itting down in the newly opened Vin Uva in Granite Bay is relaxing and welcoming as you are greeted with smiles, excitement and is a place where everybody knows your name. Cue “Cheers” theme song. The wine tasting room opened July 12 and has already created conversation throughout the region. Founded by managing members Joseph Smock, president, and Peter E. Story, winemaker and director of Vineyards, their story is unique, simple and local. In January 2015, while having a conversation Peter and Father Matthew Spencer simply were discussing that a vineyard would look beautiful on the Oblates’ property at Mount St. Joseph off Wells Avenue in Loomis. “Peter organized a group of us together to see how we could pull this off,” Smock said. “The easiest way? To start a winery, start a company with private investors.” Smock and Story put their initial mon-

ey down and bought 20 tons of grapes in 2015 and made the wine. Currently, they have 92 investors and most of them are within 10 miles of the area. “All people who either love it because they love supporting the order of priests in Loomis at St. Joseph Morello Catholic Church in Granite Bay or the romance of owning part of a winery, especially with Peter being here,” Smock said. Story is a nationally recognized Napa winemaker and was the owner and winemaker at St. Helena Winery until “re-

tiring” to Loomis in 2010. Derek Irwin, consulting winemaker works with Story to create unique and extraordinary wines for Mount Saint Joseph Wines. Story explains that most of the early investors were retirees, others were the church parishioners. “That loved the idea on how to support new seminaries from third world countries that didn’t have money to complete their education within the seminaries,” Story said. Smock and Story designed the com-
pany to make it a larger organization, so they can have lots of people helping to create something meaningful for the community and the church. Story explains that his previous wine experience brought him to help create and invest in this LLC so that they can beautify the Oblate’s property with a vineyard and get into the wine business. This process shows in the outcome and provides delicious, memorable wines. Henry Farvo, director of sales explains that the other unique part of the business is that the investors are out in the field and learning how to work in the vineyard with Story.

My Mother’s Voice helps children acquire their own personal library
D
uring her teaching years in the 1990s, Granite Bay resident Donja Garvey was always concerned by the disparity of income levels of the children she taught. This inequality bothered her so much in 2006 she decided to put together bylaws and goals for a nonprofit organization she named, My Mother’s Voice. “I decided on the name because of my core belief that children should be nurtured,” Garvey said. “Children are our future. We have a moral obligation to take care of everyone and not leave anyone out. Someone needs to speak for the children. Through the work we are doing at My Mother’s Voice we are making it personal.” Garvey said she knew helping the children attending Title 1 schools in our local area was where she wanted to start. She set up a partnership with the Roseville and Twin River school districts that involves monthly visits to the schools where Garvey and her volunteers not only read to the kindergarten through third-grade classes but also provide a book to each child in the class with an individualized book plate with their name on it as well as giving them additional

school supplies throughout the year. “For many of these children the books we give them are the only books they have. It’s the beginning of their own personal library,” Garvey said. “The statistics are quite sobering with about 75 percent of the children at Title 1 schools being part of the free and reduced school lunch program. We have about 400 children in
each of the schools we visit that receive assistance from our organization.” Garvey said the schools she visits in Roseville include Kaseberg, Woodbridge and Cirby elementary schools along with four schools in the Twin Rivers school district. “The more we can help students read, the better equipped they will be to be successful in the next grade, to find their talent, and set their own goals. If we provide the opportunities early in their school career, the more their world expands,” Garvey said. “Research has shown that the kindergarten through third grade are formative years. If a child is not reading at grade level by the time they are in third grade it is difficult for them to catch up. Most children are capable, they just haven’t had the enrichment they need.” At the beginning of each school year Garvey said she starts her program with a toy train engine and reads “The Little

Engine That Could” to all the classes. “I like this book because with its phrase, ‘I think I can, I think I can,’ it promotes the idea of always trying, whether it’s trying to do well in school, learning how to jump rope, or whatever,” Garvey said. Another popular book Garvey and her volunteers usually read each year is “Llama, Llama Red Pajama” and each child receives a new set of pajamas, which is a special treat for most. In addition to helping these children acquire their own library of books each year, with the assistance of Mike Watson, president and CEO of Interloc Solutions in Folsom, Garvey said each child is given a tote bag, blanket, hats and gloves each year. “One year when we passed out the blankets, one child was so excited and said to me, ‘Oh I used to have one of these,’” Garvey said.
Kathy Bellis is another volunteer who Garvey said has been consistent with support to My Mother’s Voice. Bellis is a member of Caring for Kids, which is a group of about 30 women Rocklin residents. “We support children through our donations of hundreds of books and school supplies to My Mother’s Voice,” Bellis said “We help families with their needs because we believe in the commitment My Mother’s Voice has to the community’s early readers, and we enjoy being able to give back.” According to Garvey, the partnerships she has also formed with the teachers have been invaluable. They are the ones who let Garvey know specifics about each child and their families. If a teacher knows the parents of her students don’t know how to read or understand English, Garvey said through My Mother’s Voice, she can direct them to classes they can take within their community. My Mother’s Voice can also help find school supplies and clothing for the children and household items and food for the families. Kim Vaughan is a kindergarten teacher at Cirby Elementary School. She said her students are always thrilled when Garvey comes to her class. “The kids can’t wait to choose their forever books to take home,” Vaughan

said. “Most of my students don’t have any books at home, so they are even more excited that these books are theirs to keep. They love the stories she reads and feel so loved when she arrives with special goodies for them. It’s amazing to see the smiles and hugs she receives from them each and every time she is in the class. We LOVE Ms. Donja and are so thankful for her generous heart!” Garvey said the Rocklin Unified School District school libraries also donate books. his year marks the 14th year of Total Body Fitness’ Women’s Triathlon Festival. This event is an all-women event that offers four different multisport races. Two triathlons, with the traditional swim-bike-run course; one is an easy super-sprint distance and the other is a more challenging longer course, plus two duathlons which offer a run-bikerun course. Founder and Race Director of Total Body Fitness Bill Driskill adds that once again it is super easy and fun and the other is a bit tougher. “This event is perfect for athletes of all levels with the four different events and the two levels of difficulty,” Driskill said. “We have many first-time triathletes and duathletes racing with us each year, discovering the multisport lifestyle.”

any little girls dream of becoming a princess one day. For Lindsay Grimes and Madeline Ramos, that dream came true. Grimes, 33, and Ramos, 24, founded their company, Whimsy & Wishes Event Entertainment, in 2016. The two met in 2009 when Ramos started dating Grimes’ brother, Chris, but they didn’t become friends until a few years later. Little did they know that their friendship was the beginning of a whimsical startup company that would bring countless smiles to children of all ages. Grimes began singing and performing in musicals at church at age 6. Since then she has been in many plays, musicals and concerts, locally and in San Francisco, and currently sings jazz and blues in cabaret in Sacramento. Grimes is also a licensed makeup and hair stylist, and has experience working with children of all ages. Ramos is a talented artist and makeup artist with a passion for event organization and working with kids. During high school, Ramos spent her afternoons mentoring elementary school children and caring for infants at the baby wing of the Sacramento Food Bank. Ramos attended Lesley University where she majored with a degree in psychology and minor in art therapy for children. “Our strengths are very different,” Grimes said. “Me and Maddy together make the ultimate business woman.” Ramos agreed and added, “We keep each other grounded.” Several years before Whimsy and Wishes came to life, Grimes was working for a party company as Queen Elsa, from Disney’s “Frozen,” but just wasn’t satisfied with the quality of work. “I loved doing it,” Grimes said. “I thought, ‘I’ve been performing for years; I can do this.’” After an attempt at a “normal” job of working for a real estate agency, Grimes brought the idea of starting a new, high-quality character entertainment company to Ramos, who was working as a nanny, in March of 2016. “We planned the whole company in one month,” Ramos said. The ambitious pair worked together to

create a company name, business model and website, and brainstormed ideas for costumes and props. “We just kind of meshed everything together that we both knew,” Ramos said. For their first event, a birthday party, they dressed as fairies with handmade tutus, crafts and toad stools. When the party was over, Grimes and Ramos were even more committed and wholeheartedly intent on pursuing their goals. “There was a lot of trial and error — and still is,” Grimes admitted. “That’s the way you keep growing; we’re constantly trying to improve.” The two agreed that owning their own business has many advantages that make all the hours spent advertising, making costumes, developing party packages and conversing with clients worthwhile. “One of the best parts is just having the power over it (the company),” Ramos said. “If you have an idea it can actually come true! You don’t have to ask anyone.” Although owning their business gives these young women freedom and power, it also comes with a lot of work that requires time and attention to detail. “It’s really long hours and we have to sacrifice time,” Grimes said. “We see each other and communicate more than we do with our significant others. But I know it’s the long hours now putting in for a big future. We want this to be a longterm thing.” Ramos added that their work is also physically demanding and the amount of time and effort put into these practices is often underestimated. “Your back is hurting after face-painting for hours, and then the look … ,” Ramos’ voice trailed off and Grimes interjected, “It’s magic.”

himsy and Wishes now has four performing artists, in addition to Grimes and Ramos, and offers face painting, balloon twisting, glitter bars, hair-braiding and styling, glitter tattoos and magical manicures. Some party packages include live performances by a princess or character, interactive stories and games. One of the most recent additions is a pre-ballet class called Princess and Me Dance Class. After months of preparation, Grimes and Ramos introduced this unique, weekly event with a different princess teaching 3- to 5-year-olds beginning ballet technique and movement in April. “Parents tell us their kid used to be really shy and now they’re not,” said Ramos with a smile. The girls, and some boys, come dressed in sparkly tutus and colorful costumes, ready to twirl and point their toes with their favorite magical princess. The classes are held Sunday mornings at MOVE! Studio in Sacramento. Grimes recalled a past event at a dental office. Dressed as “tooth fairies,” they provided face painting for the dental staff. “It’s absolutely amazing to me how much facepaint can change people,” Grimes said. She described an older woman who had never had her face painted before, and vividly remembers the mirthful look on the woman’s face when she looked in a mirror and saw the cute design. Whimsy and Wishes has worked with the Make a Wish Foundation and will be volunteering with Shriners Hospitals for Children in the near future. In addition to children’s birthday parties, within the past two years, the performers of Whimsy and Wishes have also been hired for festivals, holiday parties and weddings. Their high-quality art, love for children and effervescent personalities have endowed them with paramount reviews on social media. “We like to bring magic to people no matter what age,” Ramos said. “We’re letting people be themselves.”

eadership is hard to come by. But when you combine experience with tradition and accountability, leadership seems to naturally blossom. For head coach Jeff Evans, the biggest asset that his football team carries a year after his Granite Bay Grizzlies were crowned the Division II Sac-Joaquin Section Champions is the examples set by his group of seniors.
Last season, the Grizzlies went 12-3 and captured their sixth overall section title — their first since their 2012 State Championship run — before ultimately falling to Pittsburg in the D-II NorCal final. Despite the NorCal loss, what came from the 2017 postseason run is a bond that drives the 2018 team to have repeated success, Evans said. CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

I don’t really believe along those lines,” Evans said, who enters his fourth season as the Grizzlies’ head coach. “Our biggest thing as coaches is to see how our guys come together. It really is a tough process. We saw the team come together right at the beginning of the playoffs, so we knew we had a good run ahead of us.” Granite Bay went 4-2 last year in an ever-toughening Sierra Foothill League, Jeff Evans returns for his fourth season as head coach of Granite Bay. which has now added longtime perennial powerhouse Grant from the Delta League and Whitney from the Capital Valley Conference for the 2018 season. This year’s senior class took a group trip to Santa Cruz over the summer to work out and partake in team-bonding activities. Evans said that they went into that trip in clicks but came home as a unit. “The seniors will really be the voice of what we do here,” Evans said. “We coaches, the less we have to yell and scream and correct guys, the more that they can correct each other, the more we get to coach, the better off we are. Some of these guys came in as juniors, kind of wide-eyed, just waiting to be told what to do, to all of a sudden taking the reins. It’s really cool.” Among the returning seniors are a handful of All-Metro players led by defensive tackle Griffin Ruddell, nose guard Bryce Van Order and middle linebacker Jacob Ellis, who Evans says is one of the best players in the entire section. “We know the shoes that we have to fill,” said Ellis, whose 79 tackles were the fifth most among SFL juniors last season. He leads a defense that will include Ruddell, Cobe Weeks, Matt Solone, Mat-
thew Fowler, Joe Young, Anthony Martinez and Tannen Vagle, among many others. Offensively, the Grizzlies will be led by senior quarterback TJ Robertson, who got into four games last season behind All-Metro QB Jade Foddrill. “TJ waited patiently (last year),” says Evans. “He was chomping at the bit. He’s a good leader, and he’s gonna have a big season.” Evans says that running backs Anthony Martin and Chase Garmon should also make their names known around the SFL. Both are part of the returning senior class that learned from the likes of last year’s graduating class that included Foddrill, Will Craig, Evan Tattersall, Blake Peterson, Jack Powers and Matt Barron. “We’ve learned work ethic, and it’s all because of those guys,” Van Order said. “We’ve hit the weights harder. We come

Everybody cares a lot more when we know how far we can go.” Granite Bay begins their 2018 campaign Aug. 17 at home against Monte Vista (Danville) out of the East Bay Conference in the North Coast Section. A trip to Reno, Nevada, to face Damonte Ranch in Week 2 precedes two more tough assignments — at Jesuit Aug. 31 and at home against Vacaville Sept. 7 — before the gauntlet that is the SFL begins in Week 5 with a Section finals rematch with Del Oro on Sept. 14. “We like having the feeling of not relaxing,” Evans said. “We like being on our toes right now. That little sense of urgency helps us out. “We’ll come be that nameless, faceless group. We’ll just hide behind that shield. That ‘G’. And then we’re just going to come after people from behind that.
Slowly but surely, people will realize the names of the individuals, but the strength of the team will be what separates us.”

ast summer, my husband and I celebrated our one-year anniversary with a trip to Europe. We spent months planning out our train rides on the Eurail, Airbnbs in different countries, museums of Van Gough and world history, and restaurants in each city. In Spain, we explored Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Malaga and Granada. After a long and hot train and then bus ride to Granada, we found our Airbnb on the third floor of a building just off Calle Gran Via de Colon on Calle Sta. Lucia. It was about 5 p.m., early for dinner, but we had been traveling since 10 a.m. with only some stale bread and bits of cheese and we were hungry. We dropped our bags in the room, quickly checked out or cool, Spanish-style space, and braced ourselves for the subtropical heat. The streets were stone-laid and caked with dirt, and the ancient buildings looming over us on each side seemed to be guardians of another time looking down on us, two hungry travelers. As we were walking, we stumbled upon a rustic tavern with a sign above its door that said “Tapas.” We stepped inside. The restaurant was completely empty and the bartenders looked surprised to see us. They waved in a gesture of “sit anywhere” and we did, although we were wondering why no one else was dining here. What we discovered soon after is that “dinner time” in Spain is much, much later than 5 p.m. Since it’s the hottest part of the day, most Spaniards are at home resting or napping during this time. In any case, there we were, getting tapas with personalized service in a pub in Spain. In Granada, and most places in Spain, tapas — small snacks of bread, meats, fruits or cheeses — are complimentary with any drink order. My husband ordered a “cerveza” and I a sangria. Our drinks came with several slices of bread and an olive tapenade. I had never had tapenade before, and was nervous because it didn’t look particularly appetizing. But when in Spain! I cautiously dipped the corner of the crusty bread into the dark mush and … it was delicious. Originally from the south of France, tapenade is an olive-based dish usually with anchovies or vinegar, capers and herbs. In my recipe, I didn’t use anchovies, but included some of the brine from the kalamata olives to replace the vinegary flavor. The rosemary adds just the right touch of savory flavor, and the squeeze of lemon gives it a fresh taste. Tapenade can be served as an appetizer or tapa, or with the main dish. This mixed olive tapenade pairs well with fish such as halibut or tilapia. If you find the flavor of kalamata olives to be too strong, try adding more black olives to the mix and blend again. This should reduce the abrasive kalamata taste, without losing the traditional tangy nature of the mixture.
This recipe is simple, quick and the perfect addition to a light summer meal. It can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to two weeks. With leftovers, the tapenade can be used as a spread on sandwiches or with toast and cheese. It’s also a nice replacement for hummus if you want to try something different. This may go without saying, but a chilled glass of sangria or Spanish-style beer is also an excellent addition to go alongside this European dish. Experiment with different kinds of olives and herbs to create your own scrumptious tapa. iAclamaciones! Cheers!
Mixed olive tapenade INGREDIENTS
8 oz jar kalamata olives, pitted and drained of half the brine 8 oz black olives, pitted and drained ¼ cup sundried tomatoes ¼ cup chopped parsley
5 cloves garlic 2 tbsp capers 1 tbsp olive oil Pinch of rosemary 1 lemon slice, squeezed
DIRECTIONS
1. Place all ingredients, with the exception of crostini, bread or crackers, in a blender or food processor and blend until almost smooth. 2. Serve in a small bowl with crostini, bread or crackers. 3. Refrigerate for up to two weeks.

ohn Dryden famously said, “We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.” Confucius said, “Men’s natures are alike; it is their habits that separate them.” And Aristotle noticed that, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” It’s pretty clear that the habits that we adopt will shape who we are. What are your habits? Do you eat the same thing for lunch, go through the same exercise routine, and fall into bed at the same time each night? Or maybe you’ve made a habit out of eating something sweet before bed, avoiding the gym, and staying up as late as possible. When it comes to your fitness, the two habits that define you are your eating and exercise habits. In fact, everyone that you know who is in great shape has dialed in these two important habits. If you aren’t happy with your body, then simply adjust your eating and exercise habits. Here’s how to adopt a habit:
1. DECIDE ON THE ONE HABIT. It’s tempting to pick up three or four healthy habits but choosing just one new habit is realistic and doable. Here are some healthy habit ideas: • Do not eat after 7 p.m. each night. • Bring your lunch to work instead of eating fast food. • Exercise four times a week after work for 45 minutes each time. • Only eat fruits and veggies as your afternoon snack. • Get up early and exercise for an hour each morning.

2. WRITE YOUR NEW HABIT DOWN. Also include your three main motivators for developing this new habit, the obstacles you’ll face, and your strategies for overcoming these obstacles. Here’s an example: • My new habit is to work with a personal trainer three times each week. • My three main motivators are to feel confident in my bathing suit this summer, to have more energy, and to fit into my skinny jeans. The obstacles I will face are not having the energy to go to my session after work, not having enough money to pay for sessions, and not having my spouse’s support. Three ways I will overcome these obstacles are by doing my workouts before work instead of after work so I have more energy, cutting down on frivolous spending to ensure that I can afford it, and asking my spouse to join me so we can get in shape together.
3. COMMIT FULLY TO YOUR NEW HABIT, IN A PUBLIC WAY. This could mean posting it on social media, or simply announcing it at the dinner table. Put yourself in a position where you’ll be embarrassed to give up on your new habit.
4. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR PROGRESS. You could keep a detailed journal or simply make a check mark on each calendar day that you successfully exercise your new habit. Once your new habit becomes second nature, usually in about 30 days, feel free to add a second habit by going through the same steps. Best of luck making some new healthy habits this summer!

This year’s theme is California Nights and Carnival Lights! The fair features a carnival, food, vendors, still exhibits, the Best Buy educational building, SEPTEMBER agricultural exhibits, junior livestock auction, demolition derby, monster trucks, a kids world and more.
