Helping residents with financial matters is an honor for Melanie Bergevin When Melanie Bergevin, a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Lincoln, graduated from college with a business degree, she planned to pursue a career in management and marketing. However, in 2000, her life took an abrupt detour. While jogging, she was hit by an uninsured driver and suffered a broken back and leg. After six months of physical therapy, she was able to walk again. But then came the medical bills. “It was pretty devastating but a huge lesson in insurance,” Bergevin said. The good news was that the accident and the stretch of time away from work fostered a life-changing career shift. Bergevin’s financial ethic developed in her teens when she saved and invested money earned from part-time jobs. Following the accident, she decided to put that gift for money management to use by helping others. “I decided that helping people with their money is how I can give back,” Bergevin said. “I can show people how your life can change in a split second and how it pays to be prepared when it does.” Eleven years ago, Bergevin opened an Edward Jones financial services office on Del Webb Boulevard in Lincoln Hills that she operates with Cindy White, her office administrator. Bergevin said that financial goals deserve a “face-to-face” conversation. “We can help people prepare for retirement,

Kitten Central of Placer County helps save animals’ lives Kitten Central of Placer County, founded in 2009 and a nonprofit organization since 2011, saves orphaned neonate kittens, 0 to 28 days old, and has helped Placer County Animal Services drastically reduce the number of cats killed every year. “Our main client that we give priority placement to in our program is Placer County Animal Services (PCAS), which serves Lincoln and surrounding Placer County,” said Penny Dougherty, Kitten Central of Placer County founder and CEO. “Since our partnership with them began in 2010, they have achieved 0-percent euthanasia of neonate kittens.” “We support Animal Spay Neuter in Auburn who often requests intake kittens from trapping projects in Lincoln and all over Placer County that are served by PCAS,” Dougherty said. “We also support the Placer SPCA, which was euthanizing bottle-baby kittens if an appropriate foster home was not available by close of business. This was because the kittens could not survive on their own overnight without regular feedings. Now they come to Kitten Central instead of being euthanized.” Dougherty said Kitten Central of Placer County supports the community with its Feral Community Cat program. “We encourage the public to trap female community cats with their kittens from Lincoln and surrounding areas instead of just surrendering the kittens.” Dougherty said. “This way, we can stop the cycle of unwanted

kittens being born to these feral colonies in our community by spaying and vaccinating the feral moms before releasing them back to their colony.” Dougherty said the volunteers’ hard work and devotion makes Kitten Central a success. Wise Villa winery takes prize for best winery Dr. Grover Lee, winemaker and owner of Wise Villa Winery, was raised in California’s Central Valley winemaking region. He worked in the grape vineyards and wineries in high school and during summers while earning his B.S. degree in biological science and chemistry. Studying wine, wine regions and winemaking techniques was part of his passion for learning during his dual degree for years of Ph.D. work in biochemistry and his doctorate in clinical pharmacy. His wine and medical knowledge continued as he received his medical school board certification in managed care medicine. Many years of European travels and learning from world-class winemakers helped develop his European-influenced winemaking style. FireStar Yoga offers a variety of affordable classes Out of grief, FireStar Yoga, a helping and healing business, was born in Lincoln. FireStar Yoga owner Renee Airola said yoga helped with her grieving process after her husband died and she was inspired to open her own studio. “When my late husband, Frank Nevarez, long-time Lincoln High School teacher, died in 2010, my friends encouraged me to go to a yoga class,” Airola said. “Yoga helped with the grieving process and also brought many health benefits and friends into my life.” “The name FireStar was inspired by a trip I took to Nicaragua to Ometepe Island with a group of equine veterinarians who donate their time to care for the horses of families who do not have the means or access to equine care,” Airola added. “Our first logo was of a horse with a mane of flame and a star for an eye. Our hope is to someday have a yoga retreat on the island to raise money for the local equine

Awful Annie’s wins Best of the Best for breakfast, lunch On an annual visit to the Auburn area in 1991, Don and Jai Baker stopped at the Awful Annie’s Restaurant for lunch. “We were so charmed by the place that we asked the owner if she’d like to sell. She surprised us by saying that, ‘Yes, as a matter of fact, I do.’ Since owning a restaurant had always intrigued me, we started negotiations and in a short time Annie’s was ours,” Jai Baker said. Due to the success of their Auburn location, the Bakers decided to open a second Awful Annie’s restaurant in Lincoln in 2004, according to Don Baker. “We visited and considered many other cities in the Placer County area. However, Lincoln had a similar charm that reminded us of Auburn,”
Don Baker said. “The town of Lincoln presented a perfect fit to add another restaurant location.”

Country Harvest Bakery named Best Dessert in Lincoln Patti Storer worked in the restaurant industry for 20 years before realizing her dream of opening her own place. Now the readers of the Lincoln News Messenger have voted Country Harvest Bakery, her restaurant, as the Best Dessert in Lincoln. “It is beyond gratifying,” Storer said. “I have put my heart and soul into Country Harvest and I couldn’t have imagined my dream being as well-received as it has been these past years. I can only thank our community for helping me continue to succeed.” Storer said good food is her passion and she loves to share that with others, which has contributed to her success.

“I strive for perfection and I get so much enjoyment watching people enjoying what we do,” Storer said. “Our love for good food is apparent when you walk in. We are enthusiastic about what we serve and the community has shown that they appreciate and share in our enthusiasm by their continued support of the shop.” Country Harvest Bakery is different from
others in the industry because it is not just another coffee shop, Storer said. “We serve a little bit of everything and have created a warm and inviting environment with staff who look forward to being there every day,” Storer said. And, Storer said, Country Harvest Bakery gives back to the community in several ways. “We carry locally-made products from other small businesses in Lincoln, from coffee to candles,” Storer said. “We locally source our produce whenever possible and regularly donate to several local nonprofit organizations.”
