Its many programs and services have kept it at the forefront and Auburn Journal readers have voted it as the Best of the Best in gyms and kids’ fitness. The club’s support to the community includes a Well-Fit program with a personal trainer for individuals recovering from cancer. “A loved one or significant other may accompany the person going through this battle,” club owner Jack Drimmer said. “It is a free program and someone battling cancer can do two 10-week programs free of charge. It has been noted that there is a 30 percent higher survival rate for those who exercise while fighting this awful disease.” The club also offers a scholarship program for local high school juniors and seniors to introduce them to the benefits of health and fitness. The students who complete all the requirements in the four-month, October-through-January sessions and writes the best essay communicating what the benefits of health and fitness mean to him or her — and what they will do to spread the word

ebi McReynolds-Cook, stylist and owner of The Vineyard Salon, purchased the business in 2012. She had worked at the establishment previously when it was called Jay Vanti. When it became available to buy, McReynolds-Cook was intrigued by the property and the potential of owning her own salon and thus The Vineyard Salon was born. McReynolds-Cook said her business has always been open to supporting the local community. “We’ve held fundraisers at the salon on several occasions and our staff is known for donating to many community events and fundraisers,” she said. The staff at The Vineyard Salon is highly qualified. “We started with very few and steadily grew to the perfect combination of talented and successful service providers,” said McReynolds-Cook. “We are a salon family that truly

loves and supports each other.” While there are many salons to choose from in the local community, McReynolds said The Vineyard offers one of the most comfortable and family-friendly atmospheres with exceptional service. Initially the club had 12 tennis courts, six racquetball courts, and 1,200 square feet fitness space with one 20 by 50-foot swimming pool. Today the club offers over 15,000 square feet of fitness facilities, two six-lane, 25-yard competition swimming pools, a warm rehabilitation pool, a wading pool for toddlers and a splash park for children, all while maintaining enough tennis and racquetball courts to meet the demand of the club’s remaining racquetball sports members. As testament to that, Auburn Racquet Club has won Best of the Best for seven years in a row and one year won Best Overall Business. “I’m very proud as a business owner to receive this award,” Drimmer said. “ I’m also very proud to be associated with my team. They give 100 percent effort every day to our members and customers, which results in the winning of these awards.”

Maki Heating & Air has been voted once again by Auburn Journal readers as best heating and air company for 2018. Debbie and Kyle Dahl purchased Maki Heating & Air from founders Randy and Cheryl Maki in March. “We have always wanted to buy Maki,” the Dahls said. “Thirteen years ago, I told Randy and Cheryl that we wanted to buy the place. We’ve been in HVAC for over 25 years and as a native of Auburn, I couldn’t wait to work where I live.” Supporting the community has been a hallmark of Maki and the Dahls are carrying on that legacy. “We support all ARD, PCSO, Boys & Girls Club
and every local event we can,” they said. The Dahls attribute the company’s success and what sets it apart from others in the industry is their work ethic in serving the Gold Country areas. “We provide service 24/7 and do not extend ourselves too far from our areas of service so that we can provide, fast service to our communities,” the Dahls said. Harvey, an 11-year attorney, started as corporate counsel for a technology company in Roseville and handled all corporate and employment law matters. After almost five years there Harvey decided she wanted to start a firm in her local community. A native to the Sierra Foothills, growing up in Meadow Vista, attending Colfax High School, ultimately getting her law degree from McGeorge School of Law and moving back to the area with her husband to start a family which now consists of two energetic boys, Harvey thought Auburn was the perfect spot to start a business.

ax’s Deli and Catering on 11960 Heritage M Oak Place is this year’s Best Deli award winner, an achievement for owner Max Berkowitz
who picked up the business on a fluke in 1993. “I bought the place completely by accident,” he said. “I had no intention of running a deli.” After several years of odd jobs in Santa Barbara in the early ‘90s, Berkowitz “got the itch” to open a business. His father, who was living in Auburn, alerted him to a recently closed deli and yogurt shop, and encouraged the young man to contact the owners. When he learned they were asking $90,000, Berkowitz halfheartedly offered $10,000, knowing he would be turned down. “They accepted my offer and the rest is history,” he said. “I’ve been in the business 25 years.” Despite the unusual backstory, running a

homas Sheriff is the owner of North Fork Veterinary Clinic. Sheriff and his wife, Sue, opened the business in 1984. “I started off working in a kennel in high school,” Sheriff said. “That’s when I realized I loved working with animals and wanted to pursue being a veterinarian.” North Fork Veterinary provides the local community with quality veterinary medicine. A variety of services are offered including puppy and kitten wellness exams, dental cleaning, flea and tick preventatives, surgery, microchip, toenail trims and more. Dog and cat boarding is also available with indoor dog runs in climate-controlled environments. When asked what has made his business successful, Sheriff said his staff makes all the difference. “ They are compassionate, hard-working and
dedicated,” he said. “We would not be here without them.” Some clients of North Fork Veterinary have been with the business for more than 30 years. Sheriff said their loyalty and trust has also contributed to the overall success of the business. Echo Valley Ranch has been voted Best of the Best for tack and feed. It’s not the first win, and likely not the last. “It’s always a surprise,” said Connie Watson, Echo Valley manager. “It’s something we appreciate every time.” The award can be attributed to the impressive stock of feed and products for livestock and pets, among many other things – and for excellent customer service. “Prices are competitive and often lower than big box stores,” Watson said. The staff is good at listening to its customers, and is dedicated to providing them with whatever they need. And if what they need is not on hand, the staff will surely find a way to get it. “We genuinely care about what we do,” said Watson. “We’re really positive people and we impart positivity on our crew.”

I first won in 2005 and I have the awards proudly displayed in my store,” Weidemann said. ith over 30 years of business, Twin Dragon Restaurant has been voted as the Best of the Best. “We always wanted to own our own restaurant so we could serve good Chinese food,” said owners Ling and Quinn Liu. After working in various restaurants that didn’t serve quality food, the Liu’s decided they wanted to open a restaurant with good food. They wanted to avoid “monosodium glutamate” or MSG, which is used as a taste enhancer in many dishes. They have a “No MSG” symbol on the door of their restaurant letting customers know they are getting quality food. That means we use the best ingredients we can get,” they said. “All of our dishes are prepared fresh in our own kitchen for each individual order.” When asked how they felt about winning the best Asian restaurant, they had a simple answer. “If you define winning as being proud to serve the best quality food, then we feel good about winning,” said the Liu’s. aria Moreno never thought she would be where she is now when she immigrated to the United States from Mexico in 1969, but her family has been her inspiration throughout the journey. Moreno, 57, is the owner of Maria’s Mexican Tacos on Bowman Road. She started the business in 2000 after buying a trailer in Sacramento. She used the trailer to sell her now-famous tacos on the side of Luther and Bowman roads for six months before moving to her current location. “My business was doing better and better and … people kept telling me I needed a kitchen,” Moreno said. Auburn resident Ed McCarthy, who said he goes to the restaurant once a week, said the laid-back atmosphere

and Maria Moreno’s caring nature make for a great dining experience. “It’s relaxing,” McCarthy said. “We just sit back and talk, and it’s a nice place to hang out. She always comes out and just chats with us for a few minutes.” Moreno also uses her business as a platform to help raise money for others. For example she has donated profits to a Haitian orphanage and earthquake victims in Japan. Maria’s Mexican Tacos was voted 2018’s best Mexican restaurant by Auburn Journal readers.

es Schwab on Highway 49 is the voter’s choice in the Auburn Journal Best of the Best rankings for retail tire centers. We’re speaking from our own experience.” Victory Velo is a spacious shop on Lincoln Way packed with all types of bikes, from the slimmest racer to the most rugged mountain bike. Owned by Dan Tebbs, Victory Velo services every kind of bicycle and takes pride in providing personalized service. By riding constantly and testing new products, the team stays up on the latest trends. One that’s emerging now: “bikepacking,” in which riders take enough camping gear to spend a night or two — or three — in the backcountry. “You can head out and get lost in the woods, all on your bike,” Chilton said. time biking and camping. Shop employees are also eager to talk about a particular product or suggest a local route for biking. The inventory is constantly being updated, as style and tastes change. Currently, there seems to be a surging interest in mountain biking. But someone interested in mountain biking may very well switch in a year or two and take up street biking. “People are constantly flipping back and forth,” Chilton said. And everyone is welcome to join team Victory Velo on weekly trail and street rides, typically departing from the shop. (Check directly with the shop for times and routes.) The employees enjoy sharing ideas and tales of bike riding. “The fact that we all ride and love it makes a difference,” said Jordan Hartman, a shop employee. “It feels great to help people out.”

he Kids’ Place has been in business for more than 30 years. Jess Garofalo, or Miss Jess as the kids call her, started as a parent in 2003 when her oldest son needed preschool. In August of 2008, Jess started working at the preschool and has been a familiar face in the community ever since. She took over as director in 2016 and just recently purchased the business in May. Both her and her husband, Tony, have already put in countless hours making improvements to the school and giving it an updated look. Miss Jess believes that The Kids’ Place is different from other schools because the staff and children really are a big family. “I love my job and I think I’m good at what I do,” Garofalo said. “My goal is to make a difference in as many lives as I can.” At The Kids’ Place, Miss Jess cares for the

children as if they were her own. She has plenty of experience given she has her own six children. Jess was introduced to her youngest two boys through her work at the preschool. They were in the foster system and she didn’t want them to have to keep changing homes so she and her husband adopted them. Family is important to her and she strives to give that sense of home to all of her students. “The kids know that they are loved and safe when they are with us,” she said. “As a parent, you couldn’t ask for anything more.”

ho is Seniors First? Founded in 1971, Seniors First is a federally recognized W social service nonprofit that provides several programs for elders and their families in our communities. The Auburn-based nonprofit provides services for around 1,000 seniors a month and is growing steadily. Yet, unless you have needed them, you may not have heard of them. Most known for Meals on Wheels, Seniors First currently delivers over 400 hot meals per day. “It’s more than just meals,” said Senior Nutrition Manager Dawn Marie Pesola, “we provide daily interaction and help relieve food insecurity for our clients in other ways.” Daily interaction that has literally saved lives. “When a volunteer knocks the door of a client we expect to be home and there’s no response,
assistance to at least three seniors — just in the nick of time. Other programs include MyRides which provides volunteer transport for medical appoint-
