween events, the Floating Pumpkin Patch is an opportunity for children to swim around and pick their pumpkin from the pool. “The original idea came from other Parks and Recreation agencies holding similar events,” said Will Neville, pool manager for the city of Roseville Parks, Recreation and Library Department. “The two main sources of inspiration were from an agency in the Bay Area and one on the East Coast. They had events where you could pick a pumpkin from the pool but the difference was that you couldn’t get in the water with the pumpkins and had to fish them out with a ring or a rope.” Neville, who oversaw the event last year and has lifeguarded the Floating Pumpkin Patch, said children should bring a swimsuit and expect to get in the pool

So Placer Mag Oct 2018.indd 17

to pick out their pumpkin. Parents might want to have a swimsuit ready as well. “If the parents are there and the child is not a good swimmer, they should expect to get in the pool when picking out the pumpkin,” Neville said. “The smaller pool will be filled with pumpkins and the kids can swim around and pick out the pumpkin they want.” “It’s a lot of fun for a few hours,” Neville added. “People are really excited to swim with the pumpkins. It’s not too often we do a special event in the indoor pool. It’s worth it to see the kids smiling.” Neville said it is important to register early. As of Sept. 7, 150 area residents had already registered for the Floating Pumpkin Patch event. There will also be a pumpkin decorating station, games and two bounce houses. Neville said the pumpkins come from Vierra Farms in West Sacramento.

incoln couple Angela and William Strickler are such fans of Halloween that they have a farm devoted to it. They purchased the property on Fruitvale Road three years ago and named it Strickler Monster Farms. Since then, they spend months each year preparing for their October showcase of events. “We have always had a big love for Halloween and decided this is something we’d like to do when we got older,” Angela Strickler said. “We’re trying to do our dream.” The centerpiece is their corn maze — actually two of them. There’s a childfriendly part that’s about a quarter-ofa-mile walk, with a UFO, little spiders and other not-too-scary creatures. The “extreme scare” maze for teens and adults is decked out with monsters and other props. The combined mazes are about three-quarters of a mile in walking distance, she said. “The corn we grow is not edible. It is maze corn,” Strickler said. “We cut out the maze when it gets 2 feet tall. We do a different one every year. We come up with new creations for it. It is really fun.” Nearby is the pumpkin patch. “We grow the pumpkins and bring them up to the area so people can pick out what they want,” she said. “If people want to go pick one, they can go into the field but there are a lot of weeds. It’s all organic.” For younger kids, there’s a petting zoo with sheep, an alpaca, a goat, a 140-pound tortoise and a mini-horse. New this year is a sunflower path. “It’s a big circle I made of sunflowers that you walk through in the middle of the trail,” Strickler said. “You walk around in a circle and then return on a different path.” She estimates the walk is about a quarter-of-a-mile. For those who work up an appetite going through the mazes, the Stricklers sell hamburgers, hot dogs and steak sandwiches cooked on the barbecue. There are also snacks and sodas. When evening arrives, it’s movie time

with free popcorn. “We show kid-friendly scary movies — (such as) “Nine” and “Hellboy” — all PG or PG13,” Strickler said The couple puts together theme nights throughout the month. On Oct. 13, there will be a corn hole tournament. “It’s kind of like horseshoes,” she explained. “You toss the corn bags and try to get them through a hole.” On Oct. 7 there’s dog racing, where attendees can chose to enter their dogs in the contest. “We are dog friendly people,” she said. “People bring their dogs along when they visit the farm.” Oct. 21 is paint night. Under the direction of a local artist, participants paint a copy of a painting that is on display. The $20 fee includes a canvas and paint supplies. Reservations are requested because the event is limited to 20 people, Strickler said.

Preparing the farm for the October festivities is a family affair. The Stricklers’ children, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters and Angela’s mom pitch in to get everything ready “We water all the way until the last week of September,” Angela Strickler said. “We put everything out the last week of September. All the maze is cut in at that time.” The farm has a 13-foot tower with a deck on top, where the couple can view the crowd and the goings-on during the festivities. “We get up there with a bullhorn,” she said. The Stricklers’ salute to Halloween has grown each year, from a few hundred to nearly 1,000 attendees in 2017. “It’s pretty exciting around here in October,” Angela said. “We close at 8 p.m. every night. It’s an afternoon and evening event.”

re you ready for a fun-filled evening sampling diverse cuisine and beverages from the area’s finest establishments? Look no further than the second annual Taste of Placer event hosted by Kelli’s Cookies for Goodness Bakes. “It is a collaboration of local restaurants, wineries and breweries that set up a table and sample out their favorite food, wine or cuisine,” owner and CEO Kelli Ridenour said. Kelli’s Cookies for Goodness Bakes is a nonprofit bakery in Roseville whose mission is to mentor, employ and inspire agedout foster and at-risk youth in the greater Placer and Sacramento regions. Furthermore, their mission includes empowering these individuals to achieve independence as well as financial and social prosperity. During the event enjoy all you can eat and drink from the Greater Placer area establishments like Sienna Restaurant, P.F. Chang’s, Land Ocean, Monk Cellar and much more. While sampling the items, you can talk with each place and pick up menus or coupons for future uses. “We have a great DJ that plays a

22

variety of music, so towards the end of the evening we start to get everyone out towards the dance floor,” Ridenour explained. In addition to the live entertainment enjoy a raffle, silent auction, a portable chair massager, photos, and even enjoy a special appearance by the Cookie Monster, all while contributing to a great cause. Proceeds from the event go towards Kelli’s Cookies nonprofit program that works with foster youth to receive job skills training, mentoring and employment at the bakery. “If you are a food and beverage connoisseur who wants to try a bunch of local cuisine from 40 or more establishments, this event is for you!” Ridenour enthused. Tickets can be purchased online at their website or at the bakery, located in Roseville. Your ticket purchase also includes a wine glass and a plastic, reusable event plate. This event is for ages 21 and over.

BISHOP’S PUMPKIN FARM An annual tradition SOUTH PLACER MAGAZINE STAFF

B

ishop’s Pumpkin Farm is more than a pumpkin patch: It is a fall family tradition on a wide stretch of farmstead with corn, apple trees, hay bales, a bakery, a gift shop and yes, pumpkins — of all shapes and sizes. The 40-acre farm was started by Sandy and Bill Bishop in 1973 with a simple pumpkin patch on about an acre of land. Sandy Bishop was a teacher and wanted to allow kids the chance to visit a farm. “We never thought back then that it was going to be anything like this,” said Wayne Bishop, son of Bill and Sandy. From one patch of gourds to the festive and fun spectacle that it is today, the Bishop family has remained at the center. The farm is open now through Nov.

4. Attendees can enjoy many activities including: a corn maze, hay rides, petting zoo, pony rides, zip line and carousel. “Growing up on a pumpkin farm was pretty fun,” Meghan Sanderson said. “I spent a lot of days out here just running around and playing with the animals.” There are baby goats, donkeys, sheep, cows and a horse on the farm — some of which are participating in this season’s upgraded petting zoo. “The animals have moved in and seem to really love it already,” Sanderson said. During the spring season, the farm is open for a short time, but the main attractions are only available in the fall season.

“We love getting to see all the people who come back to see us year after year,” Sanderson said. Bishop said that two years ago it was too hot during October, and last year it was too wet. This year, it seems that there may be just the right combination of plump pumpkins and little hands eager to pick them.

ith a light-hearted theme like denim and diamonds, it's hard to believe that an event could be about something so serious. But that's exactly what the annual Denim and Diamonds Fundraising Gala, which will take place on Oct. 25 at @ TheGrounds in Roseville, is. Hosted by Kidsfirst, an organization dedicated to treating and preventing child abuse, the event will feature silent and live auctions, raffle drawings, a barbeque dinner, bar,

and music. KidsFirst was founded in 1989 and provides counseling, therapy, afterschool enrichment, parenting classes and support groups. But apparently they also know how to have some fun. The gala, which is in its sixth year now, will be emceed by Placer County Sheriff Devon Bell. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on items like themed baskets, vacation getaways, spa packages, and diamond jewelry. Also up for grabs

is a “Barbara-Que”package donated by KidsFirst Executive Director Barbara Besana. The package includes a brand new barbecue along with everything needed to host an outdoor soiree. or some, it's the picture of childhood: holding the hand of a parent as we traipse through bustling crowds under red and white-striped tents, munching the cotton candy we hold in our spare hand, trying to keep up with the thundering

voice of the announcer as he broadcasts act after death-defying act. Breathlessly and giddily we watch jugglers, flying trapeze artists, and acrobats as they defy the impossible again and again. Yes, the circus is coming to town. Circus Vargas, to be specific. Only this circus is lacking one thing: the animals. “We receive many inquiries as to why Circus Vargas’ current productions do not include animal acts,” said Rolanda Kaiser, Public Relations Director. “The creative concept behind the reincarnation of Circus Vargas has simply been a

natural progression in the long and stellar careers of owners Nelson and Katya Quiroga." A veteran acrobat and aerialist, Nelson focuses his work on the acrobatics of the circus. Katya, a former ballerina, focuses on the beauty of movement. "The current productions, born of their artistic collaboration, are based on the human aspect of their combined circus experiences and expertise,” Kaiser said. Is it really the circus, with no animals? For some, it's even better, because there are no concerns of animal rights being violated—a blemish on the memory of Barnum and Bailey and other circuses. “Circus Vargas is absolutely circus at its best,” Kaiser said. "It just happens to be animal-free. The theme of this year's Circus Vargas is "Dreaming of Pirates," and it promises not to disappoint. Having just finished a stint in Roseville, the circus will be coming to Folsom's Lakeside Church on Oct. 10 through 14. Attendees are encouraged to come early for a pre-show celebration, during which children can learn cirus skills like juggling and balancing. Performers will also be available to mingle with attendees after each performance. General admission tickets start at $15 for children and $25 for adults. The memory of going to the circus holds the magic of childhood, to be sure, but are we ever too old to enjoy the circus?

pumpkin pies make many

here’s nothing like the smell of pumpkin pie to give you that “fall feeling.” Cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg all swirled into a sweet, pumpkin-filled pastry is enough to make any sensible person long for all the familiar comforts of Autumn. Although the easiest way to make this classic dessert is to open a can of pumpkin pie filling -- or just purchase a pie at any grocery store -- the most satisfying way to make it is straight from the pumpkin.

THE PIE:

If you were unaware just how much sugar is in pumpkin pie, this is your wakeup call. Maybe it’s a good thing that pumpkin pie is just a seasonal favorite! On its own, pumpkin is not a particularly sweet gourd. However, it does contain some benefits including fiber, potassium and a high vitamin C content. The potassium in pumpkins can have a positive effect on blood pressure, and the antioxidants could help prevent degenerative damage to the eyes. In addition to desserts, pumpkin can be incorporated into soups, salads, preserves and even as a substitute for butter. Pureed pumpkin (like

applesauce) is a great substitute for butter or oil in most baking recipes. Pumpkin pie has been an American tradition since the very early days of our history. Did someone say history? Here’s a bit of trivia for you to share next time you’re asked to bring the dessert: In 1654, Massachusetts Ship Captain Edward Johnson wrote that as New England prospered, people prepared “apples, pears, and quince tarts instead of their former Pumpkin Pies.” At the time, pumpkin pie existed in many forms, only a few of which would be familiar to us today. A 1653 French cookbook instructed chefs to boil the pumpkin in milk and strain it before putting it in a crust. English writer Hannah Woolley’s 1670 “Gentlewoman’s Companion” advocated a pie filled with alternating layers of pumpkin and apple, spiced rosemary, sweet marjoram and handful of thyme. Sometimes a crust was unnecessary; an early New England recipe involved filling a hollowed-out pumpkin with spiced, sweetened milk and cooking it directly in a fire. And an English version of the same preparation had the pumpkin stuffed with sliced apples. (history.comwhipped

Pie Crust INGREDIENTS 2 cups flour Pinch of salt 3 teaspoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cup oil 3 Tablespoons cold water

Pie Filling INGREDIENTS 2 small pumpkins 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk 2 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

Whipped cream INGREDIENTS 1 cup heavy whipping cream 2 tablespoons sugar PIE CRUST DIRECTIONS: Whisk together the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder. Add oil and water and stir with a fork (or your hands) until the dough is evenly moistened. Pat the dough across the bottom of muffin tin (or pie pan) and up the sides. PUMPKIN PIE DIRECTIONS: Cut pumpkins into quarters and remove the seeds (save them for roasting!). Place on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350 oven for 40 minutes. Remove from oven, but keep oven on at 350

WHIPPED CREAM DIRECTIONS:

While the pies are cooling, pour heavy whipping cream and sugar into a mason jar. Shake the jar until the cream becomes whipped cream - about 5 minutes. Be careful not to under-shake, or it will be runny, or over-shake, or it will turn to sweet butter. Pile whipped cream on cooled or refrigerated pie and enjoy. THE CRUST:

To be perfectly honest, I seriously considered buying the pie crust from a store for this recipe and just giving the ingredients for a homemade crust in case YOU wanted to make your own. Well. I made the pie crust for this recipe and while I was still not completely happy with the results, it worked better than most. One thing I like about this pastry crust recipe is that the oil and flour stick together well and pre-baked it is much less crumbly than butter recipes. After it has been baked, the crust is flaky and smooth. It can be used with fillings other than pumpkin, too. A sweet potato or berry pie would be delicious compliments to this crisp, sweet crust. THE MEMORIES: What memories have you shared over a slice of pumpkin pie? The first I can think of is, of course, at Thanksgiving. I remember going to my Nana and Papa’s home in the Bay Area -- the only time during the year that I saw my cousins from my dad’s side of the family. Upon arrival, we were always shy for the first hour or so as aunts and uncles planted sloppy kisses on our cheeks. But soon

and inevitably, hide-n-seek or tag would ensue and continue through the house and around the backyard until it was time for dinner. I recall popping large black olives onto my fingertips and cheerfully biting them off one by one, my feet dangling over the edge of a folding chair. My siblings, cousins and I piled our plates high with all of Nana’s scrumptious dishes: buttered mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, turkey, rolls and candied yams. But the best part of the meal came after we had cleared our plates: The pumpkin pie. Nana’s cooking is amazing, but her baking is simply miraculous. I have a vivid memory of standing beside the kitchen counter, paper plate held high, as Nana placed a thick sliver of pie in the middle. “Do you want whipped cream?” She asked, knowing the answer. I nodded ferociously and watched as a large spoon dipped into the Cool Whip container and hovered over my pie. With a satisfying splat, it swirled atop the pie and dripped down the sides onto the plate. Although the pie was, indeed, sweet and delicious, the memory is so much more than the pie. It is my Nana, and the sound of her voice asking me if I wanted whipped cream, and running up and down the driveway with my cousins, and sitting on Papa’s lap while “Little Rascals” played on the T.V. in the background. It’s not as if these memories wouldn’t have happened without a slice of pie, but for me, the pumpkin pie is a annual reminder of warmth, love and family. As you bake these mini pies, or any special traditional dessert this season, remember that you’re not only making a tasty dessert -- you’re making memories.

Chris Palkowski, MD

Physician-in-chief Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center

mental illness

The statistics are staggering: 1 in 5 adults in the United States has a mental health condition at any given time, yet only about half will seek treatment. Those who don’t get the care they need are at greater risk of chronic health problems, hospitalizations and suicide. But the good news is, treatment works. More than 80 percent of people treated for one of the most challenging conditions – depression – will improve, according to studies. I hope you’ve noticed lately that the health care community is raising awareness about mental health, because we need to deal with it as seriously as we do our physical health. When we break our arm, we expect X-rays, then a cast. When we are diagnosed with high blood pressure, we can benefit from a better diet, exercise and maybe even medications. Most people have no problem talking with friends and family about our physical health, yet we avoid talking about our mental health. We need to change that. Especially when it involves depression. Depression is an illness with several characteristics, including feeling sad, a loss in interest in things you used to enjoy, being withdrawn from others, and a lack of energy. Other common symptoms include sleeping too much or too little, changes in appetite and or weight, problems concentrating, feeling life isn’t worth living or having thoughts of death and suicide. We know it can be difficult and scary to share such intensely personal thoughts with someone else, but once we do, it will be easier to get professional help. If you believe someone is depressed, talk to them about it, as uncomfortable as that may be. Try nonjudgmental phrasesand open-ended questions such as, “I’ve noticed that you’ve been _____. Is there anything you want to talk about?” Although there’s a growing openness toward mental health issues and conditions, stigma and misperceptions still exist, which may prevent people from speaking up and getting help, according to a

2017 national consumer poll commissioned by Kaiser Permanente. More than half of respondents suspected that a family member or friend had a mental health condition but weren’t telling them. When asked why they believe people are reluctant to reach out for support, most cited fear of stigma (56 percent), embarrassment and shame (38 percent), and denial (11 percent). Kaiser Permanente is dedicated to making sure members have access to the behavioral health care they need, when and where they need it. The organization offers an online self-assessment tool that can be used by members and non-members to help identify early signs of depression and learn more about it. Kaiser Permanente primary care physicians also use a special patient health questionnaire — called a PHQ9 — an effective way to detect depression and other mental health issues. And in some locations, such as Lincoln Medical Offices, a behavioral health expert is working alongside primary care providers to promptly help diagnose mild to moderate depression and anxiety disorders in members who visit their doctor without the intention of being screened for mental health issues. “Our behavioral health specialists can help our members better understand and acknowledge what they are dealing with, since mental health issues are much more nebulous than physical issues such as checking one’s blood pressure, pulse or temperature,” said Brad Briercheck, MD, my colleague who oversees the Psychiatry department. To learn more about depression, and how we can reduce stigma associated with mental illness, I encourage you to view a very useful website, findyourwords.org. You’ll find valuable informationincluding tips on how to get help for yourself and support others.
