CELEBRATING THE RESIDENTIAL PARK COMMUNITIES FOR 64 YEARS
OOOOk-lahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain… By Alison Elsner
O
klahoma!” is the first musical written by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Set in farm country outside the town of Claremore, Oklahoma Territory, in 1906, it tells the story of farm girl Laurey Williams and her courtship by two rival suitors, cowboy Curly McLain and the sinister and
frightening farmhand Jud Fry. A secondary romance involves cowboy Will Parker and his flirtatious fiancée, Ado Annie. The original Broadway production opened on March 31, 1943. It was a box-office smash and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances, later enjoying award-winning revivals, national and foreign tours and an Academy Award-winning 1955 film adaptation. It has
long been a popular choice for school and community productions, earning Rodgers and Hammerstein a special Pulitzer Prize in 1944. Sing-along musical numbers include “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” “The Surrey with The Fringe on Top” and, of course, “Oklahoma.” If you’ve never seen this classic musical, it’s high time you took advan-
tage of this pleasing romp that will make your day and your life just a bit more complete. “Oklahoma!” takes the stage September 28 through October 7, with showtimes at 2, 7 and 8 p.m. For tickets visit the Palm Canyon Theatre box office at 538 North Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs or visit palmcanyontheatre.org.

he Cathedral City Senior Center is hosting its annual Health & Wellness fair for Seniors and the local community Friday, September 14 from 9 am to 12 noon. exhibitors will be on hand to provide information about their products or services. The event is sponsored by Desert Oasis Health Care. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have not yet issued their prognostication for the severity of the Flu Season for 2018/19. However, they continue to say, especially for older persons, to get their flu shot prior to the end of October and certainly as soon as it’s available in the Fall.
“We’re so proud to have this annual event in our facility,” notes Bob McKechnie, Executive Director of the Cathedral City Senior Center. “Everyone is going to go home with good information about their health, wellness and how to take better care of themselves. Also, we believe this is the first ‘free’ flu shot clinic for the 2018 season.” “It’s part of our mission to improve the quality of life for our seniors and this Annual Health
& Wellness Event is our most prominent activity,” says Gillian Cross, Board President. The Cathedral City Senior Center is a nonprofit organization – 501 (c) (3) and is solely supported by gifts, grants and donations. It is located at 37171 West Buddy Rogers Ave. in Cathedral City. Just on the South Side of Highway 111 across from the Cathedral City Government and entertainment complex.
