abound as well – charter a boat out of Bodega Bay for some salmon or halibut fishing, dive the rugged coastline for abalone, fly fish for Steelhead in the Russian River and hunt deer and wild boar in the woods.

Slower paced adventures abound as well – soar over vineyard-striped hills in an early morning balloon ride, drive the breathtakingly scenic back roads and explore dozens of inviting small towns, grab a picnic lunch to enjoy al fresco, relish being pampered at one of many world-class spas or just sit back and take it all in.

The style here is casual – bring comfortable shoes for hiking the trails and walking the vineyards; layers are a good idea, because warm days usually end in cool evenings; restaurant attire ranges from t-shirts and shorts to semi-formal – it’s pretty much up to you.

Sonoma County is easy to visit – it’s about an hour’s drive from San Francisco and Oakland International Airports and Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa offers direct Alaska Air flights to/from Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Las Vegas, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix and Minneapolis.

Wine Tasting 101 Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect.

Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through the wine country of California’s Central Coast.

Be aware, although some wineries don’t charge for tastings, most do. Figure an “average” tasting fee may be $10-$30. Many wineries will also waive the fee with a purchase, always ask. Ready to taste?

Let’s get started!

• Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.

• Don’t worry if you “don’t know good wine.”

“Good wine” is what you like. Period.

• You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast.

• You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like.

• Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass…and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon scented? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!

• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor.

(Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?

• Ask questions! Remember…there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and

your server is there to help you.

• Don’t feel self-conscious expressing your opinion, there is no right or wrong.

• Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle).

• Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($3-$10 generally).

• Enjoy yourself and remember, what you like today, you may not like tomorrow; your taste and palate may change, and that’s a good thing.

• Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white!

• Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit.

• Seek smaller, out of the way, boutique wineries.

• Hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine.

• Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette. Take time for lunch.

When picnicking at a winery, never drink wine from another winery.

• Try to plan ahead. Do some research to determine if there is a tasting fee, if appointments are necessary and the policy on dogs and children. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day.

• If possible have a designated driver. If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being.

• Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them.

• Enjoy yourself!

Taste the Difference

Taking these basic beer styles into consideration, one might ask how the taste profiles differ. The truth is that each style has its own characteristics and flavor profiles, just like you find with wine. These flavor profiles depend on how much the grains are roasted and the type of yeast used. Of course, where the ingredients are sourced from, how much of each is used and what kind of brewery techniques are implemented all matter as well. To simplify these styles though, we’ve broken down some of the quintessential characteristics of these beer styles: ALE: Depending on the kind of ale, you will taste very different flavor profiles. The color of the ale depends on how long the grain is roasted. A blond ale will be light, refreshing, sometimes fruity and usually with gentle hop characteristics, while an IPA (India pale ale) tends to be more aggressive on the palate with much stronger hop characteristics that might taste something akin to the smell of a pine forest.

Brown ales can be rather nutty, while wheat ales are quite bread-like, yeasty, and often fruity with notes of citrus and spices. These are just a few examples of what to expect in the wide category of ales.

STOUT: Stouts, like the name suggests, are rather robust beers that express dark flavors, due to the heavy roasting of the chosen grain. Creamy textures and roasted flavors of coffee, nuts, smoke, spice and chocolate abound in stouts.

LAGER: Like an ale, lagers also come in various forms, such as pale, golden and amber. Again, the the color of the lager depends on how long the grain is roasted.

In Napa Valley breweries, you will most likely be tasting a pale lager (which uses lightly roasted grain), because it is a very common type of American lager. These beers are crisp and light on the palate with mild flavor profiles—very drinkable!

While this is but a brief and simple overview of just a few beer styles, it will get you on your way to noticing the differences in the beer you enjoy when visiting Napa Valley breweries.

Wine Country doesn’t get more real than Sonoma Valley, whose rich soils mark the birthplace of California’s wine industry. It’s also the closest wine region to San Francisco, just 45 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Cradled between the Mayacamas and the Sonoma Mountain ranges, Sonoma Valley encompasses a rolling patchwork of vineyards, quaint farms and 13,000 acres of scenic parkland. In the center of town, the eight-acre Sonoma Plaza is a National Historic Landmark, strewn with sprawling shade trees and bordered by carefully preserved adobe buildings. Up the road in Glen Ellen, author and bohemian adventurer Jack London lived and wrote at his pristine Beauty Ranch, now an 800-acre state historic park.

any years ago when almost everyone thought Zinfandel .was white, I was given a bottle of Ravenswood Zin and nothing has been the same since. Ever have an epiphany?

Well that was mine and to this day I am eternally grateful.

None of this would have happened without the vision of Joel Peterson, affectionately known as the “Godfather of Zin” who always had a passion for wine. Starting out with a “garage” winery – and crushing his first four tons of grapes in 1976 right before a thunderstorm – he built Ravenswood into the largest producer of fine Zinfandel in the world, and continues to be very hands-on at the winery, and his dedication and encyclopedic knowledge shows in every bottle.

Nestled into the foothills of the Mayacamas Range that divides Sonoma and Napa counties, this fabled winery is literally at the end of the road. Once you arrive you can take it all in from their outdoor lounge perhaps with a sampling of local artisan cheeses to pair with the wines (MaySeptember). Overall it is a fun, light-hearted and friendly experience, self-described as rural and charmingly rustic (but not too rustic).

hose entering Sonoma from the south will receive a warm welcome to wine country with the opening of Sondra Bernstein’s Rhône Room at the property Sonoma Roadside, next to the Fat Pilgrim and Harvest Home.

The Rhône Room concept is, as are all of Bernstein’s creations, a collage of many elements. The first layer – a wine studio and lounge – serves as a tasting room where guests can enjoy a selection of the girl & the fig’s house Rhône varietal wines, as well as be introduced to exclusive and lesser-known offerings from local producers that focus in Rhône varietals.

n 2003, the Belmonte family opened VJB Vineyards and Cellars tasting room to offer limited-production Italian varietals alongside fresh culinary delights. Named in honor of Victor Joseph Belmonte, VJB’s mission is to celebrate life with the ones we love. As VJB evolved and case production increased, Henry Belmonte and his father, Vittorio Belmonte, looked for a place to accommodate the expansion. Wellington Winery provided a sizeable production facility that also allowed them to pursue their passion for crafting fine French-Bordeaux style wines. In 2014 Wellington Winery, with its 20 plus acres and charming tasting room, became the home for this exciting new winemaking endeavor!

The property is planted to a number of different varieties including three single-lot old vine Zinfandels dating back as early as 1882. With the re-opening of the Wellington property in the spring of 2017, the Belmonte family is excited for all the new experiences they will be able to offer to both the local community as well as visitors to Sonoma Valley. Wellington will feature a new barrel room, crush pad and garden, as well as other upgrades and enhancements such as a new parking lot and walking bridge to accommodate more visitors.

Buildings made of stone and rustic wood beams lend an Old World feel, and on sunny, pleasant days the winery’s piazza is full of happy visitors enjoying all that VJB has to offer.

The first stop is usually the tasting room bar where VJB’s friendly, knowledgeable staff walks guests through the tasting menu that features the winery’s limited production Italian varietals such as the estate Sangiovese or Montepulciano. Chances are visitors will try wines they’ve never tasted before and gain an appreciation for these rare, California-grown Italian varietals that are produced with an eye toward New World innovation and Old World sensibility.

Afterwards, guests can enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the piazza enjoying wood-fired pizzas and flatbreads from VJB’s Red Rooster Pizza Co. Crisp Neapolitan-style pizzas, calzones and flatbreads are delivered hot and fresh to guests’ tables to enjoy with one of VJB’s many wines available by the glass or bottle.

There is also a large selection of cheeses, salumi and antipasti in La Cucina, the onsite deli. Get a cheese and salumi platter to share or freshly pressed panini. STANDOUT WINES Italian varietals rarely grown outside of Italy are the big draw here, such as the Sagrantino, a rare, bold, red wine that’s known as one of the most tannic varietals in the world. The estate-grown Montepulciano is the perfect pairing for Italian dishes and admired amongst Cabernet Sauvignon fans for its similarities in body and dark fruit.

Wine Tasting in Petaluma With the approval of the Petaluma Gap as Sonoma County’s newest American Viticultural Area (AVA), the spotlight is on the city of Petaluma as a wine tasting destination.

Centered on the Petaluma River in southern Sonoma County, Petaluma is the county’s secondlargest city with 57,000-plus residents, and has a history rich in food and beverages. The annual Butter & Egg Days Parade in April celebrates Petaluma’s poultry and dairying heritage, while each March, the newer California Artisan Cheese Festival brings a new generation of farmhouse cheese producers together with local wines.

Petaluma is also a big beer, and more recently, spirits town, with the world-famous Lagunitas Brewery and an enclave of craft breweries and distilleries that are generally situated in a light industrial district on the east side of the 101 freeway. Handcrafted Award-Winning California Cheese Since 1865

B

uilding on a history that spans over 150 years, Marin French Cheese Company (or “The Cheese Factory” as they are known to locals) enjoys the distinction of being the longest continuallyoperating cheese company in America. Cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean only ten miles away from the historic ranch in Hicks Valley cascade over the rural land–providing exceptional grazing pastures for the Jersey, Holstein, and Guernsey cows, yielding the highest quality hormone-free milk for their cheesemaking.

All cheeses are handcrafted in 20-gallon buckets today, just as they were back in 1865. Using only fresh milk which arrives daily from neighboring dairies within 20 miles from the creamery, their commitment to naturally-made cheeses without preservatives and additives is a hallmark of Marin French.

Their signature cheese, Petite Breakfast, was created in the early 1900s due to a poultry disease epidemic, which in turn, created a shortage of eggs. Jefferson A. Thomson, the founder of the creamery, sold his fresh, un-ripened Brie to saloons where it was welcomed by the dockworkers as an alternate source of protein and as a substitute for pickled eggs. The Petite Breakfast (as it’s now called today) continues to be the creamery’s most popular cheese.

Visitors to the creamery’s cheese shop will experience free cheese tastings daily. There’s even a charming deli-café on-site with a large variety of cold and hot sandwiches, drinks, artisan food products and a variety of picnic foods that can be enjoyed with the entire family. Spread out a picnic blanket on the historic property either overlooking the picturesque pond, or nestled in the shaded redwood grove for a relaxing afternoon.

he winery estate on Westside Road in Healdsburg is located in the heart of Russian River Valley; a premiere growing region known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir. This is good news for Moshin Vineyards winemaker and owner Rick Moshin, who has turned a labor of love into a thriving and welcoming business.

Moshin, a former math professor at San Jose State University who loves Pinot, began tinkering with wine in his basement.

Opportunity knocked, and he and his family bought the property on Westside Road, which became his winemaker’s dream-cometrue and full time passion. The tasting room opened in 2005.

Moshin specializes in Pinot Noir, known as a finicky grape that needs to be handled tenderly, but can produce stellar and versatile results. The winery produces no less than 12 unique Pinot Noirs a year.

Enthusiastic pourers and other staff will guide visitors through a tasting of five wines from the rotating menu, highlighting Pinot Noir and several other small-lot varietals..

f you haven’t been up to Fritz Underground Winery lately, then you’re in for a treat when you arrive and explore their collection of new tasting experiences and events. The newly renovated and modern-design tasting room is perched atop a hill at the estate, with their outdoor tasting patio boasting gorgeous views of Dry Creek Valley. Built in the late 1970s by namesake, Mr. Jay Arthur Fritz, the winery was way ahead of its time. It was built with sustainability in mind – the three-level winery was built into the side of a hill, which naturally controls the interior temperatures. This three level construction also allows the winemaker to craft great wines with gravity flow, thus eliminating the need for using pumps to move the wines. Not using pumps equals less electricity, as well as allows us to limit oxidation and keep the flavor of the juice completely intact.

Now run by Jay’s son, Clayton, the winery is still dedicated to sustainability and producing excellent wines.

This place is really worth visiting! The wines are great, the building is unique, the picnic area is picturesque and the staff is fabulous!

The tasting room leads to an outdoor patio with expansive views of the premier winegrowing region of Dry Creek Valley, synonymous with Zinfandel. There, owner Tim Bucher sustainably farms 15 acres of vineyards to produce smalllot vintages of Rhône varietals such as Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier.

With 10 acres of olive orchards ranging from one to 180 years old, oil is produced on-site with both Italian stone and hammer mills.

The tasting room is the scenic backdrop for casual or intimate gatherings. A wood-fired pizza oven and culinary kitchen provide capabilities for gourmet wine, olive oil and food pairings.

Bucher’s ties to the music industry, as a board member of the Grammy Museum, bring well-known acts such as The Band Perry and Eric Church. The Foundation helps support music programs in public schools, something near and dear to Tim. Trattore has also hosted Farm Aid House Concerts in support of family farms with John Mellencamp and Grace Potter performing in years past.

Protecting the environment is high on Bucher’s priority list.

Trattore, which means tractor in Italian, runs on solar power, and all irrigation uses recycled water. Coming from a family of Swiss immigrant farmers, Bucher understands the need to protect the land for future generations.
