Year one in the Jeff Walters coaching era at Del Oro High is in the books and now ancient history All things considered, last season, despite Del Oro being a young and untested team mixing with a new coach, the Golden Eagles showed quite well in 2017. After going through an up-and-down regular season, the Black and Gold caught fire in the playoffs and reached the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II title game for the third straight year. A 22-0 loss to Granite Bay notwithstanding, Del Oro’s overall record of 8-6 was nothing to scoff at. “Last year was a learning experience for everyone; myself, players and coaches included,” said Walters. “Being in the second season now, we’re expecting good things this year.” While losing several talented players to graduation, the Golden Eagles return a solid core of experienced players that will be interjected by a junior group that went 9-1 a year ago at the JV level. “The kids have basically hit the ground running,” said Walters. “They know what we expect of them, and have been working hard.” A year ago, the Golden Eagles split LOOMIS –

quarterback duties between senior Josh Gazzaniga and junior Carson Jarratt. Jarratt, a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder, threw for 1,634 yards and 15 touchdowns last season and shined in the playoffs. Jarratt is back, but the Del Oro offense could have a different look at times with senior Dante Pericin also lining up behind center. “Last year, we were pretty set on what we wanted to do on offense,” said Walters. “This year, I see us putting our best athletes where they can help us the most.” Del Oro will have two of its top receivers returning in Matt Smart, who grabbed 37 passes for 660 yards in 2017, and Johnny Guzman, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound speedster who latched on to 29 passes for 587 yards and four scores. However, the Golden Eagles will have to replace standout All-League running back Brice Edwards, who rushed for 1,087 yards and scored 13 TDs. A GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA PUBLICATION

“We’ll do a lot with our two slot backs lining up in different spots in the backfield,” said Walters. Three-year varsity starter Dawson Hurst should get a lot of those snaps along with versatile Josh Moore and Sheldon Conde up from the JVs. “We’ll have some depth back there for sure,” said Walters. “I like the makeup of our running backs and what they bring to the table.” Del Oro’s offensive front line, called by Walters “the most athletic line I’ve been involved in five years as a head coach,” should also show strong this season. They include Tatuo Martinson (6-foot-2, 255 lbs), David Veske (6 feet, 230), Cameron Nelson (6 feet, 230) and Wyatt Berry (6foot-2, 260). On defense, Hurst returns after being a First Team All-Sierra Foothill League secondary pick in 2017. He’ll be joined by Martinson, Berry, Pericin and linebacker Charlie Rogers as the Golden Eagles’ top returnees.

Walters also singled out Carson Westlake as a “player to watch” in 2018. “Carson is a great example of a Del Oro football player,” said Walters. “He’s a hard worker who shows up on time and is ready to do what he has to to help the team.” Senior Ryan Whalley will inherit the place-kicking chores from Conor Calvert, now at UC Davis. As far as Del Oro’s schedule this season, Walters notes that the slate is once again a meat grinder again. “We open with Amador Valley, who I know well from my days in the Bay Area,” said the Del Oro coach. “They’ll be good, and then it’s Oak Grove at the Honor Bowl, and they have a back already offered by Washington.” Walters added, “Windsor will be good. They have a new coach but came on strong last season and did well in the playoffs. In league, we have a rivalry game with Granite Bay right off the bat. It should be exciting.”

New league, new challenges, same determination BY AARON JACKSON

The

Lincoln High School football team comes off a 2017 season that featured an 8-3 record and a secondplace finish in the Pioneer Valley League. In the first round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Playoffs, the Fighting Zebras lost to Del Oro by a score of 16-14 in a heartbreaker. In that final game of the season, the Zebras took the lead with a minute and a half to go. Following the kickoff, the Golden Eagles flew to midfield and kicked a game-winning 53-yard field goal for the victory. This season, Zebra Town’s football nation moves up to the newly formed Division III Foothill Valley League. After decades in the PVL, the new FVL will feature teams such as Nevada Union, Rio Linda, Oakmont, Ponderosa and Placer. Lincoln changed leagues and are now in Division II for the Sac-Joaquin Section. “We do have some history in playing these guys,” said head coach Chris Bean. “You obviously have a very talented Placer team that is returning a ridiculous amount of starters from their near-state championship run. They aren’t the only ones; you throw in Nevada Union and Ponderosa, who we’ve battled the last two years, along with Rio Linda, who has one of the best running backs in the section. It’s going to be a challenge.” Rio Linda running back Cameron Skattebo had nearly 1,000 yards rushing

and nine touchdowns last season. After losing big elements from both the offense and defense due to graduation, the 2018 Lincoln group is still focused and confident they can get back to the big stage. “It’s the same as every year; there’s a culture and a legacy that has now been established,” said Bean. “We expect nothing but winning seasons. We have a chance to lay down a bit of history as being the first team to win an FVL title.” The Zebras lost key players on both offense and defense, including defensive lineman Dylan Quinn and center Kenneth Lucas. The defense also lost linebackers Jack Boatman (144 tackles) and Antonio Nevarez (112 tackles, 6 1/2 sacks) and strong safety Carlo Rodriguez (87 tackles). Returning for his second season at linebacker is junior Grady Manley, who had 107 tackles. In total, the Zebras are replacing 14 of their 22 starters from last season. To prepare for the new league, Lincoln has upped its schedule to include other “big boys” such as Oak Ridge (Aug. 17), Antelope (Aug. 24), Whitney (Sept. 17), PVL foe Center (Sept. 14) and Eureka (Sept. 21). On offense, this year’s squad will be without star receiver James Sweet, who was third in pass catching for the entire section and ranked 26th in the state. Replacing Sweet is returning senior Harry Rounds, who had 448 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2017. A GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA PUBLICATION

In spite of some losses due to graduation, the 2018 Lincoln High football team will still be counting on a strong defense to take them into the new Foothill Valley League. The Zebras also have other stars returning on offense, including kicker Brett Woolley, who went 4-for-5 last year on field goals. Running back Devin Coffer returns, coming off a 700-yard rushing season with 225 yards receiving. Coffer also had eight touchdowns to his credit. “We’re struggling on our offensive line, but our offense overall is strong,” Bean said. “Our defense has a lot of depth returning, and our defensive line is our strength. “We feel very confident that as long as these kids continue to buy in and put out the effort expected, we’re going to be competitive in every single game we play.” Essential to Bean’s offense is the one under center in returning, sought-after quarterback Tommy Turner. Turner threw for 2,465 yards and 28 touchdowns last fall. He had a 59.1 percent

completion percentage and a touchdownto-interception ratio of 2.8. “I want to see us put up 30 (points) a game, and I want to see us limit turnovers,” Turner said. “I’ve witnessed firsthand the work ethic being improved. We have been forced individually to buy into everything, and we know the challenge we face ahead.” Lincoln leaves behind a legacy in the PVL, but Bean and his staff have been building a culture prepared to make a big step into the future. It’s true a number of outstanding Zebras have come and gone, but there always seems to be someone in the wings just waiting for an opportunity to shine. “We’re more talented from an athletic standpoint this year, top to bottom,” Bean said. “That talent however doesn’t mean anything if it isn’t followed by leadership.”

New coach, same high expectations BY AARON DAY

ith high school football just on our doorstep, the Whitney Wildcats begins its 2018 football campaign. But this season will be unlike any other as the Wildcats make the transition from the highly competitive Capital Valley Conference to the Sierra Foothill League, one of the best and toughest football conferences in the state. Whitney faced much adversity last season after multiple California Interscholastic Federation infractions over a nearly three-year span, which resulted in a one-year postseason ban along with the resignations of head football coach Paul Doherty and defensive coordinator Marc Rubalcava prior to the 2017 campaign. Jesse Armas stepped in to coach on an interim basis and brought stability to the ‘Cats, although a season full of promise ended with Whitney finishing a disappointing 5-5 overall (4-3 CVC). The Wildcats also lost the services of Nick Eaton and Justin Kraft, both of whom graduated and accepted football scholarships from the University of California, Davis. To deal with Whitney’s issues heading into the SFL is new football head coach Zac McNally, who brings a winning pedigree to the ‘Cats. McNally played linebacker at powerhouse De La Salle High School. His team went on to win both state and national

championships in 2002 and 2003. McNally played collegiate football for Boise State as a preferred walk-on (2005) and Diablo Valley College (2006) before earning a full athletic scholarship with Northern Arizona University, where he was a starter from 2007–2009. He began coaching in 2010 at his NAU alma mater as an assistant linebacker coach. The following year, he served as a graduateassistant defensive line coach. McNally’s lone prep head coaching job

was at James Logan High School in Union City, where the Colts went 7-13 in his two seasons at the helm. Logan High made the playoffs last season before losing to Foothill of Pleasanton in the first round of the CIF North Coast Section Division I playoffs. McNally is well aware that expectations are high at Whitney as they enter the vaunted SFL. “It is going to be a playoff atmosphere and environment for every game in the SFL,” said McNally. “The league is full of

elite coaches and players, and I know the margin for error is very small. Each game will require relentless preparation, focus and physicality.” Helping with the transition to the SFL are former Oak Ridge coaches Ben Sweet and Kevin Lopina. Sweet will serve as the defensive coordinator while Lopina will be the offensive coordinator. Whitney will begin the season Aug. 24 on the road against Placer, state runnersup in Division IV. Their first league game will be against rival Rocklin Sept. 24 in the annual Quarry Bowl. Notable Returners Senior quarterback Robert Jones comes in with 15 total touchdowns last season. He took over under center partway through the season when the Wildcats’ fortunes took a downturn. Senior running back Sergio Sanchez picked up 502 rushing yards while the interim coaching staff searched for answers. Sanchez was one of those answers, who also

unsettled year. Senior lineman Wyatt Arbaugh brings a

he Rocklin High football program is well aware that it takes size and experience to compete in the Sierra Foothill League, and the Thunder doesn’t have either. Although that may sound a bit like doom and gloom for the 2018 campaign, it is not a new situation for longtime head coach Greg Benzel and his coaching staff. In fact, Benzel said this year’s squad will be exciting, if not dominating. Benzel said he has two linemen returning with experience and they were not necessarily starters last season. “This year, we lack experience and maturity, size and numbers,” Benzel said, with a varsity turnout of less than 50. “We’re going to get ourselves in position and run our feet. And we’re going to run the football because we need to in our league.” The Thunder’s strength this season will be at the skill positions. On offense, Cade Wyant returns at quarterback and Charlie McBride comes back at tight end. Both players played varsity as sophomores and have two years of experience entering their senior year. “(Wyant) maybe ranks up there with one of the best quarterbacks we’ve had; we’ve got Charlie McBride coming back,” Benzel said. “We have strength on the perimeter with our wide receivers, so our strength is going to be making the defense defend the whole field.”

To do that, Benzel and his staff have been working to prepare their offensive line for a more wide-open offense. Damiano Parra and Daniel Roberts return, Roberts being Rocklin’s top receiver in 2017. Parra will likely see extra duty at running back, and he and Roberts will also be called upon to play defense. Benzel said he has depth on the perimeter and will add some wrinkles to the offense to try and keep opposing defenses off guard. The defense will also rely on deception. Benzel said he will change up his front line depending on what the other team brings. “Yes, we’re very excited about running to the football and making plays,” said Benzel. “Our guys are focused on where they fit on defense, and fundamental tackling is always an emphasis.” In the plus column for the Thunder will be special teams. McBride was a backup to Ricky Purvis for place kicking last year, and he and Wyant will both be called upon for punting. Parra and Roberts could well be called upon for returning kicks and punt. “(Special teams) has to be a strength for us,” Benzel said. “It establishes where you start on offense and on defense. I think the kicking game, the return game – we’re excited about it, and we’re going to be pretty good at it.” Although Benzel is a little thin as far as

Half of his varsity squad is made up of juniors, and he hopes not to have to bring up any sophomores if he can help it. “We are trying not to move up a JV player to varsity,” Benzel said, “but we may.” However, Rocklin’s weight room and conditioning programs picked up from where they left off last year. Benzel said Rocklin was one of the best conditioned teams in the SFL last year, and he expects that to be the case against this season. The SFL ranks as one of the strongest leagues in the area, and this year adds Grant and Whitney to the mix. Woodcreek and Nevada Union, teams that had a combined record of 1-11 in 2017, are gone, making the competition even keener. In spite of it, Benzel said there is an air of excitement among his players to exceed expectations. “Our challenge right now is that we’re A GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA PUBLICATION

building the mentality of our guys to play extremely hard and not be intimidated by who we play,” said Benzel. “We’re going to be physical, no matter what. We’ll go out and get it done.” With a couple decades under his belt as head coach, Benzel said he has dealt with line issues before. He and his crew are working extra hard, and if there is a silver lining, his athletes aren’t encumbered with the old way of doing things. He said controlling the line of scrimmage is paramount in football, but the Thunder won’t be doing it the old-fashioned way. He said they have to position block to run the ball and make the necessary adjustments stop their opponents. He said they have to develop ways to keep teams from taking away the line of scrimmage. “There’s an excitement,” he said. “There’s a desire to reload, in a sense. The juniors have to step up; got to go now.”

Head coach JP Dolliver has taken his talents to El Camino High School, but Dolliver’s replacement is a friend and runs a very similar offense to the one Dolliver instilled. Greg Roeszler took over the program around the beginning of the year and has a squad that is about 50-50 when it comes to football experience and novice. However, Roeszler has coached at Encina Prep, West Campus and San Juan and knows what it is to start at ground zero. “JP and I are good friends,” said Roeszler, who played college football at CSU San Diego and briefly wore an Oakland Raiders uniform. “He’s the one who recommended that I interview for the job... What JP left was, first of all, a winning atmosphere because it’s very uncommon that the third year of a school wins more than they lose.” The Wolves went from 0-9 their first year to 7-4 their third year.

Utilizing a spread offense, Western Sierra’s offense made a dramatic turnaround when quarterback Aiden Lucia started calling signals. As a junior last year, Lucia threw for almost 3,000 yards. Twenty-eight aerials went for touchdowns, and he had better than a 106 quarterback rating. He also rushed for 354 yards and scored six TDs. But noticeably missing from WSCA’s lineup will be running back Joe Martinez. As a sophomore, Martinez rolled up 1,028 yards rushing and sprinted into the end zone 20 times. He was just a vote away from being named the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League’s MVP. Martinez name has popped up on the Rocklin High roster, but it was uncertain if had committed to playing there. To help fill Martinez’s vacated shoes, William “Billy” Sokol will be called upon

to the defensive front four, since it will likely be those same offensive players moving over onto defense. Roeszler will be depending a lot on returning linebacker Samson Haefele and junior cornerback Chris Shimp. “Samson will be a very good linebacker for us,” Roeszler said. “Shimp is 6 foot 4 inches and will be a corner as well as a wide receiver for us, and he does a very good job as well.” Another ace in the hole is Chris Delaloye. The junior has played just about every position on the field and played each one well. Although Delaloye is not the biggest guy on the gridiron, he is fearless and a tough competitor. Roeszler said he has not started working on special teams as of yet, and there will not be a junior varsity team again this year. He said he is working on establishing flag

to help. Sokol played primarily on special teams last season, with 27 kickoff returns. Where Roeszler will have his work cut out for him is rebuilding the Academy’s offensive line. Only Daniel Long returns for the O-line. The rest will be made up of freshmen and sophomores. However, Roeszler said having an inexperienced, less physical front line is nothing new for him. What Roeszler has to do is prepare them to function in a wide-open offense. “Not sure it’s easier or harder,” Roeszler said as to the difficulty of blocking for a spread. “What I believe is it is less physical on a young offensive lineman to ask them to pass block and roll protect than it is to just try to power block teams that are more physical and bigger than you.” If Lucia is to be effective this season, he will need his line to catch on quickly. That inexperience will also carry over

football in Western Sierra’s feeder system in hopes of building a JV program in the near future. In spite of limited numbers and players with little or no experience, Roeszler is pleased with his club’s progress and promises Wolves’ games will be enjoyable for the fans. “One thing about these kids is they are very eager to learn and very eager to please you,” Roeszler said. “So they are really right where we had hoped they would be at this point. We’re throwing the ball around, and we will score. Our kids will be exceptionally character-based. They will be classy, and they will represent the school and the community well. “But it’s fun, wide-open football.” The Wolves will open Aug. 17 at Sierra Ridge Academy and return Aug. 24 to host Johnson at Mahaney Park Field in Roseville.

All in. hat’s how three-year varsity offensive lineman Eric Bledsoe would describe this year’s Oakmont football team. Heading into the 2018 season, Oakmont will play in its third different conference in eight years. In 2010, the Vikings moved from the Sierra Foothill League to the Capital Valley Conference, and this past year jumped from the CVC to the Pioneer Valley League. With the new-look conference looming for the Vikings, they will look to have a breakout year. “What we worked on most was working together as a team,” Bledsoe confessed. “On the back of our summer shirts it says, ‘All in. Vikings strong’, so I think everyone on this team is all in with the program and that the goal is to make the playoffs because that hasn’t been done in a long time.” Although many starters departed last year due to graduation,

including starting quarterback Colton Baron, Oakmont still returns a key core of young players who, according to head coach Tim Moore, are hungry to make an impact. “Every year you lose key guys, and that’s the nature of high school football,” Moore said. “We had some pretty special young men in our program last year, but we have a great group of seniors who will lead this year for us.” Oakmont is led by a key group of seniors this year, most of which having two years of varsity experience already under their belt and will enter their third year on the varsity squad. One of those players is the driving force on the offensive side of the ball in Eric Yeager. Yeager played tight end last season for the Vikings and racked up a team-high 323 yards receiving while being second on the team in touchdowns with three. Coming off a season that saw the Vikings go 5-5, just like the previous season, they will look to get over the .500 hump this season. “It has gotten to a point where in the past, 5-5 was good for us, but we have did it twice now in back-to-back years,” Yeager confessed. “I think, however, that is just the bottom, and we have so much more potential. We as a group know how hard we need to work to get to that 11th week.”

Also on the offensive line, another key returner, Stephen Sparks, will be relied on heavily this year in order to help the rushing attack and protect the quarterback, who hasn’t been named yet. Oakmont will see new opponents in league this year. However, some of its preseason schedule will remain the same, including playing Roseville in Week 2, one of Oakmont’s longtime rivals. “We know what to expect from Roseville,” Moore explained. “We have been playing them for over 50 years, so that will definitely be a fun game.” In league, Oakmont will take on longtime SFL opponent Nevada Union, as well as Division V NorCal champions Placer and former CVC foe Ponderosa. “Every week our opponent will be tough in the new league,” Moore said. “It is a grinder, and there is a ton of talent in the league.” The Vikings will start their quest to make the playoffs at home versus El Camino Aug. 17. “El Camino is a team we have either played in a scrimmage or opened up with for the past seven years,” Moore said. “They have a new coaching staff this year, so that will be a new recipe for us opening up the season, and they are looking way different than they used to but we will be ready.”

he baseball field at Valley Christian Academy looks as if it hasn’t seen a ballgame in about 10 years. Orange cones are scattered throughout the outfield, where the grass isn’t mowed. Some weeds are beginning to sprout around home plate and parts of the infield and warning track. Just beyond the third base dugout sits a stationary bike, an array of water jugs and a vintage green flippable chalkboard with the day’s football practice agenda. You read that right:

football practice is underway. With an enrollment of just over 100 students, a roster of about 18, no oncampus football field to call home and a first-year head coach who never played the game, it would seem that the odds are stacked against the Valley Christian Lions. Just don’t tell that to the players. “It’s prideful, to be honest,” says senior and third-year varsity starter John Hibbs of his uniquely charming practice facility. “This is the nicest it’s been,” says senior captain Drake Williams. “Most of the time, this is just dirt and some stickers.” The Lions may not have the ideal practice conditions, but the work and preparation for Friday nights in fall is the same as anyone else in the Sac-Joaquin Section. “A lot of the guys are ready,” says Williams. “Everyone is really into it and wants to give all of their effort this year.” Valley Christian went 2-7 a year ago with a 1-3 mark in the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League. Their lone

league win came against Foresthill, in which the Lions tallied a season-high 42 points as Williams rushed for 226 yards and three touchdowns. The Lions are now under the direction of first-year head coach Doug Williams (Drake’s father), who admittedly never played football growing up. “I know I’ve got some holes,” says Coach Williams, “but I’ve got a great staff that knows what we’ve got and knows what I’m about, and they’re helping me plug in the holes.” Coach Williams has enjoyed the early toughness and unselfishness of his team. He says the biggest strength of the 2018 team is its “grit and openness to want to play both ends.” The Lions play their home games at Highlands High School in North Highlands, which will see its first Valley Christian action Sept. 8 against Turlock Christian.

you play lineman on offense, and then you’ll play DB on defense. It just kinda depends on what your skill set is and how you best fit the team. You’ve just got to be ready for it.” Conditioning is a major part of the daily routine for the Lions. “Going both ways is tough,” says Hibbs. “You have to play the whole season that way, and that’s a big challenge.” Just don’t expect Valley Christian to shy away from any more challenges come midAugust. “I think all the (SMAL) teams are tough competition,” says Coach Williams. “They’re all well-coached. They have more athletes than us. Our athleticism is better than it has been in the past. Hopefully, we can work hard enough to catch them off guard.”

With a roster of just 18, expect most of the Lions to tackle double-duties on offense and defense. Look for junior Bradyn McIntosh to take the Lion’s share of the quarterbacking duties with protection up front from the likes of Brody Williams (Coach Williams’ younger son), Vincent Cusick and Reagan Valenzuela, who will all likely form parts of the defensive line as well. Those looking to haul in passes offensively will also be looking to take them away defensively. Andrew Foster, Pavel Miller and Brady and Erik Meyers are all listed as wide receivers and cornerbacks for the Lions. Drake Williams and Hibbs look to fill the all-purpose rolls while manning the linebacker positions on defense. “You never know what’s going to happen during the game,” says Drake. “Sometimes

They also will return a majority of their offensive line that helped Woodcreek finish second in the SFL last year in total offense for the regular season. Krupp will not be lacking receivers with height this year. Woodcreek’s receiving core is made up of Hudson Habermehl, who stands at 6-foot-8, and Keshawn Bell, who is 6-foot-5. faces, will look to put up big numbers in the new-look conference. “Obviously, around here for us, the bar is set high,” Woodcreek co-head coach Kyle Stowers said. “We have a lot of retuners on both sides of the ball as well as a lot of experience coming back. We played a lot of games in the SFL, so the bar is set high. But for us, we are going to take it one game at a time.” Woodcreek is headlined by senior quarterback Carter Krupp, who also plays defensive back as well as doing the kicking duties for the Timberwolves. Co-head coach Brad Hunkins motivates his linemen on the push sled. a threat on the offensive side of the ball but a leader as well on the defensive end. “Anytime you have big receivers, it is huge,” Stowers said. “It allows you, as a quarterback, to miss a little bit. And for us, as a program, we like having the basketball kids because they can jump and get the ball.” Wilford, who had a breakout sophomore year two years ago, was plagued by injuries last year, which saw him miss significant time. Wilford will once again look to have a big year on both sides of the ball like he did a few seasons ago. Joining a new conference also means new teams. With Antelope the lone team on Woodcreek’s schedule who the Timberwolves faced last season, it will be an adjustment seeing new competition. “When you go against the same teams year in and year out, you have a pretty good understanding of them and what they do on both sides of the ball,” Stowers said. “We have nine new opponents this year, so there will definitely be a learning curve on studying each team. But we will adapt, and our coaches will work hard.” Most notable on Woodcreek’s schedule is a Week 5 matchup between crosstown rival, Roseville. The last team these two squared off

in football in the same league was November of 2013, when Roseville fended off a late Woodcreek comeback to win the battle of the ‘Ville, 38-35. This year will offer a competitive game with both schools poised for a big year. “I definitely think Roseville will be our most exciting game of the season,” Wilford confessed. “(Roseville) has backed out of playing us a few times over the years. I think this game has been waited on for awhile, and I know my whole team is looking forward to playing those guys.” With the new faces the Timberwolves will take on this year, Woodcreek will look to make the postseason for the first time since 2008. “Our goal as a team is we definitely want to make the playoffs,” Wilford confessed. “It is something this school hasn’t done in a long time, and I think, personally and teamwise, that is our biggest goal this year.” Woodcreek’s playoff quest will begin at home Aug. 17 versus Rio Americano. “Rio Americano is a playoff team from last year, and their coach has done a good job in turning that program around,” Stowers confessed. “Rio’s kids play hard, and we’re expecting a tough game starting out, but I think our kids will be ready.”

Granite Bay seniors take the lead Pittsburg in the D-II NorCal final. Despite the NorCal loss, what came from the 2017 postseason run is a bond that drives the 2018 team to have repeated success, Evans said. “People say if you don’t end with a championship, it’s a failed season. I don’t really believe along those lines,” Evans said, who enters his fourth season as the Grizzlies’ head coach. “Our biggest thing as coaches is to see how our guys come together. It really is a tough process. We saw the team come together right at the beginning of the playoffs, so we knew we had a good run ahead of us.”

eadership is hard to come by. But when you combine experience with tradition and accountability, leadership seems to naturally blossom. For head coach Jeff Evans, the biggest asset that his football team carries a year after his Granite Bay Grizzlies were crowned the Division II SacJoaquin Section Champions is the examples set by his group of seniors. Last season, the Grizzlies went 12-3 and captured their sixth overall section title — their first since their 2012 State Championship run — before ultimately falling to

Granite Bay went 4-2 last year in an ever-toughening Sierra Foothill League, which has now added longtime perennial powerhouse Grant from the Delta League and Whitney from the Capital Valley Conference for the 2018 season. This year’s senior class took a group trip to Santa Cruz over the summer to work out and partake in team-bonding activities. Evans said that they went into that trip in clicks but came home as a unit. “The seniors will really be the voice of what we do here,” Evans said. “We coaches, the less we have to yell and scream and correct guys, the more that they can correct each other, the more we get to coach, the better off we are. Some of these guys came in as juniors, kind of wide-eyed, just waiting to be told what to do, to all of a sudden taking the reins. It’s really cool.” Among the returning seniors are a handful of All-Metro players led by defensive tackle Griffin Ruddell, nose guard Bryce Van Order and middle linebacker Jacob Ellis, who Evans says is one of the best players in the entire section. “We know the shoes that we have to fill,” said Ellis, whose 79 tackles were the fifth most among SFL juniors last season. leads a defense that will include Ruddell, Cobe Weeks, Matt Solone, Matthew Fowler, Joe Young, Anthony Martinez and Tannen Vagle, among many others. Offensively, the Grizzlies will be led by senior quarterback TJ Robertson, who got into four games last season behind AllMetro QB Jade Foddrill. “TJ waited patiently (last year),” says Evans. “He was chomping at the bit. He’s a good leader, and he’s gonna have a big season.” Evans says that running backs Anthony Martin and Chase Garmon should also make their names known around the SFL. Both are part of the returning senior class that learned from the likes of last year’s graduating class that included Foddrill, Will Craig, Evan Tattersall, Blake Peterson, Jack Powers and Matt Barron. “We’ve learned work ethic, and it’s all because of those guys,” Van Order said. “We’ve hit the weights harder. We come out to practice harder. More people are showing up. Everybody cares a lot more when we know how far we can go.” Granite Bay begins their 2018 campaign Aug. 17 at home against Monte Vista (Danville) out of the East Bay Conference

A trip to Reno, Nevada, to face Damonte Ranch in Week 2 precedes two more tough assignments — at Jesuit Aug. 31 and at home against Vacaville Sept. 7 — before the gauntlet that is the SFL begins in Week 5 with a Section finals rematch with Del Oro on Sept. 14. “We like having the feeling of not relaxing,” Evans said. “We like being on our toes right now. That little sense of urgency helps us out. “We’ll come be that nameless,

faceless group. We’ll just hide behind that shield. That ‘G’. And then we’re just going to come after people from behind that. Slowly but surely, people will realize the names of the individuals, but the strength of the team will be what separates us.”

arry Cunha has been at the helm as head coach for Roseville High School since 1992, and in the years he has been the man in charge, he has posted some very successful seasons. Two years ago, the Tigers went 9-1, and the only loss during the regular season sustained was to league champ, Antelope. However, last season, the Tigers flipped the switch and ended up on the opposite side of their previous mark going 1-9. “In order to get back where we need to be, you have to remember the tough times and come with the mentality to work every day,” Cunha said. “Our seniors remember how it felt last season, so I think they will make a big impact in the fall. I also think a lot of juniors will be able to make an impact right away.” The Tigers return key seniors from that team and feature a strong junior class from a JV team that captured a 8-2

Quarterback Alex Nicholas will take the snaps for the Tigers in 2018. record last season. “This year’s team is a lot younger than last year’s team,” Roseville linebacker Jordan Susbilla said. “We have a lot of new people who need to step up this year, especially the new junior class.” The man under center for the Tigers this season will be senior Alex Nicholas. Nicholas, who played on the varsity squad last year, started at quarterback and led them to their lone win in 2017 versus Bella Vista. “Our goal is to get better as a team,” Nicholas explained. “We have been just trying to get things done at practice every A GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA PUBLICATION

day with the right amount of focus and effort. Last year, I felt like the effort wasn’t there, but this year it is.” The Tigers will be hungry this year and will have Susbilla running the rock with him being Roseville’s primary back. He will look to have a breakout season after getting experience last year on the varsity level. He will also be relied upon to lead to the defense as one of Roseville’s starting linebackers. “Jordan Susbilla probably flew

under a lot of people’s radar last year, but he was a very good football player for us,” Cunha explained. “(Susbilla) is a complete football player who has the physicality and effort you want to see. He will be a key two-way guy for us.” Roseville, over the years, has produced solid tight ends, including Jimmy Jaggers, who played at UCLA for one season. Roseville features two big tight ends this year in senior Jackson Esparza and junior Tommy Spencer. “I can also see Jackson Esparza contribute for us big time with Alex Nicholas as quarterback,” Cunha added. Roseville will meet some familiar faces in the Capital Valley Conference this season. Most notably will be a renewed league

rivalry with Woodcreek. These two squads haven’t met in football since 2013, so stakes will be high come Week 5. “It is going to be one hell of a game,” Roseville linemen Colten Lieburn said on playing Woodcreek. Roseville will begin their redemption season on the road versus a new opponent in Bear Creek of Stockton Aug. 17. The Tigers in the four previous seasons had opened up versus Chico but wasn’t able to schedule them this season due to the SacJoaquin Section moving up their start date. “(Bear Creek) is a opponent that we don’t know much about,” Cunha said. “We do know they have a very good quarterback as well as receiver. I would expect a talented group out of Stockton.”
