Martina McBride: Powerhouse pipes and empowering message By Alison Elsner
M
artina McBride’s name and voice have become synonymous with patriotism and female empowerment. This multiple Grammy nominee has sold over 18 million albums, including 20 Top 10 singles and six No. 1 hits. She is a four-time CMA Vocalist of the Year who released her debut album in 1991.
She followed that up with the blockbuster album “The Way That I Am,” with its massive hits “My Baby Loves Me” and McBride’s signature song, “Independence Day.” In 1995, she released her follow up album “Wild Angels” with its Top Five hit, “Safe in The Arms of Love.” McBride has been awarded 14 Gold Records, nine Platinum honors, three Double Platinum Records
and two Triple Platinum Awards. She has found success as an author, about to release her second cookbook. McBride is also known for her humanitarian work. She was awarded the Covenant House Beacon of Hope Award and Music Business Association’s prestigious 2015 Harry Chapin Memorial Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic efforts on behalf
of domestic violence. It’s easy to see why fans consider McBride the whole package and then some. Open Cockpit thrusts visitors into aviation history By Alison Elsner
C
alling all flyboys and flygirls. On almost every Saturday in September, enthusiasts can climb into the pilot’s seat in some of the most incredible aircraft in history. Guests will feel what it was like to be in the throes of combat during World War II or the Korean or Vietnam Wars while at the
controls of a vintage warbird like the F7F Tigercat, the P-47 Thunderbolt, B-25 Mitchell Bomber, P-63 King Cobra and more. Aircraft hangars are fully airconditioned, and the Open Cockpit opportunities are free with regular paid admission. While you’re there, be sure to take the whole tour, which features four hangars organized by theme (Pacific-Navy, European-Army,
small and Major General Kenneth P. Miles), computer flight simulators, Tuskegee Airmen mural, Women Pilots of WWII exhibit, Korean War Remembrance Wall, daily documentaries, the large wall European Map with interactive displays, Freedom Fighters’ Café, the gift shop with fascinating World War II, military and aviation items and dozens of other attractions. Visi-
tors can also tour the interior of a flyable B-17 and C-47, when they are not flying, that is. Open Cockpits are held Septermber 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Palm Springs Air Museum located at 745 N. Gene Autry Trail in Palm Springs.
