Water-saving tips and surviving hot weather Thanks to A ngie and Burt for writing in and sharing a few tips on how she saves water. W hen Angie comes home from grocery shopping, she gets a big pot and fills it with clean, cool water. She then washes her produce with that water, using it to water her indoor plants when finished. It may not seem like much, but every little bit of water conservation helps.

Burt wrote in that he uses biodegradable organic laundry soap and has his washer hooked up so the wash and rinse cycles go into a holding tank which he then uses for outdoor w a t e r i n g . No w t h a t ’s clever!

Now onto the hot weather. According to the news, it seems children and animals are the victims of distracted parents and hot weather. Did you know that if you see a child or pet in a locked car and you are concerned for their safety, you can break a window to save the child or pet? The California Good Samaritan Law will protect you. Here is how t he law reads :

Some have recommended that you call 911 prior to breaking a window so your intent will be known and recorded. W hatever you do, be smart about your actions.

Do you have pets outside? Be sure they have plenty of fresh drinking water. Just as we get thirsty in the heat, so do our pets.

Remember to keep pets hydrated on these hot days. avoid the heat. If possible, provide them with a misting system where they will be staying. However, if it is a scorcher of a day, please put your animals indoors.

Imagine the temperature asphalt can get sitting in the sun all day. If you can’t walk on it barefoot, why would your pet be able to do the same? The pads on your pet’s paws may be a bit thicker than the bottoms of our feet but they are not shoes and can easily burn. So, be aware of what time you take your pet for a walk. Early morning and after the sun has gone down, allowing the pavement to cool, are the best times. I saw some people walking their dog in the heat of the day and the dog kept trying to walk in the shade. The ow ners seemed to be

unaware that their dog was zigging and zagging to the shady spots. Try to pay attention to your pet’s behavior, they will let you know what is going on.

Summer is here and so is the heat. We all need Ways to Save ourselves and pets from overheating and dehydrating. Reusable thermos water bottles will keep your water cool throughout the day. Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide as the active ingredients are the safest products for you and your family. Hats and sunglasses are a necessity.

They require speciali zed k nowledge a nd equipment to provide competent diagnosis.

In fact, a septic system is a sewage treatment plants in miniature and requires expertise well beyond that of a home inspector. Once a septic tank has been uneart hed, t he contents must be pumped into a sewage disposal truck, and this can only be done by a contractor in the business of servicing and maintaining sewage t reat ment systems.

Even when a septic system seems to be work ing per fect ly, a professional evaluation is imperative. Problems sometimes occur with systems that are relat i v e l y n e w, w e l l designed, and properly installed. For example, c ont a m i n at ion c a n result from common household chemicals such as drain cleaners, detergents, solvents, and bleach. These can kill the bacteria in a septic tank, causing excess solids to clog the pipes in the leach field.

Once t h is happens, repairs can be costly, requiring major excavation of the grounds and i n st a l lat ion of new pipes and leach rock.

When homes are sold in rural areas, the sellers typically pay for a sept ic inspect ion during the course of escrow. Apparently, no one adv ised you to request this from your s el ler s . P u r c h a si n g rural property without a professional septic inspection is a gamble that can have costly results. When a septic system stops working, the only thing that goes dow n t he t oi le t i s money.

Dear Barry: Does an electric water heater in a garage need to be raised, or is this only required for gas water heaters?

Josh Dear Josh: The residential code requires that a water heater capable of producing a f lame or a spa rk sha l l be on a raised platform, when installed in a garage. An electric water heater can produce a spark and is t herefore not exempt f rom t he requirement. However, some municipa lit ies waive this requirement for gas a nd elect r ic water heaters that are designed to keep out flammable vapors.
