or anyone tired of the same old Top 40 songs, their scope can be broadened at the 22nd annual California WorldFest.

And not only will there be music on seven stages, there will be more than 50 artists from around the globe, plus a full workshop and educational schedule.

More than 6,000 attendees per day are expected at the four-day festival.

The event will also feature daily yoga, family and kids activities, a variety of educational workshops, and an artisan marketplace.

WorldFest’s Global Indigenous People’s Village celebrates its 10th anniversary, offering attendees a journey into indigenous art, culture, and traditions. The village is meant as a tribute not only to the Nisenan tribes of the region, but to many influenced, diverse cultures.

ince the 1960s the Forsberg’s passion for racing has been a hobby and family affair that continues today.

Richard Forsberg started his racing career in 1968 with a hard top that he had helped his neighbor, Ralph Clay, work on growing up.

He spent a few years racing locally at the tracks in Auburn, Roseville and West Sacramento. In 1988, Grass Valley started a cast iron, 360ci division, Forsberg built his own 360ci and won the first night out on the track.

His son, Andy Forsberg, was born in 1976 and since he was a kid, he watched on the sidelines waiting for his time to start racing.

“I would always pester him that I wanted to drive someday, and he was always like ‘yeah, you can when you turn 16,’” Andy recalled. “We raced together for a couple of years, we would take turns in the same car.”

Taking turns racing took a toll on the father-and-son duo’s time on the track and Richard stepped aside in 1994 so that Andy could progress in his driving career. In 1997, Andy won his first career main event at the Placerville Speedway and beat two Placerville legends of the ‘90s, Ray Rust and Glen Boune.

Since then, Andy has won 163 feature events at 14 different tracks in California and one in Oregon. Andy has won races with the Golden State Challenge Series, Civil War Series, Northern Sprint Tour Series, Sprint Car Racing Association, Hanford Bandit Series and the Trophy Cup, and he is the only six-time Civil War Champion.

“We’ve done pretty good, we’re successful on the West Coast and in Northern California,” Andy said. “I’ve come to the realization that I’m not going to go big time; those days are gone but now we just try to have as much fun locally as possible.”

Racing does not come cheap though, while there have been hardships financially, they have been able to enjoy their time racing and their hobby of being on the tracks and with others.

Richard and Andy only work on their own sprint cars.

When Richard first started racing, he built everything himself. It gets expensive when the motors and parts give out or break during or after the races, so they try to take as much care of the sprint cars as possible.

While there is no further generation to take over when Andy retires from racing, the passion will probably still be there.

Currently, the 2018 racing season is half over. Races are held between late February and early November, typically on Fridays or Saturdays. To watch Andy race this summer or fall, visit forsbergracing92.com for a full schedule.

A passion for color

NANCY HAKALA SPECIALIZES IN MURAL PAINING STORY AND PHOTOS BY PAIGE SMITH

A

t five years old, Nancy Hakala and her siblings were woken up early one morning by her father to go on an early morning drive while on a vacation road trip.

They stopped near a large hill, each holding different breakfast items and started climbing up large rocks to get to the top of the hill.

“You could see so far, and the sun was coming up, it was just all of that beautiful early morning color,” Hakala reminisced. “Such expansive desert, the mountains were literally purple and were absolutely beautiful.”

Because of that, her passion for color, sunrises and sunsets are so much more than anything she could have imagined before. Reflecting on what she enjoyed most is what brought her passion to life and mesmerizing murals throughout the city and country.

She has painted murals in private homes and properties for various owners, in a plane hangar, on the floor of the Placer Nature Center and so much more.

The Placer Nature Center wanted an artist to create the Walking on Water project and called Hakala to design and paint the mural. The mural is a pathway that allows visitors and children to walk on the American River.

“You see all of the indigenous plants and animals; I did a lot of hiking to see the plants looking down rather than from the side,” Hakala said.

The outdoor mural in Oak Harbor, Washington, is the largest one she has painted at 53-feet wide and 17-feet high. It depicts the history of the town of Oak Harbor, with many stories in each, she smiled as she recalled the research and history that went into painting each part of the mural. This project took her seven weeks to complete.

One thing that she enjoys doing in murals is to leave hidden objects or important pieces to each mural for either a family or the public to see and find while viewing the mural.

At Neil Munro’s plane hangar at the Auburn Municipal Airport, Nancy was able to create a mural of all the planes Munro had flown throughout his life.

She researched each of them and was assisted by Elora Milby.

Out of all the projects she has completed, the one she is most proud of is a mural of local retired officer in the United States Air Force and triple ace of World War II, Clarence Emil “Bud” Anderson. This hidden gem of history is in Munro’s plane hangar and is a of Anderson in his P-51 Mustang “Old Crow.”

“It was an honor to have been asked to paint that mural of a World War II veteran,” Hakala said. “To me, I think the honor of it makes it special.”

Her passion for art and painting was ignited as a child and now all generations can enjoy her creations daily, whether it is at the Placer Nature Center, Oak Harbor, or elsewhere, the memories and stories told in each mural are ones that will last a lifetime.

“My mom taught me how to draw and taught me how to see,” Hakala recalled. “I learned this expression, ‘If you can see anything clearly, you can draw it.’”

HOST YOUR OWN OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT

chool’s out, the sun is staying up later and that summer weather is settling in. While there are many events happening this month in the foothills, some nights are just made for staying in and watching a movie with family or friends. To take that movie night to another level, consider creating your own outdoor movie theater right in your backyard. With the following helpful tips, you could be enjoying a relaxing night in at your own personal outdoor theater.

Projector When searching for the right projector, there are a few things to keep in mind: Brightness, resolution, projector audio and connectivity.

For brightness, find a projector that has 2,000 lumens or better. In most backyards, the light pollution coming in from street lights, neighbors’ homes or your own home will disrupt the visibility of a film projected onto a screen. A projector with more lumens will produce a brighter image, making it much easier to see.

The resolution of a video or film is crucial to most viewers. For many, a crisp, clear image makes the experience more enjoyable by allowing the viewer to see the details of each scene. For a high-quality of resolution, choose a projector in HD with 720p or 1080p.

Here’s a big time: find a projector with built-in speakers. A projector with

built-in speakers will play the sound from whatever device it is plugged into — when both devices are connected to an HDMI cable.

That brings us to the final important component of a projector: Connectivity. The most common and easiest to use is HDMI. For those who are unsure what that is, just ask anyone in the electronics department of a store like Target or Walmart.

Screen There are many options when it comes to screens; it all depends on how much you’re willing to pay, the quality you want and the space of your backyard. The most traditional backdrop to project a movie onto

outdoors is an outdoor movie screen.

These can be found at a store like Best Buy or on Amazon. If you have a flat, white surface such as the wall of the house or garage, it’s possible that could be used as a screen. The most simple DIY movie screen is a plain white sheet hung with rope or a built frame. If you choose this option, sew together two queen sheets and hang them with clothespins and rope. To keep it from rippling in the wind, wrap or sew the bottom of the sheet around a PVC pipe.

Another option is to ask invitees to bring a low-back lawn chair or their own blanket to sit on. Hay bales are a fun alternative to ordinary chairs and can be bought at any feed and supply store. Whatever you decide, make sure the priority is comfort. Not everyone enjoys sitting on the ground, but if there are blankets and pillows, not many can resist.

Snacks It’s not a movie without popcorn, right? Be sure to have plenty of popcorn in small bowls or paper bags for guests to munch on while watching the show. A simple sundae bar or make-your-own trail mix station are fun options to provide as well. Depending on your audience, a slushy-lemonade or fruit punch may do the trick — or a movie-themed cocktail or wine cooler.

Berr y good U-PICK FARM HAS THORNLESS BERRIES

P

icking blackberries usually means treading carefully to avoid the thorns. But at the Amber Oaks U-pick farm in Auburn, grower Tim Boughton has eliminated the scratch threat.

“We have grass between the rows that we mow and the berries are thornless so it is a very nice environment to pick the fruit,” Boughton said. “We get lots of families who bring out the kids.”

Blackberry season ramps up in mid-June and lasts through July. Typically the bushes are loaded with fruit.

“Our big crop is blackberries,” he said. “They are so sweet.

You can’t stop eating them.”

The U-pick days are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday by appointment, with flexible times depending on the weather.

Frequently Boughton schedules evening groups when the temperature soars into the 100-degree range.

He charges $4.50 a pound for the blackberries and furnishes containers.

For pre-picked berries, the cost $36 a flat (sometimes less, if there’s a bumper crop). There are discounts on volume sales.

Boughton grows several varieties, including a rare find — the Ronda berry, named after his wife.

“We had bought some raspberries in seedling containers,” he explained. “There was one plant that looked different from the others. We planted it behind the house and let it grow. It was really good, so I planted more. It doesn’t match anything I’ve seen. It’s similar to the thornless Chester blackberry. It ripens from back to front like a strawberry. It ripens early and lasts 10 weeks on the vine. I love that berry.

I have six 200-foot rows of that variety.”

Years ago, Amber Oaks was known for its raspberries and that’s actually how Boughton’s love of farming began — planting the first starts when he was only 8 years old.

He gradually planted more and over time there were as many as 15 acres of them.

But in recent years, his focus has shifted to other things, although he still maintains a small raspberry crop.

Boughton grew up on the land that he now farms — he owns nine acres and leases another 20.

He drew inspiration from his mother, a 4-H leader, and was growing and selling sugar beets when he was just 10 years old. He even earned an award that year for having the highest sugar content in the beets.

“That was in 1970 from Spreckels Sugar Company in Woodland,” he said. “I turned in the beets and they processed them and gave us the sugar. That was a big deal for me.”

During high school he helped out on the farm, which was owned by Keith and Shirley Anderson.

“They had cherry trees,” he said. “I helped manage (the orchard) and the farm.”

When the cherry trees began to die off, he replaced them with raspberries.

Boughton and his family still live on the property. He leases 20 acres from the Anderson family and owns another nine.

In total, he has worked the land for 47 years and grows 120 varieties of fruits and vegetables.

“The U-pick crops are mainly the thornless blackberries,” he said. “I have four or five acres of them. But the first U-pick crop to ripen is boysenberries, during late May and early June.”

Other U-pick crops are tomatoes, kiwi and chestnuts.

“We pick and sell lots of other stuff we grow,” he said.

He has booths at farmers markets in Tahoe City, South Lake Tahoe, Reno and San Rafael.

In 1989 he was one of the founding members of the Foothill Farmers Market and served on the board of directors for 12 years. He was also involved with the 49er Fruit Trail. The family is a familiar sight at the Old Town’s Country Christmas, roasting chestnuts.

These days, in addition to his many other farm products, he’s carrying on the tradition of hoshigaki.

“We dry Japanese candy persimmons,” Boughton said. “We do 1,200 of those every year. We dry them in November and they are ready to sell in December. We sell them until we run out.”

Boughton learned the ancient technique from neighboring farmer Roy Tanaka.

“I grew up with them and watched them do this stuff,” he said. “I ended up buying property from their kids after the Tanakas passed away. I continued hoshigaki after that.”

He also has a huge crop of rhubarb and lots of squash.

“The squash is ready, “ he said in mid-June.

“We also sell a lot of squash blossoms.”

And there’s a large kiwi crop in the fall.

“We let them get all the way ripe on the vine,” Boughton said. “They are nothing like what you will find at the store.

They are amazing because they have twice the sugar. We are selling the last ones now for this year. We pick them in November and put them in boxes in cold storage and they will last for a year.”

In the fall, Amber Oaks is a popular spot for school field trips.

“We do field trips every day in October,” Boughton said.

“We have quite a few Montessori schools that bring kids. We are usually sold out early. We talk about how to sow seeds and we do cuttings. I give a history of the farm. We walk around the farm and pick tomatoes and basil and I teach them how to prepare things.

We go through a four-acre kiwi vine maze. We go to the pumpkin patch and pick pumpkins and do a hayride back to the top where we started. We also pick up chestnuts in the orchard and roast them and eat them.”

Currently Boughton is working on remodeling the on-site fruit stand.

“We plan to open it again and sell produce on the farm,” he said.

The stand could be ready to open as early as this summer.

“We’re right at Mt. Vernon and Shanley, so it is a busy corner,” he said. “People really are very appreciative that we try to grow things naturally and have a really tasty product. It makes me feel really good about what I do.”

Fresh fish for the foothills

hen you buy that filleted piece of salmon at the farmers market, chances are that fish was swimming in the ocean just a day or so before.

Brand and Laura Little, owners of Little Fish Company, stress the freshness and quality of their product.

“We source sustainable, wild-caught fish,” Brand Little said. “No farmed fish. It’s all ocean caught. We get it to the farmers market in 24 hours from the time it is caught. It is really high-end seafood.”

The Littles sell their catch at the farmers markets in Auburn, Nevada City, Placerville, Tahoe City, Truckee, Roseville and Sacramento.

Their boat trolls waters up and down the Northern California coast. In addition, the Littles purchase from other fishermen.

Little grew up in Northern California and moved to Colorado when he was in high school. He worked in the dairy business there. When he returned to Northern California, he worked for the Associated Press in its advertising division.

But fishing was something he had always loved.

“I fished and hunted with my dad from an early age,” he said. “I always liked the outdoors.”

That’s why, in 2004, he took advantage of an opportunity to purchase a commercial fishing boat.

He had never fished on the ocean before, but he had built up a lot of vacation time and used it drifting on the Pacific, fishing pole in hand.

At first, he sold his catch to brokers but soon decided to switch to direct selling at farmers markets.

“By 2007, it had really taken off,” he said. “At that point, I bought a larger boat and then in 2011, upgraded again. ” He recently purchased his latest boat, the Kvins.

In 2015, he bought a second boat that had a crab permit.

Since then, he has moved the crab permit to his main boat and sold the other one.

In addition to crab, Little has permits for salmon, halibut, black cod, rock cod, ling cod and albacore tuna.

“That’s what we fish for off my boat,” he said. “We source prawns, scallops and other things we don’t have permits for from other boats.”

The catch varies by season and the weather.

“Salmon is predominantly May through October. Dungeness crab is November to April,” he said. “Those are our two best sellers. Other stuff mixes in.”

His fishing trips last from one to five days.

“We come back in and take the freshest fish we have and that’s what we bring to the farmers markets,” he said.

“We catch a lot more than we can sell, so we also sell to brokers.”

The crab is held in tanks on the boat. The salmon and halibut are hook and line caught.

“We bring them into the boat, and they are gilled, gutted, pressure bled and packed on ice within 10 minutes,” he said.

“From there, it is back to the dock and into our refrigerator truck. Everything is cut and packaged in San Francisco.”

Black cod is a trap-caught fish.

“We fish traps for those off the edge of the continental shelf where the water is a half-mile to a mile deep,” he said.

“Those are way out. From San Francisco, it is about 40 miles out. Going out of San Francisco, (the water is) about 100 feet deep, 30 miles out it is 200 to 300 feet deep. When when you get to the edge of the shelf, it drops to 2,000 to 3,000 feet. Along the edge is where you find those black cod. It is literally like the grand canyon.”

In the earlier years, Little’s focus was salmon. But times have changed.

“When we first started, we were selling them at $15 a pound. Now we are at $45,” he explained. “We’ve had to find and source other fish because people can no longer afford (salmon).”

Availability drives the price and there are fewer and fewer salmon.

Little encourages his customers to try other fish and to pay attention to what they are buying.

“There are lots of other fresh fish,” he said. “Be aware and ask questions whenever you buy it. If you aren’t paying a premium price for a fish, it’s not wild caught.”

That’s because the boats that catch the fish can get premium prices from brokers on the dock and are not going to sell it for less at local markets, he added. If a piece of fish seems to be a bargain price, it is because it was farm raised.

He also encourages customers to pre-order at his website.

“We sell out of everything,” he said. “Reserve it ahead of time and it will be there waiting for you with your name on it. We’ll weigh it for the exact cost and give you a discount as well.”

After nearly 15 years in the business, Little’s love of fishing has not waned.

“I still love the thrill of the catch,” he said. “It is the competition out there. People watch some of those fishing shows and see how it is done. They are competing for bragging rights. It is the same for me and the crew. We want to be the top boat. It’s a very competitive environment. … It is hard work. During crab season our boat doesn’t stop moving for literally a week. It is 20-hour days. We will come back and unload the boat and go out again — constantly moving from one site to the next. You do it because you love it.”

Spicy grilled salmon FOR SUMMER NIGHTS

ummer barbecues can be more than just burgers and dogs. Throwing a few filets of marinated salmon on the grill is a delicious alternative to more traditional main dishes. And this spicy, tangy marinade really brings out the rich flavor of the fish.

Grilled fish is one of the healthiest ways to cook fish. The healthy fats in salmon hold up well on the grill without the added butter when cooked in a frying pan. Some types of fish that handle a grill better than others. The best fish to grill are swordfish, halibut, tuna and salmon. When the fish is on the barbecue, be sure to let it cook several minutes before trying to lift it off the grill or it will stick. Once the fish starts to release some of its juices, check for color and flip the fish when grill marks begin forming. If the fillets are thin and even in the cut, they may not require flipping.

This will also depend on your desired level of doneness.

It’s easy to overcook fish because it cooks so quickly, so be sure to watch it carefully. When fully cooked, the fillet will begin to flake and break open easily, changing in color from translucent to opaque.

Finding fresh, quality fish is the best place to start. Fresh fish should be stored on ice in the display counter and well drained so that water doesn’t pool around it. I picked up a few filets of salmon at a local fish market for this recipe, and it made a big difference from the store-bought or frozen salmon. This marinade is flavorful, but not overpowering, so the taste of that melt-in-your-mouth salmon still comes through just perfectly.

The recipe can easily be modified for desired spice level, too, depending on your heat tolerance. The current spice level is about a two out of five, so if you want to kick it up a few notches, go right ahead.

Although it only calls for a 30-minute marinade, it can be left to soak up all those flavors for much longer — even overnight. But at minimum, it should be marinated for the required 30 minutes.

This full-flavored recipe pairs well with a vegetable like broccoli and a hearty side of wild rice or pasta. A chilled pinot noir or viognier pair nicely with the grilled salmon, and if possible, I’d recommend eating it on the back porch in the cool of the evening.

The fair is back in town

FUN AT ‘CALIFORNIA’S MOST BEAUTIFUL FAIRGROUNDS’

otton candy, gold panning and monster trucks. The annual Nevada County Fair is coming back to town this Aug. 8 to 12, bringing back its famous carnival rides, “Treat Street” and musical entertainment.

This year the fair will bring in new features as well, including goat yoga, virtual reality and a pogo stunt team.

“We’re known as California’s most beautiful fairgrounds,” Wendy Oaks, information officer for Nevada City Fairgrounds, said. “It’s very hometown and it’s very safe.”

Each night of the fair there will be arena events as well. Wednesday night there will be Flying U Extreme Rodeo and Thursday the All Star American Pulling will preform.

Friday and Saturday All Star Monster Trucks, Stock and Modified Tough Truck

Racing will perform and Sunday night the Destruction Derby will take place.

Three stages around the fairgrounds will hold live music throughout each day. The schedule of musical acts and times is on the Nevada County website.

There will be food contests, horse demonstrations, a barn full of livestock and 7,000 exhibits. There are also several events throughout each day of the fair, including Karaoke, crafts and “Minute to win it.”

Oaks said the most unique part of the fair is the “Treat Street.”

“Treat Street” is full of summer fair favorites including pasties, tacos, corn on the cob, cotton candy and much more.

“Treat Street” is comprised of local nonprofit organizations that sell and serve treats and snacks at the fair.

Thirty nonprofits participate in “Treat

Street,” including the Kiwanis, Girl Scouts, Nevada County Jewish Community Center and the Fire Department.

“Last year more than $1 million was raised on treat street,” Oaks said.

Free parking and shuttle service from Nevada Union High School is available Wednesday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Gold Country Stage will also provide a Grass Valley shuttle bus to and from the fair.

Tickets are available for purchase online at the Nevada County website or in person at the Fairgrounds office off McCourtney Road. They can also be reached at 530-673-6217.

Advance ticket prices are $7 a day and tickets at the door are $9 a day.

Admission for children under 5 is free. Tickets to the carnival and arena shows are sold separately.

TREAT STREET AT THE NEVADA COUNTY FAIR

What is your favorite part of the Nevada County Fair?

We often ask this question and there is a common answer — Treat Street!

Whether it’s a delicious plate of nachos, a traditional pasty, a loaded baked potato, a hot corn dog, a cold beer, a smoked turkey leg, a slice of savory strawberry shortcake, fresh corn on the cob, or one of many other delicious treats, it can be found on Treat Street.

There are 30 booths on Nevada County Fair’s Treat Street and each one represents a local nonprofit service organization. Treat Street goodies are not only delicious, but they are also good for the community!

Formerly known as “Food Alley,” Treat Street obtained its current name in 1972 after a community contest seeking a new name.

At the 2017 Nevada County Fair, more than $1 million was generated on Treat Street, which supports these local nonprofits in providing vital services to the community.

At the Nevada County Jewish Community Center booth, 1,200 bagels, 100 pounds of lox and 100 pounds of cream cheese were served.

Ten thousand tacos, made with 2,000 pounds of beef, were served from the Lions Club of Nevada City booth.

The Job’s Daughter Corn Dog booth serves between 15,000 – 19,000 corn dogs per Fair.

In 2017, the Rough and Ready Volunteer Fire Department’s booth sold almost 4 tons of potatoes.

The Northern Mines Girl Scout Slushie booth uses more than 600 pounds of ice each year and it takes 125 volunteers to run the booth.

The Watt Park Fire Department’s ice cream booth on Treat Street serves 17,000 cones during the Fair.

Last year, 550 pounds of oak-smoked tri-trip were served to more than 1,000 customers from the SEED booth on South Treat Street.

ast month for the Endurance Capital of the World and runners near and far was Western States 100. This month, it’s Tevis Cup’s turn to take to the Western States trail.

Around 200 horses and riders will take on the 100-mile race from Squaw Valley to Auburn. Last year, the weather was cool with a bit a of rain and 56 percent of entrants finished the race. That’s about typical, generally 50 percent will finish the race.

It begins at Robie Equestrian park at 7,000 feet elevation south of Truckee goes through rugged miles of ascending and descending before reaching Old Town Auburn.

“Due to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the trail, the Tevis Cup Ride differs substantially from other organized endurance riding events,” says the Tevis Cup website.

“Adequate physical training and preparation for both horse and rider are of the utmost importance. The mountains,

although beautiful, are relentless in their challenge and unforgiving to the ill-prepared.”

Cougar Rock could be one of the most daunting parts of the trail. The rock is a volcanic outcropping between the Lion Ridge and Red Ridge points on the trail.

“Most problems occur when the rider allows the horse to stop and think about it,” the website says and offers these tips: “Stay forward and light in the saddle, but not restrictive, contact on his mouth and most importantly — keep your horse moving forward to the top! If the lines are too long at the base of Cougar Rock or you would simply rather not, there is a narrow bypass trail to the right.”

By taking the bypass, however, riders who do so are missing a great photo opportunity.

In order to qualify for this endurance race, riders must have completed 300 miles of rides by approved organizations that were at least 50 miles each or longer. The other way in is if the rider has ridden the Western States Trail Ride previously. The horse must also be at least 6 years old.

Along the trail, there are check points with veterinarians who ensure horses are fit to continue on. A total of about 20 veterinarians and 800 volunteers are on hand during the race.

BRAD PAISLEY BRINGS FAMED TALENT, WIT TO THUNDER VALLEY

H

e has sold over 11 million albums. He is country music’s funny guy and he’s coming to our region. Brad Paisley is bound for Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln for one night only on Friday, Aug. 3.

Paisley has earned three Grammy Awards, 14 Academy of Country Music Awards, 14 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards and two American Music awards. He has earned one of the industry’s most prestigious honors by becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry and has become the iconic co-host of the annual CMA Awards. Despite the many accolades, the 46-year-old continues to be one of the industry’s most approachable, witty and “guy next door” personalities.

For Paisley, his love of music came at a young age.

Growing up in West Virginia, he was gifted his very first guitar when he was just 8 years old from his grandfather, Warren Jarvis. Jarvis taught the young Paisley how to play the instrument, which he recalls was a Sears Danelectro Silvertone. Two years later, he began performing to the public, singing at his church each week.

“Pretty soon I was performing at every Christmas party and Mother’s Day event,” Paisley said. “The neat thing about a small town is that when you want to be an artist, they will make you one.”

As a kid, Paisley found himself performing at local school events, in front of the town Rotary clubs and more. Today, he performs before thousands and hasn’t forgotten his roots, including references to many of them in his music.

Today, Paisley is not only known for his dynamic performances and classy style in which he hosts country music’s highest profile awards show. He is known for his songwriting, something he admits is the stronger aspect of his music career.

“As a guitar player, it’s harder for me to impress somebody performing than it is to write a song they like”,” he said. “You look out there and there’s people that, their day is changed because of your contribution to it.”

Paisley’s latest album is titled “Love and War.” The album was released in 2017 and it’s content headlines much of his live performances throughout his tour along with his greatest hits of the past. For Paisley, the newest album is a reflect of himself and the journey his music career has taken him on.

“This is an album for me that represents where I am at in my thinking in my life and my observations of the world we are living in. It’s also my attempt to sort of weave the usual way I make a record and collaborate way beyond my pay grade. Where I go and team up with some legends that I sort of have no business being in the same room with, let alone writing with. This record has been worthwhile for me. I feel like it is vintage me but also has the collaborations of a lifetime behind it.”

Throughout his career, Paisley has been known to interject key moments of his life from a child to an adult. These references are often common lifetime events that all of us experience between the day we are born to our final days. From being raised by a single parent to references to the iconic PacMan game, the internet, teenage shenanigans in a small town right up to experiencing love, marriage and coping with loss of loved ones that is best expressed in “Whiskey Lullaby” and “When I get where I am going.”

Today, Paisley’s debut single is still a fan favorite. The song is titled, “He didn’t have to be,” and it’s the story of growing up as a child of a single mother and being accepted her new love interests, something that doesn’t always happen easily for kids. Although it’s now 19-years-old, it’s still popular on the radio and in live performances.

“It doesn’t feel like it’s been anywhere near that long,” he said.

Since 2013, Paisley has co-hosted the CMA Awards alongside Carrie Underwood. The duo has nearly made a full-time job out of the honor and they are both known for hosting the shows with class, with and respect, even in the

many jokes they have collaborated on surrounding world issues and politics.

“I love doing that show. We have control and creativity over what we do,” he said.

“It’s us, it’s what we write. We have a big say in what goes on. We’ve done it year after year and we are having fun with it. It’s no mean. We’re edgy, but we are never going to make fun of someone on their big night.”

As Paisley takes the stage in Lincoln on Aug. 3, look for his wit and talent to light up the Thunder Valley stage. At the same time, expect the unexpected as even America’s beloved songwriter and all around articulate “good guy” admits he makes mistakes on stage. When it happens, he doesn’t fret, he has fun with it. He is a self-proclaimed class clown and some of that comes out in every show he does.

“I do the mistake that you make when you play a song a lot. The kind of mistakes you make at the end of the tour singing songs that have been hits for a decade. They are the kind of mistakes make you go, “what was that?” The interesting thing is that when it’s a hit, you can just point at the audience and it looks like you did it on purpose.”

“Playing live is about going for it, I can’t play the show the same way every night,” he adds. “I really need to be in a creative environment every night or I’ll go nuts. My manager accuses me of singing just long enough to get me to my next guitar solo, which is true.”

When it comes to his own music likes, Paisley admits he likes a bit everything including classical music, the blues as well as alternative rock.

“Allison Kraus is definitely my favorite singer that’s ever lived,” he said of the artist which he performed his edgy hit, “Whiskey Lullaby” with.

While Paisley will headline the Aug. 3 show, his opener is one of country musics rising talents as well. Northern California’s own Rachel Steele will take to the stage. Steele is fresh off her debut album “Stupid Love.” The duo is sure to entertain and tickets are likely to sell out fast.
