PUMPKIN PATCH

Pumpkin patch FLOWER FARM’S PUMPKINS WITH PERSONALITY STORY AND PHOTOS BY GLORIA YOUNG

S

eptember’s bright orange orbs peeking through dense green foliage have been transformed into a pumpkin patch with the arrival of fall at Flower Farm Nursery in Loomis.

“We put in the pumpkins in early summer,” Flower Farm owner Annie Bowler said. “We grow the more unusual ones. Then we bring in the standard ones. The unusual pumpkins are the ones people really enjoy. They like the regular ones for carving.”

The Bowlers began the pumpkin tradition when they bought the property 14 years ago.

It’s a patch with personality — in the form of “pumpkin people.”

The whimsical life-size creations are a group effort, spearheaded by Bowler Her son, Jake, an art major at college, makes the bodies. A friend, Davis resident Linda Lacey, does the faces.

Bowler scours local thrift shops for clothing for her gourd art pieces and over the years has amassed quite a collection. Each year she comes up with a theme. This year it is movie characters.

In the early days of the pumpkin people exhibit, there was a wagon ride.

Now visitors take a walking tour to view all the characters.

“There are 10 or 12 (pumpkin characters) on the tour,” she said. “It takes a

half hour to 45 minutes to go through.”

Bowler, an author of children’s books and former elementary school teacher, adds a writer’s touch.

“I write these little riddles so kids can walk around on the tour and answer a bunch of questions,” she said. “It is educational but also fun. It is meant to be fun.”

Frequently visitors come back from the tour and then turn around and do it again, she said.

“There are little games along the way,” Bowler said. “We set up Halloweenish silly games such as Spider Stick, where children throw things that stick it to the wall.”

There’s also a bean bag toss and a game called putting the ring on the witch’s hat.

“The whole thing takes a good while,” she said. “The families very much enjoy it. I love to get families out having fun together.”

The Flower Farm Cafe, which highlights locally grown seasonal produce, is a popular stop for lunch or a snack during the visit.

“We always have food from our garden,” Bowler said. “Right now there are grapes as our side dish. When we have oranges, we will serve those. We’ll have butternut soup and we put together things we grow here on the farm and make them into some kind of delicious meal. We do that year round.”

For the adults, there’s beer from Loomis Basin Brewery on tap and other bottled varieties. The cafe also serves selections from Casque Wine, which has a tasting room on site.

In addition to the nursery and cafe, Flower Farm includes a bed-and-breadfast inn and it is a popular venue for weddings and special events.

The Family Homemade Recipe Contest is back by popular demand at the Community Festival.

Entrants should bring enough for 10 judges to taste the dish.

Adults ages 16 and over are eligible to enter the contest, and kids from (6-15 years of age) can compete for Best Overall Dish, Best Savory Dish, Best Sweet Dish and Best Kids Dish (ages 6-15).

Entry cost is $10, includes a free Community Harvest Festival T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded for first place and runner-up will be awarded a ribbon.

The “heftiest pumpkin” will be awarded $1,000 and a $500 bonus goes to the biggest Placer-grown pumpkin.

The costume contest winner will be given $500, group/youth winner will gain $100 and people’s choice garners $500.

However, the awards don’t stop there. For the costume contest, judges will be looking for most frightening, best Disney themed, best homemade and most original. Fido is also invited to join the contest and be in the running for best pet costume.

The parade begins at 2 p.m. for spectators to see all costume contestants in procession.

The event will also have carnival games and pony rides for kids, food and vendor booths hosted by local nonprofits and Auburn’s own Sugar Plump Fairies will be out in friendly force.

This is a day of wholesome activities that cater to the entire family complete with kids are bounce houses and climbing walls.

Common Cider Before Prohibition, hard cider was the most popular alcoholic beverage in the U.S. In the UK today, the percent of the population that claims to be cider drinkers (47 percent) is greater than the percent claiming to be lager drinkers (46 percent).

Cider can be used as a cocktail mixer. Get creative!

The popular apple holds a unique place in the world of science. When Issac Newton observed one falling from a tree, he postulated that there was a universal gravitational pull that was responsible for pulling things down to the ground.

The tradition of giving apples to teachers dates back to the 16th century. Because teachers were not paid well, families shared food with them. This often included apples. * comconcider.com

BREWED IN AUBURN, BEVERAGE COMPANY BLENDS APPLES, FRUIT AND SPICES When Fran Toves’ son won a homebrew competition in 2013, she told him it wasn’t a fair win since his was the only cider entered.

“He said ‘put your money where your mouth is,’” recalled Toves.

So, she did. And with the goal of out-brewing her son, Toves created three unique, modern cider blends. She entered her ciders in a homebrew competition in Reno and all three placed in the top 10.

Toves, who previously worked in the natural and organic food business, was interested in starting a new project during the time of the competition.

“I was looking at Kombucha to start a beverage company,” Toves said. “It just so happens I decided to try my hand at cider.”

She is now the founder and owner of an innovative business with its headquarters in Auburn: Common Cider Company.

Common Cider is a modern take on more traditional, hard ciders. It is made with culinary, or “common” apples such as gala, red delicious or fuji, and is blended with fruit and spices. The result is drier and less sweet than most ciders, and has a slightly lower-than-typical alcohol level at 6.5 percent. It is also gluten-free and naturally low in sugar.

When the company began, the cider was bottled at a winery in Amador County, Drytown Cellars, and made with Apple Hill apples.

As they expanded, however, the demand grew for both space and quantities of fruit. Toves decided to create their own facility in Auburn with enough space and the proper equipment to ferment, blend and package all the flavorful beverages. The fresh apple juice — several “tankers” of 5,500 gallons each month — now come from Hood River, in Oregon.

“With any type of product, you really want to start with the best ingredients that you can,” Toves said. The company will soon be increasing production by about 10 to 15 tankers each month.

The cider story As the story goes, Johnny Appleseed planted apple trees in the 1800s, dropping seeds as he crossed the Midwest. Many of the seeds he dropped became cider trees, Toves said.

With the prevalence of apple trees, homebrewed, hard apple cider became the No. 1 alcoholic drink in the U.S. before prohibition.

During prohibition, the vast majority of these trees — which produced inedible, sour apples — were chopped down by federal agents.

After prohibition, beer or bourbon became the drink of choice for most Americans, but now it would seem that cider is making a delicious comeback.

The process of making Common Cider involves patience, precision and passion. After a period of closely monitored fermentation, the fruity beverage is then blended into a mixture of flavors like blood orange and tangerine or ginger and pear (coming soon). Toves is confident in her brews and said she has never

made a cider that tastes unpleasant. With creative flavors like Hibiscus Saison, Pineapple Guava, Blackberry Sangria and more, these ciders are bottled with mouthwatering combinations of fruit and spices. The Americana Apple is the only basic selection, and although it is comparable to the other more flamboyant flavors, it is not a best-seller.

“We are women-owned and we really like to think of ourselves at innovators,” Toves said. “Over the next year we’ll have some limited editions of some really fun barrel-age ciders.”

Toves said all of her ciders begin with a high-quality base with the best ingredients and flavors added to enhance the base.

“We’re not covering up any mistakes,” she said.

Although there is no Common Cider tasting room in Auburn yet, one may be coming in the near future — to the tremendous delight of local beer and cider fans.

Spider Alley The fall season brings Pumpkin Nights, rolling into Gold Country Fairgrounds for its second year of creating immersive Halloween experiences for the whole family.

Pumpkin Nights is brings its interactive Halloween experience back to Auburn this October. Taking place at the Gold Country Fairgrounds, visitors or “Pumpkinheads” are invited to journey into dazzling, multi-sensory Halloween displays and eight fantasy lands created with over 3,000 hand-carved and foam pumpkins.

The outdoor, family friendly Halloween experience will be open for 18 days, kicking off on Oct. 17 and ending on Nov. 4.

“We’re excited to bring the magic of Pumpkin Nights to Auburn for a second time! We are especially excited to give attendees a behind-the-scenes look on our social media accounts at how the pumpkin lands are created and introduce the talented artists behind the installations,” said Chelsea Kasen, Pumpkin Nights’ co-founder.

Ghost Tour brings light to a dark past

M —— Boo: The first Gold Country Ghost Tour in Old Town Auburn took place in 2016. This year, more than 100 volunteers will be returning to tell some of the eerie stories of Auburn’s past.

elany Hall grew up in the small town of Auburn surrounded by a wealth of history with a curious past. Her life is deeply integrated in the community, which is evidenced by her many service-oriented involvements including president of Placer Junior Hillmen, internship coordinator for Confluence High School, advisor for the Forgotten Soldier Program, and football team mom for Placer High freshman football.

In addition to these, Hall now has another title: Founder of the Old Town Auburn Ghost Tours.

In 2016, Hall unearthed a spooky idea to preserve Auburn’s history and get the community involved, too. Having attended ghost tours in various “haunted” cities throughout the country, Hall turned her attention to her hometown of Auburn.

“It just kind of evolved into this amazing event,” she said.

The second year for the ghost tour (it was not held in 2017) will take place on three nights at the end of October

and November. All three dates, with 200 tickets each night, sold out within hours of being available. When asked if more nights might be added to accommodate the undeniable interest and popularity of the event, Hall responded thoughtfully, “We want to preserve the integrity of the event; sometimes more is not always better.”

All the proceeds from these three eerie nights go directly back to the community through the museum and Placer High drama club.

“For me this is a very altruistic opportunity,” Hall said.

She added her thanks to the many businesses in Old Town Auburn that have been receptive and supportive to what the group is doing.

More than 100 volunteers and museum docents have banded together to create this spine-tingling experience for the community. Hall’s husband, Rob Hall, and their children, Jake, 17, Andy, 14 and Alexandria, 9, helped with the first tour two years ago and will be volunteering this year as well.

Tour groups will be escorted throughout Old Town Auburn by Placer High School drama students. From selling tickets, welcoming and guiding tour groups, to all the actors and docents, this is a true community effort.

“I have an incredible tribe of friends who are helping and without them this wouldn’t be possible,” Hall said.

Ralph Gibson, of the Placer County Museum, and the Placer County Archives workers including April McDonald, have also played a large role in the event.

“I think it’s great,” Gibson said. “In researching, we looked under rocks we never did before and it’s pretty interesting … Our role is enlightening people to a darker part of our past.”

Gibson added that he enjoyed the process of looking into the ghosts of Auburn’s past with Hall and the other archive researchers to add the “right flavor” to the tour.

“It is as historically accurate as possible,” Hall commented.

The lucky few who have tickets to this year’s ghost tour will spend several ghostly minutes at each location meeting historical figures like the possibly insane murderer Alma Bell, played

by Joan Maxwell, and a stagecoach robber known as “Rattlesnake Dick,” Pastor Dan Stacek. Throughout the night, groups will hear stories of true hauntings that some Auburnites have experienced at places like Crimson Tattoo and Re-Find Living. A new addition to the tour this year is a look at the Joss House on China Town Hill. Richard Yue, president of the Joss House Museum, agreed to open it for the tour.

“It’s like stepping back into time,” Hall said.

The prime purpose of the ghost tours is to preserve Auburn’s history.

“There are incredible historical facts I’ve learned from doing this that I had no idea about,” Hall said.

Additionally, the tours will increase tourism for the town aiding economic development and supporting the community now and for future generations.

There’s nothing like the smell of pumpkin pie to give you that “fall feeling.” Cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg all swirled into a sweet, pumpkin-filled pastry is enough to make any sensible person long for all the familiar comforts of Autumn.

Although the easiest way to make this classic dessert is to open a can of pumpkin pie filling — or just purchase a pie at any grocery store — the most satisfying way to make it is straight from the pumpkin.

The pie If you were unaware before just how much sugar is in pumpkin pie, this is your wakeup call. Maybe it’s a good thing pumpkin pie is just a seasonal favorite! On its own, pumpkin is not a particularly sweet gourd. However, it does contain some benefits including fiber, potassium and a high vitamin C content. The potassium in pumpkins can have a positive effect on blood pressure, and the antioxidants could help prevent degenerative damage to the eyes.

In addition to desserts, pumpkin can be incorporated into soups, salads, preserves and even as a substitute for butter. Pureed pumpkin (like applesauce) is a great substitute for butter or oil in most baking recipes.

Pumpkin pie has been an American tradition since the very early days of our history. Did someone say history?

Here’s a bit of trivia for you to share next time you’re asked to bring the dessert: 20

In 1654, Massachusetts Ship Captain Edward Johnson wrote that as New England prospered, people prepared “apples, pears, and quince tarts instead of their former pumpkin pies.” At the time, pumpkin pie existed in many forms, only a few of which would be familiar to us today. A 1653 French cookbook instructed chefs to boil the pumpkin in milk and strain it before putting it in a crust. English writer Hannah Woolley’s 1670 “Gentlewoman’s Companion” advocated a pie filled with alternating layers of pumpkin and apple, spiced rosemary, sweet marjoram and handful of thyme. Sometimes a crust was unnecessary; an early New England recipe involved filling a hollowed-out pumpkin with spiced, sweetened milk and cooking it directly in a fire.

And an English version of the same preparation had the pumpkin stuffed with sliced apples. (history.com)

The crust To be perfectly honest, I seriously considered buying the pie crust from a store for this recipe and just giving the ingredients for a homemade crust in case YOU wanted to make your own.

Well. I made the pie crust for this recipe and while I was still not completely happy with the results, it worked better than most. I have had issues with pie crust since I began baking, and even the simplest of recipes has me pulling out my hair. One thing I like about this pastry crust recipe is that the oil and flour stick together well and pre-baked it is much less crumbly than butter recipes. In the recipe given, I decreased the amount of water and increased the sugar by two teaspoons which helped in both texture and taste.

After it has been baked, the crust is flaky and smooth. It can be used with fillings other than

MINI PUMPKIN PIES Pie crust: 2 cups flour Pinch of salt 3 teaspoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cup oil 3 tablespoons cold water

Pumpkin pie filling: 2 small pumpkins 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 2 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

Whipped cream: 1 cup heavy whipping cream 2 tablespoons sugar

Pie crust directions: Whisk together the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder. Add oil and water and stir with a fork (or your hands) until the dough is evenly moistened. Pat the dough across the bottom of muffin tin (or pie pan) and up the sides.

The memories What memories do you have that were shared over a slice of pumpkin pie? The first pumpkin pie memory I can think of is, of course, at Thanksgiving. I remember going to Nana and Papa’s home in the Bay Area — the only time during the year that I saw my cousins from my dad’s side of the family.

Upon arrival, we were always shy for the first hour or so as aunts and uncles planted sloppy kisses on our cheeks. But soon and inevitably, hide-n-seek or tag would ensue and continue through the house and around the backyard until it was time for dinner. I recall popping large black olives onto my fingertips

Pumpkin pie directions: Cut pumpkins into quarters and remove the seeds (save them for roasting!). Place on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350 oven for 40 minutes. Remove from oven, but keep oven on at 350 degrees. Let pumpkins cool, and then peel skin off. Place pumpkin in food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Measure two cups of pumpkin puree and place in a large bowl. Pour in sweetened condensed milk, eggs, vanilla, spices and brown sugar. Whisk until the mixture is smooth, then pour it into the prepared pie crusts. Bake mini pies for 25 minutes.

Whipped cream: While the pies are cooling, pour heavy whipping cream and sugar into a mason jar. Shake the jar until the cream becomes whipped cream - about 5 minutes. Be careful not to under-shake, or it will be runny, or over-shake, or it will turn to sweet butter. Pile whipped cream on cooled or refrigerated pie and enjoy.

and cheerfully biting them off one by one, my feet dangling over the edge of a folding chair. My siblings, cousins and I piled our plates high with all of Nana’s scrumptious dishes: buttered mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, turkey, rolls and candied yams. But the best part of the meal came after we had cleared our plates: The pumpkin pie. Nana’s cooking is amazing, but her baking is simply miraculous. I have a vivid memory of standing beside the kitchen counter, paper plate held high, as Nana placed a thick sliver of pie in the middle. “Do you want whipped cream?”

She asked, knowing the answer. I nodded ferociously and watched as a large spoon dipped into the Cool Whip container and hovered over my pie. With a satisfying splat, it swirled atop the pie and dripped down the sides onto the plate.

Although the pie was, indeed, sweet and delicious, the memory is so much more than the pie. It is my Nana, and the sound of her voice asking me if I wanted whipped cream, and running up and down the driveway with my cousins, and sitting on Papa’s lap while “Little Rascals” played on the TV in the background. It’s not as if these memories wouldn’t have happened without a slice of pie, but for me, the pumpkin pie is a annual reminder of warmth, love and family.

As you bake these mini pies, or any special traditional dessert this season, remember that you’re not only making a tasty dessert — you’re making memories.

A

t the time when Marrillyn Lockerbie, Victoria Laiosa and Tammy Meredith were training for their private pilot licenses, all the instructors at Lincoln Airport, and Sunshine Flyers and in Marin County were male.

Today, aviation is still largely a male-dominated profession, but through the encouragement and support of groups like The Ninety-Nines, more women are taking the yoke into their own hands and turning their flying dreams to reality.

Marrillyn Lockerbie, an Auburn resident, learned to fly a Taildragger in Marin County.

Before she married her husband, Don, of 62 years, he told her that he was going to earn his pilot license and own an airplane. When he earned his license and they started flying together, Lockerbie decided she should know how to land the plane in the event of an emergency.

“Then I got the bug,” she said.

Lockerbie earned her private license in 1969 — a time when men dominated aviation and women on planes were primarily stewardesses or passengers. Female pilots were a rarity in the ‘60s, and even today only 3 percent of pilots worldwide are women.

Lockerbie recalled a common occurrence of walking off

the runway with her four children and dog in tow. She said the men standing nearby at the airport would look at her, astonished, and ask, “Who’s flying the plane?”

Now, at the age of 82, Lockerbie doesn’t fly anymore, but she can still copilot. After several decades of flying a Cessna 172 Skyhawk and a Cessna 170 Taildragger, Lockerbie never lost the love of aviation. “I just flew,” she said, “me and the guys.”

Victoria Laiosa, an Auburn resident, has been around airplanes since she was 8 years old. As a child, Laiosa’s family often drove their motor home to the airport and watched the planes take off and land on the runway. Now a wife and mother, Laiosa enjoys bringing her own family to eat at Wings Grill and watch the planes soar through the blue sky above Auburn.

Laiosa works for an air ambulance company and worked often with pilots, but had never flown a plane herself. After years of curiosity and with the support of her family, Laiosa began training for a private pilot license in September of 2017 while still working full time and is now a pilot.

Laiosa’s first encounter with The Ninety-Nines was two days before her “checkride” or final exam. Her checkride was canceled and rescheduled several times due to weather or broken aircrafts and she was in “a bubble of pre-checkride madness,” feeling discouraged and frustrated. In the lounge

tips she picked up from the pilots around Sunshine Flyers helped her to learn more about the aviation world.

Meredith is co-founder of a rescue group and has flown planes to rescue animals during fires or other emergencies.

While she was in training, and experiencing some medical impediments, Meredith heard about a group called The Ninety-Nines. She joined the group and was immediately comforted by their support and encouragement.

“Being with the women pilots made a huge difference,” Meredith said. “I would have just sat and home and cried and never come out to the airport. It truly made all the difference.

It kept me going.”

“I was re-hooked,” Laiosa said. “She really got me through that moment.”

Tammy Meredith, an Applegate resident, grew up surrounded by airplanes. Her father worked in Korea doing ground refueling and during family outings, if there was ever an opportunity to ride in plane or helicopter, they would do it.

Four years ago, while working part time in the Sunshine Flyers office, Meredith was given an intro flight as a gift. Soon after, she began the process of obtaining her pilot license and became a pilot in January of this year. Meredith said the bits of knowledge and

The Ninety-Nines is an international organization of licensed, female pilots from 44 countries around the world. Founded in 1929 by 99 women, Amelia Earhart was named as the first, unofficial president. This nonprofit, membership corporation boasts that nearly all women in aviation have been or are members of The Ninety-Nines.

Lockerbie has held the position of secretary for Placer Gold Chapter Ninety-Nines for the past 20 years, and Meredith is the group’s chair. They meet at the Auburn Airport, offer support to new pilots and fly together. In the past, the chapter also offered a STEM program for Girl Scouts.

Student pilots are welcome to join and can also apply for scholarships through the group. The annual dues — or lifetime membership — is a small price when compared to the camaraderie and support that is shared throughout The Ninety-Nines. The women help each other by combining resources, splitting fuel costs, attending safety seminars together and volunteering at air shows in Grass Valley and Auburn.

In addition to an annual meeting with groups from around the world, The Ninety-Nines offers support and a large network to help share information.

“We keep each other going,” Meredith said.

Emergency: Learning from mistakes As with any prodigious enterprise, mistakes are bound to appear. But they can often im-

part valuable lessons that wouldn’t otherwise have been learned.

Laiosa recalled a time she almost took off with one magneto (airplanes have two magnetos, left and right, each of which fires one spark plug per cylinder, allowing the engine to operate at full power.). As she was preparing for departure, Laiosa remembered a similar story someone had done shared with her. She flipped on the second magneto and the flight went on as planned.

“Thank goodness I heard that story,” she said. “You can really learn from other people’s mistakes.”

Meredith’s first emergency was during the typical pre-flight inspection. But without realizing it, she accidentally punched in the wrong frequency on the way from the Auburn Airport to the Lincoln Airport. After taking off, she switched over the radio to communicate with Lincoln; there was no one on the other end.

“For a nanosecond my first thought was ‘I can never land!’” said Meredith. “It absolutely scared me to death, but my training kicked in and I did what I was supposed to and didn’t realize it.”

Without a place to land, Meredith steered her aircraft to circle and climb until she could figure out what to do. She ended up landing safely and learned to remain calm during emergencies.

The stuff pilots are made of So what does it take to be a pilot? According to Laiosa, Lockerbie and Meredith, it takes a combination of resources, desire, and a knowledge of science and art.

The classes, flying hours and instructional training all take money, time and dedication.

However, there are scholarships available through The Ninety-Nines and other organizations. An understanding of science is crucial to navigate airspeed and altitude, but artist ability is what makes flying so fascinating and irresistible.

Although the path to becoming a pilot is not easy for men or women, it is especially helpful to have encouragement along the way.

The Ninety-Nines do just that for women, both in Placer County and around the world.

“Everyone has a struggle story — when they knew they wanted to fly and when they almost stopped,” Laiosa said. “You have to really be willing to push and get past that hurdle.”

This year’s tour features painters, printmakers, photographers, ceramicists, illustrators, jewelers, designers, woodworkers and more. Up to 30 locations on the tour will offer demonstrations and special projects.

On the tour this is a unique chance to meet artists in their natural habitats, view new works, see precious private collections, and buy original art in a wide range of media and styles. The tour allows art lovers the chance to see the artists’ workspace — the place where art is made — watch live demonstrations, and learn about the art process from concept to completion.
