rammy-award winning performer Peter Frampton became a success at the young age of 16, when he co-founded one of rock ‘n’ roll’s first supergroups, the seminal rock act Humble Pie, followed by The Herd. While well known for his session work and collaborations with such legendary artists as George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, John Entwistle and many others, he’s most famous for his fifth solo album, the electrifying “Frampton Comes Alive!,” which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and remains one of the top-selling live records of all time.

His latest album, released in 2015, is called “Acoustic Classics” and features stripped down versions of his

classic hits, including “Baby, I Love Your Way,” “Lines On My Face,” “Do You Feel Like I Do,” “Show Me The Way” and more. He remains well known for tunes like “Breaking All the Rules” and “I’m in You,” which are staples on classic rock radio.

Additionally, Frampton has reissued his critically lauded album “Fingerprints” via his own imprint Phenix Phonograph. Originally released in 2006, “Fingerprints” won the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. Frampton’s cover of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” off the album was also nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

In 2013 he performed throughout North America as part of the “Frampton’s Guitar Circus” tour which

featured periodic guest performers including B.B. King, Robert Cray, Don Felder, Rick Derringer, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Steve Lukather, Sonny Landreth, David Hidalgo, Mike McCready, Roger McGuinn and Vinnie Moore. In 2014, Frampton participated in “The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles” tribute on the 50th anniversary of their first appearance on American television. He was also inducted into the Musicians’ Hall of Fame and has appeared as himself in the television shows “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.” This Brit who now lives in Nashville is one of the most celebrated guitar artists ever, and his show happily gives audiences a chance to be part of rock history.

ime to tune in for this threeday event that will feature more than two-dozen bands on the breathtaking 205-acre Idyllwild Arts mountain campus among the pines, under the festival’s signature colored parachutes. All proceeds benefit Idyllwild Arts, a non-profit that changes lives through the transformative power of art.

The festival features plenty of jazz, blues and R&B, including young artists and seasoned musicians like event co-founder Marshall Hawkins, the standup-bass master who learned at the knees of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams

while touring with the Miles Davis Quintet. Hawkins personally curates this entire festival. Guests will also hear the Pete Escovedo Orchestra, the Graham Dechter Quartet, Joshua White, Richie Cole “Alto Madness,” the Azar Lawrence Experience and American Idol star Casey Abrams.

Sunday will feature student performers from the Idyllwild Arts Academy.

hildren’s Discovery Museum of the Desert (CDMOD) is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, making it clear why it’s become known as a community treasure for kids and families. With ongoing exhibits and interactive activities that develop kids’ brainpower and confidence, CDMOD encourages kids to learn about the world around them.

During the month of August, children are invited to put on a hard hat to “work” in a construction site, where they can let their creativity run wild as they explore basic building concepts related to engineering, math, art, science and more. The

Born to Build: Engineering Creativity exhibit features 14 LEGO creations and thousands of possible configurations.

Other fun and educational sessions include the MakerSpace Programs and Art Workshops where kids can further test their ingenuity. On August 15, after 5 p.m., the Museum will host “Little Bits,” an event sponsored by Southern California Edison that provides valuable STEM experience so that little minds become big ($5 per child). The Museum is a perfect escape from the summer heat for kids of all ages, along with their families and teachers.

Event celebrates microbrewers, hop heads and beer lovers

he seventh annual Craft Beer Weekend will be held on Saturday, August 4, and Sunday, August 5, at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club. The weekend celebrates the microbrewers, hop heads, cask masters and maltsters who make the world a better place for beer lovers.

Taste the day away from noon to 5 p.m. in the Commune on Saturday, with over four dozen breweries. The breweries attending include 21st Amendment, Bell’s Brewery Inc., Claremont Craft Ales, Coachella Valley Brewing Co., Coronado Brewing, Figueroa Mountain,

Funkwerks, Karl Strauss Brewing Co., Kern River Brewing Co., La Quinta Brewing Co., Lagunitas Brewing Co., Mason Ale Works, Maui Brewing Co., Mikkeller, New Belgium Brewing Co., Pizza Port, Saint Archer Brewing and Thorn Brewing Co. Small bites, live entertainment and tales of the trade regaled by the brewers themselves top off the evening.

Beer brunch will be served on Sunday, starting promptly at 11 a.m. in the Commune. Six beer-inspired courses will each be paired with a different brew, plus one beer to start and one to finish.

Saturday’s Craft Beer Festival tickets are $35, Sunday brunch is $55. Festival and brunch combo tickets are $70. The event will be held at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club, 701 East Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. Must be 21 to attend events.

ome summer, locals may appreciate the art of imbibing more often. At La Brasserie Bistro & Bar, you will discover an extensive bar menu that’s worthy of attention. To be sure, there are far too many notables to list here, but the one thing this popular local hotspot continues to do so very right is treat its customers like royalty and offer food and drink that matches. So, because it’s summertime, let’s begin with the bar side of things here and merge into the Bistro in a second, shall we?

For starters, take note: Happy Hour runs 4-6 p.m. here. We recommend some of the following drinks, which certainly satisfied our palate.

Nothing might compare to La Brassiere’s exquisite grand Paris Manhattan, which delivers–big time—with Bastille Whisky, Grand Marnier, Bitters Sweet Vermouth, and orange juice. Have two—but grab an Uber (or friend) for a ride home. Divine.

The Grape Martini is topped with Cremant D’Alsace and leaves an impact. Clearly another winner.

Consider the blood orange Cosmo— orange vodka, blood orange liquor,

cranberry and orange juice—for a refreshing reprieve from the summer heat. And La Brassiere Bistro & Bar’s French 75 is downright unique with gin, lemon juice and orange blue agave—it’s topped with Cremant D’Alsace and if there’s a secret to way the bartender prepares this gem, I assure you, that secret will not be revealed. Also noteworthy: The fine selection of French wines.

Thirsts quenched and emotions soothed, we move onto this portal’s very extensive menu. Daily fresh soups compete for attention with an appetizing and freshly prepared French onion soup (with cave-aged gruyere cheese). The appetizer list here is diverse—everything from steak tartare, escargot, cured salmon “gravlax,” and grilled octopus and stuffed calamari. Entrée salads are also farm fresh and plentiful, and the entrees themselves are presented with homecooked warmth and appeal—straight from the heart and soul of their chef.

For instance, the grilled salmon with tricolor quinoa arrives with quinoa mixed with avocado, mango, pineapple, tomatoes and—wait

for it!—passion fruit emulsion and grilled-peppered onion rings. What a meal. The herb marinated New Zealand lamb chop delivers bulgur tabbouleh with green chickpeas, date and apricot tagine, along with lamb au jus. Quite memorable. The vegetarian option—sautéed artichoke and mascarpone ravioli “au thym”—provides sweet pea purée and heirloom tomato salsa to boot.

In the meantime, for a traditional French brasserie restaurant, this unique haven thrives thanks, in part, to how well it remains committed to serving farm-fresh seasonal fare catering to, as they put it, “the discerning palate of the modern connoisseur.” The menu is glorious blend of both French and California cuisine and the desserts, prepared

by Emmanuel Janin, the award-winning French chef and owner, clearly leaves an indelible impact. (Chef Vincent is also in the kitchen.) This is a bona fide French oasis in the desert.

he season begets lounging and a chill vibe. You can have both here. Palm Springs’ popular go-to, especially during the summer months, wins points for how many specials it offers its patrons—everything from a Sunday Brew with $5 pints to karaoke in the nearby Amigo Room. Breakfasts are sublime in this cozy diner. Go light with a date shake. Or indulge your appetite with avocado toast or King’s signature breakfast sandwich (over a hard egg, American cheese, home fries, succulent sausage links, thyme mayo, and a brioche bun).

Appetizers such as devils on horse-

back (clever name, folks!) finds bacon wrapped dates wonderfully stuffed with sliced smoked almonds over ricotta cheese, and dressed with arugula. Gorgeous. Tacos are a bigticket item later in the day and the shiitake machaca tacos impress with shiitake mushrooms and pumpkin seed hummus—wow!—comfit radish, tomato, red onion, red sprouts, and serrano lime. Entrees like pan roasted salmon or steak frites should satisfy any hunger pangs. Burgers?

Plenty. But the best thing here may just be the atmosphere. If ever there was a place that seemed timeless and fun, this is it.

ure, we appreciate all the visitors that roll through Coachella Valley, but if we’re really honest, we do love a reprieve from the crowds, too. It gives us time to revisit our favorite haunts. Mimmo’s is one of them. Truth is: We feel at home at Mimmo’s. It’s hard to go wrong with the delicious insalata caprese—this has to be one of the few establishments around that makes these dreamy tomato slices with plump mozzarella with basil leaves so mouthwatering. Daily soup specials and Mimmo’s luscious grilled polenta stand out for the beginning

of your food journey here. Main entrees, such as spaghetti o penne pomodoro e basilico is very popular, but meat lovers will appreciate the time and care found in the recipe for the veal ravioli—divine. Meatless wonders abound, too. There is also a nice variety of fish entrees (salmon and sole stand out) and the veal chop parmigiana is a rare beauty to behold. Try the tiramisu for dessert, but don’t hold back: the Sicilian cannoli here is calling your name and you know it. Big fun fact: Check out Mimmo’s website and click on the Food Cam link. Inventive!

Native Foods Café satisfies the former in spades. As one the area’s more robust health/vegan outposts, there’s no shortage of variety and few establishments offer such a bountiful array of healthy options. vegan burgers here are gorgeously prepared—choose a side of glutenfree fries to top it off and you’re set for an entire afternoon. But there’s a great deal of diversity to celebrate here, too. Bulogi kimchi tacos are a rare Korean-inspired gem with

a savory barbecue sauce to boot.

The Buddha bowl remains a favorite—teriyaki sweet potatoes, fanned avocado, mushroom chips, corn, sprouts and jasmine rice accentuated with cilantro make it heavenly.

Another bountiful gem is the orange cauliflower, with its crisp texture and Chinese-infused tasteful blessings—it sits on a lovely bed or brown rice, veggies and tofu. Fresh salads and wonderfully prepared soups color the menu, making this hotspot ideal for a healthy food romp. And yes, there is kombucha!

oger Daltrey’s still got it, and then some. This Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and founder of the iconic rock band The Who has announced a new solo album entitled “As Long As I Have You,” his first in 26 years, which he will showcase live on his 2018 summer show tour. Daltrey will be joined on stage at Fantasy Springs by current The Who band members Simon Townshend, Jon Button, Scott Devours, Loren Gold and Frank Simes, and it’s a sure bet that they will perform The Who hits, rarities and songs from this new album as well as previous discs.

This larger-than-life British music man has sold over 100 million records including nine U.S. and 10

U.K. top ten albums and 14 U.K. top ten singles. He’s played well over 2,000 gigs in a career spanning over 50 years including venues such as Woodstock, Monterey Pop, Desert Trip, Shea Stadium, The Super Bowl halftime show and Live Aid to name but a very few.

Daltrey’s appearances in over 30 feature films include early starring roles in “Tommy,” “Lisztomania,” “The Legacy,” and “McVicar.”

Through the 1980s and 1990s, he appeared in various musicals and dramas, including “The Beggar’s Opera,” “The Comedy of Errors,” “The Little Match Girl,” “Mack the Knife” and “Buddy’s Song.” His television work includes “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “That 70’s Show,”

“Rude Awakening” and many others. And, of course, true fans know that The Who tunes, marked with Daltrey’s trademark pipes, serve as the theme songs for all four shows in the “CSI” series family.

Daltrey has raised tens of millions of dollars for global charity and was awarded a Commander of the British Empire for his work with The Teenage Cancer Trust. He is in the UK Music Hall of Fame and has lifetime achievement awards from The BRIT Awards and from The Grammys.

With this latest show, Daltrey demonstrates why he continues to be known as one of rock music’s most charismatic frontmen and famed for his powerful voice and energetic stage presence.

fter forming in the mid-60s, The Jacksons, five brothers from Gary, Indiana, became one of the most popular groups in the history of music with chart-toppers like “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” and “Can You Feel It.” The spectacular showmanship continues, with such songs as “I Want You Back,” “ABC” and “I’ll Be There.”

The Jackson 5 made history in 1970 as the first recording act whose first four singles reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. They ultimately scored 17 Top 40 singles. In 1976, the group,

except for Jermaine, left Motown for Epic Records where they added their brother Randy and changed their name to The Jacksons. Five albums between 1976 and 1981 produced the smash hit singles “Enjoy Yourself” and “Where Did Our Love Go.” The Jacksons’ unique brand of soulful pop-funk have made them one of the most beloved musical acts of all time and reminds guests of the legacy of mega-star Michael Jackson.

The show is especially timely with the recent passing of the group’s patriarch, Joe Jackson.

Fantasy Springs Resort Casino has everyone covered (and no cover charge) with their ongoing series of free rock concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings. Top quality tribute bands pay homage to (and sound just like) rock ‘n’ roll favorites, like The Eagles, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Matchbox 20, ZZ Top, Metallica, Santana, Rush, Guns ‘N Roses, Rolling Stones and numerous others.

Many diehards swear it’s the desert’s version of The Roxy and The Whisky A Go Go, without having to fight the frenzy on L.A.’s Sunset Strip.

Guests can settle in on the open air concert patio, an amphitheater-style area featuring two side-by-side stages holding audiences of up to 3,000.

The Rock Yard runs from spring to fall and is always live, always free and always outdoors. Different beer and

• Brian Stanton’s award-winning, critically acclaimed one-man play, “Blank,” explores adoption and identity. Playing 12 characters, adoptee Stanton embarks on a quest for identity, ultimately discovering the horrific truth of his birth, an instinctive love for his birth mother, and a grateful dedication to his adoptive family. High Desert’s ‘Harvey’

Desert Ensemble Theatre Company’s New Season

Desert Ensemble Theatre Company (DETC) has announced its 20182019 season and a change at the top, with the retirement of Founder and Producing/Artistic Director Emeritus Tony Padilla and Artistic Director Emeritus Rosemary Mallett.

zech sculptor David Cerny seems to cause controversy with each project he creates.

And the temporary (it will be there less than two years) exhibit of ten naked babies currently occupying a large hole in the ground in downtown Palm Springs is no exception.

“Babies” is one of Cerny’s bestknown multi-pieces, first presented in 1994 at the Chicago Museum of Modern Art. The exhibit features ten large fiberglass and steel naked babies with a barcode replacing their faces, a statement reflecting Cerny’s concern about the dehumanization of society.

“People will either love them or hate them. Cerny is known to stir controversy and his installations are never mediocre. In any case this will add an international touch to the

downtown development and draw interest to the otherwise empty space,” says Christian Hohmann of Hohman Fine Art, who represents the artist and organized the project.

Michael Braun of Grit Development, the downtown project developer, was intrigued by Cerny’s work and funded the logistics of the project, which included shipping them in two 40-foot containers to Los Angeles, trucking them to Palm Springs and installing them in the sunken empty lot behind The Rowan by crane (it takes four to five strong people to carry one of them).

The installation site of the “Babies” is the future location of a residential building that will be developed in 2020/21.

A casual glance at the exhibit draws a variety of reactions. Unless

one is aware of the artist’s intentions, it is easy to find them disgusting or, at least, strange. Perhaps if there were a couple descriptive plaques placed near the exhibit, viewers would at least understand the artist’s intent.

“I just don’t get it” is one common reaction. “Can’t they at least put diapers on those babies” is another.

Cerny is 50 years old and is still very active in his home country.

And, if you think this installation is controversial, Google him and take a look at some of his other creations, many of which are not fit for description in a family publication.
