The Niche Ice Cream

She was the one who introduced me to it and I wanted to impress her,” he laughed. “I went on Craigslist to find a little food truck or trailer, and then I researched for weeks on it. A few months went by, and before I knew it, I had a store that I signed a five-year lease to. I thought, ‘Shoot, what am I doing?’ I had no idea what I was doing, absolutely no idea.”

While Tupchiy is not still with that girl, the 25-year-old has a different love — The Niche Ice Cream.

When asked why he chose ‘Niche,’ he said it fits with what they do.

“Ice cream inside of donuts is not something you find. We are the one and only place that seals it fully. Some places will heat it up, but it doesn’t seal all the way,” he said.

Tupchiy was lucky enough to get a custom-made, one-of-a-kind machine made for him from Italy, which is what really sets his business apart.

“No one has it, and no one ever will,” he said.

The Niche Ice Cream was opened in August of 2016, but they were making sales a month before when a customer walked in during a training day.

“We had paper on the windows and a ‘Coming Soon’ sign for about eight months. While we were training, a lady came in and asked if we were open yet. She got in line and said it was a good way to CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

train my employees,” Tupchiy said. “She went on Facebook that day, and people started coming in. We ended up having a line out the door and we ran out of basically everything, including change.”

When you walk into The Niche Ice Cream, you immediately notice how neutral the color tone is, but Tupchiy said he did that on purpose.

“Usually ice cream shops are colorful and bright,” he said.

“When you walk in here, the only brightness is the flavors, the toppings and the customer service you get from us. When we hire people, we try to ask for Dutch Bros-style, but not to that extent, and the customer service of Chick-Fil-A, but not to that extent. We have great customer service, and we are unique.”

Basically how it works is customers have the option to get a single or double scoop of ice cream and one topping in their doughnut, or a waffle cone or cup. You pick your ice cream flavor(s) and a topping, and they take it behind a wall to do their magic of sealing the donut shut.

“You can layer the ice cream, or get them side-by-side,” he said. “The machine seals the donut, so it is hot on the outside, cold on the inside and powdered sugar on top.”

The Niche Ice Cream originally started with the original glazed donut, and a year into it, they did a blueberry donut for the Fourth of July. Tupchiy said it was completely blue.

“We came up with red velvet donuts on the weekends, and

in February, we introduced a cinnamon glaze that way you can add different flavors, combinations and toppings,” he said.

‘We have done more than 50,000 donuts, so we can suggest any topping, and any combination to go with your palate.”

At The Niche Ice Cream, there are more than 25 unique ice cream flavors that change regularly, including Huckleberry Heaven, banana, salted caramel, vanilla, birthday cake, horchata, cookies and cream and many more.

The ice cream shop has between 10 and 18 different toppings, which include Fruit Loops, M&Ms, chocolate chips, waffle cone, nuts and more.

When asked what his favorite thing about his business was, Tupchiy said his customers.

“Before, I had a company that was all online sales and marketing, so switching that career completely around and working with customers has been a complete ice breaker for me. My social skills of talking and communicating publically was no where near what it is now,” he said. “It has made a big impact and changed me positively.”

In addition to ice cream inside a donut, The Niche Ice Cream also has milk in a glass and milkshakes. Some of the unique milk flavors include orange creamsicle, root beer, chocolate, banana, strawberry and more.

“We try to keep quality over quantity here,” Tupchiy said.

“Customer service is our No. 1 thing, and we are always open to suggestions. Come try us out.” ✶

The City of Folsom offers the perfect solution to that problem. It’s known as the Wacky Dash and it returns for its fourth consecutive year on Saturday, Aug. 4 at Folsom’s Rodeo Park.

The Wacky Dash is a 2-mile obstacle course challenge with mud pits, water slides, a hay bale tunnel, balance beams, giant inflatables, a foam tunnel, climbing walls, and lots of other wild and crazy features. It’s fun, it’s dirty, it

truly is, just as it is called, wacky.

Participants take the course as a team with their family and friends, or co-workers. Others take it solo. One thing is for sure, regardless of how they take it, participants need to make sure they don’t take it too seriously and have some fun.

The annual event is an athletic competition like no other that takes place on a course that is not your usual competition course.

In 2017, the event drew a record 650 people to compete, according to Lesley Miller of Folsom Parks and Recreation, who presents the event.

While many members of the community at large come out to participate in this event, many community leaders and dignitaries are known to participate from local businesses and the city services to show their spirit in the city that is known for being distinct in nature, especially when it comes to getting wacky.

“What a lot of fun this is,” said Felipe Rodriguez, Folsom’s Fire Chief who competed in his first Wacky Dash with his family last year. Several members of the fire department also participated during the day.

Upon crossing the finish line, participants are presented with a commemorative medal for their efforts.

The event drew participants from all different areas, especially Folsom, where many local businesses and city leaders participated in their respective groups Action is set to being on the course as early as 8 a.m. on Aug. 4. ✶

hen it comes to local summertime happy hours, it’s by far the “big daddy.” It’s known a Tap Folsom and it returns for its fifth year on Friday evening, Aug. 3 in Historic Folsom.

The event takes place on International Beer Day this year and is expected to sell out early once again so getting tickets early will be key to enjoying this local favorite for area-beer enthusiasts.

The Historic Folsom plaza is will be home to a small city of craft HOURS:6 P.M. AUG. 3 brew vendors and great OR 5 P.M. WITH EARLY BEER GEEK food truck fare. This ENTRY will be the fourth out WHERE: HISTORIC FOLSOM PLAZA INFORMATION: TAPFOLSOM.COM of five years that Sutter Street is home to the event, which is known for its tourism and popularity among regional pub crawlers on a regular basis.

This year, Tap Folsom will showcase more than 40 regional ales as breweries from near and far join in the action for this unique tasting affair. The Folsom Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Folsom Partnership presents the event and tickets are already on sale online. Early purchase is suggested.

“Our online ticket sales cut off at 4 p.m. on Friday (Aug.3),” said Mary Ann McAlea, senior vice-president of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce. “Each year, we have a very few small amount of tickets available at the gate.”

In addition to the brew tasting, a variety of food trucks and food vendors will be on hand for the event along with the many breweries. Live music will be performed in the plaza that will be home to fun frothy socializing into the night.

“The Folsom Chamber is proud to produce Tap Folsom.

Make it a perfect Friday night and stay for fun after the event on Sutter Street,” said Joe Gagliardi, CEO and president of the Folsom Chamber. “We use this event as a way to promote

Tickets are still on sale for Tap Folsom online, but act fast. There are several different levels to choose from.

At $65, a Beer Geek ticket will get several perks for the event including entry one hour earlier than the general public and access to the special Rare Beer Area that features a variety of hard-to-find beers. A limited number of Beer Geek tickets will be available.

General admission tasting tickets are $40 and permits entry at 6 p.m. Both levels of tasting tickets include a complimentary keepsake tasting mug. For those who don’t plan to taste at the event but wish to attend, the designated driver ticket is just $10 and those ticket holders will get full admission to the event but will not be able to participate in tastings.

Family-owned business Folsom State Slickers recently opened their doors on June 2 as a continuation of a 23-year legacy that started as City Slickers.

Michelle, Dusty and Alycia Morgan closed City Slickers months back WHERE: 705 GOLD LAKE DRIVE, after unfortunate circumstances, including the passing of Michelle’s father, 200, FOLSOM Alycia’s grandfather, Dennis Dority, who originally opened the business in INFORMATION: FACEBOOK: 1994. @SLICKERS916 Currently, Folsom State Slickers has relocated to the Folsom Historic District and brings a new, but family vibe to the area.

“It’s definitely the same relaxed atmosphere,” Alycia said. “We are family-friendly, and we have food. We welcome people in off the trails, who are kayaking or biking. We want to make this a home for locals as well as support the local community.”

To support the local community, Alycia said the business carries local brews and wines as well as some tasty treats.

She also said they will be offering live music regularly from local musicians and artwork from local artists.

“We are definitely looking to expand our local collection,” she said.

of bites to their customers, but Alycia said they are looking at having a large-scale kitchen to serve southern barbecue.

Alycia said since opening, a bright highlight throughout the experience has been seeing regular customers from City Slickers under the same roof again.

“It’s great to see people happy that we are continuing my grandfather’s legacy and seeing us succeed,” she said. “Everyone has been so supportive, but now we can all sit back and relax with a drink to enjoy it!”

Folsom State Slickers is a full bar with 10 rotating beer taps.

Winifred, a 2-year-old pig, is the famous pig that has been spotted around the Folsom Historic District with her owners John Felts and Amber Shoop Felts, who live in the district.

It all began in April of 2016 when a friend of the Felts had two baby teacup pigs, but they couldn’t keep both.

“My wife wanted a pig,” John said. “I said, ‘No.’ But then a couple days later, we had a pig. We walk her everywhere, and people really enjoy seeing her.”

John said Winnie’s favorite thing to do is to sleep and her second favorite is going on walks.

John is known on the street as ‘the guy with the pig,’ and they go to the Farmer’s Market every Saturday.

“She really does go, ‘we we we we all the way home.’

She complains the entire way home from the market,” he laughed. “My favorite thing about Winnie is seeing how the kids react to her. I love hearing people say that I made their day just by walking a pig.”

Winnie is a vegetarian. She loves walnuts and eats pig food. She also enjoys fruits and vegetables, John said.

When Winnie was a baby, she was 40 pounds and the size of a watermelon. She used to live inside the Felts home until she grew too large and started rooting, which can damage flooring.

“The backyard has been redone with Astroturf, flagstone and bark,” John said. “The front yard is pretty much the same, so she can’t destroy the yard from rooting, but she can still root because that is what pigs do all day.”

Rooting is when pigs dig with their snouts and is a natural behavior.

small teacup pig.

“She was one of those cute little teacups and that’s how big they get. If you find one smaller than her, they are probably being starved as a full-size pig,” he said.

Now at 100 pounds, Winnie is full grown.

The Felts have a dog as well, and John said Winnie tries to play but their dog doesn’t care for her.

“Winnie can be very stubborn, but she is very intelligent,” John said. “Pigs have the mentality of a 3-year-old; the personality of a 13-year-old girl; and the strength of a 12-yearold boy. It’s a good combination.” ✶

COMMUNITY FACILITIES OFFER BUDGET FRIENDLY OPTIONS FOR SAFE FUN IN THE SUN STORY AND PHOTOS BY BILL SULLIVAN School is out and summer is heating up. The combination of those two facts means it’s time to get out and enjoy some of the aquatic amenities our area has to offer.

While our region has numerous swim schools, fitness centers and other businesses that will put you in the water safely this season, there are a number of opportunities presented by our local parks and recreation departments and community service districts in Folsom and El Dorado Hills that offer an affordable option for those on a budget looking to enjoy the summer season without a long-term contract. Additionally, those who patronize these community venues, are helping to fund their maintenance and growth for years to come in the community.

In Folsom, the Steve Miklos Aquatic Center is open at 1200 Riley Street for daily family fun from 1 to 6 p.m. with three pools, giant floating obstacle courses, three-story water slide, interactive play structure, high and low diving boards, and poolside café. Professional lifeguards are always on duty.

If it’s day-to-day fun in the sun you and your youngsters are after, it may be wise to purchase a summer season pass for the best value, although, daily rates

are also available. The center is open to the public for the summer season from May 26 through Sept. 3 While free swimming is a popular choice this time of year, here’s a few of the instructional programs the center has to offer that will help your little ones learn how to cool off safely for years to come.

LITTLE DIPPERS SWIM PROGRAM Little Dippers is exclusively for parents and youngsters age 6 and under. It provides a great opportunity for little ones to splash and play, and increase their water confidence in a less-crowded environment. The program takes place in the activity pool, 10:30 a.m. to noon on Fridays, June 1 through Aug. 10. Admission is $5 per person; all participants are required to exit the facility at noon but are allowed free re-entry at 1 p.m. for recreation swim.

LEARN TO SWIM Swim lessons are offered for all ages, from absolute beginners to advanced levels throughout the summer. A special commemorative charm called a “Tout” is awarded to every swimmer as they successfully pass each class level.

SUMMER CAMPS The Academy Camp for kids ages 8 to 12 years runs all summer, in weekly (Monday through Friday) sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campers learn basic water safety and CPR, visit a Folsom fire station, play a variety of organized water games, and other fun activities.

The Aquatic Adventure Camp for kids ages 8 to 12 years is a great way to keep kids busy on hot summer afternoons. The camp is held 12:45 to 4 p.m.

Monday through Friday, and includes outdoor games, swimming, and movies and activities in the Aquatic Center classroom.

WATER WORKOUTS The Folsom Aquatic Center’s popular Aquacise class is a water-based workout program for ages 18 and older; class is held Tuesday and Thursday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. New this summer is Deep Water Aquacise for ages 18 and older; students wear flotation belts and perform a variety of moves to increase strength and stamina.

IN EL DORADO HILLS Looking for a great place to spend your summer afternoons or evenings in the community of El Dorado Hills? The El Dorado Hills Community Services District Community Pool is a great place to cool off with your family.

Located at 1021 Harvard Way in El Dorado Hills, this facility has all amenities for fun and fitness in the sun including 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards, a zero-entry beach area, wading pools for kids 6 and under. The facility features a snack bar, lap swimming, free wifi, an inflatable obstacle course on select evenings and days. It also offers a great deal of shade and lounge chairs for enjoying your visit.

According to the CSD “mermans” are also welcome.

Zone. This is a dynamic Inflatable Obstacle Course. The Inflatable will be available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings and for Sunday Recreation Swim.

SWIMMING LESSONS El Dorado Hills CSD offers a variety of swimming lessons. Group lessons are available for all ages and continue through Aug. 7. JUNIOR LIFEGUARD CAMP Train to be a junior lifeguard in a twoweek session that uniquely combines rescue skills, emergency responses, aquatic safety, team building activities and daily fitness routines. Two different courses are available beginning on July 9 an July 23. Additional courses are offered for advanced lifeguard skills.

FLICK AND FLOAT Other special events in El Dorado Hills will include “Flick and Float” on the evening of July 18. This event offers a big screen movie, featuring “Moana” at poolside where attendees can enjoy the movie from the comfort of the pool for just $5.

It is set to be a celebration of all things California. While changing times have brought changing looks and exhibitions to the California State Fair, 2018 looks to be bringing the combination of yester-year and tomorrow together into one grand event that is set to open at Cal Expo on July 13.

In its early beginnings back in 1854, the very first exhibition in the Golden State reflected on one thing: agriculture. With California being the nation’s largest agricultural producer, it seems appropriate that the latest version of this California classic will showcase its roots, literally.

The 2018 California fair is set to celebrate the agricultural success of the state. Success that is earned both in livestock farming and that of the fields.

Much attention will be focused on California’s rapidly growing wine industry as well as the explosive growth of the local beer and hop industries. Along with the newest forms of ag to the area will be all of the others that have been a long-standing tradition at the event through the decades.

This year, over 2,700 entries were logged in the wine competition along with that of local craft beers, olive oils, cheese and more. A classic fair wouldn’t be anything without home baked goods and this year’s event will have plenty of that in competition with an abundant homemade entries from baked goods to canned delights Attendees to the California State Fair this year and will have the opportunity to sample many of the winning delights in of the libation type in beverage gardens and learn about all of them.

In other new exhibits, National Geographic will feature a major exhibit, “The Future of Food,” which explores the challenges of population growth.

A life-sized board game will educate kids through the those challenges the state faces in the years ahead. It’s an exhibit that could mold the future farmers of California, scientists, environmental leaders and more.

In addition to the educational games, look for the traditional fair shenanigans, such as pie-eating contests, wiener dog races, the petting barn, live music and more.

Did we just say live music? Yes we did, and the California State Fair has plenty of it with 16 nights of concerts that are free with fair admission at in the Toyota Concert Series line up.

Look for many of music’s top names including War, Berlin, Trace Adkins, Kool & Gang, Easton Corbin, Night Ranger and more. (See schedule of performances).

Seats are available on a first-come-first-served basis. In addition to the free concerts, new events are on tap at Papa Murphy’s Park.

rom bands playing on three stages to the neon lights of the carnival rides the excitement of the Amador County Fair is palpable when you enter the gate.

The Fair celebrates 80 years from July 26 to 29.

Evenings bring concerts under the Sierra skies and music wafts over the crowd from three stages.

Discover country, rock, or blues to tap your toes to, or stop to enjoy the clowns and characters who stroll the grounds. Each evening Picnic Lawn will be filled for tribute concerts to Tom Petty, George

The story behind this locale is quite interesting too. Owners Stewart and his wife Stacey Munnerlyn, originally from the Bay Area, lost their business in a flood, decided to get out of the rat race and attend ice cream school at Penn State, along with courses at University of Wisconsin, Madison, as well as the University of Florida, Gainesville. Since then, they have created over 150 different delectable flavors from when they opened their doors on Aug. 18, 2008. While the owners continue to come up with new flavors, they only have room for about 20 at a time.

Nestled deep in a canyon in the heart of Amador County is a sleepy little historic town called Volcano. While its small in size, this historic community offers plenty to explore during a daytrip southward from Folsom.

Volcano is named for where it sits, in a bowl-shaped valley which early miners reportedly speculated it was caused by a volcano, although no facts have ever been able to support their theory.

Today, just a little over 100 people live in Volcano, which was once a bustling mining town with some 5,000 settlers searching for gold and their searching was successful with nearly $100 million worth of it being found in the area.

Visiting Volcano, one will enjoy seeing a number of Gold Rush-era buildings, some still in use, others standing vacant but a site to enjoy with plenty of history posted about them nearby Volcano is home to one of the oldest general stores in California. Now known as the “Country Store,” this establishment is in the heart of town and has been operating since 1852 (see related story).

While many people in Amador County associate the area primarily with wineries, there are certainly many hidden gems off of the beaten path. One of these locales would be The County Store in Volcano. While most people initially would think that a country store would not be a stop on their Amador County visit; this unique store truly offers a step back in time and simple pieces of nostalgia.

The place is a fabulous stop for history lovers in Volcano, as it is the oldest operating building and was built back in 1852. The Country Store is the oldest running general store in California and quite possibly in the western United States. When visitors first walk into the building, (please keep in mind in years past these were two separate stores and one owner bought out the other for the current expanded retail store), they tend to notice the original flooring to the right. It is worn and wavy, but still beautifully intact. The left side of the store is perfect for shopping for unique collectibles and souvenirs, as well as typical general store items.

Visitors who do not stay for lunch always vow to come back, as The Country Store offers a dark, quaint restaurant setting on the right-hand side.

Restaurant patrons rave about the sandwiches and burgers — specifically the cheeseburger cooked on the flamed-grilled oven, that is typically washed down with one of the local beers on tap. Customers can dine in or even have their lunch across the street at the park. There are also a variety of sandwiches on the menu and entertainment for kids (coloring books, etc.) which most traveling or exploring with young ones appreciate exponentially. Many people consider The Country Store as their favorite lunch stop to or from the Black Chasm Caverns, or those wanting to explore a unique area in the Amador County region.

Along with the collectibles and fantastic food, beer and wine; The Country Store is the epitome of Nordstrom-level customer service. Owner Debbie Dunn (who also operates a local newspaper) treats every customer like they are family and is beyond knowledgeable about the Volcano area. She makes sure that each and every person receives a walking map on the Volcano area with numbered landmarks and points of historical interest. Dunn also gives her patrons great advice regarding the area, even when it comes to secret local fishing spots. Those who walk into the store may rave about her kindness and energy. This level of customer service unquestionable results in repeated return visitors and they appreciate her exceptional historical knowledge of the area. For that matter, who cannot love a business owner who truly supports local businesses?

Around the corner, sits the Union Billiard Saloon and Boarding House that opened in 1880 and was once the site of the Volcano Justice Court. Down the street, within walking distance is the famed George Hotel.

In 1862, B.F. George built the hotel on the site where a previous establishment known as the Eureka burned down in 1853, and the Empire Hotel, which burned down in 1859, today the establishment is known for its dining options and historical rooms with balconies that overlook the main roadway.

Volcano is also home to Black Chasm Caverns, a National Natural Landmark that are open seasonally for yours. The Volcano Theater Company was founded in 1854. The company conducts a full season each year, performing in both the 35-seat Cobblestone Theater and in the larger outdoor Volcano Amphitheater that is across the street.

The town is home to the Kneading Dough Organic Bakery as well as the Volcano Gallery with local art and more.

Daffodil Hill is up the street. This is a famed garden open each spring to the public at no cost for admission. Daffodils were first planted in the mid-19th century. Approximately 300,000 flowers are in bloom during the spring and thousands visit for a handful of weeks each year.

Regardless if your passing through, or make it a daytrip destination or overnight stay, Volcano is a gem in Amador well worth visiting. Stopping to take a trip back in time, a live performance, dinner or a just an ice-cold soda from California’s oldest store are a delight for all ages.

e has sold over 11 million albums. He is country music’s funny guy and he’s coming to our region. Brad Paisley is bound for Thunder WHEN:AUG. 3 Valley Casino in Lincoln for one night only WHERE: THUNDER VALLEY CASINO, on Friday, Aug. 3.

LINCOLN Paisley has earned three Grammy Awards, 14 Academy TICKETS: THUNDERVALLEYRESORT.COM of Country Music Awards, 14 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards and two American Music awards. He has earned one of the industry’s most prestigious honors by becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry and has become the iconic co-host of the annual CMA Awards.

Despite the many accolades, the 46-year-old continues to be one of the industry’s most approachable, witty and “guy next door” personalities.

For Paisley, his love of music came at a young age. Growing up in West Virginia, he was gifted his very first guitar when he was just 8 years old from his grandfather, Warren Jarvis. Jarvis taught the young Paisley how to play the instrument, which he recalls was a Sears Danelectro Silvertone. Two years later, he began performing to the public, singing at his church each week.

“Pretty soon I was performing at every Christmas party and Mother’s Day event,” Paisley said. “The neat thing

about a small town is that when you want to be an artist, they will make you one.”

As a kid, Paisley found himself performing at local school events, in front of the town Rotary clubs and more. Today, he performs before thousands and hasn’t forgotten his roots, including references to many of them in his music.

Today, Paisley is not only known for his dynamic performances and classy style in which he hosts country music’s highest profile awards show. He is known for his songwriting, something he admits is the stronger aspect of his music career “As a guitar player, it’s harder for me to impress somebody performing than it is to write a song they like”,” he said.

“You look out there and there’s people that, their day is changed because of your contribution to it.”

Paisley’s latest album is titled “Love and War.” The album was released in 2017 and it’s content headlines much of his live performances throughout his tour along with his greatest hits of the past. For Paisley, the newest album is a reflect of himself and the journey his music career has taken him on.

“This is an album for me that represents where I am at in my thinking in my life and my observations of the world we are living in. It’s also my attempt to sort of weave the usual way I make a record and collaborate way beyond my pay grade. Where I go and team up with some legends that I sort of have no business being in the same room with, let alone writing with. This record has been worthwhile for me. I feel like it is vintage me but also has the collaborations of a lifetime behind it.”

Throughout his career, Paisley has been known to interject key moments of his life from a child to an adult. These references are often common lifetime events that all of us experience between the day we are born to our final days. From being raised by a single parent to references to the iconic Pac-Man game, the internet, teenage shenanigans in a small town right up to experiencing love, marriage and coping with loss of loved ones that is best expressed in “Whiskey Lullaby” and “When I get where I am going.”

Today, Paisley’s debut single is still a fan favorite. The song is titled, “He didn’t have to be,” and it’s the story of growing up as a child of a single mother and being accepted her new love interests, something that doesn’t always happen easily for kids. Although it’s now 19-years-old, it’s still popular on the radio and in live performances.

“It doesn’t feel like it’s been anywhere near that long,” he said.

“

Since 2013, Paisley has co-hosted the CMA Awards alongside Carrie Underwood. The duo has nearly made a full-time job out of the honor and they are both known for hosting the shows with class, with and respect, even in the many jokes they have collaborated on surrounding world issues and politics.

“I love doing that show. We have control and creativity over what we do,” he said.

“It’s us, it’s what we write. We have a big say in what goes on. We’ve done it year after year and we are having fun with it. It’s no mean. We’re edgy, but we are never going to make fun of someone on their big night.”

As Paisley takes the stage in Lincoln on Aug. 3, look for his wit and talent to light up the Thunder Valley stage. At the same time, expect the unexpected as even America’s beloved songwriter and all around articulate “good guy” admits he makes mistakes on stage. When it happens, he doesn’t fret, he has fun with it. He is a self-proclaimed class clown and some of that comes out in every show he does.

“I do the mistake that you make when you play a song a lot. The kind of mistakes you make at the end of the tour singing songs that have been hits for a decade.

They are the kind of mistakes make you go, “what was that?” The interesting thing is that when it’s a hit, you can just point at the audience and it looks like you did it on purpose.”

“Playing live is about going for it, I can’t play the show the same way every night,” he adds. “I really need to be in a creative environment every night or I’ll go nuts. My manager accuses me of singing just long enough to get me to my next guitar solo, which is true.”

When it comes to his own music likes, Paisley admits he likes a bit everything including classical music, the blues as well as alternative rock.

“Allison Kraus is definitely my favorite singer that’s ever lived,” he said of the artist which he performed his edgy hit, “Whiskey Lullaby” with.

While Paisley will headline the Aug. 3 show, his opener is one of country musics rising talents as well. Northern California’s own Rachel Steele will take to the stage. Steele is fresh off her debut album “Stupid Love.” The duo is sure to entertain and tickets are likely to sell out fast.

The average number of grapes it takes to make a bottle of wine is 736. But that can vary widely depending on things like grape variety, condition when picked. For example, plump berries from rain or small ones from a dry growing season.

There are an estimated 49 million bubbles in a bottle of Champagne.

The largest cork tree in the world (the Whistler) is in Portugal. It averages over one ton of raw cork per harvest every nine years. That’s enough to cork 100,000 bottles.

Romans discovered that mixing lead with wine not only helped preserve wine, but also gave it a sweet taste and succulent texture. Chronic lead poisoning has often been cited as one of the causes of the decline of Rome.

The world’s oldest bottle of wine dates back to the year 325 and was found near the town of Speyer, Germany, inside one of two Roman sarcophaguses. It is on display at the town’s Historisches Museum der Pfalz Since wine tasting is essentially wine smelling, women tend to be better wine testers because women have a better sense of smell than men. ✶

The fun begins Oct. 6 with a family show, “Tomás and the Library Lady.” It’s a bilingual musical based on the true story of Tomás Rivera. Grammy Award-winner Aida Cuevas joins Mariachi Juvenil Tecalitlan in paying a loving tribute to the music of Mexico’s bestselling artist of all time, Juan Gabriel on Oct. 7. But make no mistake: the season will bear a notable New York accent.

“Some years, there are more Broadway tours on the road than others, and this is one of those seasons,” noted Harris Center Executive Director Dave Pier. “Such a rich selection of national Broadway tours plays very well to one of our core strengths — we’re a state-of-the-art venue that can present the big shows while retaining the intimacy of an 850-seat house.”

Indeed, for the Broadway lover, it will be a busy year, beginning in October with “A Night with Janis Joplin” and “Finding Neverland,” followed by “The Wizard of Oz” and “Jersey Boys” in January; “Kinky Boots” and “Evita” in February; “Spamalot” in March, in April “Legally Blonde — The Musical;” and the regional debut of “Something Rotten!” followed by “RAIN — A Tribute To The Beatles” rounding out the Broadway offerings in June 2019.

That said, there is far more to the Harris Center than Broadway.

SUMMERTIME IS CONCERT TIME

It’s the time of year: Summertime is music time.

There’s free summer concerts all over this area on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through July and August in Folsom, El Dorado Hills and surrounding areas. Yes, free and right here in your own backyard. No need to even plan.

Just head out the door after work, grab a quick dinner at one of the zillion places — including food trucks — to get some great food and wander over to your favorite venue. In El Dorado Hills, shows are on Thursday at Town Center at the amphitheater. In Folsom, there are three locations each week — Folsom City Lions Park, Historic District Amphitheater and at the Palladio.

Want a great way to finish off the annual Folsom Pro Rodeo events? Take a walk on the Johnny Cash Trail and end up at the Historic District Amphitheater on July 5 when Cash Prophets return to play the sounds of Johnny Cash. Things don’t get more Folsom than that.

Throw in a splash on the lake and it’s official: You did Folsom!

Those who know me know I love sun, summer, nice weather and music. In between showing homes and working with buyers and sellers, I enjoy spending time at these events. These events create such a sense of community. Even as El Dorado Hills, Folsom and surrounding areas continues to grow (a request for another column’s information), it just has a great feel and is a wonderful place to live.

And there’s no shortage of people who want to live here. If you are considering selling your

home, now is the time. And I say that frequently in this column. Check out these numbers.

In El Dorado Hills, in May 2018, there were only 188 homes for sale, down 32 percent from 276 in May 2017. Down 32 percent! Yet, there were 107 homes sold in El Dorado Hills in May. That was the third highest monthly total in last 36 months. Only August of 2017 (108 homes) and July of 2015 (110 homes) had more sales. Low inventory, high number of sales equals higher prices. The average sales price in El Dorado Hills in May only was more than $804,000, a 19 percent increase from May only in 2017. The number of homes sold through May 2018 is 369, a 29 percent increase compared to same period in 2017. Comparatively, Folsom numbers do not appear as staggering.

But let’s look at some key numbers.

Through May 2018, 378 homes have sold in Folsom; an increase of less than 5 percent compared to the same period last year. On the surface, not so amazing, but consider that May 2018 only had 120 homes for sale; down 31 percent from May 2017. Every month in 2018 but April, Folsom has had fewer homes for sale as compared to 2017. To sell more Folsom homes through May 2018 compared to May 2017 is quite a feat. People want to move to Folsom. And it shows in the price and days on market. Sold homes were on the market for an average of 25 days while average sold prices continue to climb to more than $565,000 in 2018. Now that’s something to sing about.
