cross Placer County, dark-green mandarin trees are dotted with vibrant orange citrus fruit during the Winter season. The region started planting them in the late 1950’s, after a disease devastated the thousands of pear trees that previously occupied the orchards. At the time, mandarins were a relatively unknown crop to the locals. Taking a gamble on growing this crop was risky at first and it took a few years of giving out free samples before these petite, easy-to-peel, sweet treats became a holiday staple in local homes. The Frank Aguilar family in Penryn was one such family to try. On their property were already several mandarin trees planted in the 1880’s by the Welsh. They weren’t alone though. Other local families- the Pilz, Struble, Poirier, Madison’s were also pioneers at growing these mandarins.

Summer is in full swing, and the Placer County Agriculture Department is in the midst of its busy season! My staff is mostly out in the field this time of year conducting inspections and working with our farmers and ranchers to ensure that everyone can get their crops to market while continuing to meet all of the many regulatory requirements that we must live with. I am constantly in awe of the amazing system California has in place to protect our agricultural industry and environment from invasive species, from U.S. Customs and Border Protection at our international ports and airports all the way down to the county’s local insect detection traps. Locally, the Placer County Agriculture Department’s pest prevention efforts are conducted through our pest detection, high-risk pest exclusion, nursery cleanliness, and pest eradication programs. Everything we do is in close consultation with our partners at the California Department of Food and Agriculture and USDA’s Animal Health and Safety Inspection Service to ensure that we are conducting our activities in a uniform and scientifically-based manner. One of the county’s most visible pest prevention activities is our pest detection program. Seasonal staff place and monitor SEE AG COMMISSIONER PAGE 19
