boards is excess moisture, usually because of faulty drainage at the edges of t he roof. Water runoff during wet weather tends to keep the fascia and eave boards continually wet, and this promotes the growth fungus that feed on wood fibers.

The best way to prevent f u ng u s da mage i s to install drip flashing at the edges of your roof. Drip f la sh i ng consist s of L-shaped sheet meta l strips that extend from beneath the roofing material and lap over the edge of the eaves. Drip flashing promotes roof drainage so that wetness on the wood members is minimized.

Un f o r t u n a t e l y, m o s t building codes do not require the use of drip edge flashing. Instead, the code specifies that the roofing materials must be installed according to the specifications set forth by the manufacturer of the roofing material. In many cases, the roofing manufacturers advise the use of edge flashing as an option, but not as a requirement.

Meanwhile, roofing contractors often omit flashing in order to make their bids more competitive.

Anyone who is currently paying for eave repairs or the installation of a new roof should make sure the bu i lder or cont rac tor installs drip edge flashing.

Building a house according to code does not always ensure good quality, and

the arbitrary omission of drip flashing is a definite case in point. Drip flashing adds very little to the cost of roof installation and can prevent very costly repairs when you eventually sell your home.

About a month or so ago, Ross, an Arborist from American River Tree, came to my house to give me his opinion on what — if anything — was needed to ensure my home would be as safe as possible should a fire happen. I called Ross because some clients of mine used him for their CalFire Certification.

Ross made an appointment to come to my home and assess the trees surrounding my home. He was professional, knowledgeable and gave an honest opinion. Ross determined that we have done what we can around my house regarding fire preparedness, recommending we have him come back in a year or so to do some trimming.

understand the life of our oaks. I’m going to try and tell you what Ross told me, but, the details are a little blurry … . First, from what I have read, the Blue Oak tree is drought tolerant, able to live on dry hillsides in 39 California counties; so it is a hardy tree. However, the past couple of years, according to Ross, the tree has been struggling.

The Blue Oak likes to bud out sometime around late May. The Blue Oak prefers a certain temperature (I think somewhere in the mid 70s)
