T

wo words: Cheeseburger taco.

This unique dish — and many more — can be found at Messy’s Tacos in Loomis.

Messy’s Tacos serves various eclectic, craft tacos and unique treats ranging from short rib tacos with goat cheese and arugula to classic shakes and churros.

Jamey Filipek, co-owner of Messy’s Tacos, always dreamed of owning the stand that sat across from her fiance Jesse Harris’s auto shop; and when the owners decided to sell it she jumped at the chance to make it her own.

Last year on Aug. 15, Messy’s Tacos opened its doors — and windows — to incoming customers to serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. Filipek’s daughter named the stand after Harris, who she calls “Messy Jesse.”

Since the opening, Messy’s has begun catering events in the area, launching its food truck and testing out innovative specials.

One of the many unique aspects of Messy’s Tacos is its trained chef that creates all the dishes.

“We have an actual chef here, which is unexpected at a fast food joint,” Filipek said. “We are more than just fast food.”

Richard Zapata, head chef, quit his job cooking for resorts in Tahoe to start Messy’s Tacos with Filipek. Zapata said he wanted more creative freedom and jumped at the chance to cook for the stand. continued on page 10

Messy’s Tacos has proven to be very family oriented: Zapata is Harris’s cousin and several of their eight employees are family members and close friends.

“We want to keep the hometown feeling through the atmosphere,” Filipek said.

The stand was previously home to Taylor’s Corner, an extension of Taylor’s burger shop before it moved back to its main location.

Sometimes customers show up thinking it’s still the old location still and crave burgers and shakes.

To accommodate these customers, Zapata created the cheeseburger taco that satisfies their cravings while staying true to the stand.

The taco is made with ground beef, white cheddar nacho cheese, tomato, French fries and green onions all on a flour tortilla. This combination does not make you miss the bun.

There is covered outdoor seating available, equipped with misters and heaters to accommodate the weather.

Messy’s Tacos is expanding its outdoor space to include a family fun area and a beer garden. Filipek said these changes should be completed in the next month.

“Because we keep it so small, we really put our heart and soul into what we do here,” Filipek said.

he first thing you see when you drive into the Mediterranean-inspired showplace is the pottery — from huge planters and fountains to statuary and brightly colored tiles. But, at Pottery World in Rocklin, the focus extends way beyond patio and garden to home furnishings, floral arrangements and art. There’s even a clothing and jewelry boutique. And the cafe is a popular spot for breakfast, lunch and a coffee break. There are also wine tasting events, banquet space and a monthly high tea.

The 3.3-acre home decor and design center is the venture of owners Jim and Sharon Rodda and it represents more than 40 years of hard work and a natural flair for design.

It began in 1974 when Jim Rodda began selling pottery at Denio’s Market in Roseville.

“Every week, he would drive down to Southern California and Mexico to select and purchase his inventory and bring it back to Sacramento to sell the next weekend,” marketing spokesman Bill Krawczyk said in a press release.

As the business grew, Rodda moved to a store near Auburn Boulevard and Madison Avenue in the Sacramento suburbs. He relocated to Rocklin in 2000 and opened a second store in El Dorado Hills in 2010.

“Jim had the vision that no one else was selling this caliber of furniture and pottery

in the area,” Krawczyk said. “With help from friends, he put it all together and created a retail destination.”

It is a family endeavor. Sharon Rodda is the store’s goodwill ambassador, greeting customers and discussing decorating strategies. Ann Garrett, the couple’s daughter, is head designer and buyer.

“She is responsible for all the beautiful and unique displays throughout the store, and the purchasing of all internal merchandise,” Krawczyk said. “She also collaborates with our customers and their interior and exterior design projects.”

Justin Garrett, Ann’s husband, is general manager in charge of day-to-day operations and major purchases.

Bill Rodda, Jim and Sharon’s son, is outside sales manager.

The stores attract hundreds of visitors daily, with the cafe often the first stop at the Rocklin store.

“They will come in for breakfast or lunch, and then look around,” Krawczyk said. “It’s a nice way to spend an afternoon.”

Vignettes scattered throughout the exterior and interior showcase how to place pottery, furniture and artistic elements to the best advantage. A roofed area outdoors provides shady ambiance to browse the wide variety of fountains and garden

pieces.

The focus is on unique and one-of-a-kind items, Krawczyk said.

He estimates there are at least 1,000 pieces of pottery on display. The large pottery vases are elegant and they are also heavy, reflecting artisanship of times gone by. These days, there’s the option of resin pots, designed with the same precision but weighing much less.

There are also touches of whimsy here and there. A large black bear made of resin welcomes visitors at the entrance to the indoor showroom. His upward paw provides sufficient space to sit for a photo, a popular activity for kids.

A towering oak saved during construction is flanked by a large resin sasquatch as another peeks around the trunk of the tree.

Not far away is a “life size” statue of an extraterrestrial.

On a recent weekday, visitors Mitra Sabbaghian and Nasrin Salamati stopped to have their photo taken with it.

Sabbaghian, an El Dorado Hills resident, said she is a frequent visitor to the store “Everything is so (unique) and (so much is) one of a kind and there’s excellent customer service,” she said.

Salamati, visiting from Montreal, said she includes a stop at Pottery World whenever she is in town.

“I come here to eat and buy things to take back home, especially the flowers, ” she said.

Among the draws of Pottery World are unique art pieces that the Rodda family discovers at shows across the U.S. and internationally.

Among those on display currently are a couple of life-size horses created from pieces of driftwood. A couple of teak benches situated near a display table are as perfect for a conversation as they are conversation pieces.

Much of the traditional furniture — sofas, chairs and tables — is manufactured in North Carolina, Krawczyk said.

The store is also a go-to spot for holiday decor. Halloween and Thanksgiving items are already on display in the huge showroom.

makes art out of leftover parts

ay Aubrey’s “Self Control” has its own corner in Blue Line Arts Gallery’s Membership Medley exhibition on view through Sept. 8.

It was created out of metal parts that Aubrey collects and it includes two knobs “that were kicking around for two years in my garage,” he said.

“The base is a vintage Montgomery Ward rototiller,” he explained. “If you look at it up close, you can see the old Montgomery Ward logo. I love to leave clues about the origin around my pieces. All my pieces have a history.”

Aubrey was born in Germany, a self-described “Air Force brat.”

“I think I came out of the womb as an artist,” he said. “Some people have a gift. The Lord blessed me with this creativity.”

The recently retired garage door contractor found ample supplies for his art during his working years.

“I was exposed to a lot of steel, metal and fabrication parts and then I just found myself experimenting with garage door parts and leftover items. One thing led to another,” he said. “When I see something, I have a vision for what I see and I build something around that, whether it be an auto pan off a car or a wheel off a train — it is continued on page 17

ugust was Membership Medley month at Blue Line Arts Gallery in Roseville, showcasing the paintings, sculpture, fabric arts and pottery creations of its members.

But the nonprofit gallery is more than the beauty displayed on its walls. It’s a motivating force in Roseville, giving visitors the opportunity to view notable artists, providing up-and-coming artists a place to show their work, nurturing creativity in youth through workshops and events and putting an emphasis on continued learning for all ages.

Under the guidance of co-interim Executive Directors MaryTess Mayall and Brooke Abrames, Blue Line is flourishing as a gathering place to enjoy the arts.

“We are more of an arts center than a gallery,” said Abrames, who joined the staff in April, initially as a development associate.

She and Mayall are enthusiastic about the gallery’s role in the community.

“Arts and culture go together,” Abrames said. “I love working with artists and encouraging creativity in everyone. I am also interested in drawing the arts and business community together — promoting arts and artists promotes economic growth and just makes the community a better place to live. This gallery is unique. We do such a wide array of programs.”

irrelevant.”

He always has multiple projects in the works at his home studio.

“I’m sure many artists are like me. A lot of people I talk to seem to share that trait — that the piece tells the artist what it wants to be. And then you have to know where to stop.”

Currently Aubrey is working on a Tower of Babel, as well as a two-piece room divider made of mixed metals.

Another piece that has triggered his imagination has become a gong.

“It got its start as a spring tube from the capitol building ...,” he said. “I rescued it from the scrapper and turned it into a piece of art. The gong came about because when I bumped the metal, it had a beautiful ring to it.”

So he suspended it and is burnishing his vision.

In addition to exhibiting at Blue Line, Aubrey has displayed his work, including “Self Control,” at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. He was awarded a second place in show for that one. He has also won a first place and an award of merit, he said.

Aubrey enjoys creating in other media, too. He does collage using vintage paper from magazine articles and he likes to work with wood.

“I incorporate wood into a lot of pieces — wood and metal mixed,” he said. “And I also like to do glass.”

His artwork takes up most of his free time.

“I try to go to my studio every day,” he said.

The gallery has about 450 members, of which three-fourths are professional artists.

It is supported through memberships, art sales, grants, fundraisers, donors and corporate sponsors. The Vernon Street building’s display areas are designed to accommodate large exhibitions along with smaller specialized showings, including student entries.

The gallery’s many workshops offer something for everyone — from budding artists to professionals. Its children’s programs cover with range of topics.

September/October youth programs include an Art & Nature series, Creative CORE Art Exploration Graphic Design, Drawing in the Gallery, Baby and Me in the Gallery, Painting in the Gallery, Science of Color and Chorus Line Kids.

The sessions vary in length, some running an hour, others somewhat longer. Cost varies, with members getting a reduced rate.

On the third Saturday of the month, there’s a wine and paint night. It begins with a featured artist speaker and includes live music along with light refreshments.

“It’s a great place to meet and talk to local artists and meet the art community,” Abrames said.

On Symphony Nights, Auburn Symphony ensembles perform at the gallery.

The next Symphony Night will be a clarinet quartet on Oct. 20 and Avalon Strings on Nov. 8. The concerts are free to members and $5 for non-members.

Mayall and Abrames are looking toward bringing back downtown Roseville’s art walks, which will be held the third Saturday of the month.

“We are working with businesses to sign up,” Abrames said.

The walks will feature artists’ works that will rotate each month. And there will be pop-up performance art.

As part of its community outreach, the gallery is providing arts consultancy for a Mercy housing development in the area that will be completed later this year.

“Blue Line has a call out to artists for hanging pieces that would be in the

lobby and we’re curating work from the community to be featured in the common areas,” Abrames said.

The gallery is also coordinating with the Downtown Roseville Partnership on a mural project, which will see the creation of five murals in the Vernon Street area.

The two co-directors share a vision for the future.

“We are taking the gallery in a cool direction now under that leadership,” Abrames said. That includes exploring partnerships with other arts organizations in the area.



Mayall is a fiber artist who will next have a show at High Hand Gallery in Loomis. She has been at Blue Line Arts for two years.

Curator for the gallery is well known ceramics artist Tony Natsoulas. The current Membership Medley exhibition runs through Sept. 8. “The tour offers a great day of going with friends or by yourself, walking through the homes to both admire and getting ideas, as well as strolling through the beautiful gardens.”

PR Co-Chairperson, Harriet Garland said that attendees last year seemed to just enjoy everything about the home tour in general, but the most common comment was how much they loved touring the historic homes and learning some of the history of the homes from the owners.

Included in the home tour is the Woman’s Clubhouse; here, attendees will be able to tour the historic building in the heart of Lincoln, built in 1924.

Vendors will also have their wares displayed throughout the day. They will include fashion accessories, handmade cards, gift tags, What the Fudge in Lincoln, handmade baby items and highfashion jewelry.

“Home tour patrons will enjoy complementary

finger foods including appetizers and sweet treats, fresh fruit and coffee, ice tea and water while visiting the vendors and taking in the charm of the interior of the Woman’s Clubhouse,” Cathy Graf, refreshments chairperson said.

Home tour guests will also be able to win various gifts including a wine wall with 20 bottles of wine, a beautiful handmade quilt and many more goodies.

Additionally, each vendor will also be giving away a gift of their choice.

The Women’s Club of Lincoln established the first home and garden tour in Lincoln after they needed a fundraiser to bring their building into ADA compliance. Proceeds from the annual Home and Garden Tour goes toward the ADA fundraising for the clubhouse. Currently, they have raised enough funds to complete phase one of the project, building a ramp and a new door for everyone to gain entrance; however, they have a five-year plan to complete the restrooms and other items that need to be made compliant.

Like previous years, the event will feature two kid zones, live performances and food trucks. Stage performances will be happening on two stages — one presented by youth groups and one new stage.

“An additional stage was added this year, featuring the Incredibles,” Kristi LaRoche, recreation supervisor for the City of Roseville said. “The Incredibles will be leading a superpower train activity.”

Also new for families to enjoy is a small bubble play area. LaRoche explains that all activities are designed primarily for kids 12 and under, however, everyone in the family can enjoy the variety of activities.

There will be a truck exploration zone, featuring a variety of vehicles including police, fire, solid waste and electric vehicles.

For all ages to enjoy, there will be food trucks, and over 50 family-friendly vendors including sports organizations, places to go and family services.

“The vendor spaces are great opportunities to interact with vendors about places, services and products for the entire family,” LaRoche said.

ring your family, bicycles and helmets out to Mahany Park on Saturday, Oct. 6, to learn about bicycle safety at Roseville’s 25th annual free Bikefest.

“Bike Fest is really meant to be a great way for families to come out and learn more about bike safety,” Helen Dyda, marketing and communications analyst II said.

“We want to make sure they know how to properly wear helmets, they know the safe way to ride, and realize it is a fun way to get around.”

There are opportunities for beginners and more advanced riders to learn how to safely ride and operate a bike as well as learn the rules of the road. There are a variety of stations that include helmet fittings, bicycle safety inspections, and fun obstacle courses.

The obstacle courses are created to teach kids how to look over their shoulder, signal, stop safely, get off their bike to go across streets and more. There is also a small ramp with volunteers on either side to help kids go up and over.

The City of Roseville is currently expecting 300 to 350 participants and over 200 parents and guardians to be in attendance. Each year they have at least 100 volunteers who help to put on this event.

“This event started 25 years ago with a grant from the Office of Traffic and Safety — a one-year-one-time, $1,000 grant to make this event happen,” Sue Schooley, Transportation Planner, TSM Coordinator said. “It was so successful that the City of Roseville has continued to do the event ever since.”

They go out and fundraise and partner with the community, including local businesses and nonprofits, to make this annual event happen.

Eggplant Festival staff report

T

he Loomis Eggplant Festival will return to its roots, filling the town’s main street with food, music and art for the entire family. The Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce held the first Eggplant Festival on the street in 1987 and plans to provide another memorable community event this year on Saturday, Oct. 6.

“We hope to rekindle the friendly spirit of the original festival when the town used the street as its front porch and welcomed visitors to enjoy a day of small-town friendliness,” said Jenny Knisley, Loomis Basin Chamber executive director.

Festival admission and parking are free. Events are spread on Taylor Road from High Hand Nursery to the Blue Goose Historic Fruit Shed, as well as the Train Depot parking lot at the junction of Horseshoe Bar and Taylor roads.

Knisley said annual favorites such as the cooking contest, demos, pancake breakfast and Eggonopolis activities will be offered as well as something new in each part of the festival.

“If it has been awhile since you’ve attended, you’ll be amazed by the breadth of things to do,” Knisley said. “From contests and DIY ‘Do it yourself demos’ to children’s fun zone, fine art, and three entertainment stages, it is a fantastic way to spend the day with friends and family.”

The Loomis Chamber will kick off Eggplant Festival festivities with Purple Week starting Sunday, Sept. 30, when Loomis residents and merchants can get more involved. Local restaurants and shops will offer food and drink specials, sales and opportunities to win raffle prizes.

kinds of tomatoes

rower Dave Faoro loves gardening but he has a special affinity for tomatoes.

At his Veneto Gardens in Newcastle, he tends nearly 60 varieties of all shapes and sizes.

“That’s my thing,” he said. “I like tomatoes. They taste good.”

Faoro’s roots run deep in Italy’s Venice region.

“My dad’s family is from there,” he said. “Our climate is similar. You see the farms and things growing and you would think you were in the Central Valley ... (My family) has had vegetable gardens forever. My father and grandfather had them. In Italian families, you always have a vegetable garden and tomatoes are always there.”

Faoro gardens with two goals at the forefront.

“One is trying to find very nice new types of tomatoes that I want to pursue,” he said. “The other goal is supporting the Placer Food Bank. It’s not just about producing some cool types of tomatoes. I also need to grow a lot of tomatoes that people want to buy and eat.”

He also works with breeders in testing new varieties.

“I am always trying out new things,” he said. “I get small amounts of seed to (test). Then I write up a review for (the breeder) — what I think about it, how well it grows, my thoughts about taste and where I think it needs improvement.”

And he does his own experiments, working to create a certain size, color and taste by combining two varieties.

“One started from seed my family brought me from Italy,” he said. “I’ve been working on that for a few years — trying to make it into something a little different. It’s a hobby.”

When doing a test variety, he grows two plants and places each in a separate area of the garden.

“I’m trying to get a little bit of sampling of how they might grow and not just in one place,” he said.

The technical aspects to appeal to him.

“I have a science background. I look at things from a scientific approach,” he said. “I made a career in software engineering. My

first degree was in biology. My biology is always there and science and observation are part of me.”

His collaboration with breeders started about five years ago.

“Typically, I go through every year and make notes about how plants are growing and producing and what fruit tastes like,” he said. “Then I make a decision in December on what is going to make the cut.”

For harvest bounty, he grows the Big Beef and First Prize varieties of red beefsteak tomatoes.

Then there’s an abundance of cherry tomatoes.

“The ones that do well are the Juliets (red, plum shaped with a balanced taste), Sungold (orange and extremely sweet) and Nugget (golden color, oval and mild taste). They are very good. Throw them into salads or just pop them into your mouth.”

Many of his experimental types are saladettes.

“They are bigger than cherry tomatoes and smaller than slicing tomatoes,” he said. “What is nice is that they are probably in the size range of two-inches long by an inch-and-a-half around. You cut them into quarters and they are great for salads.

He grows saladettes in numerous colors, among them the Clementine (orange) and Lucinda (green/yellow stripes).

“They have interesting flavors, hold their shape and have depth,” he said. “The flavor of these goes well with a simple vinegar and oil dressing. You don’t need to use the heavy flavored salad dressings.”

In his view, the tomato is often underestimated.

“You can talk about tomatoes the same way you talk about wines — taste and smell — all the nuances,” he said. “You have tomato tastings and people realize they have all these different flavors — not like what you buy at the store.”

Faoro praises the health benefits, too — particularly anthocyanin.

“It makes plants purple,” he said. “Those purple pigments are considered a healthy nutrient.”

“It’s cherry tomato size,” he said. “It starts out bright purple and then turns yellow orange.”

Another is the Indio kumquat variety.

Faoro and his wife purchased the Newcastle property in 1997 and he had the garden going within a couple of years. He’s been perfecting soil and growing conditions since then.

“I use a concept that’s called no-till. I don’t rototill. In the early days, I did break up the soil. But I moved to the no-till method about 10 or 12 years ago.”

The idea is to keep the microbes, worms and other living organisms intact. It’s similar to leaves falling from the trees and building up compost on the surface.

Insects loosen the soil and bring the nutrients down, he explained.

He adds composted horse manure as a soil amendment and also adds alfalfa pellets and other slow-release organic fertilizers.. ”What I like about slow-release organic fertilizers is that it takes a while for them to be used. Microbes break them down as opposed to water soluble fertilizers that you might get at the store.

They tend to last longer and provide nutrients in a more even way,” he said.

Every two or three years he adds a little rock dust.

“I’ve seen some research that it improves taste and quality,” he said. “(It is) mined rock that has all sort of microbe nutrients in it.”

July and August are peak production months. On a recent morning, Faoro picked 40 pounds of tomatoes, with still plenty left on the vine.

He sells his produce at a small farmstand on the property and also has a customer mailing list for special orders.

Cut them in half and place them on a cookie sheet in the oven at the lowest heat setting.

“Leave them there until they become a little leathery,” he said.

“You don’t want them dry as a bone. They should still be moist in the middle.”

They are great as a pizza topping or even as a snack. They will last for weeks in the fridge and months in the freezer.

“Don’t leave them out on the counter he said. “The intensity of the taste is like eating fruit leather.”

njoy all the fresh flavors of summer with this spicy, scrumptious vegetarian summer chili. The combination of crisp, garden produce mixed with fresh garlic will satisfy any afternoon cravings. With savory flavors and a rich, garlic side of roasted garlic toast, you’ll wish summer would never end — even with its intense heat! Chili is a great dish to bring to family gatherings, barbecues or office potlucks. It is quick and simple, and can be made with variations depending on desired ingredients.

VEGETARIAN SUMMER CHILI:

Tomatoes, garlic and three types of pepper: What could go wrong? If I could add tomatoes and garlic to every meal, I would — and often do. Tomatoes plucked fresh from the garden or a local farmers’ market are the way to go. If you don’t believe me, try doing a taste test with a tomato from a grocery store that has been heaped on a mound of others in the produce department, and with an imperfectly shaped tomato from an outdoor market. I am confident that

the quality and flavor of the garden tomato will be evident.

I think the ingredient that may prevent some from giving this recipe a try is the tofu. Tofu is a somewhat unusual substance and for those who have never tried it, could look more like Playdough than food.

Whenever I encounter someone who says they don’t like tofu — usually because they have never tried it in a good recipe — I tell them why I like it: Tofu is a tasteless protein base of soy with an egg-like texture that takes on whatever flavor it is mixed with.

Throw some tofu in a pan with a bit of oil and taco seasoning: vegetarian tacos. Simmer some coconut milk and curry with small bites of tofu: Vegetarian curry. Marinade several slices of tofu in peanut butter and soy sauce: Nutty Asian tofu.

There are so many ways to use tofu as an alternative to meat. One serving of tofu contains about 10 grams of protein and less than 100 calories.

It is also an excellent source of amino acids, iron, calcium and other micro-nutrients.

Vegetarian summer chili INGREDIENTS: 1 tablespoon olive oil ½ purple onion, chopped ½ or 1 Anaheim pepper, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound tofu, crumbled 3 teaspoons oregano 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 green bell pepper, chopped 2 cans crushed tomato 1 cup diced tomato 1 can kidney beans, not drained 1 can cannellini beans, drained

Roasted garlic INGREDIENTS: Olive oil Several heads of garlic

DIRECTIONS: Heat olive oil in a large pot on medium heat. Add onions and simmer 5 minutes or until they become translucent. Add Anaheim pepper, garlic, tofu, spices and bell pepper. Let cook for about 10 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients, stir, and cover.

Simmer on low heat for 35 minutes.

Serve chili with green onions, sour cream and shredded cheese.

Serves 8-10 people.

DIRECTIONS: Remove papery skin from garlic while leaving cloves intact. Place garlic on a square piece of aluminum foil and drizzle with olive oil. Wrap garlic loosely in foil and place on cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 25. Allow garlic to cool for a few minutes, and then unwrap and spread on Italian bread or any bread of your choosing.

This combination of tomato, garlic, beans, onion, other vegetables and spices makes a delicious dish to serve at a summer barbecue or bring to a potluck. If a large group of people need to be fed, this chili will fill the hungry bellies of eight to 10 people. It can also be heated up for leftovers or frozen.

ROASTED GARLIC

There’s nothing like the delicious scent of roasted garlic greeting guests as they are welcomed into your home. Whether it is served on bread or as an added flavor to any dish, roasted garlic is a mouthwatering treat.

The recipe for this roasted garlic is almost too simple.

Just wrap the garlic heads in foil with a bit of olive oil drizzled inside and place it in the over for about 25

minutes. When they are ready, the garlic cloves will be so tender that they can be squeezed out of their shape and onto a warm slice of Italian bread like thick butter.

If you think you liked garlic before this recipe, get ready to fall in love.

One out of 700 babies in the United States is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate, a congenital condition that forms in utero, when the lip or mouth don’t form properly.

Although many of these children have access to medical care to treat the condition, often known as orofacial cleft, the life-changing surgery is much more difficult to get in developing countries, where 1 in 300 babies are born with the deformity.

One of my colleagues at Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center is out to change that.

For the past 17 years, Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgeon Brian Rubinstein, MD, has volunteered his time and expertise to improve the lives of more than 2,000 children and adults, mostly in Asia, South America and Africa. He’s one of many physicians I have the privilege of working with who are making a significant difference outside their normal work hours, in both the local and global community.

“It’s extremely rewarding,” said Rubinstein, who is also a pediatric head and neck surgeon and takes teams of volunteers into places such as the Philippines, Ecuador, and Peru. “The people in need of surgeries are so appreciative, but we get so much out of it, too, when we see their faces and realize how much their lives change with such a small surgery.”

Dr. Rubinstein first became involved in these medical missions during medical training in 2001 as chief resident at University of California-Davis Medical Center. By 2007 he started his own nonprofit

organization, Faces of Tomorrow, which has taken dozens of medical volunteers on an annual mission to perform surgeries on patients who otherwise won’t have access to specialized healthcare.

“A big problem in these countries is there’s nobody to perform these types of craniofacial surgeries — typically insurance plans or the government won’t cover the procedures,” Rubinstein said.

The other big problem is that children whose faces look deformed are often made fun of by other kids, so they end up quitting school. Then nobody wants to hire them, so they’re destined for a life of poverty, ridicule and solitude.

Rubinstein, his family members, and a team of volunteers — including speech therapists, dentists, orthodontists, anesthesiologists, nurses and head and neck surgeons, many from the Sacramento area — partner with local organizations, and the government, and set up shop in surgery centers where a typical procedure takes about two hours.

One of the more memorable patients was a Filipino teenager who reached out to Rubinstein on Facebook and asked if the team could fix his palate.

The boy would have to journey for two days by boat, bus and foot, to reach the hospital.

“He came back to see us again this year and said he wants to go to medical school,” Rubinstein said.

That experience inspired Rubinstein and his team to keep doing what they’re doing.

He’s now preparing for the next trip, in January, to Myanmar.
