Welcome E xcitement is growing in Loomis in anticipation of the Loomis Eggplant Festival as it returns to its roots, filling the town’s main street with food, music and art for the entire family. The Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce held the first Eggplant Festival on the street in 1987 and plans to provide another memorable community event this year. By hosting the Eggplant Festival on Taylor Road, “We hope to rekindle the friendly spirit of the original festival when the town used the street as its front porch and welcomed visitors to enjoy a day of small-town friendliness,” said Jenny Knisley, Loomis Basin Chamber executive director. Festival admission and parking are free. Events are spread on Taylor Road from High Hand Nursery to the Blue Goose Historic Fruit Shed, as well as the Train Depot parking lot at the junction of Horseshoe Bar and Taylor roads. Knisley said annual favorites such as the cooking contest, pancake breakfast and Eggonopolis activities are being offered as well

as something new in each part of the festival. “If it has been awhile since you’ve attended, you’ll be amazed by the breadth of things to do,” said Knisley. “From contests and DIY ‘Do it yourself demos’ to children’s fun zone, fine art, and three entertainment stages, it is a fantastic way to spend the day with friends and family.” The Loomis Chamber kicks off Eggplant Festival festivities with Purple Week starting Sunday, Sep. 30, through Saturday, Oct 6, when Loomis residents and merchants can get more involved. Local restaurants and shops are offering food and drink specials, sales and opportunities to win raffle prizes. :

The Loomis Mural Project pays tribute to the town’s rich agricultural history. The self-guided Loomis Legacy Loop self-guided tour gives residents and visitors to Loomis a close-up look at 14 fruit packing label murals. The murals, painted by local artisans, are reproductions of some of the colorful labels used by area ranchers and growers to identify the fruit packed in the wooden crates they used for shipping for nearly 70 years. The Loomis Mural Project is one way of remembering the town’s past, keeping it alive and sharing it with current and future generations. The fruit packing murals are replicas of fruit crate packing labels handpainted by local artists Brenda Dominguez, Jim Ingram, Lorayln Owen and Susan McAllister. Text #loomis 56512 for mobile tour and map. Guide by Cell is a free service now available on all Historic Murals. Simply dial (916) 512-1206 on your cell phone. Enter the number associated with each mural followed by the # sign, and you will hear a recorded message of the history behind each mural. Brenda Dominguez, who designed the 2018 Loomis Eggplant Festival poster, has 35 years of experience working in the arts and has attained her high level of skills through independent study. Dominguez works in many media, including drawing, using graphite and colored pencil; watercolor and pastel painting; and crafting with fiber arts, creating hand felting images as well as on gourds. Recently, she has added local mural painting and poster design to her achievements. Dominguez was born and raised in the Loomis Basin and has lived in the Town of Loomis with her family since 1991.

Participating and sharing in local art events has been a special passion for Dominguez. She has participated in a number of local art tours and is a founding member of the popular Loomis Art Loop held annually on Mothers’ Day weekend.
