This year The Palm Springs Public Library’s Summer Reading program’s theme for this year is “Reading Takes You Everywhere” and the weekly programs, entertainers, films and crafts are all focused on that theme. Offering something for everyone in the family, there is a program for every age group; Youth: Pre-K – 5th grade, Teens: 6th – 12th grade, and even adults! Back by popular demand, we are excited to be giving away FREE books each week, with the support of the Friends of the Palm Springs Library. Students that are registered and check-in weekly at the Library will receive a FREE new book (grade level/ age specific) and the adults who check-in will receive a voucher for a FREE gentlyused book (up to $2 in value) from the Friends of the Palm Springs Library book sale shelves. Everyone will also have the opportunity to complete the five book challenge and a library scavenger hunt courtesy of Escape Room Palm Springs. And as an extra encouragement the grand prize this year is your choice! take a hike seven great trails
H
iking the Coachella Valley means waterfalls, sand dunes, oasis, wildflowers and breathtaking views. Depending on the time of the year, there is something for everyone, from strenuous and difficult to moderate and easy. Whether it’s Joshua Tree National Park, the trails above the Tram, Indian Canyons, numerous preserves, the Mecca Hills, or the hundreds of miles of trails along the desert cities, people are flocking to catch a bit of the outdoors. Here are seven of the popular hikes, all with trailheads within a few minutes of the desert cities. South Lykken Trail 4.4 miles with an elevation of just over 1,000 feet. This is considered strenuous and the north end of the trail starts at the west end of Mesquite Road, just south of downtown Palm Springs off South Palm Canyon Drive. There is no parking at the trailhead, but street parking is available. The hike is pretty strenuous for the first mile or so and then it levels off and one gets a great view of the Indian Canyons golf courses and South Palm Canyon communities. It is a beautiful hike and ends along South Palm Canyon Drive towards Indian Canyon. You will need to have vehicles at both ends. Museum Trail 2 miles round trip with an elevation change of around 1,000 feet. This hike is quite strenuous because of the rapid incline. The trailhead is just behind the museum off Palm Canyon Drive in Downtown Palm Springs. Turn around at the picnic tables. Clara Burgess Trail 4.4 miles round trip with an elevation of 1,339 feet. The trail is the only route to the summit of Murray Hill, a prominent conical peak just south of Palm Springs. It is best seen when heading south on Gene Autry Trail and, although it is only a couple miles to the peak, it is strenuous with a steep incline.

Randall Henderson Trail 2.4 mile loop with a gently rising elevation change of 423 feet. This easy trail offers a good introduction to desert hiking for the novice. It starts and ends at the National Monument Visitor Center in Palm Desert on Highway 74. Bear Creek Oasis Trail 8 miles in and out, with an elevation rise of 1,989 feet. Considered strenuous. From the Cove Oasis trailhead at the top of La Quinta Cove, follow Bear Creek Canyon to where the trail leaves the sandy wash. Follow the signs. Hikers on this trail enjoy the beautiful palm oasis at the end. Eisenhower Peak Loop 6 mile loop with an elevation gain of 700 feet. This trail is considered moderate and is part of the Living Desert preserve (admission fee required) in Palm Desert. The trail begins at the Eastern edge of the Living Desert and takes hikers toward Eisenhower Peak. The trail is a good representation of desert terrain and makes a perfect beginning to a Living Desert tour. There are several wonderful and easier trails in this area, including Garstin, Shannon, Araby (this trail goes up behind the Bob Hope home), Berns, Henderson and Goat Trails. These trails are all connected at various points and make for a great network of hiking trails. The best advice before heading towards this area is to get a map and experience the easier trails first before heading too far into the mountains.

Ten Things You Should Bring on Every Hike 1. Appropriate footwear. For a short day hike that doesn’t involve a heavy pack or technical terrain, trail shoes are great. For longer hikes, carrying heavier loads, or more technical terrain, hiking boots offer more support. 2. Map and compass/GPS. A map and compass not only tell you where you are and how far you have to go, it can help you find campsites, water, and an emergency exit route in case of an accident. While GPS units are very useful, always carry a map and compass as a backup. 3. Extra water and a way to purify it. Without enough water, your body’s muscles and organs simply can’t perform as well. Consuming too little water will not only make you thirsty but susceptible to hypothermia and altitude sickness. 4. Extra food. Any number of things could keep you out longer than expected: getting lost, enjoying the time, an injury, or difficult terrain. Extra food will help keep up energy. 5. Extra clothing. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to changing weather and activity levels. Two rules: avoid cotton (it keeps moisture close to your skin) and always carry a hat. 6. Safety items: fire, light, and a whistle. Fires are a great way to signal for help if you get lost. If lost, you’ll also want the whistle as it is more effective than using your voice to call for help (use 3 short bursts). And just in case you’re out later than planned, a flashlight is a must-have item to see your map and where you’re walking. 7. First aid kit. Prepackaged first-aid kits for hikers are available at any outfitter. 8. Knife or multi-purpose tool. These enable you to cut strips of cloth into bandages, remove splinters, fix broken eyeglasses, and perform a whole host of repairs on malfunctioning gear. 9. Sunscreen and sunglasses. Especially above treeline when there is a skin-scorching sun, you’ll need sunglasses to protect your eyes and sunscreen to prevent sunburn. 10. Daypack/backpack. You’ll want something you can carry comfortably and has the features designed to keep you hiking smartly. Keep the essentials in the pack and you’ll always be ready to hit the trail safely. BONUS: Trash Bag. This 11th piece of gear is essential to making sure that the trails you love stay beautiful for generations to come.
