Although it was built on a rock and not rock and roll, and Nashville is known as “music city,” Folsom has its own special place when it comes to smoke, lights and talented musicians on stage. It’s known as Folsom Live and it’s set to bring dancing in the streets back to Historic Folsom once again on Saturday, Sept. 22.

Four stages will be rockin’ all night with a spectacular lineup of talent including Walter Trout, When Doves Cry, Tom Rigney and Flambeau, local fan favorite Island of Black & White, Dennis Jones and Earth to Mars: The Bruno Mars Experience and the Indie Band Stage featuring Nickel Slots.

In addition to the variety of musical talent at this event presented by the Greater Folsom Partnership, the event will feature food trucks, special ticket packages and more.

BLUES AND ROCK After years as an A-list side man with John Lee Hooker, John Mayall and Canned Heat, Walter has enjoyed playing his emotional brand of fired-up, hardcore guitar heavy music, writing and recording his own songs for over 20 years as a solo artist.

Following a life-threatening illness, Trout’s rebirth began with a successful liver transplant in May 2014 and gathered pace with 2015’s “Battle Scars,” the acclaimed studio album that channeled his neardeath experience into raw autobiographical songs.

“We have sweet crepes, savory crepes; we recently came out with crepesidillas and bubble wrap,” Tran said. “Crepesidillas are crepes with melted cheese and everything inside is warm. Bubble wrap is an egg puff wraps with ice cream and fruit inside.”

T-Crepes is unique not just in the way of crepes, but their drinks as well. From milk tea to fresh tea, the options are extensive. Things get interesting and unique with their blended and flavored milk drinks, all exploding with delicious flavors.

After receiving the business almost three months ago, Tran and her family went to work immediately — rebranding, expanding menu items and getting the word out that they are here to stay.

“From the day I received the store, I have been pushing out a lot of new products,” Tran said. “It’s really fun to see

how people react to it, and it makes me feel so good when they like it.”

Tran said one of her favorite things about her business are the younger customers.

“I love making crepes for the kids. When they eat it, it’s really nice to see the smile on their face,” she said. “I also love seeing people come back to us, as well as new people who are excited about our new drinks and crepe options.”

The crepe is a delicate item, and when made correctly, it is a work of art.

“I have been studying the crepe for a long time, coming up with new items,” Tran said. “You can have a crepe for lunch or you can have it for dinner. There is something here for everyone.”

ith fresh ingredients and family recipes, Alejandra Baza opened FreshMex Express Mexican Grill eight years ago and is still going strong.

Baza owns one of the longest-lasting non-corporation and non-chain Mexican restaurants in the area, and is proud. Baza has done so well in recent years that she opened a second location in Placerville.

“It makes me very proud because it means people like my food, and we are doing something good here,” Baza said. “I am proud to say we make everything here with the freshest produce we have.”

Some of the items include flautas, which is a traditional Mexican dish made with flour tortillas, tinga, tomatoes, chicken and chipotle sauce; pozole, which Baza makes with chicken and pork; as well as homemade chili rellenos.

Among the many customer favorites, Baza said the most popular item on her menu are the burritos because they are big and fresh.

When asked why she opened her own business, Baza said it wasn’t her dream, but her husband, Rafael Garcia’s dream.

“While it was my husband’s dream, this is a really nice way to meet people,” she said. “I like meeting new people, and I like the service aspect. I love when someone says my food is really good because it makes me feel good. These are my recipes.”

FreshMex’s atmosphere is fun and family-friendly. To Baza, it is really important what the child customers think.

“When I go out with my babies, most people don’t care what they think about the food. In this restaurant, we ask the kids what they want to try,” she said. “As a mom, that is special. As important as the adults are, so are the kids. Parents come in and say, ‘My kids love this place.’ That is really important to me. If kids like it, what else can you ask for?”

At FreshMex, customers receive quality Mexican food, but quickly. Baza said her restaurant isn’t fastfood, but fast-paced.

“This is a traditional fast-paced Mexican restaurant, and our products are healthy and really low on grease,” Baza said. “We grill our chicken and steak. Of course, we have many options and some have grease, but we have something for everyone.” ✶

with excitement FOLSOM GLOW RETURNS FOR SIXTH YEAR

STORY AND PHOTOS BY BILL SULLIVAN articipants of all ages will be glowing with excitement on Saturday evening, Oct. 6. In fact, some 1,700 people will literally be aglow. It’s the sixth annual “Folsom Glow,” and it’s sure to light up the streets as participants run and walk through the streets of the Historic District.

When it comes to events such as this, the City of Folsom’s Parks and Recreation Department works hard to create a family-friendly event. Much like the annual Wacky Dash, the Glow Run welcomes participants of all ages to partake in this unique non-competitive run that takes place after sundown with lots of fun attributes along its route.

“Folsom Glow is a unique idea, a great family event and can even be a date night,” said Sarah Trobee, with the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department.

“Where else can you go to have a huge, silly-string battle, a disc jockey dance party, a beach ball bash and a finish through foam all in one place?”

The two-and-a-half mile run/walk begins at 7:45 p.m. This year, it’s expected that all 1,700 entries will once again be claimed quickly online. Those who procrastinate will have the opportunity to get registered on a first-come, first-serve basis prior to the race. Race packets will also be given out one day early to those

Formerly known as the “Folsom Glow Run,” officials made a slight name change to the event this year, calling it just “Folsom Glow” to encourage more families to participate in the event and walk the streets of Folsom together.

“We really want to emphasize that this is primarily a walking event, a handful of kids usually sprint the entire event,” said Lesley Miller, of Folsom Parks and Recreation. “But the vast majority of folks walk the event to fully embrace the scene.”

Participants for the Glow Run are known to decorate themselves with glow sticks, neon jewelry, costumes, sparkles and lights. Part of the fun each year is showing off your creativity with your costume. Decorated or not, all finishers will receive a commemorative medal for participating in the event.

The start-finish line for this event will be at 905 Leidesdorff Street in the Historic District. A DJ will be on site that will include silly-string battles and more.

Participants will follow a route across the foot bridge, down the bike trail to Negro Bar where they will turn around and head back to the finish line by traveling over Lake Natoma Crossing.

Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome.

Proceeds from the event help fund Folsom’s community events and programs. ✶

ring your friends and family back to the days of Queen Elizabeth I in Tudor England for one weekend only in Folsom.

The 25th annual Renaissance Faire is returning to give people a chance to have an interactive experience with musicians, jugglers and the ribaldry of actors drawing them deeper into the magic of another period and time, said Marti Miernik, co-producer of the faire.

This special event takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 22 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Folsom Lions Park.

“Over 800 costumed performers will bring Shakespeare’s England to life with parades, pageants and fun townsfolk,” Miernik said, “offering continuous entertainment of spectacular variety spread throughout the village.”

During the event there is a two-fold storyline — Queen Elizabeth’s progress and Shakespeare’s development of a new play, she said.

“The rising young star of London’s theater scene, Shakespeare, faces a scourge like no other — a paralyzing bout of writer’s block while the great Elizabethan age of entertainment unfolds around him,” she said. “The festival will be the ultimate renaissance bash, a lively Dionysian party, where the guests enjoy turkey legs, exotic food, and drink as they banter with the myriad performers filling the streets.”

place during the event. This part of the event will include riders from Europe, Canada and the USA, she said.

“You get immediate entertainment, from the moment you tromp though the gates,” Miernik said. “Over 800 actors beautifully attired in period garments will transport you to another time and place. You will enjoy various stage shows, comedy and music on numerous stages as well as one on one interaction with actors of the faire. A number of guilds provide free games to play including a tower of Jenga, sword lessons, dancing lessons, acting parodies, sheep tossing, hobby horse racing and more.”

Entertainment is suitable for all ages.

“There is something for everyone at Folsom Renaissance Faire, from little kids to parents and grandparents,” Miernik said.

“Stage shows are family-friendly and for everyone. Jousting is for anyone who enjoys action and attraction of such sports.”

Each of 40 guilds will present a snippet of history to patrons as well as various attractions of their own. These include cooking shows, bow making, leather work, armor design and production, shooting off period gun salutes, military maneuvers, wool dying, various games to play, theater and ribaldry, she said.

Miernik’s favorite part of the annual event is seeing all of the costumes and hearing the old-fashioned speech, she said.

“I love the way we bring a sliver of history wrapped warmly in an entertaining manner to our patrons,” she said. “I love that you can learn something at the show while being entertained doing so. I enjoy seeing the glint in the eye of children and the young as they put their technological gizmos aside and play with our actors as they pass through the gates.”

Throughout the course of the event weekend they are anticipating to have 6,000 guests and encourage everyone to dress up, she said.

“Come out and play,” Miernik said. “This is a family-friendly show that everyone from the youngsters to grandparents will enjoy. You will be hooked on Folsom Renaissance Faire from the moment you cross the gate!” ✶

S

itting down in the newly opened Vin Uva in Granite Bay is relaxing and welcoming as you are greeted with smiles, excitement and is a place where everybody knows your name. Cue “Cheers” theme song. The wine tasting room opened July 12 and has already created conversation throughout the region.

Founded by managing members Joseph Smock, president, and Peter E. Story, winemaker and director of Vineyards, their story is unique, simple and local. In January 2015, while having a conversation Peter and Father Matthew Spencer simply were discussing that a vineyard would look beautiful on the Oblates’ property at Mount St. Joseph off Wells Avenue in Loomis.

“Peter organized a group of us together to see how we could pull this off,” Smock said. “The easiest way? To start a winery, start a company with private investors.”

Smock and Story put their initial money down and bought 20 tons of grapes in 2015 and made the wine.

Currently, they have 92 investors and most of them are within 10 miles of the area.

porting the order of priests in Loomis at St. Joseph Morello Catholic Church in Granite Bay or the romance of owning part of a winery, especially with Peter being here,” Smock said.

Story is a nationally recognized Napa winemaker and was the owner and winemaker at St. Helena Winery until “retiring” to Loomis in 2010. Derek Irwin, consulting winemaker works with Story to create unique and extraordinary wines for Mount Saint Joseph Wines.

Story explains that most of the early investors were retirees, others were the church parishioners.

“That loved the idea on how to support new seminaries from third world countries that didn’t have money to complete their education within the seminaries,” Story said.

Smock and Story designed the company to make it a larger organization, so they can have lots of people helping to create something meaningful for the community and the church. Story explains that his previous wine experience brought him to help create and invest in this LLC so that they can beautify the

Oblate’s property with a vineyard and get into the wine business.

Smock adds that Story is a traditionalist when it comes to making wine. The Sierra Foothill grapes are harvested at night then taken down to Napa before the sun comes up. They process the wine in Napa to avoid any mistakes within their wine. This process shows in the outcome and provides delicious, memorable wines.

Henry Farvo, director of sales explains that the other unique part of the business is that the investors are out in the field and learning how to work in the vineyard with Story.

“We are all new at this but with Peter’s direction we are all becoming very professional,” Farvo added. “When we come in and tell someone about the wine, it comes from the heart because they have actually done the work.”

Dogs will be able to play and swim in two separate pools. One is shallow and one has a deeper base to plunge into, she said.

Dogs are allowed to swim and frolic in the center’s activity pool, which features a pooch-pleasing play structure and sloped beach-style entry into the water, Miller said. For water-shy pups, there’s abundant lawn for romping, lounging and socializing.

“They can run on the grass or play fetch in the water,” Miller said. “It depends what the dogs are into. Owners should be aware their dogs won’t be going home dry.”

Once dogs are let inside the gate, owners can remove their leash and let the fun begin.

“Each year, every dog leaves and just crashes once they get into the car,” Miller said. “It is a great way to tire out your dog.”

This event is strictly for dogs only and people are not allowed to go into the pool during the event, except up to their ankles, she said. Additionally, there will be lifeguards on duty the whole time.

“This event is a fun alternative for those who don’t have kids and wouldn’t necessarily go to our other events,” Miller said. “It is a good opportunity for them to socialize.”

At the event there will be a number of dog vendors handing out samples which include Sparkles, Folsom Dog Resort, Veterinary Healing Center of Folsom and Folsom Animal Service will be on site.

Every owner is required to bring writing proof of their current animal license for their dog(s). The Folsom Animal Service (FAS) will be checking licenses and no dog will be let in until written proof is shown.

Folsom residents who need to purchase or renew their dog’s license prior to the event may do so from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at Folsom City Hall.

FAS will also have staff on site to provide rabies vaccinations, licenses and microchip implants, Miller said.

I

f you have ever wanted to be a part of an exclusive spa and be pampered like a king or queen, Organic Nails & Spa in Folsom may be your next stop.

This new salon and spa concept recently opened in June and has been a hit in the local community.

Having been in the nail industry for more than 10 years, co-owners Chuc and Thi Nguyen had ambitions of opening their own salon. The Nguyens approached friends Binh and Hana Dao for help and ultimately, became business partners. Hana also had experience in the nail industry, while Binh has been a chemist and college professor for years. Chuc, Hana and Thi have seen what goes on behind the scenes and wanted to make a change.

The four owners wanted to bring something unique and different to the Folsom area.

“When we built it, we considered a lot of the flaws in the nail industry, wanted to address them and do it correctly and ethically,” Binh said. “I read a New York Times article in 2015 about an investigation into the nail industry. They exposed all of the negative sides. Hana, Chuc and Thi are the insiders here and know a lot about it. We want to correct those flaws and set a trend for other salons.”

Binh discussed how they changed the salon experience in many ways. For example, he said typical nail technicians work on commissions and rush through as many services as possible to get paid more. At Organic Nails & Spa, all staff is on salary, so they don’t

have to speed through clients.

“We slowed down the services, so employees don’t rush,” Binh said. “It helps us provide better customer service and an overall relaxing experience for the customer.”

The spa has many aspects that add to the relaxing spa atmosphere including wine tasting, some of which made

It is one of few salons to have their own custom, stateof-the-art ventilation system.

“Every station (in the pedicure room and manicure room) has an outlet to suck in any fumes right at the source, so it’s pretty much a chemical-free smell,” Binh said. “We don’t use a lot of the traditional, toxic chemicals used in the industry. I remember going into a nail salon and my eyes would burn, and that is simply unacceptable. These nail technicians spend their whole day in that environment. Not only do we want our customers to be healthy, but our employees as well.”

Hana said building a salon with a healthy environment was very important to them.

“We wanted to build a salon that is different from others. We want to help make all people look beautiful and do it healthily,” Hana said. “The nail technicians should have a good environment to work in, and also the customers should be in a healthy environment.”

Binh and Hana said that in a typical salon, no one would be able to enjoy a glass of wine with toxic chemicals floating around, but at Organic Nails & Spa, customers with memberships receive a complementary wine tasting when they come in and are able to enjoy the wine in a toxin-free space.

From moscato to cabernet, Organic Nails & Spa can suit most anyone’s palate.

“We use non-toxic, vegan products that smell less. Even our nail polish remover is non- acetone,” Hana said.

From nail polishes, lotions and oils, all the way down to the nail polish remover, the spa keeps their word on using organic products.

“It’s less toxic on the skin; there is less of a smell, as well as other benefits,” Binh said. “I have been working on making our own organic nail polish remover, so I have been playing around with recipes.”

For customers who have acrylic nails from a different salon, acetone is available on-site as acrylic is difficult to remove.

Organic Nails & Spa offers a variety of spa services, from manicures and pedicures to facials and waxing.

Manicure services include top-of-the-line nail polish such as Chanel, Dior and Butter; Bio seaweed gel polish in a variety of colors, as well as a full set of dipping powder.

Dipping powder is a less harmless option for customers looking for an alternative to acrylic nails.

Manicure and pedicure packages come in basic or signature which includes services that would normally be extra charges.

Facials are an hour of relaxation, but the one product that steals the show is the Wine Lees Mask, which Binh patented.

“The mask is made with 100 percent wine lees, which is a natural product that is rich with antioxidants and anti-aging products,” Binh said. “It’s what makes red wine taste so good.”

Gold members pay a monthly $150 fee and can spend up to $150 per week on combined services. The membership works the same for the platinum members except their monthly fee is $200 and can spend up to $200 per week on combined services. Memberships include your own tool box, complimentary wine for you and any guest, and an invitation to any exclusive member-only events.

When asked why the two couples wanted to open their salon in Folsom, they said Folsom is a beautiful city and they want to be a part of the community.

“This is such a beautiful city,” Binh said. “I speak for everyone when I say we all want to be a part of this community and eventually be able to afford to live here. We love the people in this city; everyone has always been very welcoming.”

Hana said they know there is competition, as there are many nail salons, but at Organic Nails & Spa, they have the best customers.

Among the bold, hearty tastes of your traditional Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Zin, is the more discreet, less pretentious approach taken by the Barbera. Barbera is a wine grape that originated in the 13th century. Grown originally in the Piedmont region of Italy, the grape made its way to America in the late 1800s and eventually landed in California. As of 2000, Barbera was known to be the third most planted red grape variety in Italy, only slightly behind the long-known Sangiovese and Montepulciano varietals.

Perhaps Barbera has become so popular for growers because it produces good yields. Barbera is known for its full body while maintaining low tannins, making it gentle on the palette.

Barbera yields a deep plum color and packs aromas ranging from vanilla, clove and anise. Depending on the harvest time of this grape, the wine can be made heartier and more full-bodied than those of earlier harvests, by simply waiting a little longer to pick the grapes. This delay in picking tends to yield even stronger fruit flavors including black cherry, blackberry and plum.

Barbera was slow to come to the local market, being brought to Amador County in the 1970s, planted by winemaker Cary Gott of Montevina, now called Terra D’Oro, and expanded further by Dick Cooper of Cooper Vineyards. Cooper not only produces his own multi-award-winning Barberas, Cooper also sells premium grapes to other winemakers who have quickly become known to make some of the best Barberas in California.

Currently the Sierra Foothills is the second highest producer of Barbera wine, second only to the grape’s original birthplace, Italy. As a result of this steadily growing local interest in Barbera, the Amador Vintner’s Association hosts an annual Barbera Festival. This year will boast the festival’s eighth annual celebration, hosting wine and food from more than 70 wineries across California. So, if you haven’t caught on to the growing trend of the Barbera, it might be time to visit this year’s Barbera Festival taking place on Sept. 15 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.. I

n recent months the anticipation by Folsom residents looking forward to the high-profile L’Etape, California cycling event has been growing rapidly. However, cycling enthusiasts are going to have to wait a little bit longer for Folsom to get a taste of Le Tour de France as it has been announced the event will be postponed.

The 2018 L’Etape California by Le Tour de France, a mass participation bike ride set to take place in Folsom on Sunday, Sept. 2, has been postponed to Sunday, Oct. 28 due to current air quality and other issues caused by the nearby wildfires it was announced by the event’s partners AEG and the Folsom Department of Parks and Recreation.

“It is a difficult time in California, and this was a difficult call to make, but the current air quality conditions would not allow us to host the quality event that we pride ourselves on. The City of Folsom appreciates AEG’s commitment to putting the health and safety of our participating cyclists and volunteers first, and we thank the riders’ understanding and support,” said Folsom Mayor Steve Miklos.

“Holding L’Etape California in autumn will provide riders cooler temperatures and scenic views of the American River canyon and Sierra Nevada foothill fall colors. Our new date also provides visitors an opportunity to explore the region’s premier seasonal experiences, such as Apple Hill, and El Dorado and Amador County wineries during harvest season.”

Produced by AEG, owner/operators of the Amgen Tour of California with the support of A.S.O., owner and operator of the Tour de France, the annual L’Etape California by Le Tour de France is open to the public and road riders of

all skill levels.

“With the overall event experience and the safety of our participants and fans being our top priority, we believe that postponing L’Etape California to Oct. 28 was the best and most prudent path to take,” said Kristin Klein, president, Amgen Tour of California and executive vice president, AEG Sports. “We look forward to not only a great cycling event but the launch of the region’s recovery from these devastating fires.”

Riders who previously signed-up for the event’s original date will remain registered while space remains for new entries who can register for the Folsom-first weekend event which now begins on Saturday, Oct. 27 — a day filled with French food, sights, appearances from cycling legends, and family cycling fun — followed by the L’Etape ride on Sunday, Oct. 28.

L’Etape California by Le Tour de France is a ride designed to challenge cyclists on a course comparable to an Alps Mountain stage of the world’s most well-known cycling race. The second annual L’Etape California by Le Tour de France will take riders on a scenic hilly ride through the Sierra foothills in a region known for warm summer weather and sunshine. New for 2018, two route distances will be offered: Riders can experience the full ride through 90 miles 7,500 feet of climbing, or the short ride through 60 miles and 4,000 feet of climbing to navigate the scenic vistas of Folsom, an active community at the base of the Sierra Foothills which is well known for cycling and running.

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME BY STROLLING DOWN SUTTER STREET

I always thought that if I could have one superpower, it would be the ability to time travel.

Have you ever traveled somewhere that was so rich in history you could almost feel what it must have been like and wished you could go back in time to visit? I’ve thought that so many times while strolling the Folsom Historic District. What would William Leidesdorff or Captain Folsom think if they time traveled into 2018? Would they like the changes made here over the past 170 years or so since they first arrived in Granite City?

A big part of my role in the Folsom Historic District is to promote the businesses here and help to protect the sense of place, history and community. To my knowledge, no other place in Folsom changes as much as the Historic District does, but yet, remains the same. If you haven’t been to the Historic District recently, I encourage you to return and witness the changes happening here. There are some great events this month, so if you need an excuse to come back, check out the events at the end of this column.

Amador Vintners Association to host the

largest wine events of the year

hile many visitors to the Amador County Wine region are familiar with their favorite wineries; there are two upcoming major winetasting events hosted by the Amador Vintners Association that can help wine aficionados explore new wineries, while enjoying great food at the same time.

There are over 40 wineries part of the Amador Vintners Association and with the upcoming Barbera Festival and Big Crush events, this organization clearly brings exposure to the Amador wine country.

BARBERA FESTIVAL The eighth annual Barbera Festival will take place on Sept.

15 in Amador County at the historical Terra d’Oro Winery which is home to some of the oldest Barbera vineyards in California. Barbera is a favorite varietal found in the Amador County area and is quickly becoming a dining staple throughout the United States. This beautiful outdoor wine and food event will allow visitors to taste Barbera

wines from approximately 70 wineries while listening to live music, have the opportunity to participate in interactive educational programs and sample gourmet food from the areas top chefs and restaurants.

A portion of the festival proceeds will benefit the Amador Community Foundation.

THE BIG CRUSH The Big Crush, a two-day wine tasting extravaganza with the additional Grape Stomp Event will take place Friday Oct. 5 through Sunday Oct. 7. For those who are brave enough to stomp on grapes the event kicks off on Friday (this is a separate ticket) from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. A barbecue chicken and tri-tip dinner will be served with delicious sides courtesy of Taste restaurant and Beth Sogaard Catering/Amador Vintage Market, with additional items from Pokerville Market accompanied by live music.

Tickets are $35 and grape stompers interested in participating will compete in three heats of five teams of two for

Take a trip back in time at Sutter Creek Heritage Days

ENTERTAINER STAFF Take a stroll through Sutter Creek’s colorful past and celebrate its historic legacy. Come one, come all as Sutter Creek open the doors to visitors to experience the past and a bit of what it was like to live in the town during the Gold Rush. Try a hand at gold panning, take a ride on a real stage coach, hear historians tell stories of the past and visit Sutter Creeks’ amazing historical sites, some that are rarely open to the public. All this fun and it’s free, too.

Sutter Creek is known as the “Jewel of the Motherlode” because of the rich veins of gold that were discovered there.

During the Gold Rush, thousands flocked to the town to make their fortune. Over $160 million in gold ($5 billion by current standards) was extracted from this region between 1851 and 1942.

Self-guided tours: Maps will be available at all venues … pick one up and start having fun at any location.

Seldom Told Tales of Sutter Creek: Local Historian Frank Tortorich will do free walking tours on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m., limited to the first 20 people who arrive.

Meet at the corner of Main Street and Keyes. It will last about an hour to an hour and a half. Then Frank will also do a free presentation at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, at the Sutter Creek Theater, called “49ers — How They Got Here.”

Gold panning and Minnie Provis Park: The earliest gold seekers worked the local creek and stream bed with simple gold pans. To celebrate those endeavors, at Minnie Provis Park there will be gold panning demonstrations and everything you need to try your hand at panning to see just how it was done. Then stroll through Miners’ Bend Park, at the south end of town, and learn the history of the mines. The early mines of this area are featured on the interpretive signs of the park.

stage coach, provided by “Doc” Wiser, from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Central Eureka Mine, up the hill from Miners’ Bend, will be on the map to visit as a representation of these famous mines. The Old Eureka Mine was first opened in 1852 and it was operated independently until 1924 when it merged with the Central Eureka Mine, the combined properties operated as the Central Eureka Mine, which is credited with producing $36 million in gold. Hetty Green, the one-time richest woman in the world, was the owner of the Old Eureka Mine.

Sutter Creek’s Original Fire Departments: Sutter Creek’s old firehouse at 18 Main St. is now a fire museum and will be open to visitors. Sutter Creek’s first fire truck is being recreated here in a 1930s auto workshop, along with the Firemen’s Meeting Hall and other displays. Fire history volunteers will also be on site at Sutter Creek’s first fire house on Spanish Street and at the fire bell tower on Main Street at City Hall.

Sutter Creek Auditorium and City Hall: Located at 18 Main St., this 89-year-old building houses locally painted murals depicting Sutter Creek’s colorful history.

Historic Methodist Church: At 14 Main St., this beautiful church has all the charm of yesteryear, a sight to behold.

The Knight Foundry: Located on Eureka Street, is the last remaining water run foundry in the county. It will be open with the machines running and historians on hand to give you an amazing insight to the production that went on there.

Monteverde General Store museum: Opened as a country store in 1896 and still displays all the paraphernalia of the past on its shelves. A local historian will be there to tell you its history.

Sutter Creek Historic Grammar School: The large, two-story brick building served as a school from 1870 to

Sutter Creek Theater: A former silent film theater, which just turned 100 years old, will be open both Saturday and Sunday for you to see and view a variety of presentations. This beautiful theater has events every weekend with live music and now showing films too. ✶

DISTANT CELLARS

A winery that goes the distance

hile there is unquestionably an abundance of wineries in Amador County, there are only a handful with a unique story to tell and Distant Cellars is certainly one that makes this list.

The winery was created by Steven Gaiser and his sons back in 2009, had a spectacular harvest debut and the family-owned winery has been going on strong from there. And, visitors to this winery should also take note that Gaiser and his sons have a long history of donating to the National Fireman’s Association and donate 30 percent of the proceeds of their specially crafted Tribute Wines to the fallen firefighters families. As of today, the winery has donated close to $100,000 to this organization.

What can a wine aficionado expect when visiting this beautiful location? In addition to a patio area complete with picturesque views perfect for sipping wine and an outdoor picnic, the wines are nothing short of spectacular. Distant Cellars is now presenting their 2014 wines including a Zinfandel, Tribute and Drifter, which are already available to wine club members in their summer shipment. Visitors can also taste these varietals Thursday through Sunday in the tasting room which is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (just call ahead of time for a reservation if you plan on showing up in a limo).

Distant Cellars is now serving a small amuse-bouche with any tasting which is comprised of an assortment of cheeses, olives, pumpkin seed crackers and homemade sausages. â– AMADOR ENTERTAINER STAFF Tickets are now on sale for the 21st annual Winefest, the popular walk-about wine-tasting event will take place Nov. 10 in Sutter Creek on Main Street. Over 20 Amador County wineries will each be pouring in the unique shops. Check-in starts at 4 p.m. in the Sutter Creek Auditorium, 18 Main St. where guests will receive an event glass, map, and wrist band and may start bidding on the silent auctions of art, wines, and premier offerings of gifts and event packages.

Main Street shops will be ready for the wine-tasting at 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. Then, the auditorium will feature live music, tastings of desserts and after-dinner wines, and final auction bidding.

The event raises funds for AmadorArts, a nonprofit established 36 years ago to embed the arts in schools and the community.

Autumn is upon us and just a few miles up the road from Folsom a special place has opened for the season that provides for a special outing that is fun for all ages. It’s known as Apple Hill, a small community of 50 ranches that draws more than a million visitors to the region annually this time of year.

While the area draws its share of locals from September to December, Apple Hill draws travelers the far reaches of California and even the Pacific Northwest. It’s this large attraction that benefits the surrounding communities in El Dorado County, and certainly boosts the tourism into Folsom this time of year.

The Highway 50 corridor is the common route to Apple Hill. With its large draw from the Central Valley as well as the Bay Area, Folsom provides an ideal stopping place, either on their way up the hill or on their way down to enjoy Folsom’s many dining options, shopping venues and lodging.

The Apple Hill area is known for its rural ambiance and tasty products that extend well beyond that of just apples.

This consists numerous ranches, that are the largest concentration of apple growers in California featuring 16 different varieties of apples and various other fruits. It’s not all just fruit when you visit, it’s bake shops packed with tasty homemade pies, caramel apples, dumplings and more. The area is home to nearly two dozen wineries as well. Altogether the

“It seems like yesterday when we first started really,” said Evelyn Abel, who has been operating her family farm “Abel’s Acres since 1976. “I look forward to it every year. It’s great to see all of the families come out and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The kids love it no matter where they travel from. It’s good wholesome fun and we need that these days.”

Four generations of family continue the tradition of running the Abel ranch right alongside the patriarch at the place where many travel from afar just for a taste her famous homemade fudge and handmade buttermilk apple pie.

In addition to the great eats and the ingredients to make your own special treats, the Apple Hill Farms have many great products beyond the apple

alone. The association has its very own cookbook that can be purchased at various locations. Many of the member farms host craft vendors and special events for the whole family to enjoy. From Johnny Appleseed Day celebrations to fishing, pony rides, hay rides and amazing mazes, no youngster or young at heart will find themselves board in this form of nature’s playground.

Born in Germany to a Chinese-German father and Hungarian mother, he began playing guitar at 11, and traveled extensively through Europe and Asia intent on fully absorbing each musical tradition he encountered. In 1989, he settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and founded his band Luna Negra. Nouveau Flamenco was born, beginning with a self-produced local release called Marita: the rest is history.

Liebert has since become one of the most successful instrumental artists of the

He wrapped up his decade with “Epic” with 2001’s “Little Wing” and went back to Higher Octave Music, releasing a lush album of lullabies called In the “Arms of Love” in 2002 and an album with Luna Negra XL called “The Santa Fe Sessions” (2003).

“La Semana” (2004) was the first all-new band album in five years, followed by “Winter Rose” (2005), which featured original pieces, classical music and Christmas songs. In 2006, Liebert’s record label SSRI released “One Guitar,” his first solo guitar recording, which received Liebert’s fourth nomination for a Grammy. His newest releases are “Up Close” (2008), which is a binaural dummy head surround sound recording, and “The Scent of Light” (2008), a labor of five years.

O

ne of Folsom’s live theater groups is celebrating in a big way, following, the recent announcement of the 2017-18 Elly Award nominations by the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance.

The Sutter Street Theatre bested 73 different theater companies this year with the most overall nominations.

This feat comes just one year after they were among the top six in entries last year.

This year, Sutter Street Theatre tops the charts with an impressive 41 nominations overall.

They are joined locally in nomination by Folsom Lake College’s Falcon Eye Theater who Folsom High School and both Vista del Lago and Oak Ridge High School who also received nominations.

Sutter Street Theatre earned nominations for five adult productions and 36 youth productions. The theater is in its 11th year of operation, located in the heart of Folsom’s Historic District.

They have been voted the “Best of the Best” local live theater by readers of the Folsom Telegraph year after year.

“We are very proud and honored to receive 41 Elly nominations for excellence in theater,” said Allen Schmeltz, artistic associate director for Sutter Street Theatre. “Being acknowledged for something we love doing just further reinforces our goal to provide high quality entertainment for our patrons and especially for the young people who attend.”

Overall, 247 shows were submitted by 73 different theatre companies. Fifty-six theaters and 116 productions received nominations. This marks the fifth straight year that Sutter Street Theatre was among the top six community theater groups in the Sacramento region receiving the most nominations, coming in second to the Roseville Arts Academy.

The Elly Awards are named after the late Eleanor McClatchy, a devoted patron of the arts and former publisher of the Sacramento Bee. For more than 36 years, the Elly Awards celebrate excellence and the outstanding achievements of community theaters and artists in the greater Sacramento area. In recent years, they have grown from a local Sacramento tradition to now include theaters within a 70-mile radius.

In honor of the 36th annual Elly Awards, SARTA will be hosting two ceremonies this September, according to a media announcement.

The Folsom Lake Entertainer will be following up on the outcome of the 2018 Elly Awards. The youth awards were slated to be announced in early September. large parks. Folsom Ranch will include new public schools, adding a third high school, middle school and five elementary schools. In the core of the area, there are plans for a civic center, aquatic center, library, high-density housing and community recreation facility.

Traffic plans include a transit corridor, multiple transportation options and a design to encourage easy walkability.

Dakota, a Taylor Morrison community is the first to open in Folsom Ranch. Homes start in the low $500,000 range and they report that response seems to be overwhelming.

Lennar homes has an extensive presence in the Sacramento region and will also be part of Folsom Ranch.

Growth is not just limited to Folsom Ranch.

Lennar is building near Empire Ranch Golf Course and continues to build beautiful homes in El Dorado Hills. The Heritage community is an active adult community.

Cypress at Serrano includes golf course sites and is planning other communities in the area.

Blackstone continues to grow with lots of new homes and beautiful views.

Growth is here. There are too many communities to mention in this article. Toll Brothers, Renasci Homes and more are all building wonderful communities in our region. And let’s not forget about the apartment buildings that are also being built.

Bottom line is that the world continues to learn what we’ve known for a very long time: This is an excellent place to live.

While Folsom has been a city for more than 70 years, it continues to grow. I’ve lived in this area for more than 20 years and have seen remarkable growth and change. The growth will continue in Folsom and surrounding areas, and it’s a popular topic of discussion.

I am frequently asked by buyers and sellers about how growth impacts this area and real estate home values. Folsom has had a shortage of homes for sale in recent years, creating a seller’s market. Anyone that reads my column regularly probably knows that. Folsom Ranch can increase the market for both buyers and sellers, so I think it can be an exciting time for Folsom residents.

More than a decade ago, Folsom voters overwhelmingly passed Measure W, which called for the City of Folsom to take control of a 3,500-acre area bounded by Highway 50, White Rock Road, Prairie City Road and the El Dorado County line.

Welcome to Folsom Ranch — future home to more than 11,000 new homes to suit a wide variety of family living situations and income levels. The landscape of this area south of Highway 50 will change dramatically throughout the coming years. Folsom Ranch will take 30 or more years to complete. The plan is to incorporate what is already so wonderful about Folsom and increase its smalltown feel. The plan calls for lots of features to increase Folsom’s already high-ranking as a great place to raise a family. Open space and hiking/biking trails are a cornerstone of Folsom. Folsom Ranch plans include 1,000 acres permanently protected as open space and 138 acres of community parks including two
