A

fter forming in the mid-60s, The Jacksons, five brothers from Gary, Indiana, became one of the most popular groups in the history of music with charttoppers like “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” and “Can You Feel It.” The spectacular

showmanship continues, with such songs as “I Want You Back,” “ABC” and “I’ll Be There.”

The Jackson 5 made history in 1970 as the first recording act whose first four singles reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

They ultimately scored 17 Top 40 singles. In 1976, the group, except for Jermaine, left Motown

for Epic Records where they added their brother Randy and changed their name to The Jacksons. Five albums between 1976 and 1981 produced the smash hit singles “Enjoy Yourself” and “Where Did Our Love Go.” The Jacksons’ unique brand of soulful pop-funk have made them one of the most beloved musical

acts of all time and reminds guests of the legacy of mega-star Michael Jackson.

ulti-talented funnymen Steve Martin and Martin Short will present new musical sketches, conversations about their iconic careers and their legendary lives in show-business and stand-up on this live stage show. They will be joined by the Grammy Award-winning bluegrass band The Steep Canyon Rangers and renowned jazz pianist Jeff Babko.

Acclaimed talent Steve Martin has earned numerous honors

including an Academy Award, five Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, the Mark Twain Award and the Kennedy Center Honors.

Many of Martin’s films are considered modern classics including, “The Jerk, Planes,” “Trains & Automobiles,” “Roxanne, Parenthood,” “L.A. Story,” and “Father of the Bride.” Martin Short is a beloved comedian and actor whose career spans television, film and theater. City of Palm Springs seeks residents to discuss and help decide districts The City of Palm Springs is currently changing the way its City Council members are elected and shifting from an ‘at large’ system to a ‘by district’ system. One of the most important steps in this process is defining the new districts and deciding if there should be either four or five. The City is asking all residents to participate in the discussion to help decide how it will create these districts.

It needs to know what communities of interest Palm Springs residents would like to be considered. For instance, are there specific social, cultural, ethnic, or economic interests? Should school attendance areas, single-family and multi-family housing unit areas, income levels, or areas around parks or other neighborhood landmarks be considered?

To gather this information,

the City is engaging in extensive community outreach and holding several public hearings in order to ensure residents and other stakeholders – particularly Latinos and others in underserved communities – are informed about and part of the process.

There are many ways people may participate in the districting process. This includes submitting written comments, attending public meetings, or even drafting a proposed district map. To help residents create these maps, the City is providing a variety of map-drawing tools, including paper-only maps, paper maps with a supplemental Microsoft Excel kit and interactive view map, or an online map-drawing tool that enables residents to draw districts just like the professional demographers.

Because the online map-drawing

tool is complex, the city offers a series of short, 90-120 second, training videos, a Quick Start Guide in English and in Spanish, and a OnePage tool reference sheet in English or in Spanish. It is also currently hosting informative workshops about how to use the mapping tool, so any resident will be able to create and submit district map suggestions.

All completed maps must be submitted by September 15, 2018 at palmsprings@NDCresearch.com.

The City’s demographic consultant will generate the population and other demographic details for each proposed map(s).

It is the City’s desire to ensure that the proposed districts reflect prevalent communities of interest and that the citizenry be engaged in this urgent matter. For more information, visit psdistricts.com

Amish Uber Uber, the ubiquitous car service has made its presence known throughout the U.S. Its presence is so pervasive that it prompted an Amish man to start a buggyfor-hire service in St. Joseph, MI, which boasts the sixth largest Amish populations in the U.S., according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC].

Timothy Hochstedler, who started what is believed to be the nation’s first on call horse-drawn taxi service, charges a flat rate of $5.00 per ride. As he described his start up to reporters: “Uber is hot right now, so we have the Amish Uber.”

Problem is that if you want a ride in Hochstedler, you can’t use an app on your smart phone to call

him. His is Amish, after all, and so he adheres strictly to Amish customs. In other words, you’ll have to flag him down if and when you see him.

Recipe of the Week

The Kitchen Diva

SUPERFOODS FOR SUPERHEROS

M

y family and I LOVE Marvel Comics, television shows and movies. Evidently, the comic-book “geek” gene is hereditary, because my husband, daughter and granddaughter all can recite the history of Marvel comicbook heroes. It’s a light-hearted side of my typically serious husband that provides me with a glimpse of what he was like as a little boy.

Recently, we had a great time at the movies seeing the funny, action-packed adventures of “Ant Man and the Wasp.” I had a few unanswered questions about superheroes, so I talked to an authority on all things Marvel Comics, C.B. Cebulski, the new editor-in-chief.

C.B. has been a world-traveler from an early age. He spent his summers as a child visiting relatives in Sweden and Greece. As part of his editorial duties for Marvel Comics, he visits comic-book artists and writers in Asia, Europe and around the U.S. He’s also well-known for his video reviews featuring restaurant dishes that he’s discovered during his travels.

Since I’m also a foodie, I wondered, What do Superheroes like to eat? Fortunately, C.B. has given a lot of thought to my question. The following is a synopsis of our lively conversation and a few of C.B.’s suggestions for “Superfoods” that have been featured in some of our favorite Marvel superheroes movies: IRON MAN/TONY STARK In the Iron Man and Avengers movies, there’s always some memorable dialogue about food. According to C.B., Stark created Iron Man because of his heart condition, so typically he eats a healthy diet.

However, there are a few scenes where Stark delves into unusual

food choices, from eating doughnuts while sitting inside the iconic Randy’s Doughnuts sign to a celebratory visit to a shawarma restaurant with the other Avengers after saving the world.

THOR C.B. explained that Odinson (often called “The Mighty Thor”) is based on the thunder god of Norse mythology, and he has an unbridled appetite. His motto seems to be “eat first, ask questions later.” C.B. would serve Thor hunks of roasted meats, smoked fish and a large turkey drumstick. He also has a fondness for coffee!

BLACK PANTHER In its 1966 debut, Black Panther’s kingdom, the mystical land of Wakanda, was inspired by the people and food of the Congo. Since 2016, award-winning author TeNehia Coates has been writing the storylines for the Black Panther comic and movie. He attributes his inspiration for Wakanda to Ethiopia and its victory over the Italian army and any attempts at colonization. Ethiopian dishes are typically served in the form of a stew with meat and vegetables, and served on top of a large flatbread called “injera,” which is made from a fermented grain called teff.

ANT MAN and THE WASP Scott Lang, aka Ant Man, and his daughter Cassie have a close, playful bond. C.B. thought that pancakes would be the perfect superfood for them. Ants and wasps love sugar, and wasps are attracted to fallen apples. I included those ingredients in my recipe for Ant Man’s Applesauce Pancakes with The Wasp’s Stinger Syrup, a breakfast that both big and little superheroes are sure to enjoy!

ANT MAN’S APPLESAUCE PANCAKES • 2 cups flour, all-purpose or wholewheat white

• 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 2 1/2 tablespoons light brown sugar • 2 eggs • 1 1/2 cups milk, plus more as needed • 2 tablespoon oil • 1/2 cup cinnamon applesauce 1. Mix the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and brown sugar together in a large mixing bowl. Make a “well” or a hole in the center. Add eggs, milk, oil and applesauce to the depression in the center of the flour mixture. Stir with whisk or fork until combined.

If the mixture seems too thick, add a little more milk until thinned out enough.

2. Pour 1/4 cup onto a heated griddle or large, heavy skillet. When bubbles form on the pancake, flip over and cook other side until golden brown. Serve with The Wasp Stinger Syrup recipe below. Makes about 2 dozen pancakes.

THE WASP’S STINGER SYRUP The warm spices in this recipe add a little “sting” that keeps the syrup from being overly sweet while

enhancing the cinnamon flavor.

• 1/2 cup white sugar • 1/2 cup light brown sugar • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1 cup water 1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, vanilla and water.

Bring mixture to a boil on mediumhigh heat, stirring often. Continue to boil and stir until mixture thickens to syrup consistency.

2. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Pour syrup over applesauce pancake. Serve immediately.

• Clean your air ducts in one fell swoop by removing the grates and lining them up on a sheet outside.

I use my driveway, but you could use a deck or patio. Lay the sheet flat, then line the grates up. Scrub with a brush and soapy water, then use a hose to rinse. The sheet keeps ground dirt off the grates, and the water goes right through the sheet.
