OF THE FOLSOM TELEGRAPH

C

elebrating its 58th year, this year’s Folsom Pro Rodeo will offer a high dose of non-stop action to thrill all ages — from patriotic tributes to bucking bulls and mutton busting. All of which is capped off with fireworks on June 30, July 1 and July 3 along with nearly a week’s worth of events surrounding the event this year. In addition to the traditional rodeo entertainment, this year’s pro rodeo event will feature high-flying motocross, live music and much anticipated new features such as “The Ring of Fire.” From the time the gates open each night, this event is a celebration of America as fans will struggle to stay dry-eyed with patriotic fanfare in celebration of Independence Day. The patriotism continues from beginning to end, right down to the colorful fireworks that will light up the sky. The Flying Cowboys, motocross experts, will test the limit of the arena by flying as high as possible with flips and turns. Traditional rodeo events which will churn up the small, but action-packed arena include bull riding, bronc riding, barrel racing and more. Five-and sixyear-old cowboys and cowgirls will do their best to cling on woolly sheep in the mutton busting competition. When

8

it comes to viewing the Rodeo at Dan Russell Arena, there isn’t a bad seat in the house as fans are up close to the action with nearly every ticket. This year, the Folsom Pro Rodeo is part of a full patriotic week of celebration in the city of Folsom. It all begins on Friday, June 29, with the Folsom Family Round Up. This is an event where everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the shade at the Folsom Lions City Park for a free event featuring up-close and personal fun with the stars of the Folsom Pro Rodeo, both two-legged and four. The event features fun and games for all, along with food vendors, live music and more. On Saturday, June 30, the Folsom Historic District is bringing patriotism back to Sutter Street with a good old fashioned “Folsom’s Hometown Parade.” Taking to the street at 9:30 a.m., this event will bring the red white and blue to the heart of Folsom. While it’s being presented by the Folsom Historic District, a collaboration between the FHDA, the Chamber of Commerce and Folsom residents is ensuring this new feature will celebrate patriotism, heritage and act as a great celebration to kick off the Folsom Pro Rodeo in the community. Saturday night, Dan Russell Arena

comes to life with the gates opening at 6 p.m. Rodeo action begins at 7:30 p.m. to give fans time to find their seats and enjoy the food and beverages found in the Cool Down Corral before all the action they don’t want to miss begins. Just as the fireworks conclude each night the party continues as the Folsom Diesel Works Saloon Under the Stars will heat up with dance music nightly starting at 9:45 p.m. Admittance to the saloon is free for rodeo fans. Pro Rodeo action will continue on Sunday night, July 1, and Tuesday, July 3, this year. So, what happens on Monday night July 2? With the mid-week holiday, the Folsom Chamber of Commerce has gone to work to bring a special new night to the Folsom Pro Rodeo. Monday night will bring the Northern California Junior Rodeo Association to Dan Russell Arena. This event will feature free admission as the rodeo stars of the future strut their stuff on the same arena that the pro riders do. There will be no fireworks on this evening, but it’s a great opportunity to bring the family out in the community with no charge for admission. For more information, call the Folsom Chamber of Commerce at 916-985-2698 or visit folsomrodeo.com.

GRAND MARSHALS

Two Grand Marshals selected this year By Rachel Zirin OF THE FOLSOM TELEGRAPH

E

ach year, there is someone special who is selected to represent the Folsom Pro Rodeo as the grand marshal. This year, there are two! Long-time rodeo lovers Cotton Rosser and Dorothee Cavitt Mull both have a deep history in the roots of Folsom and were the perfect match for sharing grand marshal duties this year.

COURTESY • FOLSOM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

BILL SULLIVAN • THE FOLSOM TELEGRAPH

COTTON ROSSER, who will be 90 years old this month, has lived in Marysville for almost 70 years and has been involved in putting on rodeos for 64 years. His love for the rodeo began with his love of animals and riding professionally. Rosser has ridden everything from bulls to bucking horses. “I have done every rodeo event, except barrel racing because that’s a ladies event,” he said. “My favorite things at the rodeo are the American flag, the National Anthem, of course, the fireworks and the kids’ mutton busting.” When asked what he is looking forward to, Rosser said every event and that no one gets hurt — livestock or people. Rosser said being selected as one of the grand marshals was a great honor. “It’s a great honor, you know. I have been very involved over the years, and Folsom is probably one the of the most popular rodeos in Northern California,” he said. “It’s a great event in a great town with a lot of a great people.” Rosser has known his co-grand marshal Cavitt Mull for about 50 years and was excited when he learned they would be sharing the role together. “She’s a lovely lady. She has a lot of history, and she comes from a very historic family,” he said.

12

DOROTHEE CAVITT MULL is a fifth-generation Californian from an Irish pioneer family of cattle-ranchers. Her family homesteaded 10,000 acres of land to dairy at Cavitt-Stallman Road as well as set up Holstein Dairy in Truckee. Cavitt Mull’s great-great Aunt Alice Riggins Scott owned and ran a dairy in Squaw Valley and on Prairie City Road and Scott Road, right here in Folsom. Fast forward a few years, Cavitt Mull lived on the Joerger Ranch in Clarksville, which is now in El Dorado Hills. After she lived at the Budakee Ranch at Natoma Creek near Morman Island, which is now under Folsom Lake. At the age of 12, Cavitt Mull lived on her father’s ranch, named J.W.S. Butler Ranch, and rode the family’s MackameeLester ranch next door, both making up 3,000 acres of land at White Rock and Scott roads. “When I grew up in Folsom, it was a small, small town,” Cavitt Mull said. “Now it’s such a big city, and it breaks my heart that White Rock and Scott roads have become a subdivision.” The 91-year-old graduated from Folsom High School in 1943 with 25 other students. She married California attorney Archie Mull Jr. and had two children, Marison Molly Mull and George Mull. Cavitt Mull has been on a horse her entire life and has owned many, many horses. When asked what her favorite rodeo event was, she said bareback riding. “I feel extremely honored to be chosen as a grand marshal,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to just being at the rodeo and seeing all the people who support Folsom. The rodeo has grown so much over the years and it is because Folsom continues to support it.”

RODEO QUEENS

More than a beauty pageant By Rachel Zirin OF THE FOLSOM TELEGRAPH

E

very year in July, we celebrate Independence Day. This day is so special to our country that we celebrate with a rodeo. More specifically, in Folsom, we have the Folsom Pro Rodeo. During the Folsom Pro Rodeo, we have a Rodeo Queen who is chosen by a panel of judges which usually consists of past Rodeo Queens and other prestigious people who are knowledgeable about horsemanship and rodeos, said Megan Murphy, of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce. “There is only one Rodeo Queen crowned each year at the Folsom Pro Rodeo, and she holds the title for one year,” she said. “The Folsom Pro Rodeo Queen Contest is more than just a beauty pageant; the girls also need to know about horsemanship and so much more.”

14

The queen contestants are evaluated and scored on horsemanship, public speaking, interview skills, poise and appearance, Murphy said. They are also judged on personality, knowledge of rodeo and of the Folsom Pro Rodeo. The contest will take place during this year’s Folsom Pro Rodeo. “The Folsom Pro Rodeo is one of our favorite events, and we are proud to present an event that brings the community together,” Murphy said. “This year, we are excited for some new additions to the rodeo.” Crystal Newborn, 2017 Folsom Pro Rodeo Queen, went through the contest last year, and she had some advice for this year’s contestants. “My advice I would give is to just have fun and enjoy the experience,” she said. “You will be meet a lot of people, so enjoy the people you meet along the way!”

The 25-year-old said winning the title last year was the greatest feeling. “It was the greatest feeling ever, honestly. I have been such a fan and grew up going to the Folsom Pro Rodeo. This is my hometown rodeo,” she said. “It was the best day.” Becoming Rodeo Queen opened up many doors for Newborn, she said. “It’s opened up so many opportunities to meet new people and queens throughout the state,” she said. When asked what her favorite experience of being queen was, she almost couldn’t decide. “Oh my gosh, there’s far too many to count! I would have to say my favorite thing I have done so far was going to Grass Valley to the Draft Horse Classics, wearing my Rodeo Queen attire and carrying the American flag on a Percheron draft horse,” she said.

How long have you been riding? I have been riding for about 10 years now. Tell our readers what really goes into becoming a Rodeo Queen. It’s having a lot of compassion towards competitors, the community and being open minded about any situation. It’s about encouraging other young women to be independent and grow. Do you have a favorite event? I really enjoy watching team roping. It’s about two people working hard to achieve a common goal. Team work is something I enjoy, and it’s a really important skill to have. What are your duties as a queen? The Folsom Pro Rodeo competition really encourages you to compete in the California Rodeo. I am interested in competing for that and representing Folsom. I’m looking forward to visiting other rodeos representing the Folsom Pro Rodeo.

How long have you been riding? I have been riding since I was pretty much two days old when my mom took me to my first rodeo. Tell our readers what really goes into becoming a Rodeo Queen. A lot of passion! A lot of love for the community and the sport of rodeo because becoming a Rodeo Queen, you are the face of the rodeo. You are traveling and getting the rodeos name out there. You are talking to the patrons of the rodeo. Anyone who is there, you will have to answer any question about the rodeo event and what it takes to be in the rodeo. Do you have a favorite event? My favorite event would have to be bareback bronc riding. It is such an exhilarating, and exciting event. You never know what is going to come out the shoot! What are your duties as a queen? My duties as Rodeo Queen will be to travel to all rodeos possible in California, help out in the community and do anything possible to keep the sport of rodeo alive.

How long have you been riding? I have been riding since I was 8. I started with ponies and got my first horse when I was 9. Tell our readers what really goes into becoming a Rodeo Queen. Becoming a Rodeo Queen, you have study a lot of rodeo knowledge. It’s really important because people will come up to you and ask all kinds of things at the rodeo. You will need to know everything and be able to answer anything they might want to know, or point them in the right direction. Public speaking is also very important. You always have to look your best and have a smile on your face. Do you have a favorite event? I would have to say my favorite rodeo event is saddle bronc riding. I think it is just crazy how the cowboys ride those very powerful animals. I don’t think I would be able to stay on if I was riding. What are your duties as a queen? If I were to become the 2018 Folsom Pro Rodeo Queen, I will be able to travel to all rodeos in California, and I will represent the Folsom Pro Rodeo. I’ll talk to kids, and encourage young ladies to run for Rodeo Queen to keep the Rodeo Queen contest alive and support the sport of rodeo.

HOBBIES: I enjoy horseback riding, art and dog training. EDUCATION: California State University, Sacramento, studying kinesiology

How long have you been riding? I have been riding seriously since I was 9, so 11 years. Tell our readers what really goes into becoming a Rodeo Queen. A lot more than expected! It’s a lot of training yourself to become a public relations representative. You are not a cowgirl as much as you are an embodiment of a cowgirl. It’s a lot of people relations. Do you have a favorite event? I have to say barrel racing or team roping. I did barrel racing so it is always fun for me to watch. The team roping looks really cool because I always wanted to do it. What are your duties as a queen? I will be an ambassador for Folsom and the Folsom Pro Rodeo. I’ll embody what the cowgirl is and give kids someone to look up to.

Flying Cowboys to impress Rodeo crowds By Bill Sullivan OF THE FOLSOM TELEGRAPH

T

hey are known as the Flying Cowboys and they certainly live up to their name. At the Folsom Pro Rodeo, you can see for yourself the talents of these daredevils as they take to the Dan Russell Arena with their high-flying thrills during the 58th Folsom Pro Rodeo. “People think we are nuts,” says Nick Dunne. Dunne has been a veteran rider for the group and began riding motocross when he was four years old. Dunne has ridden professionally for more than a dozen years now. Among the many feats on his riding resume, has been the Flying Cowboys and performances right here in Folsom’s energetic arena. “We are jumping 35 feet in the air with gaps reaching 75 feet long. We love having people come out to the rodeo and blowing their mind,” he said. For riders like the Flying Cowboys, there is no text book learning process or formal training. According to riders like Dunne, riders each have their very own style and expression. Many of them are self-taught from a very early age. Whether it is daring bull riders or daring high-flying motocross riders that suit your fancy, the 58th Folsom Pro Rodeo offers a healthy dose of each and many eye-opening attractions right along with them. The Flying Cowboys will perform nightly, June 30, July 1 and July 3 at approximately 9 p.m. at Dan Russell Arena after the last cowboy has ridden off and the fireworks are set to begin.

rofessional entertainer Matt Merritt will be making a special stop in Folsom for the Folsom Pro Rodeo this year and he is sure to entertain. Traveling from Olin, North Carolina, this professional rodeo clown has seen it all. Merritt has been in the business for more than 16 years and has traveled to Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, Canada and 48 states in the U.S. Merritt said during the rodeo, there are many animals and people competing and a lot of time, something will go wrong and there will be down time. “My job is to fill those dead spaces and entertain people,” he said. “I tell jokes, do a skit or act, or dancing. It can be many different things. It’s a lot of fun, but it can be challenging. You got to keep it fresh!” Last year, Merritt entertained crowds as the Rodeo Clown, and he is back for another great year. During last year’s interview with the Telegraph, he said he had heard of the Folsom Pro Rodeo and how big it is with huge crowds, and he wanted to come see it for himself. He was surely impressed with Folsom as he is here for another year. To prepare for his profession, he said he goes on Wikipedia a lot to research along with local news.

“I will look up and research anything that will make the audience feel special,” Merritt said. “If you live in Oakland, I will do something with the Warriors. If it’s in Chicago, I’ll do something with the Cubs. I look for things that relate to where I am going. It is unique everywhere I go.” Merritt said he is looking forward to the energy of the crowd and the opportunity to have fun. “My job is unique in that where the crowd can make or break how I feel,” he said. “It’s my job to show them a good time. It will be a good time.” Merritt’s favorite event during the rodeo is bull riding because of the inherent danger of it. “I have been around it so long, so I see the details that go into it,” he said. “There is a lot of technicality in it and to see it done right is awesome. In bull riding, the crowd seems to be really into it also. It is human nature that if you see someone doing something dangerous, you get excited.” Merritt played a role in The Longest Ride in 2015 and is an exclusive entertainer of the PBR Velocity Tour. NEW THIS YEAR

New extreme event

RING OF

FIRE By Rachel Zirin

ew to the Folsom Pro Rodeo this year, the Ring of Fire is sure to keep audiences on the edges of their seats. This new event was brought to the rodeo by Reno Rosser, long-time rodeo participant. The Ring of Fire is considered an extreme event and could last anywhere from 20 seconds to five minutes, Rosser said. “We will have four contestants in the arena, each in a 15-foot in diameter ring set on fire,” he said. “The last contestant in the ring at the end will win the game.” You would think, “Hmm, that sounds easy enough.” But no, not exactly. “The incentive to stay in the ring is a 2,000-pound bull,” he said. “Basically, the bravest guy wins. Depending on the bull, the event could last anywhere between 20 seconds and five minutes.”

Rosser said he brought this event to the Folsom Pro Rodeo because Folsom is not a traditional rodeo. “This is an extreme event. The Folsom Pro Rodeo is not just a traditional rodeo. We want to keep the crowds looking forward to these kinds of events,” he said. “We’re trying to attract younger audiences, and a lot of these extreme events we do, we have done for Jackass with Jonny Knoxville.” Rosser said he is looking forward to this year’s rodeo, and having great weather. “I’m looking forward to seeing the crowd, the fireworks, mutton busting, barrel racing, everything — it’s tradition,” he said. “I have gone to the rodeo every year since I was a kid. My dad, Cotton, has produced the rodeo for more than 35 years. It’s a great event and there is an event for everyone to enjoy.”

ach evening of the Folsom Pro Rodeo, a group of young brave cowboys and cowgirls test their skills by riding sheep. While it sounds easy enough, fact is, it’s not the easiest task to tame. However, it’s a crowd favorite with a full roster each and every night. Mutton busting at the Folsom Pro Rodeo is open to 5- and 6-year-old children. Each night, more than a dozen brave youngsters come into the arena to take a try at becoming a real rodeo star. Regardless of how long they stay on the striding sheep, it’s a crowd favorite and every contestant is cheered on regardless of how they finish. Ask any participant prior to the competition and they will tell you mutton

This year, Folsom’s Goodell family has three brave 5-year-olds competing. Sam Goodell, Ford Goodell and Rosie Goodell which encompass two brothers and a cousin, will be among the many on the roster. “It’s so rewarding to see the excited little ones get out there in front of the crowd,” said Sharon Williams of the Greater Folsom Partnership. Williams has been escorting the little ones out in front of the crowd for decades at the Folsom Pro Rodeo. She has seen the bravest of kids and some of the most stubborn. “There are some that are determined they are going to hang on the longest from the moment they way in,” she said. “And there are some that are ready until they get out there and they dig those heels in and just decide it’s not their thing. I enjoy this every year.”

busting is easy and they will be able to hold on for a long time. In reality, few hold on for more than a few seconds and many fall off almost immediately, but that’s what makes the event one of the more popular at the rodeo as brave little kids trying to show the adults that they’ve got what it takes to be a cowboy and cowgirl. Ask them the trick to doing well, it’s two words: “hold on.” There is a good chance that many of today’s bull riders, barrel racers and even professional rodeo clowns likely got their start in the rodeo as a mutton busting contestant. There is another chance, that they were following in the footsteps of the generations ahead of them as this is an activity that is full of family tradition year after year. It’s also not uncommon for siblings to compete with one another in this sport.

ome watch the next generation of rodeo athletes in the Northern California Junior Rodeo Association from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, July 2. Don’t under estimate the Junior Rodeo. The participates may be between the ages of 6 years old and 18, but they are just as competitive as the adults, said Becky Roenspie, president of the Northern California Junior Rodeo Association. “The Junior Rodeo has all of the events a regular rodeo has, except there are added events for the kids,” she said. “All of our events are to get them ready to move onto the next level of rodeo.” Basically, the youngens start on the smaller animals and work their way up to the larger animals as they get older. For example, there is an event called Chute Dogging, which prepares the kids for steer wrestling, Roenspie said. The Junior Rodeo at the Folsom Pro Rodeo will consist of 16 events, some which including goat tying, steer wrestling, saddlebronc riding, mini bucking horses, barrel racing and even bull riding. “The crowd is going to see these kids are tough competitors, even though it is a junior rodeo,” she said. “They are extremely

competitive and they are there to win!” This is the first year the Northern California Junior Rodeo Association will be participating in the Folsom Pro Rodeo, and Roenspie said the kids are very excited. “These kids are excited to be able to rodeo in the same arena as the pros,” she said. “Something really cool about this is we have some worldchamp cowboys that have gone to the NFR (National Finals Rodeo) and now have their kids riding with us. Some of these cowboys will be riding in the normal portion of the rodeo, and their kids will be in the NorCal part of it.” The winner of the Junior Rodeo will receive a saddle with Folsom Pro Rodeo imprinted on it. “A lot of people think that when you say Junior Rodeo, it’s just going to be a kids’ rodeo, but these kids are fierce. They are huge competitors,” she said. “If you want to see top kids, this is where to see it!” Northern California Junior Rodeo Association is a 501(c) (3) based out of Spreckels and works 100 percent on donations and sponsorships. hen the final fireworks fade in the sky, the action continues at the Folsom Pro Rodeo in the popular Folsom Diesel Work’s Saloon Under the Stars. Complete with live music nightly by the band Branded, a more spacious venue this year will add more “boot scooting” room for dancing and socializing for rodeo fans. During the rodeo, the Saloon Under the Stars is the only full bar offering a selection of mixed drinks featuring products made by Folsom Pro Rodeo sponsors Coors and Jack Daniels. The saloon will be open each night of the rodeo, except on July 2 during the Junior Rodeo.

hen you step through the gates at the Folsom Pro Rodeo and look down at the arena (or up depending on your arrival gate) with your seating assignment in hand, just look for a friendly face in a red T-shirt. Volunteer ushers, led by Kevin Duewel, will be able to get you seated quickly as well as answer any of your pressing questions. This isn’t Duewel’s first rodeo. This is his third year of volunteering at the rodeo and has taken on the responsibility of head usher twice before. He is using his experience to provide new strategies to help ushers be as efficient and friendly as possible. It’s a complicated process to seamlessly seat more than 6,000 rodeo fans each night of the event. But the job has its rewards and, according to Duewel, it’s fun meeting all those people. Part of his plan is to make sure his fellow ushers have whatever information or direction they need to do their jobs. “I’ve developed specific roles for some of my volunteers such as those who have only one job — making sure everyone stays hydrated.” In addition to creating these new strategies, Duewel, 27, is also studying for the Bar Exam

which takes place a few short weeks following rodeo. He is one of several hundred volunteers who spend their July 4th holiday supporting the Greater Folsom Partnership by helping produce the popular Folsom Pro Rodeo. These volunteers do everything from serving beer to providing a seamless gate experience for those arriving to see this regional event. “Its so exciting to be a part of the rodeo,” said Deuwel, who is an active member of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce including the Folsom Young Professionals. “It’s an atmosphere of fun and I really enjoy it,” he said. “The rodeo is an important part of the community and it needs volunteers to make it happen.” He said the rodeo is so important to the community. “It is a visual tribute to our western heritage. And it helps the Folsom Chamber of Commerce support our business community. Plus, it brings visitors from all over the area to Folsom.” “Being at the Folsom Pro Rodeo is what I love about Folsom!” he said.

The rodeo's economic impact

By Kris Keables

OF THE FOLSOM CHAMBER

W

hen the Folsom Pro Rodeo gallops into Folsom each July, it brings with it more than $1.5 million in extra local spending in the community during the summer, according to an economic study. The rodeo and its attendees generate an economic “bull market” in Folsom — not related to the four-legged badtempered variety who perform in the arena over the three-day event. It’s a month-long economic boon for the community as the Folsom Chamber of Commerce helps drive rodeo fans into local eateries and restaurants before, during and after the rodeo through widespread social marketing. This favorite patriotic event attracts families from all over California — especially the Bay Area. These out-of-

32

town visitors spend an extra night or two at Folsom hotels and enjoy other great activities such as water sports or cycling and earmark the community as a destination for future travel. And this year they can also enjoy a variety of fun events which take place around the rodeo from the Historic Folsom Hometown Parade on Saturday, June 30 to the Fire Cracker Fun Run on July 4th. This economic bonus is reflected in several ways from attendees patronizing local restaurants or grabbing dinner from one of the many restaurant vendors offering food at the rodeo. Fans visit Handley’s or other clothing stores to deck themselves in traditional rodeo garb of jeans, hats and boots. And a visit to Folsom isn’t complete without experiencing Historic Folsom or

Palladio — both with their own unique atmosphere and attractions. “Rodeo fans support our economy in many ways while they are enjoying this family-friendly event. They shop and dine while they are here. They take note of the busy event calendar and return for Folsom LIVE, Tap Folsom or one of the other fun events we host,” said Joe Gagliardi, CEO of the Greater Folsom Partnership, presenter of the rodeo. “With the support of Folsom businesses — especially our longtime rodeo presenters Folsom Chevrolet, Coors, Jack Daniels as well as other sponsors such as Intel, Dignity Health, Martell O’Neal Real Estate Team and many others, we are excited to bring the rodeo to the community each year,” he said.
