AUBURN’S FOOD TRUCK FIESTA RETURNS

A

parade of food trucks will pull up to Auburn’s Recreation Park for the Food Truck Fiesta.

Not only will there be around 15 different trucks offering everything from chicken tacos to curry bowls, there will be music, a beer garden serving up local brews, a wine bar and a “giant” kid zone.

Last year around 1,000 attended the event.

Sheryl Petersen, recreation services manager for Auburn Recreation District, attributes the success of the event to its convenience and the hearty appetite of the Auburn area.

“Everyone likes to eat, some people like to cook, nobody likes to do dishes!” Peterson said.

There will also be vendor booths offering demonstrations and exhibitions to attendees.

Some seating will be available but guests can bring their own lawn chairs and blankets to sit in the park’s grass and enjoy their dinner in the shade.

Peterson said she likes seeing the community come to the event and enjoy themselves.

“Love that people who come to the event have such a great time,” she said.

This event is a fundraiser for the Auburn Bike Park. Purchases at the food trucks and vendors will support the facility.

A common response to those who have attended say, “Great event, can we have more of these? Love the music,” Peterson said.

Auburn Body Shop Celebrates 54 Years Local Service!

Howard Davidson was 25 when he and his friend Ralph Smith shook hands and together they opened Auburn Body Shop in July of 1964. Davidson and wife Peggy bought out Smith in 1971 and now they are celebrating 54 years under continuous local ownership in the same location.

The Davidson family is proud to be a part of the Auburn community.

“We work here, we’ve raised our families here and we have been given the opportunity to serve in the community to help make Auburn a better place,” Howard Davidson said. “My son, Dave Davidson, is my partner, providing leadership, quality control and exceptional customer service to each of our customers.

Dave’s son, my grandson Ron Davidson, is currently spraying out our beautiful paint jobs in our refinish department and my granddaughter Sara is our customer service consultant. Brett Lewis came on board with us last year and is our main estimator bringing with him skills in estimating, customer service, production management and parts management.”

Howard Davidson is a long-time member of the local Elks Lodge, Past President of the Auburn Jeep Club and past President of the Auburn/Grass Valley Chapter of California Auto Body Association. Dave is also past President of the Auburn Jeep Club and is Past President of the Auburn 20/30 Club. When Dave is not at the body shop he enjoys playing golf and being in the outdoors.

The automotive world has changed a great deal since the doors of the body shop opened in 1964. “We have always done great work ... but like everything else, things were much simpler back then,” Davidson said.

Today, Auburn Body Shop is an advanced, modern automotive collision repair center with new equipment and experienced automotive collision repair experts. Additionally, Davidson points out, “Collision

Olive Oil: fast, simple, organic NEWCASTLE IS HOME TO OLIVE TREES

heck the label. A bottle of extra virgin olive oil should have one ingredient — extra virgin olive oil. The name means it was pressed without chemicals.

“That’s the unique thing about extra virgin olive oil — you make it within an hour,” said Dewey Lucero, owner of Wild Groves in Newcastle. “That day, you put it into a container and it is ready to go as is. We are extracting the juice from the olive. That’s what makes it so good for you. We don’t change anything. We don’t add or take away anything except for in the flavored oils.”

Lucero’s family has been in the olive business for three generations on his father’s side and four on his mother’s.

The family’s focus was table olives. But when it was his turn, Dewey Lucero took it in a different direction — his specialty is olive oil.

“I’ve helped pioneer it (in California) for the past 13 years,” he said.

He has a few trees in Newcastle, but the majority of his orchards are in Tehama and Yolo counties. Olive trees grow at lower elevations and don’t do as well in chillier temperatures, he explained.

Growers in California produce about 50 varieties of olives. One of the most common is the Arbequina, which originated in Spain. Other major varieties are the Mission, Ascolano and Manzanillo The taste of the oil differs with each variety.

“If you tasted them all, they would all taste different,” Lucero said.

He works a lot with Arbequina as well as the Ascolano variety “(The Ascolano) is a Tuscan varietal and is a very unique tasting oil,” he said.

In fact, what started as a potential hurdle has become his biggest award winner.

“The family planted (the Ascolano variety) because the canneries asked for it for table olives about 30 or 35

years ago,” he said. “But the canneries found out the olives bruised too easily and people didn’t buy the jars of them because of the bruises. So they stopped using them after five years or so.”

When Lucero decided to crush them for olive oil, he was delighted with the results.

“It became very popular and judges like it, too,” he said. “This year we won best of show in Napa and several best of classes with that olive oil.”

Although the end product is kept to its simplest form, the journey from tree to bottle include some crucial steps.

The trees bloom in May, producing fruit that grows through the summer.

“In September is when you see (the fruit) harvested for table olives,” Lucero explained. “Early October is when we start to harvest them for oil.

The olives are little more mature. Riper olives have more oil content.”

Timing is important.

“You can’t let an olive stay too long on the tree,” he said. “Oil content would be high but the quality would suffer.

You have to know what you are doing.”

Typically, the harvest continues until December.

“Olives are a very intensive fruit to harvest,” he said.

If the fruit is hand-harvested, it has to be done on ladders. If it is mechanically harvested, the ground must be flat.

“All olives start green,” Lucero said.

“As they mature, they turn reddish, to purple and then black. Black is the most mature.”

That’s not to be confused with the black olives on store shelves.

“Those are turned black on purpose by a process. All table olives have to be picked green,” he said.

Agricultural modes have evolved over the years. Olive orchards of the past would have as few as 40 large trees per acre. Now, with the smaller Arbequina, there are 700 trees an acre. Olive trees are known for their longevity.

“One of oldest olive trees in the world is 3,000 years old and is still producing olives,” he said. “It is in the Middle East.”

When purchasing olive oil it’s important to know how to recognize a quality product.

“Anyone can slap a label on the bottle,” Lucero said. “That’s been the biggest issue. A UC Davis study about 10 years ago found that almost 70 percent of the olive oil on shelves in the U.S. was not what it said it was.

Mostly it was because it was adulterated with other oils or made with inferior oils. Other times it was old oil.”

His advice is to look for the California Olive Oil Council seal.

“That’s super important,” he said.

“That means it was sent to a lab and meets extra virgin standards. It was also tasted by a professional tasters. ...

There are things you can taste that a lab can’t test for.”

And make sure the label says coldpressed extra virgin.

“Cold pressed is really important,” he said. “If heat is used in processing, it will damage the oil.”

Olive oil should be in a dark bottle to protect it from light and stored properly.

“One of big (mistakes) people make is putting the olive oil right by the cooktop,” he said. “You don’t want the oil getting hot. You want it to be at room temperature or cooler. Don’t put it in the fridge either. Store it in a cool place away from light.”

A good olive oil will last two years.

Once you open the bottle, you have about eight months of good flavor.

“What happens after that is the oil goes rancid,” he said. “It is still edible and won’t hurt you. It just doesn’t taste good.”

At Wild Groves, Lucero produces close to 5,000 gallons of olive oil a year.

It is available on the company website, at Newcastle Produce in Newcastle and as a private label at Nugget Markets.

“I also ship all over the United States,” he said. “Some of my biggest customers are in New York and Illinois.

We are the most awarded California olive oil. We are the No. 1 olive oil in California right now.”

He attributes that success to time and experience in the industry.

“Family members have educated me on when to pick (the fruit) and how to care for trees,” he said. “The second part of that is me tasting. I am one of best blenders and tasters out there. I don’t think many people work as hard as I do.

I taste everything and I blend accordingly. I know what customers want.”

Beyond the traditional extra virgin olive oil, Wild Groves also creates flavored olive oils — among them, mandarin crushed, toasted garlic, Meyer lemon, basil and garlic jalapeno.

The company also produces balsamic vinegars.

“We do a mandarin balsamic, which is just delicious,” he said. “And there are some fun ones — watermelon, pear, blackberry, raspberry and lemon.”

Lucero’s passion for the olive industry goes beyond family roots.

“People underestimate the health benefits,” he said. “What makes it so healthy is antioxidants. It is a natural product that is fairly inexpensive that helps you live longer. My biggest thing is go out and find a local producer you like and experiment with different flavors.”

Prior to moving to Newcastle, Lucero and his wife, Katie, lived in Rocklin.

They are both Cal Poly graduates. He has a degree in mechanical engineering and she has a degree in math.

“We said, whoever gets a job first, that’s where we are going,” he said.

“She got a job first, teaching match at Sierra College. I worked a year in engineering and then got laid off. That’s when I started in olive oil.”

His future plans include opening a tasting room.

Mixed olive tapenade A TASTE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

L

ast summer, my husband and I celebrated our one-year anniversary with a trip to Europe. We spent months planning out our train rides on the Eurail, Airbnbs in different countries, museums of Van Gough and world history, and restaurants in each city.

In Spain, we explored Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Malaga and Granada. After a long and hot train and then bus ride to Granada, we found our Airbnb on the third floor of a building just off Calle Gran Via de Colon on Calle Sta. Lucia.

It was about 5 p.m., early for dinner, but we had been traveling since 10 a.m. with only some stale bread and bits of cheese and we were hungry. We dropped our bags in the room, quickly checked out or cool, Spanish-style space, and braced ourselves for the subtropical heat. The streets were stone-laid and caked with dirt, and the ancient buildings looming over us on each side seemed to be guardians of another time looking down on us, two hungry travelers.

As we were walking, we stumbled upon a rustic tavern with a sign above its door that said “Tapas.� We stepped inside. The restaurant

MIXED OLIVE TAPENADE Ingredients 8 oz jar kalamata olives, pitted and drained of half the brine 8 oz black olives, pitted and drained ¼ cup sundried tomatoes ¼ cup chopped parsley

5 cloves garlic 2 tbsp capers 1 tbsp olive oil Pinch of rosemary 1 lemon slice, squeezed

Directions 1. Place all ingredients, with the exception of crostini, bread or crackers, in a blender or food processor and blend until almost smooth.

2. Serve in a small bowl with crostini, bread or crackers.

3. Refrigerate for up to two weeks.

was completely empty and the bartenders looked surprised to see us. They waved in a gesture of “sit anywhere” and we did, although we were wondering why no one else was dining here. What we discovered soon after is that “dinner time” in Spain is much, much later than 5 p.m. Since it’s the hottest part of the day, most Spaniards are at home resting or napping during this time. In any case, there we were, getting tapas with personalized service in a pub in Spain.

In Granada, and most places in Spain, tapas — small snacks of bread, meats, fruits or cheeses — are complimentary with any drink order. My husband ordered a ‘cerveza” and I a sangria. Our drinks came with several slices of bread and an olive tapenade. I had never had tapenade before, and was nervous because it didn’t look particularly appetizing. But when in Spain! I cautiously dipped the corner of the crusty bread into the dark mush and… it was delicious.

Originally from the south of France, tapenade is an olive based dish usually with anchovies or vinegar, capers and herbs. In my recipe, I didn’t use anchovies, but included some of the brine from the kalamata olives to replace the vinegary flavor.

The rosemary adds just the right touch of savory flavor, and the squeeze of lemon gives it a fresh taste. Tapenade can be served as an appetizer or tapa, or with the main dish. This mixed olive tapenade pairs well with fish such as halibut or tilapia.

If you find the flavor of kalamata olives to be too strong, try adding more black olives to the mix and blend again. This should reduce the abrasive kalamata taste, without losing the traditional tangy nature of the mixture.

This recipe is simple, quick and the perfect addition to a light summer meal. It can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to two weeks. With leftovers, the tapenade can be used as a spread on sandwiches or with toast and cheese. It’s also a nice replacement for hummus if you want to try something different. This may go without saying, but a chilled glass of sangria or Spanish-style beer is also an excellent addition to go alongside this European dish.

or the majority of kids across the county, it’s back to school time.

It’s hard to miss, with sales and shopping shifting into high gear for the upcoming academic year.

For some families in Placer County, however, there’s no money for a back to school shopping spree or even for regular meals.

Thankfully, the need has not gone unnoticed.

School supplies Assistance League Greater Placer will provide backpacks to more than 250 students and supply kits (cardboard cases with things such as paper, pencils, pens, erasers, glue sticks, rulers and notebooks) to about 400 students in grades kindergarten to 12th.

“For this next fiscal year 2018-19, we are finding a greater need for the school supply kits and we anticipate giving out at least 400 kits. We will need to purchase more than we have in the past,” said Linda Arlen, chairman of the Backpacks/School Supplies Program and April Shiro, VP philanthropic programs at Assistance League.

As school funding declines, teachers are asking parents to provide more and more school supplies. This impacts families who are not able to afford the extra expense. But, with the help of the Assistance League, students in low-income families can avoid going without.

“Last year, seeing the joy on the faces of the children when they selected their backpack and picked up their own school supply kit was just so rewarding,” Arlen and Shiro said. “The parents and the children never hesitate to give you a great big hug of appreciation.”

In order for a student to take part of this program, they’ll need a referral through KidsFirst in Auburn or Roseville, the Resource Center at Kings Beach and other schools throughout Placer County.

“We do not provide these items by direct request from families. They must first show need through these agencies or schools,” Arlen and Shiro explained.

The program started in 1992 and the organization has given out thousands of backpacks since then. In the last five years, more than 1,400 backpacks have been given to students in need.

“When the children arrive to choose the backpacks they desire and are given a box of school supplies,” said Committee Chairman Marysue Tiffany of the Assistance League. “The expressions on their faces, especially the kindergartners, first-, second- and third-graders are priceless. Those faces make us volunteer to do this every year. It is so worthwhile.”

Meals For families struggling to feed themselves, Placer Food Bank can help.

Schools already offer students free lunches, but what about the weekend when the kids are out of school?

A backpack program by the Placer Food Bank provides elementary students with bags of food to take home on Fridays. Diana Yruegas, community engagement and marketing manager for Placer Food Bank, estimates about 900 packages are sent to Auburn, Western Placer and Roseville school districts each week. Inside the packages are low-prep foods like ravioli cups and breakfast bars.

“We make sure they are foods that (children) want to eat and are able to prepare,” Yruegas said.

The food bags are available to all students. There is no applications or qualifying for the program. This also may save the child from feeling set apart from others.

“Because it is presented to all the children at these schools, it’s up to them if they want to partake,“ Yruegas said.

“Everyone is partaking” so it doesn’t draw attention to a handful of students who may be in low-income families.

And then the Food Bank takes this a step further.

Taking note that there may be preschoolers, high schoolers or others in the home who may be hungry, on the third and fourth Friday of the month, the food bags will contain non-perishable food items such as, dry beans and pasta.

“We know things get tighter at the the end of the month,” Yruegas said.

“So the first two (Fridays, it’s for the students) and the third and fourth are for the family.”

The school pantry will provide 120,000 meals or 320,000 pounds of food to area families this year, Yruegas said.

When school is in or out, Placer County families are invited to a free farmers’ market year around. Currently, there are two: Rocklin and Lincoln.

The food is free for anyone who comes and the events are set up “to make it as much as a community feel as possible so folks don’t have that stigma.”

Fresh produce is purchased in season from local farmers at discounted rates.

“Six to 8 to 12,000 pounds (of produce), it’s a variety of items like fresh carrots and cabbage potatoes and watermelon,” Yruegas said. “We try to get items that are in season and we can get a good deal on and good staples that we can build good meals off of.”

Along with the fresh produce at these farmers’ markets, there are free for the taking, staples, such as, spaghetti, pasta sauce, canned fruit and mac and cheese.

“On average in Rocklin, 300-plus families (will come to the farmers’ market) and for the Lincoln farmers’ market, we’re averaging about 170 families. This last one was 230 families,” Yruegas said.

Breaking the cycle of homelessness ACRES OF HOPE GETS WOMEN WITH CHILDREN BACK ON THEIR FEET STORY AND PHOTOS BY PAIGE SMITH

S

eated in her office, Lisa Risdal’s passion for Acres of Hope is immediately recognized as something much more than a job or a passion to help others. Risdal is the executive director of Acres of Hope, based in Auburn is a spiritually based renewal center serving homeless women with children in the Sierra Foothills.

“It is not about me at all, that is one of the things you learn here really quick,” Risdal explained. “The passion and the things that we see happen all of the time, that is the motivator that we draw our energy and enthusiasm from, because we see it up close and personal.”

Risdal and the staff have seen it on the faces of a little kid that doesn’t trust them and then two months later they want a hug before they would leave for the day. Risdal adds that she has seen it on a woman who comes in who has been beat down forever and you see them hardened

and skeptical, not welcoming or very trusting at all and over the months you can see them physically change and you see their faces change over time.

“It is an amazing process to watch and watch a transformation not on just the outside but also the glow, the glow that they have,” Risdal added.

This program is tailored for women with young children to help them get on their feet and become successful so the cycle is not repeated. The women who are in the program can learn and grow. One analogy Risdal provides are wounds and bandages.

“Our society is equipped to throw bandages at these folks in order to help them meet their immediate need just dealing with the things on the surface; but it isn’t going to take care of what is causing that wound,” Risdal explained. “Acres of Hope allows women and children to stay there

Their program helps these women look at the deeper issues within that has caused this wound and behavior and help them overcome the obstacles.

When a new family arrives, they are provided with a cottage that includes a bathroom, living area and a small kitchen space for basic needs. All main cooking is done in the main area so there are no accidents and the women can learn to cook.

From there, the Acres of Hope team works with the women through basics and has volunteers come in to teach the women how to do different things such as budgeting or meal preparation to be successful on their own.

“Homelessness is not the issue, homelessness is just one of the myriad results of those destructive behaviors, including damaged relationships, criminal records, credit records,” Risdal said. “Unless you can step out of survival mode and focus on those things, and heal from the inside out, you are never going to break that cycle.”

Risdal and the team at Acres of Hope are continuing to work determinedly to help as many women and children as possible to help break the cycle of

homelessness and are running on what resources they have and what is donated. All proceeds at the ReNew Stores in Roseville goes to Acres of Hope.

There are many opportunities to volunteer at Acres of Hope whether it is working in the children’s programs, property and grounds or in the office, communications or fundraising.

Colfax Indian Day BRINGING NATIVE AND NON-NATIVE COMMUNITIES TOGETHER

ulture, history and tradition will meet head-on for a Native American-themed bash in Colfax.

The United Auburn Indian Community will host the free, first annual Colfax Indian Day to bring native and non-native communities together Aug. 25 at the Sierra Vista Community Center.

Native communities, community supporters and tribal affiliations all came together to plan the event and bring in vendors, artisans and traditional dancers.

Clyde Prout, tribal chairman of Colfax-Todds Valley consolidated tribe of the Colfax Rancheria, said the goal of the event is to bring together the native and non-native people in the community and educate everyone about the Nisenan Maidu and Miwok people of the Colfax area.

The Nisenan Maidu and Miwok people make up the Colfax-Todds Valley tribe. Many live in Colfax, however they are found all throughout Placer County.

“The greatest thing about the event is the culture, the history, the tradition,” Prout said. “What we’ve pushed for is a sense of community.”

The event will feature traditional dancers, vendors, blankets, demonstrations, food and music. Prout said one of the greatest features of the event is “everyone’s favorite” Indian tacos.

The Maidu Dancers and Traditionalists will be dancing at the event and blessing the dance floor.

Colfax Indian Day is free, however they will be selling raffle tickets for a “big” and “small” raffle. The big raffle tickets will be $5 and the small raffle will be $1. Proceeds from these raffle tickets will go toward next year’s event, according to Prout.

Prout said they waited until recently to interact with the community because they struggled with the balance of maintaining their traditions and sharing with the community.

He said he hopes that the tribe can engage more with the community and create a stronger relationship between the two.

The Colfax-Todds Valley Consolidated tribe of the Colfax Rancheria are not considered a restored tribe within the federal government. A restored tribe is one that is federally recognized.

The tribe has been trying to gain recognition for over twenty years, Prout said.

“A lot of people think were gone, or that we don’t exist, when we are a very much active and thriving community,” Prout said. “We still practice ceremony, we carry tradition, and we are still here and will remain here.”

ave you ever wondered where your frying pan came from or how it was created? Probably not, but the trade of it all is quite interesting on how those and other metal type of products are created.

Alex Blanca, a Newcastle resident of 41 years is the owner and metal spinner of Al’s Metal Spinning Co. “I got into the trade in 1968 when I got out of the Army, I just celebrated 50 years of being in the trade,” Blanca said. “We moved up here from Fremont in 1977, my wife, Kathy and our two daughters, Cori and Stacey.”

When they moved, they also brought the business up and started reproducing antique auto parts. They have been known as Al’s Antique Auto Parts for many years and when the overseas markets started reproducing parts in the mid ‘80s, they had to adjust their business.

Blanca explains they went more into what they do best, which was spin metal. They still produce certain antique auto parts but mainly focus on the commercial side for other companies.

“The metal spinning trade is probably one of the oldest around and not heard of much since metal stamping and plastic during the ‘30s and ‘40s really started affecting the metal spinning trade,” Blanca said. “Metal spinning came to the United States in 1840 by a fellow named Jordan from Europe.”

He explains that some shops will only specialize in aluminum or brass, or titanium and exotic metals that the aircraft industry uses and that it can get high tech. Blanca does a lot of aluminum, brass, copper and a bit of stainless steel. It is all a part of the diversity of what a metal spinner can do.

In the 1980s Blanca was approached to make parts of blood analyzing machines including the carousels, the pans, the covers and the shields. He adds that they were in the right place at the right time and were making upwards of 500 of them a month.

“When we moved up here, I wanted my own identity, my own customers and the ones we developed over the years, treat them right, try to make their delivery dates and go from there,” Blanca said.

Blanca shared many highlights from his career path including one where he was approached at a car show in Southern California asking if he was able to 1-inch hemispheres out of brass. Blanca recalls that the gentlemen said no one wanted to do it for just six items; while he didn’t blame them, he took the offer because he was looking for work.

“I knocked them out and sent them down to him, he asked if I knew what they were for and I had no idea,” Blanca recalls. “Well, they were making the robotics for the E.T. project and the parts I made were for the eyeballs and the eyelids.”

Once again, at the right place at the right time, Blanca was able to get his company’s foot in the door. The company was making also making robotics for Disneyland, Disney World and other amusement parks.

There are many local projects that he has taken on including creating gold pans of varying sizes for tourist areas as well as Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park and many other local projects.

“Metal spinning is a visual,” Blanca said. “That is what we are really trying to get across — not how to do it but what it is and what it has been contributing to our society.”

“This year we are flying Aldrine Guerrero in from Kauai,” Peterson said.

Guerreros’ playing style has been described as a mix of Hawaiian, classical, flamenco and pop.

The Dani Joy Trio, international singer and songwriter and featured artist of Ko’aloha Ukulele, will also be performing that evening. As a bonus, Dani Joy will direct the Peewee Ukulele Orchestra, a group of 8- to 14-year-olds.

The concert will take place Aug. 10 at the State Theatre.

The following day of the Ukulele Festival is devoted to learning the instrument and honing in skills.

Nine featured instructors including Joy and Guerrero will teach about a dozen workshops at the Canyon View Community Center. The instruction will range for beginners up to advanced players looking to hone in their ukulele strumming skills.

Workshops include such topics as: grasping the basics, how to write a song, learn and explore chords, and styles of playing such as flamenco, blues and Hawaiian.

New for this year, a ukulele Jamboree will take place at Recreation Park.

“The Jamboree starts around 5:30 p.m., we pull up Hall’s (Towing) flatbed tow truck for a stage and away we go,” Peterson said. “The Jamboree is free to the public; just bring a chair or blanket. There will be some straw bale seating thanks to Echo Valley.”

The informal, and possibly spontaneous concert, will have open jam sessions, group performances and an open mic. To sign up a band for the performance, email Budd Snell at Bsnell00@gmail.com.

Throughout the festival there will be drawings for free ukuleles.

Hundreds are expected to attend the festival.

The first event had an attendance of 38 and last year there were 200, Peterson said.

“We grow each year, especially since we added the Friday night concert at the State Theatre in 2015,” she said. “We get local concert goers as well as folks who come in for the weekend festivities.”

he Gold Country Fair is back in town, the only place where you can find exotic animals, carnival rides and stormtroopers all in one place.

From Sept. 6 to 9, residents of the Placer County and beyond will be able to shop, eat, ride carnival rides and spend time with family and friends at the Gold Country Fairgrounds located at 1273 High St. The fair has been going on for the past 129 years and has become a tradition for many residents and community members.

There will be 50 indoor vendors and 50 outdoor vendors offering visitors food, crafts and products ranging from french fries to toys to mattresses.

“This is a family experience that shouldn’t be rushed through, you can spend the whole day there,” Don Ales, CEO of the Gold Country Fairgrounds and event center, said.

The theme this year is “California Nights and Carnival Lights” which is a nod to both California State Parks and Butler Amusements Inc. for their support through the planning process, Ales said.

However, they are bringing in some new features as well.

This year, $5 Fridays are being replaced with $5 Thursdays. Ales said the change came to increase attendance on Thursday nights.

On Friday and Saturday, there will be a Monster Truck and Quad War, a new addition to the traditional festivities.

There will also be a “pit party” where kids can take pictures with the drivers and trucks.

On Sunday, there will be a Demolition Derby with a special new kids demolition derby. Tickets for the Monster Truck show and the Demolition Derby are separate from admission to the fair.

Another new addition to the festivities this year is a home brewing contest. Local home-brewers will put their skills to the test and visitors can take part in a taste-test to see which beer is the best.

‘Ol Republic Brewery of Nevada City will be creating a brew exclusively for the Gold Country Fair again for visitors to enjoy.

There will be three musical stages that will feature local artists such as the Spazmatics, Flock of 80z and Auburn Road.

The Ag-venture kids zone will offer fishing shacks, exotic animals, pony rides and dino rides. On Saturday there will be stormtroopers for pictures as well.

The Best Buy educational building will offer virtual reality experience and a home of the future, another favorite the fair is bringing back.

Ales said they made changes to the overall grounds by adding more landscaping and adding better restroom facilities to make the park more clean.

“The overall family experience is going to be unique,” Ales said. “It’s so family friendly, no matter your background, there will be something there for the whole family to enjoy.”

or those who have never attended a Spazmatics concert, something just might be missing in your life. And that something is a nerdy, new wave dance party featuring an intense set of ‘80s pop music.

The band members of the Spazmatics wear bowties, plaid pants, taped glasses and suspenders as homage to the 1980s film “Revenge of the Nerds.” As they bounce around the stage in synchronized choreography, the pocket protectors and short shorts add a wonderfully hilarious theatrical element to the overall vibe as the band plays hits like “Safety Dance,” “Video Killed the Radio Star,” “Just What I Needed” and “White Wedding.”

Musical covers range from a slough of bands and artists such as Men at

Work, Madonna, Rick Springfield, Cindy Lauper, The Cure, Flock of Seagulls, Oingo Boingo, Tears for Fears and many others. The undeniably catchy songs and energetic dance moves make the Spazmatics a thoroughly enjoyable show for all ages.

The Spazmatics are a creation of Perfect World Entertainment, the self-proclaimed world leader in the production of musical era tributes since 1992. The chain band has groups in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Nashville and more. Foothill Magazine recently asked the wacky band members of the Spazmatics some questions about the band. The following are their answers:

How did the Spazmatics get started?

Do you have a favorite song to perform?

Wayne Famous: “The Spazmatics were created around 2005 by Perfect World Entertainment, a world leader in era tribute shows for the last twenty years.

I was the company leader of they’re other successful show band The Afrodisiacs and was asked to find members to launch The Spazmatics in the San Francisco Bay Area.”

Leonard Feingold: “’Rebel Yell.’”

Your shows are so high energy. How do you do it?

Wayne Famous: “We have specifically designed this high energy show to appeal to an audience that is right in front of us or completely in the back of an arena. There is constant choreography that correlates with every song. I specifically go after cast members who have the right mentality and physical ability to handle the show, it’ a workout.

We generally leave each set drenched and pride ourselves on every set being executed at the highest level of stamina and spirit.”

What’s your background in music?

Wayne Famous: My music career began in the third grade on clarinet/ sax which led to drums due to my band instructor being so inspiring. My first band, “castle BLAK” got signed to EMI America and we released an album that did well in Europe. Outside of Spazmatics, I currently record with Night Ranger’s Brad Gillis and various other high profile artists around the world. We have many cast members who also tour with various big name artists such as Alanis Morissette, Korn and Patty Smyth.”

Tell us something about yourself not many people know: Leonard Feingold: “I was voted ‘Most Mysterious’ in my senior year of High School.”
