Blondies Yogurt Shop opened Blondies Yogurt Shop on Friday, 13, 2017. She got into the business because AshedaOct.andEschen two daughters love frozen yogurt and had always talked about getting into a family business that they could all work together on. “Frozen yogurt just seemed to be the perfect fit for us. We eat it everyday!” Eschen said. The readers of the Auburn Journal voted Blondies Yogurt Shop 2018 Colfax Best of the Best new business. “I was completely surprised and it really did bring tears to my eyes,” Eschen said. “It definitely made my day and I so very much appreciate everyones vote. It is an honor.” Blondies Yogurt Shop supports the community by sponsoring fundraisers for local schools and churches. The shop contributes its success to working hard everyday, but mostly from the support of the community. “We listen to what the community wants and then

try to deliver that in an excellent fashion that is fun and affordable. I think we nailed it,” Eschen said. What sets Blondies Yogurt Shop apart is the fact that they are not just a frozen yogurt shop. They also offer homemade soups, hot dogs, tamales and bakery items such as scones and gourmet cookies. “We make our own Blondies Mix Oatmeal and have an oatmeal topping bar which is very unique,” Eschen said. The concept of the shop is toppings, so anything that needs toppings belongs in the shop. “Our perfect customer is the one that comes in for a fresh steamed hot dog, homemade potato salad, and then finishes it with a cookie and a cup of froyo. That is a complete meal under ten dollars,” Eschen said.

Mar-Val Sierra Market hen Casey Rodacker took over Colfax’s Mar-Val’s Sierra Market in 2014, he W became the family’s third generation to run the store. Mar-Val’s was voted 2018 Best of the Best grocery store by Colfax-area readers. Mar Val’s commitment to the community and passion for the grocery business is exemplified in its escripts program, donating up to five percent of customer purchases to local schools and nonprofits. Rodacker cites listening to customers’ needs and wants and then delivering on that as a major factor in the store’s success. “Mar-Val is always looking to better our stores and give our shoppers the best shopping experience possible,” he said. For Rodacker, being family owned and taking pride in customer service is what sets Mar-Val apart from others in the industry. He’ said he’s very thankful and appreciates

uilt in 1929 by local craftsmen using native timber and stone, the Monte Vista Inn was Bdesigned as a “roadhouse” offering food and lodging to those traveling the winding two-lane Donner Summer route of Highway 40. Over the years, the inn underwent many changes: Lodging was phased out and the emphasis focused on food, beverage and fun. The current ownership, involved since 1972, embarked on a long-range restoration and expansion plan. One of the primary goals to preserve the basic structure — the old charm — of the mountain house restaurant. The addition, which incorporated the entire front overhang of the building and double the size of the dining area, was built of the same indigenous logs and rock as the original. The kitchen was also enlarged, remodeled and modernized to handle the increased seating capacity. Underlying these transformations was the goal of evolving from a coffee shop, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, into a gracious restaurant, offering fine country

dining nightly. The pancakes and shakes have been replaced by upscale California cuisine featuring Certified Angus Beef, fresh seafood, pasta and items from the wood smoker. The menu changes frequently and the very popular prime rib is added on the weekends. The kitchen staff utilizes only the finest and freshest ingredients in preparing each evening’s faire, right down to the homemade bread, soups, salad dressings and desserts. “Our family is very honored that customers appreciate all we are doing with the historic restaurant,” owners Abigail and John Wardwell said. “Thank you for voting us Best Fine Dining.
